Tsunami Relief Week at The Regent’s

Tsunami Relief Week at The Regent’s

In light of the tragic events of 26th December 2004 within the South East Asia region, it is very important that The Regent’s community responded with enthusiasm and in the familiar fund-raising spirit that is associated with us being a Round Square School.

Both the secondary and primary Round Square Councils have met and discussed appropriate initiatives, as have all the tutor groups within the secondary school. What has been decided upon is a whole school ‘Relief’ week that is solely focused upon raising money for the devastated regions and communities of the South of Thailand.

The students and staff have chosen the week beginning 7th February 2005 as ‘Relief’ week. The target is to raise at least 240,000 Baht that can be put towards the cost of building two family homes (120,000 Baht each) for the people of the Ko Sri Bo Ya near the Phi Phi Islands. A group of senior students will then attend a Round Square service project on Ko Phi Phi during the February half-term holiday and help construct the two homes. The Bangkok campus is also aiming to raise at least 120,000 Baht.

In order to achieve these targets the students have chosen the following fund-raising initiatives:

1. Mufti (no school uniform) week (7th – 11th February): This will cost 20 Baht for Monday, 40 Baht for Tuesday, 60 Baht for Wednesday, 80 Baht for Thursday, and 100 Baht for Friday.

2. Art Auction (Friday 11th February): After the tremendous response of the art exhibition at the Christmas concert, a number of the art students have kindly agreed to auction their fantastic work.

3. Lunchtime concerts: The IB music students will be holding lunchtime concerts over the next few weeks.

4. 2005 Swimmathon (11th / 12th Febraury): After the success of two years ago, the Senior RS Council is holding another 24-hour swimmathon. This will begin at 16.00hrs on the Friday and finish at 16.00hrs on the Saturday.

5. Young Enterprise: All the Young Enterprise teams will be selling their products during the ‘Relief’ week and donating the profits to the project.

If you have any questions, ideas or would like to support The Regent’s ‘Relief’ week in any way at all, please don’t hesitate in contacting Paul Crouch at crouchp @regents.ac.th

Thank you for your continued support of community service and Round Square student initiatives at The Regents.

Helga and her children visit the hill tribes

Helga Jaermann, Art Teacher of the Porcelain Painting Station at the Bangsai Arts and Crafts Centre - The “Support” Foundation of Her Majestic Queen Sirikit of Thailand together with her students visited the “Ban Tung Sea Tone” Karen hilltribe village where they were heartily welcomed with good food, dance and singing performances. For the first time four young people from this village are studying in Helga’s class on a trial basis, where they have already reached a high artistic level. This has brought much pride and joy to the village chief and all the inhabitants.
