Thai-German Institute says goodbye to BTS maintenance senior manager
Schmidt Tapken, the senior manager of the Siemens Maintenance Unit, Sky
Train Systems in Bangkok and his successor Walter Gintschel visited TGI to
say goodbye to their supporters and partners.
High tea for high
profiles at TGI - (From left) Walter Ginstschel, senior manager for BTS
Maintenance; Weiler, GTZ expert; Walter Kretschmar, TGI German director;
Piti Tanumontho, plant productivity manager; Schmidt Tapken, Puchong
Putthawaong consulting engineer-vibration analysis; Montri Luangchan,
maintenance management; Krissada Lertprasertwech, engineer maintenance
management, and Pradit Jitjuck, vibration analyst.
Walter Kretschmar and the team of maintenance engineers,
who for almost a year serviced the BTS Maintenance Unit on Early Fault
Detection, using Vibration Analysis System, welcomed their visit.
Schmidt Tapken from Siemens served BTS Maintenance in
Thailand since 1995, and now at the retiring age of 60, is ready to go home,
but takes along his impression of the work in Thailand.
He said, "Thailand is one of the best places in the
world to live. This is the only country that my wife never complained about
wanting to go back home. People are friendly and easy to work with. Thai
people have such nice smiles, whether it’s real does not matter. It is a
great way to start your day. Of course my first days were difficult because
of the misunderstanding of culture and language barrier, but I learnt how to
handle that. How? When you want to make them understand you, you have to go
to them and make sure they understand you and follow your work through. I
would not like to change the Thais into Germans, but I always kept the
German standard system. We may not be perfect, but I’m very proud of my
staff. They are the real contribution to the success of the BTS. Our key
success factors are honesty towards the boss, staff and the job."
Piti Tanumonthon added his personal opinion,
"Schmidt Tapken is kind and thorough. He always looks at both sides of
the coin and chooses the middle path to make any decision. He believes that
in life there are multiple solutions to any problem. That is his personal
key success factor."
We all wish him a happy retirement when he finally goes
home to be with the rest of his family!
The Rotary Family -Rotary Club Taksin Pattaya and sister club Chiang Mai West
Let’s do this adventure together
Marion Vogt
Every year towards the end of June, Rotarians all over
the world get real busy as the time comes near when the exchange of
presidency takes place in each of the 31,000 clubs. Imagine 31,000 different
clubs with an approximate worldwide membership of 1,200,000 members who all
have the goal to create awareness, friendship and make a difference in this
world.
It would be a lie to say it’s just roses and honey
during normal club assemblies and weekly meetings, but when it counts, the
spirit of Rotary is there, as it was during the recent installation at the
Amari Rincome Chiang Mai.

President Preecha Wongsakul, his spouse Laddawan and Hans, the secretary of
Rotary Club Taksin Pattaya.
Chiang Mai West Rotary President Manit Mantala, his
spouse Sumittra, District Governor Preecha, Incoming President Preecha
Wongsakul and his Rotary spouse Laddawan took the seat on the head table and
President Manit opened his last meeting reminiscing about this past year,
thanking each and every one for the support, for the motivation and
sometimes even for the encouragement.
He looked around the room, counting 10 different
nationalities, all members with their spouses or friends of this voluntarily
international organization which puts service above self, which encourages
friendship inside the club regardless of race, nationality, faith, sex and
color.
He said, "These are the kind of evenings Rotary is
all about. It was an exceptional year which I will remember all my
life." He then expressed how honored he and the club felt that the new
president of Chiang Mai’s sister club, Taksin Pattaya, and their secretary
came all the way up to show their support and be with them on this
auspicious night.
President Marliese Fritz addressed the Rotarians and the
incoming president, admiring the bilingual way Chiang Mai West uses and felt
moved by the method new members were installed and integrated into the club,
as it showed the idea what Rotary is all about: friendship and service. She
said she will take the inspiration and the greetings back to her own members
and encouraged Chiang Mai West to use the New Rotary Year as a joint venture
between the sister clubs.

Underwater World finds new mascot
Ariyawat Nuamsawat
Rawit Thertwong, a famous Thai singer and actor, showed
off another of his talents at Underwater World when he created their new
mascot.

Thertwong poses next to his creation, Underwater World’s new mascot.
Rawit’s shark mascot was published on Underwater World’s
web page, along with two others, and visitors to the web site were asked to
vote for their favorite. The aquarium has been collecting votes since May,
and the highest number went to the standing shark that Rawit creatively
designed. Two more challengers presented a nemo fish and a seahorse but didn’t
impress the people as much as this smiling shark.
July 4 marks Underwater World’s first anniversary and
this year the complex will feature the grinning shark as its signature
mascot.
Underwater World has been welcoming various types of
visitors, including school kids within Chonburi and from the neighboring
provinces, Thais, and international tourists. The entrance fee for Thais is
160 baht, for foreign visitors it is 360 baht. The aquarium is not far away
from Pattaya City, south on Sukhumvit Highway near Greenway driving range.
Once there, one can learn much about the living and non-living undersea
creatures and be educationally entertained.
This mascot will represent the aquarium in projects
concerning marine conservation meant to raise awareness amongst the school
kids.
Happy birthday Rattana
Pattaya City mayor makes surprise visit
Paul Kruger
Rattana Khiaophet, wife of German citizen Bruno Pingel,
celebrated her birthday on June 21 in great style. The party took place at
the swimming pool of the View Talay Villas, the right environment for such a
great feast.
More than 100 guests, both Thais and foreigners, enjoyed
the excellent buffet from the venue’s kitchen. Musical entertainment was
provided by band “The Fox” which arrived from Bangkok just for this
occasion. Many hot rhythms from its repertoire were enjoyed by the numerous
guests.
Rattana works in the business with her husband, who is
the owner of Siam Best Enterprises and co-owner of View Talay Villas and
View Talay Residences. Married for more than 11 years, they have a daughter
named June.
Among the many prominent guests was famous musician Lam
Morrison from the Blues Factory, who went on stage and thrilled the guests
by playing popular melodies. Police Lieutenant Colonel Somchai Phongsai,
inspector of the traffic police of Pattaya was also among the well wishers.
But the main surprise of the evening took place a little
bit later. Although he has a full workload, Mayor Niran Wattanasartsathorn
took some of his precious time to congratulate the birthday lady.
