Free beer served at new Bavaria Beer Garden during opening night

Peter Nordhues

Bavaria is renowned for its sociable beer gardens with their cozy atmospheres. Now there is something very similar in Pattaya.

Two lawyers, Robert Stancke and Ammat Thiengtham, and their friend, Franz-Josef ‘Hennes’ Schulze-Dickmann, who is an experienced chef with 37 years under the chef’s hat, recently opened a Bavarian beer garden with original Bavarian and international cuisine. The new beer garden is located in front of the Tropicana Hotel.

Expats and tourists flocked to the beer keg, since everybody received a free beer, and besieged the grand buffet, loading lots of pork skins and all the other goodies onto their plates.

Prost! Good friends, good food, good times at the opening of the new Bavaria Beer Garden.

No wonder that one could hardly find a seat in the blue-white decorated garden, enjoying the Bavarian music and the beer in mugs. Sure, that’s what people come to a beer garden for, right? And they have more than enough beer: Veltin’s, Oktoberfest beer, Weihenstephaner wheat beer and plenty more.

Ken, the magician, entertained the guests by walking from table to table showing them his slight of hand.

The Bavarian beer garden will surely be one of the nicest places to visit for all those who like to sit under the typical blue-white sky of Bavaria.

PILC Annual Charity Ball

The Pattaya International Ladies Club presents their annual charity gala ball, A Night on Abbey Road with the Beatles on Saturday, November 22 in the elegant Siam Ballroom of the Royal Cliff. The evening’s entertainment will feature the widely popular ‘Better Band’.

“A Night in Venice” in 2002 was well attended by the community, and raised a large amount of funds for charity in a true gala ball evening.

This major event is in aid of the charities here in and around Pattaya which helps underprivileged children. This will be an elegant, high profile, well-managed event sponsored by respected and prominent companies in the region. A big thank you to Volclay Siam, Copeland-Emerson, and Jomtien Boathouse as Diamond sponsors, Cardinal Health, and Metso Paper as gold sponsors; Laem Chabang International Terminal, SIG Combibloc, and Foster Wheeler as silver sponsors and LCB Container Terminal 1, S & P Syndicate as bronze sponsors.

The event is black tie or leisure suit, and cocktail dress or formal gown for the ladies. It will begin at 7:15 p.m. with cocktails and a silent auction. This is followed by a 4-course gourmet dinner with wine.

Dancing to the Better Band will continue until 2 a.m.

There will also be a very short live auction and a raffle drawing for many lovely prizes.

The Gala Ball will be one of the most popular expat social events of the year. Tickets are 1500 baht per person, all inclusive for dinner with wine and photograph. Tickets may be purchased at all PILC events or by calling Arlette Cykman, special activities chairman at 038 300 325 or mobile 01-825-2668.

Wholly Cow! What a Loy Krathong!

Charter yacht sails Pattaya Bay to view celebrations

Brendan Richards

Pattaya’s celebration of Loy Krathong this year was certainly a sight to behold. The roads and sois were bustling with people as they made their way to numerous activities on the beachfront and at many of the hotels in town to partake in age-old celebration. For myself and select few, we were fortunate enough to view the spectacular lights, sights and sounds of the celebrations from Pattaya Bay, on the Wholly Cow.

Wholly Cow ready to sail off into the sunset.

The Wholly Cow is definitely not a waterlogged bovine bobbing in the bay but a 50-year-old authentic Chinese junk, finished in teakwood, now conducting cruises out of the Ocean Marina. Owner Scott Higginbotham bought the vessel in Hong Kong around 10 years ago and he and his friends primarily used the boat to party on weekends.

Now how do we put these things together?

Scott, previously a shoe designer, explained why he named the boat the Wholly Cow: “Well, we used to go out on weekends in Hong Kong and anyone new coming on board used to say, ‘Holy cow, what a great boat.’ So I figured, why not keep the name.”

More than just a party boat, the vessel also has sentimental value for Scott, as he went on his first date with Vilma on the vessel. He and Vilma married and now have two children.

Packed with Krathongs for this year’s festivities.

Scott finished his contract in Hong Kong and eventually decided to bring the boat to Thailand three years ago. Moving to Thailand was a challenge, “It took two years to refurbish the Wholly Cow and everything is teakwood. We took out the bunks, expanded the bathroom, added a fresh water shower and storage space. ... We can store 280 cases of Heineken in the hold,” says Scott.

Scott and his company, Classic Cruises, only recently began operating out of the Ocean Marina offering lunch and dinner trips, weekend, corporate and private charters for special occasions. The special pre-Loy Krathong Cruise was a perfect launch for one of a number of special cruises to promote the Wholly Cow in the cruise market.

We set off just as the sun sank on the horizon, slowly making our way along the coastline heading north towards Pattaya. The gentle ocean breeze coupled with some classic music and cool refreshments made for a perfect setting as the Jomtien and Pattaya skyline slowly came to life.

Fireworks, lanterns and krathongs lit up the night sky as we cruised north. Everyone enjoyed the refreshments and snacks as the captain guided the Wholly Cow through the waters of Pattaya Bay before setting anchor for around 30 minutes. It was indeed a different view of Loy Krathong and the most enjoyable I have spent in the years I have lived and worked in the kingdom.

As I mentioned before, the Wholly Cow is available for charter trips with a maximum of 12 persons on board to keep it very comfortable. Scott and Judi McNamara, marketing manager, assure that the service is first class and the rate is very reasonable, and they have had great success in running day trips from Bangkok, including transfers.

The boat is equipped with two barbeques, one for fish and one for meat, enabling passengers to cook their catch of the day from a trip to the islands or enjoy what the boat has to offer.

Little Hill - a small mountain for the Chaine des Rotisseurs

by Miss Terry Diner

The local Chaine des Rotisseurs, under the leadership of Bailli Louis Noll (the ebullient), made a small trip to the outskirts of Pattaya to dine at the Little Hill Resort, calling it their “Evening in the Country”. And the countryside it was, with pre-dinner drinks around the pool in the landscaped gardens of the resort.

Hosts Hans and Dicki Frei showed the Chaine des Rotisseurs that there were still some very different national dishes that could be found in Pattaya for lovers of fine food and wines.

Bailli Louis Noll and Charge de Mission Hugh Miller (both center) together with Dicki Frei (far left), Chaine des Rotisseurs members and the staff of Little Hill Resort got together for an indulging feast.

The evening in the countryside began with some imported Norwegian Salmon and then moved on to a Groninger mustard cream soup. This was a traditional Dutch dish with a grain mustard base with bacon, cream and a dash of stock to make a thick and hearty repast.

Accompanying the first two courses was the specially selected white wine, an Orvieto Campogrande Antinori 1997 vintage, described by the Charge de Mission Hugh Millar as, “A refreshing white wine produced from Procanico, Grechetto and Verdelho grapes grown in the hilltop village of Orvieto in the Umbria region.” As can be seen, the wine was well travelled too.

Chaine des Rotisseurs members (L to R) Rene Pisters, Pascal Schnyder, Hans Frei, Dieter H. Pr้court and Peter Thorand.

Switzerland was the next country to display its culinary wares, with a traditional raclette and salad buffet. Hans Frei had manufactured the special equipment to scrape the surface layers from the melting raclette cheese, just as it is done in the cold Swiss mountains.

It was also time to change wines, though some of the white wine lovers stayed with the Orvieto Campogrande Antinori. The new red was a Robertson Ruby Red Cabernet 2002 vintage from South Africa. Again, the description from Hugh Millar, “Ruby Cabernet is a single variety developed in California from a cross of Cabernet Sauvignon with Carignan. Deep ruby red in colour, medium bodied and rich in flavour with very soft tannins which make the wine approachable within just a couple of months after vintage.”

The signature dish for all Chaine des Rotisseur dinners is a roast itself, and Little Hill Resort prepared oven-roasted imported New Zealand lamb cutlets on a cognac infused red wine and rosemary reduction.

Towards the end of the meal it is also customary to have cheeses and again Hans Frei’s love of cheeses and his mechanical inventive nature were on display, with his hand-made cheese cutters that transformed the ‘Tete de Moine’ (monk’s head) cheese into amazing rosette curls and the Sbrinzer cheese into paper-thin slices.

Bailli Louis Noll presented Trirat, the head chef at the Little Hill Resort, with certificates of appreciation from the Chaine des Rotisseurs, and others to Sanan, in charge of the service personnel.

Finally, it was noted with appreciation that Hans and Dicki Frei had provided the Chaine members with some different dishes and another style of culinary experiences.

The next Chaine des Rotisseurs dinner will be held at the Royal Cliff Grand on December 7 and nine new members of the Chaine will be inducted on this evening. More details on the Chaine or the Royal Cliff Beach Resort evening can be obtained from Bailli Louis Noll at the Mata Hari Restaurant, or from Charge de Mission Hugh Millar at the Ambiance Hotel or from the Charge de Presse, Peter Malhotra at the Pattaya Mail.

Pattaya Gay Festival - The Final Countdown

It’s that time of year again when the Pattaya Gay Festival committee looks forward to the final four days of this year’s festival. With the dates set annually at November 29 to December 2 to coincide with World AIDS day on the December 1, the number of visitors coming to Pattaya for the festival seems to be increasing. Everyone hopes it will be the same this year despite all the previous SARS and terrorism scares.

The festival this year will begin with a slightly different party on the beach on Saturday November 29, or if not in the Jomtien Complex as a street party near Dick’s Caf้. This year the group of Jomtien sponsors have got together to arrange this and the committee are grateful to Star Treff, Exitt, Two Faces, Dick’s Caf้ and Poseidon for this event.

On Sunday the 30th there will be the usual final gourmet dinner at Bruno’s - this year at Fredi’s new establishment on Thappraya Road.

Monday December 1 is World AIDS day and there will be the annual parade on Beach Road with the Pattaya City Council with floats from all the major gay establishments and as many of the smaller ones who can enter a float. Always a fun time but marking a very serious commitment to helping all who are HIV or AIDS patients. Last year they experienced heavy rains but it did not dampen the spirits of all the participants.

On the final day, Tuesday December 2, the final street party will be held, as always, where the whole idea of the Pattaya Gay Festival was conceived in Boyztown, Pattayaland Soi 3. With the co-operation of the various establishments the street is turned into a wonderful venue with staging and lighting to facilitate shows and entertainment and the festival’s final raffle. Get your tickets for the last chance at the gold and jewelry and to swell the funds to challenge last year’s total.

This year’s beneficiary is HEARTT 2000 who’s ever increasing need has to be met month by month in order to help supply the necessary life-saving drugs to the many new patients that have been accepted. With over 800 patients under review Dr. Philippe’s resources are stretched to the utmost and the PGF have committed a regular monthly sum to help meet these needs. With everyone’s help this could be further increased.
