Jesters Pub Night: The Final Countdown

By Lewis Underwood

We know that we have been ‘pestering’ you over most of the year, whether it be for corporate sponsorships, pledges, grand raffle prizes, auction items, beer donations, advertising, etc., but again, in our fifth year of the Jesters ‘Care for Kids’ Charity Drive, we have just been trying to raise money for the poor unfortunate kids of our community. And you have done a terrific job!

You have allowed us to build a school at Huay Pong this year, ‘buy’ more scholarships than ever before for the kids who attended the Fountain of Life Center, and generally brightened the future for all the children of our four main beneficiaries.

So, please bear with us for one more night when we ask you to come out once again to help us raise even more money for the kids by buying Grand Raffle tickets and bidding on auction items, and have a good time while doing so. As the sagacious Yogi Berra once said, “It ain’t over, till it’s over.” And we aren’t quite done yet.

The Children’s Fair is the big event on Sunday September 14 when the kids have their fun and everyone can enjoy a ‘family day’, and next it’s OUR time to party! So leave the kids at home with the sitter and come on down to Shenanigans for an evening of music, gaiety, auctions and grand raffle prize drawings! The Jesters Pub Night on Saturday, September 20, is the time for us, the big kids, to have some quality fun and earn money for children’s charities at the same time.

We kick off the evening at 6 p.m. with our professional DJ’s Paul Jackson and Andy Francis spinning the discs. Leagues of volunteers will start working the room selling books of Grand Raffle tickets. Then at 7 p.m., the DJ’s, joined by Neil Smith will start the commentary for the evening. They will get the ball rolling with some adlibbing and asking people for various odd items that they might have on their person or about something unusual they might be wearing, or even the ability to do something humorous or some silly stunt, etc. The first to comply with their request will be awarded one of the numerous attractive spot prizes.

This amusing activity created by our trio of comperes gets the pub night goers into the mood and sets the stage for our auctioneer extraordinaire, Eddie Henheffer, who has shunned work commitments to be here for this night. And what a list of auction items he has to work with! The list contains 25 extraordinary items: headed by two footballs signed by David Beckham, specifically for the Jesters ‘Care for Kids’, courtesy of BP Castrol and procured during his recent visit to Thailand.

In addition, we have a Man U shirt signed by David Beckham, and a host of other precious objects such as Canadian Jack-a-Lope Open pin pennants (5) signed by Nick Faldo, Ian Woosam, Justin Rose, Padraig Harrington, and Retief Goosen. We have Stephen Leather’s autographed, unpublished manuscript of ‘Private Dancer’, and a framed oil painting reproduction of Ernest Blumenschein’s 1913 ‘The Peacemaker from Art-Beat Gallery. The list is fabulous with a great mix of both artistic pieces and sporting memorabilia.

While this is going on, our team will continue to sell Grand Raffle tickets for the drawing that is slated for 11:30 p.m. (please remember that you do not need be present to win.) And, again, what a fantastic list of prizes we have with a top billing of 5 airline ticket prizes to Hong Kong, Sidney, Singapore, Phuket and Samui! Additionally, we have hotel stays, top restaurant dinner vouchers, gym memberships, scuba diving courses, jewelry and many more great prizes offered by the generous business owners of Pattaya.

After the Grand Raffle Prize drawing, the live music program ensues with headliner Pop’s Pattaya All-Stars. We will party on into the wee hours of the morning and expect a good time to be had by all.

After all, throughout all the fun, we are still ‘Caring for Kids’ and doing the right thing for the disadvantaged kids in our community.

Shenanigans, Saturday September 20 from 6 p.m. till late - the Jesters Pub Night and fun night. Be there, you will be warmly welcomed.

Naklua residents and schoolchildren join in neighborhood cleanup

Students learn about turning garbage into compost

Suchada Tupchai

Residents on Soi Post Office in Naklua, along with students from the nearby Pattaya School Number 3, set out on Tuesday morning to give their neighborhood a good cleaning. The cleanup was organized by community leaders with residents and over 50 children participating in the activity.

Community leaders organized the cleanup. Residents and over 50 children participated in the activity.

Following the cleanup, the children were educated on creating compost and fertilizer from organic waste, such vegetables, fruits and discarded peelings, to use around newly planted trees and hedges within the school grounds.

Mmmmm... nothing like a good meal after a hard day’s work picking up and learning about garbage.

This environmentally aware community makes a regular effort to keep their corner of the city clean, right up to the new Naklua market. They are also the main contributors to the ‘Trash for Cash’ project, whereby residents sell off their recyclable waste on a weekly basis, furthering economic independence for the poorer members of the community.

These residents have been very conscientious about keeping the project going. Two years ago the Soi Post office community won the Community of the Year award.

Local businessmen treat Pattaya Orphanage children to a Teddy Bears Picnic

Damri Muangkaew

Two nightclub owners from Soi Pattayaland 3 gathered cash, food and over 500 teddy bears to present to the children of the Pattaya Orphanage. The pair said they had wanted to give something back to the community for quite some time but due to business constraints were unable to make their contributions earlier.

It was a Teddy Bear Picnic when two nightclub owners from Soi Pattayaland 3 and their boys donated food, funds and, of course, Teddy Bears to the Pattaya Orphanage.

They gathered together funds from customers and friends to make the donation, which included 5 large bags of rice, 8 smaller bags, dried food goods, 500 teddy bears and 10,000 baht in cash for the orphanage foundation. The items came from abroad as well as Thailand and are worth over 100,000 baht.

The little youngsters were obviously thrilled to receive such great gifts.

Sister Supattra Nontsuwan, director of the orphanage said, “I am very happy to see that people have not forgotten us and are concerned for the welfare of the children whether they be foreign organizations or Thai based organizations. We are thankful for their encouragement and support of the children. The funds donated here today will be put towards educational scholarships and additional food for the children.”

The little one in the middle gives her new teddy and big hug.

The group proudly handed over the teddy bears to the children as well as some sweets. The sound of joyful laughter was heard throughout the day from children and their benefactors.
