Trayling partnership on form at Century
By Mike Franklin
A last minute cancellation of a trip to Lampang enabled
the ever-present partnership of Ed and Mam Trayling to compete in
Shenanigans Combined Stableford outing to Century Ban Chang on Tuesday
February 4. A combined score of 75 Stableford points resulting from Mam’s
39 points and Ed’s 36 on this testing links course was enough to take the
winner’s spot.
Winners
Ed & Mam Trayling
The course was dry, the wind was up, the weather was hot
and the large field of 62 players managed to get off to an early start using
1st and 10th tees as the course, early on, was not busy.
Noonit Tawapee, continuing in form, contributed 38 points
to a combined score of 73 points with partner Per Ellefsen to take the
runners-up spot. Peter Ring and Danny Dyke with 71 points took third place
on count-back with a back-nine 35 points, beating Phil Taylor and Alan
Bishop’s back-nine 34 points.
Izzy
Freedman & Peter Ring
Emil Itin was nearest the pin on the difficult par 3, 5th
hole; Terry Curtis claimed the 7th and Mark Gorda was closest on the other
two par 3s, the 13th and 15th. Long putt prizes went to Danny Dyke and
Seamus Brennan on the 9th and 18th respectively.
Two other prizes were awarded thanks to a nice gesture by
Peter Ring who donated two lovely handcrafted Tudorware dishes from Ireland.
These were awarded to the highest and lowest individual Stableford scores of
the day. Namely Mam Trayling and, at the other end of the scale, Izzy
Freedman who may have handed the trophy over to his partner Gerry Carpenter
as consolation.
Back in the bar it was shenanigans as usual, noisy and a
lot of fun goings-on. No doubt surprising to some of the newcomers, who this
week included Tom Gingerich, Bill Kirkpatrick, Dr. Raimond Cerny, Maureen
Holmes, Seamus Brennan from Ireland, Graham and Joan Haslam (guests of
Michael Howard), Terry Curtis, Steve Dugdale, Danny Dyke and Peter Ring.
One final prize was awarded to nearly debonair Ed
Trayling and his attempt to grow a moustache. The result so far is
encouraging, a step on from the earlier ‘little Adolph’, but still short
of the Clark Gable look. We watch and wait - maybe a Jimmy Edwards in due
course!
Finally, a mixed reaction to Century so see the notice
board for the venue for the next outing on Tuesday February 18th. The format
for that has changed to a pairs scramble.
Lastly, a forward date for the diary. Tuesday 1st April
will be a Shenanigans special ‘Franklin’s Folly’ to mark April
Fool’s day and the director of golf’s birthday. It will be ‘Santa
Scramble’ style with lots of prizes and some unusual aspects to the
format. Thanks to Herbie Ishinaga, the date is free due to the PSC
Championship being moved back a day, and much appreciated.
Sign-up for the 18th February, in Pairs please, at Shenanigans.

On the past Saturday and Sunday, Starboard and Surf Club
joined together to organize another windsurfing competition for local
windsurfers. The competition was held on Wong-a-mat Beach, where the wind is
very strong during the winter season, which was a nice change of scene for
the Jomtien surfers. The area is also going to be the new testing site for
the Starboard offices which are now based in Bang Na. Starboard is one of
the world’s leading manufacturers of windsurfing boards and has now
decided to move onto location in Wong-a-mat, Pattaya to design and test its
newest boards.
However, on Saturday and Sunday, the competitors were
more interested in the wind than in the construction of the building going
on in the background. The wind was blowing strong and competitors, as well
as board testers, went out with small sails and freestyle boards. Any sail
bigger than 8.0 square meters was in the wrong place, which forced some
enthusiastic windsurfers to have to stay on the beach since they didn’t
have the fitting equipment. However, the races went on, and even though
there was a short break as a buoy got loose and decided to swim away
everybody surfed their hearts out. By 5 o’clock the wind had started
receding, but the surfers were happy and looking forward to another day on
the water on Sunday.
But once again Mother Nature was not on the side of the
windsurfers and everybody spent a day on the beach, sunbathing and sleeping
while waiting for wind. Some board testers went out, but even with 11 square
meter sails, they said it was still pretty low. At 3 o’clock many people
decided to pack up their equipment, and some even left back to Bangkok, when
the wind picked up again and two more races were held. Those who had no
equipment had to share with others and those who had left were just unlucky.
But the wind didn’t hold, so after 2 races everybody was back on the beach
cleaning up.
Even though the wind was not optimal, and there was a
lack of equipment, the races were fun, the music was loud and the food was
good. Everybody had tons of fun and were very happy with the prizes, which
included a board, sail and board bag, all sponsored by Starboard. Thanks
very much for all the enthusiastic contestants and see you all next time!
Winners were as follows:
Professional Class (A):
1. Suhaimee (Ni)
2. Kamthon (Alek)
3. Michael
Amatuer Class (B)
1. Waron (Wimon)
2. Chareen
3. Pornchai

Irish Eyes Are Smiling
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at the Bunker
The distant course at Noble Place played host to the
Bunker Boys for the second time in a fortnight on Tuesday, 4th February,
when they chose it as the venue for their weekly stroke play event. On a day
when many of the regulars were absent, a thirty-plus field was shoe-horned
into the available transport and all except one made it to the course on
time. The day was pleasantly warm and a breeze kept the conditions good for
golf.
Remy Guy held his good recent form together in division
one to head the lists with a commendable net 71, just keeping PJ Redmond,
John King and the returning Per Aschan at bay on net 72.
Scores in division two were better with Neil Griffin
shooting a two-under par 70 to come only third. On 69 was the long hitting
German with the Scandic Bar experience, Gerhardt Schulze, whilst setting the
pace was the Irishman Pat Murphy whose net 67 was matched only by the
twinkle in his Irish eyes at the presentation. Prepare for a cut Pat!
Bill Hewitt shot the day’s only birdie two to win the
Bunker Super Sawng award and Jim Payne celebrated his new handicap in style
by winning the Bunker Banana Booby for his miserable net 86. For more news

Doubles for Griffin and Guy
For the second time in eight days the Bunker Boys chose
Plutaluang as the venue for their weekly Stableford competition on Friday,
7th February. The splendour of an immaculately presented course was to be
matched by some excellent golf and for two players it was to be their second
taste of success in the week.
In division two Neil Griffin could well have shaken off
his “rabbit” status for good with his fine round of 40 points and this
was accomplished under pressure from Mikael Andersson who has just returned
from Sweden, having seemingly gone home for lunch! His 39 point haul was
good enough to keep the also-rans, John Preddy and Len Jones, at bay, with
their level par 36’s. These two Sunshine Boys had the honour of playing in
the day’s star group for the other two players, Wilf Latham and Remy Guy,
also took honourable places on the podium.
Belgium’s popular Bert “Remy” Guy showed us why
Belgium is famous for its chips as he played so many fine short shots to
within a foot of the hole. His swing has developed a smooth-as-Thai-silk
rhythm over the last year and this has seen his handicap plummet six shots
within that time. His 37 points proved too much for Ashley Archibald, 36,
and sparring partner Wilf Latham on 35. The latter two players also shared
the Bunker Super Sawng award for their accuracy in recording birdie two’s.
It was not a good day for Canada’s Frank Baker,
however, as a tormented round ended with him getting lost somewhere in the
vicinity of Plutaluang with nothing more than the prospect of the Bunker
Banana Booby to console him! But the day belonged to Griffin and Guy and
well they deserve the honour.
A boatload of dinner
On the 19th of January, Pattaya Sports Club Fishing
chairman, Frank Collins, set out on a 3-day fishing trip with Andre Verdoodt
and his team from the Wonderful Bar in Soi Yamoto. The trip started out from
Samisan and after about 9 hours of traveling, fishing finally began in South
Thailand at three different locations.
All
smiles back at Wonderful.
A boat
load for sure.
The result was one of the best catches ever. King
mackerel, cobia, grouper, trevalle, and red snapper were all caught. Dozens
upon dozens of fish between 2 - 10 kilograms made this 3 day trip a
memorable one. The pictures speak for themselves.
If you would like to go on a fishing trip, please contact Frank Collins
at 01-9875116 or the 60’s Bar (038) 361-115.

IPGC TAGGS Golf from The Haven
Monday 3rd February
Treasure Hill
Bogey
1st: Bob Lindborg, 2 down
2nd: Paul Taylor, 3 down
3rd: Barry Winton, 4 down
4th: Dave Lee, 5 down cb9 all square
5th: Vance Millar, 5 down cb9 1 down
The week started with the long drive, but well worth it,
to the picturesque Treasure Hill designed by Yoshikazu Kato, who also
designed the famous Blue Canyon in Phuket. Never an easy course to manage,
it was made even more difficult with the tees back mostly to the usual black
positions, and half a gale blowing, which made the par three second hole 235
yards into wind with water right left and back enclosing a very small green.
This set the scene for a rugged round.
Bob Lindborg handled the conditions the best on the day
and took the honours from Paul Taylor, with the usually reliable “Noddy”
Winton surprisingly relegated to third.
Dave Lee continued with his rehabilitation to take fourth
from the “Playboy” Vance Millar, savouring his independence while the
chance lasts.
The twos were shared between Vance Millar and Major Roy
Thornton.
In view of the military build up throughout the world, it
was unsurprising that the armed forces also dominated the week’s new
arrivals and returnees. Back at The Haven Richard Livingston, the resident
PGA Professional, welcomed new members Major Roy Thornton and Private First
Class Igor Saktor, and also welcomed back Regimental Sergeant Major Andy
Pedlar and Staff Sergeant John Hayes, all of whom displayed that too much of
their time had recently been spent on the firing range and not on the
driving range.

Century Chonburi
Stableford
1st Division
1st: Arthur Hancock, 35 points
2nd: Graham Johnson, 34 cb9 19
3rd: Per Aschan, 34 cb9 18
2nd Division
1st: Reg Warner, 38
2nd: Malcolm Clare, 34
3rd: Wendy Hollingsworth, 29 cb9 16
4th: Glynn Nicholas, 29 cb9 12
A second run up the 331 proved to be just as difficult as
the previous outing, with the wind still blowing and little run to be found
on the otherwise excellent Century layout, which featured lush fairways and
very even greens, although the bunkers were still a nightmare.
The usual suspects were to be found leading the divisions
with Arthur Hancock taking the first and Reg Warner excelling in taking the
second with and outstanding score on the day of two under, from Graham
Johnson and Malcolm Clare respectively.
Following a long period in the doldrums, when he could
hardly hit a par three green in two, “The Doc” cleaned up in the twos
managing the only one of the day.
Prior to the prize giving Richard welcomed new members
Mason Levine and William Nolan whilst welcoming back “Lawyer Bill”
Kirkpatrick, Mike Frizzell, Serge Straeten, Per Aschan and Barry Traynor. It
was also a sad farewell to Bob and Pat Duxbury who had to return to the
sunny shores of Blighty.

Ladies Division
1st: Srinuan Feaungoi, 70
2nd: Wendy Hollingsworth, 73
2nd Division
1st: Glynn Nicholas, 73
2nd: J.J. Wright, 74
3rd: Anders Farstadt, 77
4th: Peter Emslie, 78 cb9 40, cb6 27
5th: Paul Ovens, 78 cb9 40, cb6 29
1st Division
1st: Mike Dabanovich, 66
2nd: Doug Campbell, 73 cb9 37, cb6 23.7
3rd: Brian Wilkinson, 73 cb9 37, cb6 25.3
4th: Per Aschan, 74 cb9 37
5th: Bob Van Mol, 74 cb9 38
At last, following weeks of uncharacteristically poor
form “Dabber” finally overcame the worries and pressures of the build up
to and consummation of his wedding to the beautiful Pui, by recording his
lifetime best score and easily sweeping all before him in the first
division. At the after match celebrations he attributed it “to having
spent the whole of the previous day in bed” but refused to enlarge on the
subject, when pressed for further details.
Glynn Nicholas took the second division, as he usually
does just prior to returning to England, from J.J. Wright who closely
followed him.
Playing from the back tees usually means that there are
few opportunities for a two, but the day proved to be an exception, with
four being sunk by Stefan Hoge, “Lawyer Bill”, Brian Wilkinson (a
downhill one of course), and Doug Hollingsworth.
Back at The Haven, Richard welcomed new member David
Evans and welcomed back Brian Wilkinson, Tor Elgvin, Anders Farstadt and
Anders Karlsson.

IPGC Golf From Lewiinski’s - Orchid
Sunday - 2nd of February
Green Valley - White Tees
Stroke
1st A Flight - Rick Sharp - net 71
2nd A Flight - An Kaesavane - net 71
3rd A Flight - Barry Tregurtha - net 71
4th A Flight - Chris Davisson - net 72
1st B Flight - Steve Donovan - net 66
2nd B Flight - Colin Davis - net 69
3rd B Flight - Bob Lindborg - net 73
4th B Flight - Eddy Beilby - net 74
Who was it that said “Timing is Everything”? Well it
is no small wonder that this scribe does not know who said it because he
clearly was not listening. It takes a clever fellow to blow the wheels off
his handicap with a net 66, in time to take a healthy cut the week before
the Monthly Medal. Of course, there was no sign it was coming. His good play
can be controlled no better than his bad play. The fact that he hadn’t won
in a long time was reinforced by the fact that most people, except the
second place Donkey, were actually happy for him. He, in turn, was kind
enough to not abuse that gift of joy by effectively throwing his game in the
dumper for the balance of the week. (Note: His name does not appear anywhere
else in this article.) But enough about me.
Bob Lindborg and Eddy Beilby were both examples that if
you hang in there in medal play you can place, as they filled out the B
Flight rostrum.
Rick Sharp won out on count back for the A Flight top
rung edging always upward trending An Kaesavane and the steady Barry
Tregurtha. Chris Davisson just missed out on the party and slipped to fourth
with his net 72.

Natural Park Hill - White Tees
Stableford
1st A Flight - Graham Johnson - 36 points
2nd A Flight - Bob Duxbury - 32 points
3rd A Flight - Bob Van Mol - 31 points
1st B Flight - Les Utting - 36 points
2nd B Flight - Tom Breslin - 35 points
3rd B Flight - Wendy Hollingsworth - 31 points
Like the patriarch of the family that he is, Les Utting
brought home the bacon from Natural Park Hill. With three generations of
Utting’s holidaying in Pattaya, Les knew a little extra cash would come in
handy. He didn’t disappoint his brood but he did disappoint Tom Breslin as
Les’s handicap-level 36 edged Tom’s fine 35 for first place in A Flight,
on what many feel is the toughest layout on the Eastern Seaboard.
Wendy Hollingsworth was definitely a rose amongst two
thorns as she added some style and charm to the podium with her third in B
Flight finish.
Graham Johnson used his length (driving) and accuracy to
lead A Flight by a whopping four strokes as he lived up to, as he has many
times, his demanding 7 handicap. Bob Duxbury, playing in the last of this
vacation’s rounds, garnered second with a quiet 32 points. Bob Van Mol
showed that the good golfers must be reckoned with when the competition is
on a tough course as he rounded out A Flight with a humble 31 points, but
off a very respectable 82 gross.
Wednesday - 5th of February
Noble Place - C & B - White Tees
Stableford
1st A Flight -The Donkey - 39 points
2nd A Flight - Jay Nakagawa - 36 points
1st B Flight - Heinz Roembell - 38 points
2nd B Flight - Tarja Kankainen - 37 points
Our poster boy this week, Heinz Roembell showed that
given the chance to play regularly his game has potential as he recorded his
first Lewiinski’s-Orchid victory. Heinz had never visited the pay window
to date, but there is every reason to believe he will be seen there more
often. Tarja who routinely cashes on Fridays, showed that she wouldn’t
turn down easy money on any day of the week when she followed Heinz to the B
Flight podium.
With a majority of the A Flight players on tour to Soi
Dao, The Donkey, alias the Jackal, sniffed around and saw the opportunity
for fresh road kill in the top rung. Jay Nakagawa just warming up from the
snows of Sapporo, hit the ground running and served notice that he has a yen
for winning (pun intended) by taking the other A flight medal.

Khao Kheow - A & B - Yellow Tees
Stroke
1st A Flight - Darren Smith - 32 points
2nd A Flight - Scott Williams - 32 points
3rd A Flight - Peter Ring - 32 points
4th A Flight - Eddie Miller - 30 points
1st B Flight - Frank Sinclair - 35 points
2nd B Flight - Jim Munns - 34 points
3rd B Flight - The Donkey - 31 points
4th B Flight - Heinz Roembell - 30 points
Having been on the injured reserve list for approximately
six weeks Darren Smith used his first outing to lead the A Flight charge on
an often blustery day at beautiful Khao Kheow. His count back victory left
second to old friend Scotty Williams who only just nudged one of the nicest
people you will ever meet, Peter Ring, with the bronze. Eddie Miller rounded
out A Flight while keeping his foursome and van mates amused. To reiterate
the words of W. C. Fields “the reports of my demise have been greatly
exaggerated and such was the concern of our readers that “Papa” Sinclair
was no longer a factor. Ha! “Put those 35 points in your pipe and smoke
it” said this octogenarian septuagenarian, oh whatever, really old guy
said. Frank’s best on the day was enough to edge the “other Big Easy”,
Jimmy Munns, by a single Stableford point. Oh yeah, then The Donkey and
blah, blah, blah about him. And then that sandbagger Heinz. I know, I know,
he had only won once but now he has placed twice. An investigation is being
launched into his handicap.
4th, 5th and 6th of February
Soi Dao Tour
Winner - An Kaesavane
2nd Place - Barry Tregurtha
3rd Place - Joe Mooneyham
While the rest of us were toiling in Pattaya, a small
group sought refuge in the mountain retreat of Soi Dao. The gig, which was
by the invitation of Barry TB (who was to capture the silver), was billed as
“Can you guys play golf better than a girl”. The answer at the
conclusion of the three-day test was an emphatic “NO”. An Kaesavane
waltzed through the first two days with gold medals and then relaxed to take
the overall title. Joe “I’m in the” Mooneyham, in taking the bronze,
was the only other male who was not embarrassed that he participated. Daily
prizes: Day One: 1st An Kaesavane; 2nd Barry TB; 3rd Joe “I’m in the’
Mooneyham. Day Two: 1st An Kaesavane; 2nd Paul “betch you can’t spell
it” Coutoumas; 3rd Barry TB. Day Three: 1st Joe “I’m in the’
Mooneyham; 2nd Johnny McHugh; 3rd Robert “don’t call me Bobby” Cross.
Carl Bauman wins bragging rights
PSC Three Sisters Golf
27th January - I thought everyone was watching the Super
Bowl but evidently golfers met at Siam to do their ritual Monday Golf.
Leading the way was Big “Mo” with 42 points. I believe that Moberg would
have won the day even with a full field. Driving well and putting the lights
out, he left the rest of the field in his wake.
Carl
Bauman stole the bragging rights at SCC Feb 3. Jerry Holt just back from
Israel was left holding the bag.
Holding the bag for the end of the month was Charlie
Creed. He was at the top not too long ago, but is surprising how fast you
can slide in this game. Here one day and gone tomorrow.
The third of February brought another winner. This time
with a full field, Carl Baumann managed to ease his way to the front. He is
finally getting his game together after years of layoff. Carl is finally
retired and playing more often and it shows in his game. Coming in with 38
points, he beat a host of other golfers who shot 36’s and 37’s but could
not manage the extra strokes needed for the win.
Holding the bag this week was an old timer with the Three Sisters group.
Gerald Holt who played with the group a long time ago was finally back in
town and rejoined our Monday Golf and managed to grab hold of the bag with a
vengeance. No one was close as he took a firm hold of the bag with 11
points. I’m sure that Gerald, just back from work, will not be there next
week holding the bag.
P.S.C. Golf from the Cafe Kronborg
Monday February 3
Pattaya Country Club
(Stroke)
Whilst not the most striking of courses, Pattaya Country
Club is always a good test of golf, particularly on a day such as this when
the winds are blowing. The one aspect of Pattaya that I find most appealing
is the quality of its fairways, you always get a good lie on lush grass, a
point other more scenic courses could copy. The greens are always fast and
true also, and this coupled with a smiling welcome usually overcomes the
scenic reality.

Thus it was that a full field departed the Kronborg to
play at this windswept course, and the difficulty of the day was shown by
the fact that only two of the competitors actually beat their handicap.
In the A flight, 0 to 19, the winner with a good net 69
was Canadian Jack Cunningham, continuing his fine form of last Thursday.
Second on net 72 was Ebrahim beating Koji Yamada into third on count back.
In fourth place was Brian Blackford with a net 73.
In the B flight, 20 Upwards, the winner with the best
score of the day was Harald Gruber, with a fine net 65. The results of the
next three places were all decided on count back, all on net 72, with Pete
Galle coming second, Cees Bosman third and Hwang Yang Hwan third.
Near pins: #5 Kris Helgason, #7 Finn Lindgren, #12 Jerry
Kurtz and #16 Prostur Jonsson.
Long putts: #9 Morten Moorers and #18 Jack Cunningham.
Thursday February 6
Natural Park Resort
(Stableford)
There are a lot of superb courses in the Eastern Seaboard
area, but for my money this is the best and whilst everyone does not agree
with me, there isn’t anyone I know who doesn’t put it in their top few.
It has the lot: scenic views, lush fairways, and fast tricky greens, without
the punishing trees of its equally fine, but evil brother, Natural Park
Hills.
With a trio of nine holes, A, B and C, we played the A
and C courses, and enjoyed every minute. Thus it was that a smiling full
crew teed off to play this 18 holes, with the hopes of a fine round on a
fine course.
Ricky
Ferguson, a regular player with the Kronborg, whose shirt nearly matches the
background.
Ricky’s
caddy and a view.
Sat in the spacious and elegant clubhouse after the
round, it was a pleasure to see the satisfied faces of the golfers even if
they didn’t play very well. As usual at this time of the year the winds
tended to blow the balls about and reduce the scores to reality.
The winner of the A flight, 0 to 19, with 36 points was
Phil Utting beating Derek Brook on count back into second place. Third with
35 points was Jack Cunningham and fourth with 34 points was Ted Morris
beating Tim Holt on count back.
The winner of the B flight, 20 upwards, was Pete Galle
with a fine 40 points ahead of Dave Richardson with 39 points in second.
Third with 37 points was Hwang Yong Hwan beating Mick O’Connor on count
back.
Near pins: #A5 Phil Utting, #A8 Kevin Dinan, #C4 Tim Holt
and #C7 Hirosi Segawa.
Long putts: #A9 Pete Galle and C9 Chris Helgasson.
P.S.C. Golf from Bobby Joes 60’s Bar

Treasure Hills
(Stableford)
Meeting up with the ‘gang’ for brekkers is always an
experience, ranging from ‘oh no’ to ‘oh boy’ and it is quite easy to
see who the late night revellers the night before have been. Still when its
free it’s amazing how even the most hung over can get a cup of tea and a
few bites down.
Nose

Giggly
presents to Cees (alias The Frog Prince)
On to Treasure Hills and sad to say a super golf course
looks like its been ravaged by an army of moles, but I am informed it’s an
army of ants. Still it takes more than a few billion ants to dampen the
spirits of the 60’s golfers, and the fast tricky greens, sensible
clubhouse, and good layout with good fees, made for a very enjoyable day,
with all joining in the banter in the clubhouse at the end.
On the course the day was dominated by the same name on
nearly all the pins as Don Richardson proceeded to show us all how to put
the ball near the pin or in the hole, whilst the eventual winner Cees Bosman
continued to tot up his points.
Back onto the busses for the long trip back to Pattaya
and Bobby Joes to be met by the man himself outside and grilling the burgers
on the barby whilst his special beans awaited the completion of the meal,
voted by all as up to his usual high standards.
Fully replete, the volunteer organiser for the day, Mick
O’Connor shouted out the results whilst Bobby’s waitress ‘Giggly’
presented the prizes to the lucky winners, particularly Don Richardson who
ended up with four shirts.

A special prize was presented for the booby prize, and
won by Jannie Jasperre, whilst special mention must be made of Joop Jasperre
who had 1 (yes 1) point on the front nine and 22 on the back nine. Queer
game this golf!
Winner: Cees Bosman

The Square Ring
Nothing is more contrite than a “know nothing” boxing
writer that gets the facts wrong. Nothing is more humbling than being that
“know nothing” boxing writer. My late Mom always said, “Admit what you
did and then I’ll spank you.” I was wrong. I got the venue for Shane
Mosley’s last Saturday nights meaningless win wrong. I wish to apologize
to the Mandalay Bay Casino in Las Vegas. They are NOT a fading star nor are
they “rundown.” They are state of the art. An experience. A place to
visit. I was thinking of another casino which fits the description of
“Worn” or “Fading” and usually puts on fights that are meaningless.
Like tomorrow night’s fight with IBF Champion Tim Austin (25-0-1)
defending against Rafael Marquez. Me? I’ll be 90 miles away in Laughlin
watching Vaia “The Lil Darlin” Zaganas put a whipping on yet another
victim.
Never say that Square Ring doesn’t bring the results.
Former WBC flyweight champion Medgoen Singsurat (29-2, 17 KOs) impressively
won a twelve round unanimous decision over former IBF title challenger
Alfren Bulala, capturing the vacant ABC superfly title in Bangkok. That
should be filed under “Who gives a rats posterior”.
Frequent Pattaya visitor Scottish Dave Stewart racked up
a mark in the win column. I know cause I got an e-mail from him. “I beat
Scott Lawton from Stoke-on-Trent. (His first pro loss in 6 fights).” He
also came down on the side of a fellow Scotsman in regard to Wayne
McCullough’s upcoming title fight. “About the Scott Harrison (18-1) -
Wayne McCullough (26-3) fight, I still edge towards Scott, even though I
also like McCullough. Have done since he was an amateur. I seen him beat
Johannes Maisa at the York Hall in London. I admit that it’s possible
Wayne could give Scott problems with his busy style. Whatever, it’s bound
to be a brilliant fight...” Take my pal Wayne for the “W”. “How can
they talk about Harrison’s power? He couldn’t knock out Tracy
Patterson,” said McCullough. Mr. McCullough is 100% correct. Harrison went
10 rounds with Patterson in April of 2000.
That same night as McCullough wins a title, March 22,
Thailand’s WBC 130lb champ Sirimongkol Singmanassuk (42-1) is supposed to
be defending his title against #1 Jesus Chavez (22-1). The fight is part of
a scheduled triple header to be shown in America as part of a pay-per-view
series called Latin Fury. Slight problem. Rumors have surfaced in America
that the “Thai Tiger” hurt his paw last time out. That was in January of
this year against Yong-Soo Choi in Tokyo. Sirimongkol got a unanimous
decision (119-109, 119-109, 118-110) but IF he suffered an injury he’s in
deep stuff. Many think he may be in deep stuff anyway against the tough
fighter from “Down Mexico Way.” The Square Ring was asked to check the
story out. An e-mail to Sirimingkol’s promoter got the following response:
“How should we know. We are only his promoter.” Another Thailand moment
and no darn camera.
Not really up to date with the “Aussie Lingo” so not
really sure if Mr. Larsen from the Northern Territories is happy or not.
“Whoever does the Square ring column (that would be me) obviously looks to
land a bite... well he landed one. Kostya Tszyu is a champion because of not
only how he fights, but by how he handles himself, deals with the media,
respects his opponents and raises his children. His record speaks for itself
and the way he conducts himself is twice as impressive. If boxing and boxers
were more like Kostya it would not have been tarnished as it has been and
will no doubt be again. Aaron Larsen, T Australia” I could not agree more.
I’m in the dark as to what “Take a bite means.” Maybe he means “take
a Mickey”. Tszyu is a very good fighter and a credit to the sport. That
aside he will never be a world wide super star. Currently there is Oscar
DeLaHoya and maybe Tyson. It’s a short list and doesn’t appear to be
getting any longer.
It’s been leaked that Tszyu was going to retire from
boxing. Not true. His next fight is scheduled for summer in the USA. Well
yes it will be winter in Australia but summer is America. He’ll fight IBF
#1 Arturo Gatti. Tszyu on his latest fight: “I was getting better as the
fight wore on and I would have knocked him out. He knew that, that’s why
the fight was stopped.” Tszyu spoke of enjoying the fact that he appeared
with 28,000 Aussie supporters in attendance. He was disappointed with
several aspects of the promotion. “I can tell you I was not responsible
for the seats, those who couldn’t see properly. I am not to be blamed for
this ... there were too many parties involved (in the promotion).”
Tszyu was also unhappy about the stories circulating of
bounced checks and hotels being owed money and complaints about the brevity
of several bouts on the undercard. Suggest that he check in with his
promoter, Vlad then. He’s the man that does the business.
The latest World Boxing Council ratings have been
released. Remarkable that a country the size of Thailand has as many
champions and contenders as it does. Super Feather Sirimongkol Singmanassuk,
Super Bantam International and #1 Napapol Kiatisakchokchai (21-1), Bantam
Champ Veeraphol Nakhonluang (40-1-1), Flyweight Champion Pongsaklek
Wonjongkam (46-2). Left out of the WBC ranking cause he’s with the WBA is
the Super Feather Yodsanan Nanthachai (3-K Battery). Not only maybe
Thailand’s best fighter but by far the best nickname. How about them
apples?
