Ghosts, ghouls & witches seen around town during scary Pattaya Halloween celebrations

All Hallows Eve this year was relatively subtle in Pattaya as there was only a small amount of paranormal activity when the city celebrated Halloween. Major party venues included Benihana Japanese American Steakhouse, who put on “scary” show for dinner guests. The staff there was decked out in a variety of bizarre costumes to entertain ghosts, goblins and ghouls from around the world with shows such as a power combat show, Tai Chi and Yoga Show. Traditional activities included apple bobbing and face painting both inside and outside the restaurant. Ghouls and goblins paraded around in athletic ware, strutting their stuff in a fun event for all attending.

The Hard Rock Cafe was next with their Ghouls and Witches night featuring a special ‘ghost Michael Jackson’ dance contest where contestants performed their best impression as the ghost of MJ. Nuttanut Danpoth took first prize in the dance contest. Executive assistant manager and wizard Mark Rummery manifested the prizes for the night as Hard Rockers partied on into the bewitching hour.

Shenanigans held their Halloween night on Saturday, November 1. With the entire pub decorated as a graveyard and resident skeletons, witches, vampires and murder victims all about, the Irish pub turned Transylvanian.

Governor Pisit Ketephasuk welcomes Chiangmai Mail to the province

The spacious grounds at the Khum Khantoke Lanna Cultural Center in Chiang Mai were filled to capacity as the well-wishers for our new newspaper, the Chiangmai Mail, were added to the normal throng of patrons at the Lanna dining salas.

Chiang Mai Governor Pisit Ketephasuk welcomed the new Chiangmai Mail to the northern community.

Chiang Mai Governor Pisit Ketephasuk cut the ceremonial ribbon to officially launch the new publication, as the Chiangmai Mail team proudly looks on.

Whilst most of the people present were the residents of Chiang Mai, there were also many people who had traveled up from Bangkok and Pattaya and other parts of Thailand to help the Chiangmai Mail Publishing group “wet the baby’s head” while they proudly displayed the new newspaper.

Now a proud Chiang Mai resident and managing director of the Chiangmai Mail, Michael Vogt introduced the executive committee to the people of Chiang Mai, starting with the chief executive officer, Xanxai Visitkul and the chairman of the board, Norachai Prasertmanukitch. The lanky American and very well experienced media person, Dan Dorothy, who is president and editor-in-chief was presented next, followed by general manager, Pratheep (Peter) Malhotra, another experienced newspaper publisher. Noted international columnist, Dr. Iain Corness and the executive manager of marketing and communications, Marion Vogt, were presented next followed by the local ‘man on the ground’ and editor, Phitsanu Thepthong.

Wannapa Wannasri (2nd right) representing Chanyuth Hengtrakul, Advisor to the Minister of Tourism and Sports, offers a bouquet of flowers for good luck to the Chiangmai Mail team.

(L to R) The public relations officer of the Maeping Police Station attended the party and gave his best wishes to the new Chiangmai Mail team, here represented by Michael Vogt, managing director and Marion Vogt, executive manager of marketing and communications.

The enthusiastic young team of Thai journalists, newshounds, office and sales staff were not forgotten either, coming up on stage, showing that the Chiangmai Mail is a real newspaper, employing very real and experienced personnel.

Governor Pisit Ketephasuk, in his address, welcomed the Chiangmai Mail to the province, saying that the mass media had always had a very significant part to play in getting important messages through to the community and as a gauge of the thoughts and needs of the populace. By now including the English speaking expat population, this showed good progress in the society and he gave his blessing to the new venture and hoped that it would be able to serve the community well for many years to come.

Here they are – the new Chiangmai Mail team.

Chiang Mai Governor Pisit Ketephasuk (center) and Borworn Rattanaprasit, deputy Chiang Mai governor, were greeted upon arrival by Mr. Wachara Tantranont, the owner of the fabulous Khum Khantoke Lanna Cultural Center (left), Chiangmai Mail chairman of the board, Norachai Prasertmanukitch (2nd left), Michael Vogt (3rd from right), managing director, Marion Vogt (2nd right), executive manager of marketing and communications and Chiangmai Mail editor Phitsanu Thepthong (right).

The following is a translation of Pisit Katephasuk’s speech, the Governor of Chiang Mai:

“Ladies and gentlemen, I am very pleased to report that Chiang Mai City now has one more newspaper for the locality. It is evident that the print media in Chiang Mai has long been accepted by the general public as the way to inform and educate our residents.

“While Chiang Mai has several local newspapers to serve the public, and act as an indicator of public opinion, on this occasion, it makes me very proud that the Chiangmai Mail is not only a newspaper of local origin, but is also one backed by experienced professionals in the mass media.

“They have jointly established the Chiangmai Mail, a newspaper which looks quite different from the other local publications, as it is published in English.

“Therefore, this newspaper is very significant as it will have an increasingly active role to play in the locality as Chiang Mai and neighboring provinces strive to promote tourism in this region to the English speaking tourists.

Thailand writer extraordinaire Peter Cummins (left) explains something in detail to good friend, and the first Pattaya Mail editor, Chuck Pringle, as Pattaya luminary Ib Ottesen listens in.

“Moreover, there is a large number of English speaking expats living in this region, carrying out business operations and other government services, with Chiang Mai City especially being the location of several foreign consulates. This new newspaper will be of great benefit to these people.

Chiangmai Mail will also provide benefits to Thais as well as foreigners, providing news and information on the local scene, and will inform the tourists of the traditions, and culture of Lanna people.

Pattaya Mail MD and now Chiangmai Mail GM Peter Malhotra (left) met up with his long-lost cousin Pichit Bharatbhumikul and friend Dr. Jaspal at the party.

“This newspaper has information, from both government and private sectors, including an analysis of the news, articles and opinions, in depth reports, as well as several interesting magazine style columns and features.

“Finally, I congratulate the Chiangmai Mail team that has launched this new local newspaper and I encourage this youngest newspaper to serve the North as well as it possibly can in the English language. I ask for your blessings for the Chiangmai Mail staff, that they will create a newspaper that will be successful and serve this community for many years to come.”

Following his address, Governor Pisit cut the symbolic ribbon, to the acclamation of the new newspaper and the party of well-wishers.

Aussie Winemakers come out in force

By Miss Terry Diner

Hot on the heels of Australian Winemaker Wolf Blass crowned best winemaker in the world at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in London last month, the Royal Cliff Wine Club held their latest Winemaker’s dinner featuring another top Australian wine producer, the BRL Hardy Wine Company, with one of their bright young winemakers, Chris Darling in attendance.

Bright young winemaker, Chris Darling (right) from the top Australian wine producer, the BRL Hardy Wine Company, and Royal Cliff’s wine captain Ranjith Chandrasiri at the Royal Cliff Wine Club’s latest Winemaker’s dinner at the Royal Cliff Beach Resort’s Grand Ballroom.

The event, held at the Royal Cliff Beach Resort’s Grand Ballroom, was considered important enough for BRL Hardy’s to also send over Terry Beckman, their export manager for SE Asia and Richard Sparrow their international sales manager. To add to the wine ‘heavyweights’ Ron Batori, the managing director of Ambrose wines was also present, plus the Royal Cliff’s wine captain Ranjith Chandrasiri.

That these winemaker’s dinners are now a ‘must attend’ event was shown by a sell-out attendance, with 150 members and guests filling the ballroom, with Mrs Panga Vathanakul present as the most gracious hostess.

With these top winemakers all acknowledging that these are world class events - BRL Hardy’s Terry Beckman even saying in his opening address that this dinner at the Royal Cliff was the equivalent of the best he had seen in Paris, New York or London - Walter Thenisch, the executive chef and his team also rose to the occasion with a six course dinner to complement the six wines accompanying the meal.

The dinner began with an extraordinary terrine of Tasmanian salmon and Port Lincoln tuna with marinated Clare Valley grapes, which was washed down with a lightly wooded Nottage Hill Chardonnay 2000 vintage.

The next course was, in my opinion, just sensational. It was a carrot and ginger flavoured veloute soup with saut้ed frog leg. The taste was amazing, with the ginger and carrot producing a remarkable flavour, and my choice of dish of the evening.

The next wine was another chardonnay from the limestone coast region of Australia and was a 1999 Stonehaven Chardonnay, a much more complex wine with stronger oak and deeper character. Chef Walter then produced a Lasagnette of eggplant with lobster, shrimps and mussels on a delicate saffron sauce to go with this wine. I make no secret of the fact that I used my bread roll to mop up the last traces of the sauce. Wonderful!

The next wine, a red to go with Walter’s Fillet of roasted Gippsland lamb, was the Leasingham Bin 61 Shiraz. This wine was the popular choice at a previous wine tasting held by the wine club, where it had beaten the other shiraz style wines from all over the world. It was still an excellent drop!

The following two wines were ones I had not tasted before, and Ron Batori told me that they were not available at all in Thailand, but had been brought in especially for the evening. They were from the Ebenezer vineyards and were a Shiraz (1998 vintage) and a ’98 Cabernet/Merlot. If these were available here they would retail around 5,000-7,000 baht a bottle Ron assured me. The Shiraz was a wonderfully aromatic wine, full bodied and my choice of the evening. Worth every baht that it would have cost. If you are visiting Australia, bring some back!

With the dessert came a very sweet dessert wine, a most interesting Padthaway Noble Riesling, 2001 vintage. A very fine example of the Botrytis effect on the grapes, the “noble rot” that produces the extra sugar.

The dinner also featured a variety of Australian cheeses, another area where the ‘New World’ has challenged the Europeans and also come out on top. Terry Beckman relishing the way the Australian home-grown cheeses were being attacked by the 150 diners.

It was once more a memorable evening with excellent wines and similarly excellent food. Anyone who enjoys good food and wine should make enquiries of this wine club, email [email protected] or speak directly with Ranjith Chandrasiri at the Royal Cliff Beach Resort 038 250 421.
