PSC Member’s Tournament turns twenty at Natural Park Hill

Natural Park Hill, generally considered the toughest venue of the area golf courses, pulled in its talons a bit to show mercy on the ninety-plus golfers who tackled it last Friday at the Pattaya Sports Club’s 20th Members Tournament.

C Flight, as usual, went the wildest with Gerhard Schulze winning with ... I’m sorry, I can’t even bring myself to say how many points he had. Suffice it to say it was a ton and that his handicap will never look the same again.

Winners A Flight Jim Bracket, B Flight Wayne Koch and C Flight Gerhard Schulze with PSC Golf Chairman Steven Donovan.

A more conventional level of success was exhibited by A Flight winner Jim Bracket who prevailed with 39 off a thrifty 7 handicap and by B Flight winner Wayne Koch with 38 points.

Kevin Taylor smashed a 290+ yard drive to win the lucrative men’s long drive honey pot. His reputation was not as imposing as women’s long drive winner Lamud Chaidara’s, however, who intimidated the field so significantly that no one entered against her!

Two Happy Irishmen

Graham Johnson showed laser-like accuracy by winning two nearest the pin awards, with the longer of the two being inside of three feet.

Andy Bettany won the inaugural (at least for the Members’ Tournament format) nearest the keg, which was donated by Shenanigan’s Irish Pub. By the time you read this article, Andy and his mates will be recovering from the celebration of an England victory over Denmark.

The following tournament sponsors provided donations which greatly enhanced this popular monthly outing: The Pattaya Sports Club, Cafe Kronborg (Soi Diana), Papa Ray, The Blue Parrot Bar and Restaurant (Soi Pattayaland Two), Tequila Reef Cantina (Soi 7), The Golf Shop (Soi Skaw Beach), Shenanigans Irish Pub (2nd Road) and the Diana Group’s Green Bottle Pub (2nd Road & Soi Diana).

The next Monthly Members’ Tournament is on Friday, July 26th at Laem Chabang. It is guaranteed to be very well attended.

Even the ones that are caught sometimes get away

There appeared to be little chance of rain and a favourable tide was in the offing so a good day’s fishing was in hand for Ray Milner & Jan Anderson fishing from J&M Bar. Captain Dang made an early call at the lighthouse in Pattaya Bay where they landed some small queen fish.

Moving on to the southern end of Koh Pi, these two fishermen landed two 5 lb queen fish, a sand ray and a barracuda.

A further move to the north of Koh Pi brought a lovely 10 lb queen fish. No sooner had they landed this one when a screaming reel and much turbulence in the water resulted in a fierce fight with something special promised. This fish stripped virtually all the line from the reel and resulted in a fair bit of time to retrieve and then it was off again porpoising across the water - a magnificent sight.

Fifteen minutes elapsed before a sweating Ray Milner realized what he had caught, a whopping great queen fish weighing in at 22 lbs., the best this year. A total of 27 fish were caught with a resulting match catch of 85 lbs.

Back at the J&M Bar where tales were told and the amber liquid flowed none of the fisherman noticed that two males and a female Thai calmly picked up the 3 black liner bags and walked off with the main fish catch!

A hue and cry was made when the loss was noticed resulting in a Thai male informing Big Dan at Jack Tar Bar where the missing fish may be. Big Dan, knowing the story thus far, went to investigate at the bottom of the Soi where some unsavoury characters had cut up the fish and were selling it off. Undeterred, Big Dan scooped what was left into a plastic bin liner and returned the unsold fish to the J&M Bar. Thanks to Dan there will probably be fish cakes on Sunday for the patrons of J&M Bar. The moral of this story - some fish did truly get away!

For further info on Pattaya Sports Club Fishing contact Frank Collins at Fish & Trips Bar or Middy Campbell at J&M Bar both bars located on Soi 6.

Ooy bowls best game and series of the week to lead the House of the Golden Coin to a four-point sweep

Pattaya Sports Club Friday Bowling League

Ooy rolled games of 179, 222, 194, for a 595 series, and Captain Mio added a 523 series to lead House of the Golden Coin to a four-point sweep of Three Sisters.

Golden Coin did not gain any ground on the Winchester Club as they also took four points in their match against Cafe Ole. Udom with Cafe Ole was the only Winchester player to break the 500 series mark as she knocked down 527 pins but the Winchester Club had good balanced bowling from all of their bowlers, which gave them the win.

200 bowlers Kran, Ooy, Tue, Bill and Jon.

Cafe Kronborg continued their climb up the standings by taking all four points from Nice & Sleazy. Kronborg was just to strong for the Nice & Sleazy team with Captain Kran rolling a 214 game, 525 series, Bill a 201 game and 556 series, Konrad had a 506 series and Suphan a 482 pin count. Tue had a 202 game and 559 series for the Nice & Sleazy team.

Shakey Pete’s took three points from VFW Post 9876 behind Jon’s 206 game, 516 series. Pin rolled a 500 series for the VFW team.

PH3 Run 953

Lucky me! I sign up number 70 and what’s on the back of the ticket? Scribe! A long bus drive out to the A-site finds us in new Monday running country. The circle is called and the new shoes on-in. Old Speckled Hen and Drippy, good to see you back in town again Drippy. The hares for the day C Face and A Marine Called Mary on-in to explain the run. I must explain at this point that Mary had already told me which way to go for the short cut and he suggested I take Uncle Fester with me... How slow do you think I am? Cheating! Me never, I’m certainly not as slow as Fester. So off on the run, I did cheat a little bit, but only after I went face down in the muddy creek.

Good run although there was a lot of paper used in a few places, so much in fact that Sir Airhead and Uncle Pervy became hypnotised by it and ended up doing the whole run. Everyone arrived back safely at the A-site and commenced drinking large amounts of beer. Fini our Grand Master called the circle then immediately called in Dr. Pinky to do the raffle. Missing Personality was iced for too much talking and wanting to ice the Belgians and Sneak Out Sprout was iced for giving Dr. Pinky grief about the raffle and for taking the last seat on the bus.

Next we had the hares on-in, a vote was taken and a good run was the order of the day, well done Face and Mary! T4 and Spaghetti Head were brought in next and given the pleasure of sitting on the ice for services rendered as beer truck security. Charlie Manson and myself both know what an exhausting job this is, as we have both done it before. Well done T4 and Spag Head, keep up the good work.

Visitors are called in next, welcome from Okinawa, Bangkok and Puerto Galera, Okinawa guys on ice for not buying a hash shirt. At this point in the evening Tampax streaks across the circle and takes his weekly tumble, will somebody buy this man some training wheels!

Sir Airhead’s circle, hares on-in, once again it was decided it was a good run and a first time virgin hare for A Marine Called Mary. Sir Airhead had to trim his weekly show down to a few minutes due to having no box to write on. The returners came next - to mention a few, welcome home Flying Frog and Drippy. The Okinawa Hash had already given us a song but A Marine Called Mary, never a man to be outdone on-in to give us his version, stick to your day job mate!

At this point someone notices the bus driver has found Uncle Pervy’s stash of home brew and is now on his back in the dirt doing the dying fly. Some ice and a down down for Pervy. At last justice was given and a prize from last week’s Betty Boop run was awarded to Old Speckled Hen for being the best dressed. Fini was iced for his bad judgement.

Sir Chicken was next in with one of his famous Beatles songs about Sir Airhead ‘When I’m 64' great song. Anniversaries next, Hoi Jube got her 200th run mug and Blowfly got his 250th run plastic cup, the real one to come.

At this point I ran out of paper to take any more notes. The hares song next, not bad but A Marine Called Mary definitely needs to work on it! Hats off pots on the floor, the Okinawa guys on-in to do their version of the hash hymn to round off a very pleasant day, then everyone on the bus and back to The Classroom for some very good food, thanks Scott. Well done guys great run. On-on Obewan

A note from the Hash editor:

It once again saddens me to report the death of a fellow PH3 hasher. During May Bony Arse Bob had a stroke and died. He had been running with the PH3 since run #772 and he completed a total of 63 runs. A sad loss, R.I.P. Bob.

The Windmills have lost their clogs

Lawn Bowls Division One

The Windmills lost their unbeaten record to the Carlsberg Kids in a tense thriller with the winning block shot coming from Dave on his last bowl leaving Dennis nowhere to go but home. The score was 14-13.

New girl on the block, Noi from the Hasbeens bowled with her husband Terry (keep taking the vegetables) and out-bowled the highly rated all girl Ying Yangs.

Steve the Streak and Pete the Post beat the Buriram Stompers 23-7. There will be no tea for Steve tonight as Piow, Steve’s wife, plays for the Stompers.

Bob of the Dream Team played some of the best bowls of his life. He even got two bowls closest on one end. Keep up the good work Bob (20-14).

Match of the week: Carlsberg Kids V The Windmills
Team of the week: The Hasbeens
Player of The week: Noi from The Hasbeens
Lawn Bowls Division Two:

Team of the week and player of the week Willy calmed down from his mid week crisis to win the second division, beating the Growlers 24-6. Keep going Growlers, you can still get a promotion.

Eddy the Eagle soared to crush the rubber room boys of the Asylum 2. Anybody know where Rob is? Curly stepped in for Willy to play with Peter who was just back from England to help the Chaplin Spamheads narrowly beat Winchester 16-14.

“Doc” sweeps the sweeps

IPGC TAGGS Golf from The Haven

Monday 10th June 2002 - Treasure Hill (Stableford)

1st: Stephen Beard, 38 points
2nd: Anders Karlsson, 36 cb9 18
3rd: Mike Davies, 36 cb9 16
4th: Trevor Schirmer, 34 cb9 20
5th: Mo Bertrand, 34 cb9 18
6th: Brian Kelly, 34 cb9 17

What was to be the start of a remarkable run for the “Doc” started at the distant, but worth the trip, scenic Treasure Hill layout, as he swept round the eighteen hitting most of the fairways with his trusty three wood and missing most of the greens. He was closely followed by Anders, playing his last game before returning home to the Philippines, and Mike, who had to be separated by count back, as were the chasing pack of Trevor, Mo and Brian.

The twos were shared between Amphiw Rimngan, Gordon Langtry, Stephen Beard and David Ferguson.

Wednesday 12th June - Burapha West (Bogey)

1st: Stephen Beard, 4 up
2nd: Nick Hurn, 2 up
3rd: Brian Kelly, 1 up cb9 all square
4th: Bob Lindborg, 1 up cb9 1 down

Near pins: 5th Dr. Tom Gingerich, 8th Ciano Glavinia, 11th Yazuo Suzuki, and 17th Nuan Feaungoi

The day was in honour of Brian Kelly’s 51st (sic) birthday and he generously added four near pins and a draw prize for everyone attending the prize giving to make it a day to remember for some time to come.

In honour of his 51st (sic) Birthday, Brian Kelly (right) generously added four near pins and a draw prize Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Doc (centre) had a week not soon to be equalled, and was well-rewarded by Richard Livingston (left) the resident PGA professional.

In the event, the “Doc” again proved untouchable, as he slipped into third gear and cruised round both nines in two under, once again splitting the fairways with the three wood and chopping the irons.

Nick led the trailing pack just pipping the “Birthday Boy” and Bob, who seems to perform much better when he is unattended. No doubt due to the fact he is looking forward to relaxing about halfway to the festivities.

The twos pool was shared between Ciano Glavinia and Nick Hurn.

Prior to the prize giving, Richard Livingston the resident PGA professional welcomed back Steve Lockhart, Richard Lyne and Doctor Tom Gingerich. The latter is currently on an extended holiday and is taking the time to study for another doctorate to add to his PhD in Metaphysics.

Friday 14th June - Green Valley (Stroke)

1st: Stephen Beard, 70
2nd: Mike Davies, 72
3rd: Trevor Schirmer, 73
4th: Trevor Edge, 74 cb9 36.5
5th: Mike Dabanovich, 74 cb9 37

Incredibly once again the “Doc” took charge of the course, now dropping into overdrive, to record his third win of the week and set a record at The Haven that may take some time to equal, winning a Stableford, Bogey and Medal competition in one week of unforgettable golf, for him at least, and leave the rest of the competitors to wonder what they have to do to stop him.

Mike Davies took his second podium position of the week to underline his improvement following his lessons with Richard, as did Trevor in third place who still continues to play to his new and lower handicap. They were trailed by Trevor edge, placing for the first time in a little while and the ever-present “Dabber”, who is still looking for the door marked “out”.

The “Doc” is now threatening to start using the driver for something other than just measuring. This will most likely result in a total loss of any semblance of a swing and reduce him down to the ranks of the also-rans. Amen say the rest of us.

The twos were shared between Serge Straeten and Stephen Beard, and although Phil Groves also had one, he had forgotten to enter and therefore missed out on another large pot.

Back at The Haven, Richard welcomed new member Alfie Nield, whilst welcoming back Serge Straeten, Dave Nance and Moe Deverdenne.

“Little Ian Edwards” proved to be “Big Ian Edwards”

Three Sisters Golf

Monday the 10th must have bee a good day for golfing. Scores from the Three Sisters Golfers improved over the last few weeks as three players surged past the 40 mark. “Little Ian Edwards” proved to be “Big Ian Edwards” as he ripped the course apart, coming in with 44 Stableford points. Ian won the bragging rights by 2 shots as Doug Powell tried to catch up but fell short with 42 points. Close on Doug’s heels was George Davis with 41 points. The rest of the field fell away and are still waiting for the return of Kevin Mitch to give these guys some competition at the top.

Holding up the rest of the field this week was Eddie Rudkin who just returned to the land of smiles from jolly England. Eddie will be around for about another three months so he will have a chance to redeem himself in the coming weeks. It may have been the jet lag that kept Eddie in the cellar, but time will tell.

After the golf game the golfers retired to the Three Sisters Bar to watch the Korean/U.S.A. football game. Ian Edwards supplied the funds to feed a group of hungry golfers as spaghetti and meat sauce was had by all. Everyone had a good time, especially Ian.

Fireman one, Firebird nil

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at the Bunker

On Tuesday, June 11, the Bunker Boys made the short trip to Phoenix Country Club for their weekly stroke play competition. Only one division competed on the Mountain and Ocean nines and it was a couple of returning Bunker Boys who were to steal the show.

The round of the day was scored by “Fireman” Danny Greer, a member at Phoenix, and he produced a round of the highest quality when he shot net 65. At the weekend he will surely come rocketing down the fireman’s pole in the handicap lists!

Chasing him very hard was returning Scot Jon Wood who ironed out the kinks in his game to score net 66. In third place was the ever consistent Roy Mitchell who had an amazing thirteen birdie opportunities in his round of net 68 on a course which he claims to hate!

Surprisingly he did not register a two, and neither did anyone else, thus keeping the Bunker Super Sawng under wraps for a day or two longer. Bryn Jones was an early candidate for the Bunker Banana Booby when he played the wrong ball on the Mountain second, thus incurring a two shot penalty, but it was eventually awarded to Keith Saunders for his highest net score of 89, which included at least six balls in the water on the last three Mountain nine holes.

But at the end of the day the honours went to the Fireman who had thoroughly extinguished the firebird in Ban Amphoe.

Firemen at the double

The deliciously challenging course at Khao Kheow played a very welcome host to a depleted field of Bunker Boys on Friday, June 14, some others obviously relishing their favourite team’s performance in the World Cup! The course was in fine form but everyone was taken aback by the pace of the greens. Nobody could remember seeing faster greens in Thailand and even those at Bangpra would have been slow by comparison.

The format was Stableford and the day was to be remarkable for the coincidence of the winners. Fireman Danny Greer won the second division with his score of 32 points to complete a winning double for the week and in division one ex-NYFD officer, John Biangazzo topped the list with his 34 points. He obviously liked the pace of the greens and his clinical putt on the C3 hole also assured him of the Bunker Super Sawng award.

But, how have the mighty fallen! Jon Wood, a hero with net 66 two days previously, struggled to score 19 points and was rewarded with the Bunker Banana Booby for his dismal efforts. For the few who took part in the event it was another fine day on one of the Bunker Boys favourite courses.

Put your helmet on, Tower’s on the tee

P.S.C. Golf from the Cafe Kronborg

Monday 10 June- Green Valley (Stableford)

Green Valley always has been and always will be one of the premier golf courses in this area and to visit it is not only a pleasure but to a golfer a privilege, especially at the good rates we enjoy with this top class course.

Rick Evans - winner A flight.

So, the beautiful and ‘Green’ Green Valley Rayong layout was host to a Stableford competition for twenty brave souls under very hot and humid conditions. There were two flights, A flight was 0 to 19 and B flight was 20 and above.

Rick Evans took the A flight with 36 points, the ever present Ebrahim came second with 34 points and Lee Adelly third on count back from Duncan Lee and Frank Sinclair.

Ian Halfpenny took the B flight with 39 points, big Pete Galle was second with 37 points, and Mick (still improving) O’Connor was third off his new provisional handicap of 20.

Thursday 13 June - Pattaya C.C.

The nice thing about playing at Pattaya Country Club is that it’s just like putting on that old sweater or those old pair of shoes to ‘slop around in’. The scenery is nothing to write home about, nice but uninspiring, the course is tough without being nasty enough to make a grown ‘person’ (ever politically correct) tremble, and the greens at present need coring, but every time its on the schedule the old faithfuls come out of the cracks to play it. The thing that it excels at is the quality of its fairways; we all like a grassy fairway that allows a ball to sit on top of the grass, this Pattaya does the best of all. Oh happy days.

A flight winner Ian Edwards

In the best of conditions, cool if a little overcast with humidity about to sneak up on one, the boys set forth to do battle but generally speaking fired blanks, with at the end of the day only two golfers beat par and one equalled it. Tiger eat your heart out at this display of totally average golf.

However, there were ‘high’ spots, and one of them was in the B flight where the winner was Tyrone ‘Tower’ Bridge who played one of his normal games of belt the cover off the ball see where it lands and belt it again. When he can find the ball he has been known to have a good round and this time the water/bunker/tree Gods were on his side and he shot not only 40 points but I am unreliably informed three ducks, an elephant or two, four caddies and a school of whales in one of the ponds. Suffice to say this magnificent display earned him not only the B flight win but the ‘Order of the Steel Helmet’ and three genuine ‘Made in Taiwan’ steel golf helmets for his partners.

Second in B flight on 35 points was Alan Lord and third losing second on count back was Barry Kerr.

B flight winner “Tower” Bridge

Lets now get to the important part of the competition. The winner of the A flight was Ian Edwards with 38 points, and try as we did to disqualify him we couldn’t find anything wrong. His card was filled in correctly, scores correct, all the rules of golf covered, I even offered a reward leading to facts to aid disqualification, but all in vain. So Ian won, and I had to be content with second, but there’s always next time.

Second in A flight was Derek Brook 36 points and third Ebrahim on 33 points. I told Ian I bear him no ill feelings but the contract for the hit has been placed.

There’s a good deal of low season golf about

by Mike Franklin

Steve Donovan, PSC Golf Chairman, recently circulated a list of low season promotions being run by a number of the leading golf courses, some valid to as late as the end of October. Here are two more that are well worth a look...

Pattaya Country Club is offering an Associate Member Card for B.500 which gives discounts of 50% off green fees, access to and 30% off resort facilities, and 10% off food in the restaurant. If taken up before August 31st the card will be valid for one year. All you need to do is ask. They take the photo and you just pay the B.500 Associate Membership fee.

The ‘Low Season’ promotion runs until 31st August 2002 with these options: Without Associate Membership, the ‘low season’ (up to August 31st) weekday green fee is B.496 and a golf cart B.450. However, if you tee-off between 6 and 11 a.m. that green fee allows you to play all day (up to 3 rounds!), with the golf cart free for the extra rounds.

With the Associate Member Card the weekday green fee reduces to B.354 between 6 and 11 a.m. for golf all day, and a one-off B.450 fee for a golf cart.

Alternatively, if you choose to tee-off after 2.30 p.m. the green fee is only B.248 and a golf cart B.250. But it gets better, as with the Associate Member Card the green fee, after 2.30 p.m., discounts to just B.177.

The caddy fee stays at the normal B.200 per 18 holes throughout.

Pattaya Country Club is one of the few courses to run a regular Monthly Medal Tournament, the next being on Friday June 28th. This is open to all members and associate members and you can just turn up and enter on the day. Three divisions, plus a ladies division, tee off between 6 a.m. and noon. The entry fee is only B.800 and includes green & caddy fees, buffet (party starts 5 p.m.) with free drinks all night, lucky draw, trophies and valuable prizes.

And, if you are not already an Associate Member of Pattaya Country Club, they will make you one on the day free of charge, and you pay only the B.800 tournament entry fee. That sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

For more information contact Khun Malinee, marketing director, at Pattaya Country Club on 038 423-718.

Play All Day at Eastern Star Resort

Eastern Star has beefed up its normal promotion day by making the B.450 Green Fee valid for the whole day on Wednesday, with lunch included, during June and July. The buffet lunch, in the newly named Dow Bu La Pa Restaurant, is currently a ‘Thai Food & Thai Fruits Festival’ with a wide variety of exotic dishes.

Groups of four are encouraged to visit the resort for a one night weekday stay in a luxury Jr. suite for B.5,000 that includes breakfast, green & caddy fees for 18 holes of golf for four persons.

The same package is available for groups of four at the weekend for an inclusive charge of B6,700.

However, should you be contemplating marriage, Eastern Star Resort has a Wedding Package for 100 pax at a cost of just B.20,000 to include food & beverage, and a one night stay in the Honeymoon Room for the happy couple.

The Golf Group Weekday &Weekend packages, and the Wedding Package are available until October 31st 2002.

For more information contact Khun Supoj, marketing director at 038 630 410.

Please note: Eastern Star Golf course will be closed on Monday 24th June due to a staff recreational outing.
