Forty students from International School Eastern Seaboard learned about waste disposal and recycling when they visited the Eastern Seaboard Environmental Complex (ESBEC). John L. Hamilton, ESBEC site manager, showed the students around and provided them with valuable information that they can take back to their school.

Lions Club of Pattaya rewards best speller

Lion Somchai Manothaworn, the immediate past president of the Lions Club of Pattaya, presented a trophy and a scholarship fund of 2,000 baht to Thanyarat Orrapol from Phothisamphan Pitayakarn School. Thanyarat won second prize in the national spelling bee held in Bangkok. School director, Prasit Laung-Tong and teachers welcomed the group. Lion Somchai said the spelling bee was supported by Naris Petcharat, the local Lions district governor who said this activity should be supported because it is, “an advantageous project to open the vision of Thai language to Thai youths.”

MCCI Fun Fair relives America’s Wild West

Sheriff Barbara led the school in the opening parade.

A hundred cowboys and cowgirls rounded up for a showdown at the Montessori Children’s Center International annual Fun Fair. Of course there were no shoot-outs at the OK Coral, since guns and weapons were not allowed, but there were plenty of games such as raffles, a silent auction, golf and face painting.

A little cowgirl gets her face painted just like the rodeo clowns.

This year’s theme was “Country Fair” which was created around America’s Wild West days. Teachers, parents and children dressed in cowboy gear, panned for gold, and played some very unusual games such as ‘rope the horse’, Yee-ha! Bingo; milk-the-cow, and bang-the prairie-dog. Guess those games aren’t too popular anymore, but these kids had a wonderful time and the Wongamat Campus where the fair was held was really jumping.

Farming was a big part of taming the Wild West.

The youngsters were particularly delighted with Barbara Thomas, MCCI administrator. She took on the role of country sheriff for the day. The kids were having too much fun to get into mischief so Sheriff Barbara made no arrests. At the end of the day the ravenous gang of cow-punchers and rough-riders sat down to a hearty meal.

IAPN makes a donation to the Scouts

Recently the International Association of Professional Numismatists (IAPN) held their 51st General Assembly in Bangkok. The IAPN is the most prestigious group in the world involved in ethical coin collecting.

Jan Olav Aamlid from House of the Golden Coin of Pattaya and a member of the IAPN talks about his experiences being a Scout leader in Thailand.

During the congress the delegates visited the Jim Thompson House where a Thai dinner and Thai classical dancing were enjoyed. The delegates, all dressed in the Thai Mahom, used the sky train to go to the Jim Thompson House. At the closest station, National Stadium, Thai Scouts met the delegates and led them to the Jim Thompson House.

Two senior members of the Executive Board of the National Scout Organization of Thailand were present, Sutham Phanthusak of Woodlands Resort, Pattaya and Dr. Med. Yongyudh Vajaradul. Both were very informative about scouting in Thailand and the forthcoming World Jamboree to take place in Sattahip at the end of this year / beginning of next. One of the members of IAPN and a Thai Scout leader, Jan Olav Aamlid of House of the Golden Coin, Pattaya, also told the entourage about his experiences as a scout in Thailand.

President Arthur Friedberg of the IAPN presents over 100,000 baht to a representative of Thai Scouts. In the middle is Dr. Med. Yongyudh Varjaradul, an executive board member of the National Scout Organization of Thailand.

When IAPN visits a country, they normally make a donation to charity. It did not take long before it was agreed that a donation would be given to the Scouts of Thailand, and a collection was taken from the 33 delegates. More than 100,000 baht was collected, and President Arthur Friedberg presented the money to a representative of the National Scouting Organization of Thailand. President Arthur Friedberg asked that the money would be spent for physically challenged scouts and for buying uniforms for scouts who cannot afford to buy one.

Several of the members of the IAPN once belonged to the Scouts and Kent M. Froseth, Minnesota, USA, informed that his first Badge of Achievement was for Coin Collecting. Once a Scout always a Scout.
