River trip a success for ISR students

Making waves! Maratti, Fiona, Kate and Nikita from ISR enjoying their trip up the river.

A group of Year 6 students from ISR took to the water recently when they took part in the “Magic Eyes” Chao Phraya Barge Program.

The aim of the 2-day course was to promote environmental awareness by looking at aspects of the Chao Phraya River in some detail. The students were split into groups for the various exercises and challenges, with the emphasis put on teamwork, consideration and cooperation.

One of the topics covered was the gauging of water cleanliness by looking closely at the water hyacinth and discovering exactly what was living among the roots of the those curious floating plants.

Other activities included looking at farmland on Koh Kret and a stop at Wat Pai Lom in order to find out why, every year, the Asian open-billed stork - native of India - chooses to next there. Wat Pai Lom is the largest nesting site in the world for these birds, and the answer turned out to involve rice-eating snails!

Up river, towards Ayutthaya, the students thoroughly enjoyed the chance to do a spot of canoeing and even some swimming. After all that exertion, the berths on the barge, together with the gentle motion of the river, ensured a very comfortable night.

The newly formed Suan Phrydsasad Foundation organized a party and “thamboon” Buddhist ceremony on January 19 in to celebrate the opening of a new school for the children of parents who are employed at Nong Nooch Tropical Gardens.

The Foundation was formed to raise funds to replace an already crowed school building where more than 200 students were receiving their education sponsored by Nong Nooch management. General manager Sodawan Barunasiri explained that the school not only supports the education for employees’ children, but also includes enrollment of children in nearby areas and provides a welfare fund for employees and family members who wish to further their own education.

During the fund-raiser on the 19th, Gen Sant Sarutanond, director general of the National Police Bureau was the special guest of honor and donated B10,000 to support the new school. Other guests included members of the Jomtien-Pattaya Rotary Club and Pattaya-Taksin Rotary Club president Peter Thorand, who presented a donation of B15,000 to the foundation. The total cost of building the new school came to B450,000.

At the party it was confirmed that fund-raising efforts had produced a remarkable total of B237,533 and all participants in the fund-razing were praised for their tireless efforts.

The school recently obtained authorization to be named “Nong Nooch Suan Phrydsasad Foundation School”. Nong Nooch management and the teachers at the new school fully support the Thai government’s anti-drug campaign. In addition to providing a good education for the students, the school’s philosophy and curriculum will endeavor to provide direction and the necessary social and moral values necessary for young people to become socially responsible adults.

Children of the employees of Nong Nooch, along with management, staff and members of the Rotary attended a “thamboon” Buddhist ceremony to celebrate the opening of the Nong Nooch Suan Phrysasad Foundation School.
