The Poulsens bid Pattaya a fond farewell

Niel and Alice Poulsen held a farewell party last week at the Viking Beachcomber on Soi Pattayaland 2. It was a farewell party because by the time this is published the both of them will have flown out of Thailand. Many of the couple’s friends joined in to bid them ‘Hasta La Vista’, and were treated to plenty of amber fluid flowing, the traditional rotating swine and assorted salads to compliment the evening’s refreshments.

Niel and Alice (2nd and 3rd from right) bid farewell to their many friends, including Cherie (right), Clarisse (front) and Ian Harrington (hiding in the back).

Both Niel and Alice have been active in the Pattaya community since their arrival 5 years ago, with Alice becoming involved in the PILC and their service at the Fountain of Life, which led to becoming involved with the Jesters Motorcycle Club and eventually leading to what has become one Pattaya’s major fundraising events in the year, ‘The Jester’s Care for Kids Children’s Fair’. Niel is well known for his support of the fair, having been the first and the longest standing platinum sponsor for the fair on behalf on Siam Chonburi Steel Mill Services.

Now, however, their dream has changed and this lively couple will now move on their next phase of life. Alice is still in denial about leaving while Niel is more philosophical about the move, “I have mixed feelings but we have to move on to the next phase. (There are) new adventures to be had,” said Niel.

Pattaya wishes Alice and Niel the best of luck in their new adventure and certainly hope to see them back for the Children’s Fair in September. Alice sounded optimistic, “We’ll be back!”

After a short stint in Seattle, both Niel and Alice will return to Houston, Texas in search for their next adventure.

Skiing at the Amari

Yoddle-oddle-ay-hee-hoo! Henry J Bean’s received a dusting of snow last week – and as all good party places do, they turned it into a fun-for-all “ski” party.

The Amari Orchid Resort held an “apr่s ski” party at Henry J. Bean’s Bar and Grill, with the diner and staff suitably decked out in the winter gear and much “snow” on the floor. Guests were treated to the traditional Gluehwein, a kind of Swiss hot toddy, along with other well known (to the ski group) drinks and snacks. After several days, the cleaning staff were still finding polystyrene snow in all little nooks and crannies. Having had Xmas in July in Henry J Bean’s last year, having a ski party in January came as no surprise!

Mata Hari serves up a little magic

by Miss Terry Diner

Henk Romeijn gave a magical performance at Mata Hari.

Just to show there is more to life than just food, local restaurateur, the ebullient Louis from Mata Hari, pulled a rabbit out of the hat, rather than from the cooking pot last week. Celebrated international magician Henk Romeijn, the only conjurer to have been summonsed to the Royal Dutch House on three occasions to perform in front of their Majesties, added a packed house at Mata Hari to his list of achievements. Delighting the diners of all ages, Henk produced balls out of thin air, disappeared ladies’ rings (but did give them back later), knocked the spots off playing cards and charmed the watches off diner’s wrists.

Henk is a regular visitor to Pattaya and had asked Louis for some time to allow him to entertain the guests. It was a magical evening, both from the dining out point of view and for the amusement Henk Romeijn gave to Mata Hari’s customers.

When Tuesday falls on a Friday

Since Pattaya managed to have Xmas in July and Apres Ski parties in the sun, why shouldn’t Pattaya hold Tuesday on Friday? That is what the Blues Factory did last weekend by holding their Mardi Gras on Friday. Keen students of La Belle France will avow that “Mardi” means Tuesday, sorry chaps!

Kicken’ it up at the Blues Factory’s Mardi Gras.

No matter what the reason (or the excuse) it was one fabulous night at the Blues Factory, with Greg Carroll having an even larger grin than usual (or perhaps he just swallowed his harmonica?) as guest artists climbed on the stage. Between the irrepressible Ernie and Lam Morrison, two bands, masked ladies and great music, the Friday Tuesday was a rip roaring success. Even Barrie looked like he stopped worrying! When is the next one?
