Korean Children’s Folk Dancing Corps put on a great show

Students at the International School of the Regents were recently treated to a highly entertaining mix of classical ballet and traditional Korean folk dance when the Korean Children’s Folk Dancing Corps paid a visit to the school. Superb choreography and colorful traditional costumes combined to produce a wonderful display from the young dancers, all members of the Korean Dancing Academy and the Universe Ballet Academy, who were visiting Thailand following tours in the United States and Europe.

Book Week at GIS

It was recently Book Week at Garden International School, and during this week pupils from Nursery to Year 9 had a literary week. Many book related activities were carried out in the classrooms including reading, writing and making books of all types. Many volunteers read stories to different aged audiences!

Children in the Primary Department at GIS were entertained by author of stories, screenplays and newspaper columnist, Khun Bhubhing Bhangsa-Ard.

The week started with a Bookshop from Duangkanol on Monday and ended with a bookshop from Foyles Books to enable parents to buy good quality English books for their children.

Friday also saw a special assembly when all children and staff dressed up as a character from a book of their choice. The book written by last year’s students in book week at GIS was read out for all to hear, “The Adventures of Gummy Bear”.

Children in the Primary Department at GIS were entertained by author of stories, screenplays and newspaper columnist, Khun Bhubhing Bhangsa-Ard. Father of Namtoei, a student in Reception class at Garden International School, he told children how to start on a career of writing and of the benefits of such a career. He kept the children interested with lively chatter about how and why he became an author. He also treated them to details of the most favorite book he has written. His main advice, in case any others wish to know was: read a lot as this will improve your ideas and vocabulary and start writing a dairy with your thoughts and actions daily.

Survivors at Garden International School

The winning team, voted by their peers were Vanessa, Quang and Andrew – well done you three!

Year 9 at Garden International School recently undertook their own version of ‘Survivor’ – the cult TV programme – selecting one group of 3 students as the most likely to survive on ‘Joule Island’. Utilising the knowledge gained from studying an energy topic, the teams were set the challenge of beginning a community on the imaginary Pacific isle, harnessing and conserving the fragile, but rich natural resources there. Each group had a week to research, develop their ideas and finally present their plans. Geo-thermal, wind, wave and tidal power were all used in ingenious ways and the level of understanding was very impressive. The winning team, voted by their peers were Vanessa, Quang and Andrew – well done you three!

Mr. Daniels, their Science teacher, felt it was a valuable experience requiring teamwork, research and an opportunity for self-evaluation. These qualities would all be needed in the build-up to May’s SAT examinations. Good luck Year 9!

Dutch School takes temple tour

On a cloudy morning all Dutch children from the Dutch School located in St. Andrews International School went on a Temple tour.

Children from the Dutch School took a temple tour and visited the Buddha image carved on a rock cliff.

In advance they learned about Buddhism during their lessons at school.

The day started at Phra Buddha Maha Vajira Uttamopassasda, a Buddha image carved on a rock cliff of Khao Cheejun.

Then they went to the Chinese Temple Viharnra Sien and saw the story of Buddha’s life so nicely painted. There were also nice statues and miniature vessels and a floating market to visit.

After a snack and a short playtime they went to Phra Pokklao Ariyakhet, a place of waxed monk images, which was very impressive.

The last stop on the trip was the Ubosoth, or the ordination hall. This hall houses the principal Buddha Image, Phra Buddha Nyan-Nares.

This was the end of a very nice day and as they did not see it all, will definitely go back next school year.
