Readers’ Queries

Dear Mekhala,

Can you please tell me where to find good videos of Thai cooking here? I am especially looking for authentic recipes for chicken and coconut milk soup and Thai seafood salad with fresh not packet ingredients.

With thanks, Sue

Dear Sue,

The great video “Secrets of the Thai Kitchen” reveals the authentic recipes for both Tom Kha Gai and Yam Talay that you are searching for, plus ten more quick and easy mouth watering recipes. As an added bonus, additionally the secrets of several sauces and great freezing tips for chicken stock, the clarity of a good fish sauce and more. The chef Iain Arthur only asks that you keep the secret!

Iain began his working life as a chef at West End London’s famous Cafe Royal. Cooking is the love of his life. He has spent years searching out the little secrets that define the difference between just a home cooked exotic dish and one with a unique, distinctive combination of flavours that seems to be available only in their country of origin. Now he has formed his own production company to let you in on the secrets, too. Iain takes you on a tour of the local Pattaya food markets, first buying the fresh ingredients then into the kitchens of the renowned Nova Lodge Hotel. I was truly impressed; I didn’t realize that authentic Thai cooking could be so quick and easily achieved from fresh ingredients. “Secrets of the Thai Kitchen” video is available from Asia Books or at the Nova Lodge Hotel, 137 Moo 9, Central Pattaya Road. Telephone 66-38 420016. Price 600 baht.

Dear Roundabout,

For a year I have been after those terracotta pots with decorated pierced lids that hold mosquito coils. A friend gave me one that she said was made locally. I have a large terrace and want ten of them. Can you help me out?

Sincerely, Anne

Dear Anne,

Those magic terracotta mosquito coil pots, approximately 150 baht each plus many more terracotta pots, lamps and ornamental fish as well as delicious fresh fruit and vegetables and other Thai artefacts are available locally at Phu Luang. It really is worth the forty-minute drive. Located 3.5 km north of the Green Valley Golf Course, on Route 3376, Makham Koo Road, Ban Chang, Rayong. Phu Luang is a unique place. I guess you could call it a laid back Thai style health spa. It offers genuine Thai hospitality in beautiful tranquil surroundings. You can swim or exercise in their large swimming pool with aqua aerobics and well-equipped changing rooms. The day I visited I was treated to an amazing olive oil massage then covered with banana leaves to marinate in the sun for twenty minutes. It was a heavenly way to shed all those toxins. They also have a covered outdoor Thai cafe serving health food and Thai cuisine. Shopping is great, too, as they sell local arts and handicrafts, including pottery, tablecloths, quilts teapots, stationary and silverware, and fruit and vegetables for the King’s project, all at very affordable prices. Take your swimmers, shop and stay for lunch.

Dear Mekhala,

I have been desperate to get hold of gold spray paint for ages. Last time I returned from Australia customs confiscated my aerosol can. I have not been able to find any gold spray paint anywhere here. Do you know of any available?

Cheers, Mirin

Dear Mirin,

You have not been looking in the right places. Gold spray paint is available in many of the hardware shops on Thepprasit Road. Happy shopping.
