Thai Farmers Bank champion team in the Anand Panyarachun ‘1.2 Million Baht’ Charity Golf Invitational

Event sponsor, Eastern Star Resort & Executive Conference Center pulled out all the stops to make this inaugural Anand Panyarachun Charity Golf Invitational a day to remember.

In perfect weather, and on a superbly presented Robert Trent Jones Jnr. course, 112 golfers played a four ball team scramble, which for most of the participating Thai golfers was a new experience. However, the objective on the course was to ensure ‘sanuk’ for the round and, armed with the scramble rules in Thai and English, the newcomers to the format quickly found their feet and reports after the round confirmed it was enjoyed by all.

The championship team from Thai Farmers Bank receive their trophy from former prime minister and current UNICEF ambassador to Thailand Anand Panyarachun (left).

After the 10 a.m. shotgun start signalled by HE Anand from the first tee, play began. Interestingly at Eastern Star Resort there is no gun, instead the very sensible facility of the ‘lightening warning’ siren is used.

After some slow beginnings, which at first indicated the possibility of a six hour round, the twenty seven teams got under way and all, bar two, were back in the clubhouse by 3 p.m.

There were hole-in-one prizes on each of the par threes, but sadly none were claimed from Club Car (#4), Royal Cliff Beach Resort (#8), Andaman Club (#12), and Benchmark Hospitality/United Airlines (#15). Technical prizes on offer included near pins, long drive, straight drives, and long putts.

Scores were good, and it was the low handicap teams that returned the best net scores of the day to claim the team trophies. The banking sector, through Thai Farmers Bank, topped the field to be the Anand-UNICEF Cup Champions, returning a net 55.1 off a team handicap of 5.9. Top retailers Tesco Lotus were runners-up with net 57.8 off 5.2. Close behind were AIA - New Hampshire Insurance, returning the same gross 63, but with a lower team handicap of 4.5 resulting in a net 58.5.

After the buffet reception, scenically situated outside the clubhouse to enable everyone to enjoy the sun setting over the course, the prize giving ceremony took place, emceed by tournament director Michael Franklin. After welcoming sponsors and distinguished guests, including Panas, deputy governor of Rayong Province and his team, proceedings commenced with the lucky draw, all players having received tickets in their starter pack at registration that morning. The team prizes followed the technical awards, which sadly did not include a hole-in-one achievement on this occasion.

The highlight of the ceremony was the presentation by HE Anand to the championship team from Thai Farmers Bank and, in addition to the team and individual trophies presented, there was the Khun Anand-UNICEF Cup which features the Anand Family Coat of Arms and will be the perpetual trophy for the event.

HE Anand is the Ambassador for UNICEF in Thailand and, in his closing address, he outlined the evolving strategy for fund raising and emphasized the importance of the private business sector. This, he said, had been so well demonstrated by the support from the leading Thai and international company sponsors that had supported the event, especially Cathay Pacific Airways and GE Capital (Platinum), and Thai Farmers Bank (Gold).

In fact, this was the first charity golf tournament to be run to benefit UNICEF projects to help the underprivileged children in Thailand. The grand sum of 1.2 million baht was raised, and a cheque for this amount presented to UNICEF’s representative in Thailand, Gamini Abeysekera.

HE Anand confirmed that the tournament would be staged as an annual event for UNICEF, and expressed the wish that this year’s sponsors would be back in 2002.

Gamini then spoke further about the work and aims of UNICEF and thanked the sponsors for making the inaugural event a success, for the sum raised of 1.2 million baht, and for ensuring the basis of a repeat tournament next year.

Rising Sun ends Pleasure Dome’s streak at 9

In what some may consider a mild upset, Rising Sun defeated Pleasure Dome in week 10 of the Friday Night Mickey Mouse Darts League, ending Pleasure Dome’s winning streak at nine.

The win vaulted Rising Sun up into a tie for second place with Yorkie, now just two games back of the Dome. Yorkie, meanwhile, lost to Palmer’s in another mild upset, but did finish the night by winning the beer leg.

Smugglers Rest are still on pace to run away with the wooden spoon after finishing week 10 having yet to win a match. Mick’s Place kept the Smugglers winless, but did give the benevolent Resters the beer.

In other week 10 action, Cheers won the match but lost the beer to Devonshire.

This week (Feb. 2) sees Cheers v Mick’s Place, Smugglers Rest v Pleasure Dome, Yorkie v Rising Sun, and Palmer’s v Devonshire.

Three Sisters clinches first place

Pattaya Sports Club Friday Bowling League

With one week remaining in the Pattaya Sports Club Friday Bowling League, the Three Sisters have clinched first place in the second league of 2000 by winning four points from VFW Post 9876.

Peter, the captain of Three Sisters led his team to victory with a 541 series. Good bowling by Rick, with games of 188, 186, and 195 for a 569 series, and Sven’s game of 201 was not good enough to win even one point for the VFW team.

Moving up to second place after winning four points was Lewiinski’s who defeated last place Snowman. Hartmut spearheaded the Lewiinski’s team with games of 162, 197, and 211 for a 570 series. Top bowler for Snowman was Dang, who only returned to bowling last week, and still put together a 533 series.

TQ 1 Bob, led by Captain Suda’s 539 series, managed to take three points from Cafe Ole and eliminated them from the trophy race. Tue with Cafe Ole bowled a 559 series, which included a 210 game.

Cafe Kronborg, who are still in the hunt for second or third place trophies, won three points from House of the Golden Coin. Neither team bowled very well and the best series for Kronborg was Captain Kran with a 510 series and Captain Mio from the Golden Coin with 520 pins downed.

This Friday stands to be an exciting finish to the league. Three Sisters winning first place only leaves second and third place team trophies up for grabs. Lewiinski’s, TQ 1 Bob and Cafe Kronborg will be fighting it out for second and third place.

Anyone for tennis?

Yes! That should be “everyone” for tennis, with the forthcoming first-ever Wilson/Coca Cola Royal Garden Spa and Fitness Club Pattaya Tennis Open. Running for four weeks from the 12th of February, culminating in the Grand Finals of all categories by the 11th of March, this is designed to be a fun event for amateur tennis players. People with the names of Agassi, Rafter, Hingis or Davenport need not apply.

The brainchild of Sean Panton, the Peter Burwash International Tennis Director at the Royal Garden Resort’s Spa and Fitness Club, this event caters for every group with men’s and ladies’ singles and doubles, mixed doubles, a veterans category, boys and girls (under 14 and 16 years) and even a boys and girls mini tennis for the under 10 year olds.

The entry fee for this tournament is a paltry 150 baht and even allows you to use the Spa and Fitness Club showers and facilities on that day. If you proceed through the tournament, the one entry fee covers the lot. Now that really is a bargain, and gets you some fun tennis in as well.

The finals weekend (10th & 11th March) also includes some tennis shows and tennis demonstrations as well as the finals in the different categories.

To enter, you will have to hurry, as entries have to be in by the 5th of February. Email Sean on [email protected]. It looks like a great month and a fabulous opportunity for Pattaya tennis players.

Inviting all teams for Pattaya 10s Tournament 2001

The Pattaya Panthers Rugby Club would like to extend an invitation to anyone who wishes to participate in the forthcoming Pattaya 10’s Tournament 2001. This will be the second tournament to be organized by the Panthers, the inaugural tournament last year was extremely well run and very successful. The Pattaya 10’s Tournament 2001 will take place at the International School of the Regents, Pattaya, on 14th and 15th April 2001.

The Panthers are hoping to make this tournament an annual event and are confident that it will become one of the most prestigious competitions in the region. This year there will be a Cup and a Plate competition and it is anticipated that there will also be a Ladies Touch Rugby Tournament.

All of the teams that participated last year have already confirmed their places in this year’s tournament and several new teams from overseas have confirmed their attendance. The Pattaya 10’s is a “club” tournament and the objective is a standard commensurate with “mature touring teams”. There will be heavy emphasis on off the field activities and the Panthers aim to create a competitive spirit in a festive atmosphere all in the camaraderie associated with the game of rugby.

The tournament will be a round robin format on the Saturday with each team expected to have three games to determine the seedings for the knock out stages to be played on Sunday. Each team will have at least one game on the Sunday and the tournament will conclude with the presentation of trophies and possibly the odd celebratory drink at a huge party organised by Shenanigans, one of the clubs principal sponsors and the home of rugby on the Eastern Seaboard.

This year’s tournament, which is scheduled for Easter to accommodate teams from Europe, will also coincide with the Thai Festival of Songkran (sometimes called Thai New Year). This is probably the most enjoyable of all Thai Festivals, being a playful water celebration and all visitors can expect a “Soaking”! There will be a host of events organised around this time, which will all be a bonus to the rugby.

The entry fee for the Pattaya 10’s Tournament 2001 will be US$200. If your team is interested in participating in this year’s tournament, additional information is available from the Panthers web site (www.pattaya-panthers.com). However, if you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact either David Garred, who is chairman of the Pattaya 10’s organising committee (address: Dusit Resort Sports Club Manager, 240/2 Beach Rd, Dusit Resort, Pattaya, Chonburi, Thailand, 20150, tel. (66 38) 425 611 - Ext. Fitness club, fax: (66 38) 428 239, email [email protected]) or Jim Howard, chairman of the Pattaya Panthers RFC (email [email protected]).

Len leads the way at Treasure Hils

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society with the Bunker

Tuesday, January 23 - Treasure Hills (Stableford)

On Tuesday, 23rd January, thirty-one golfers from the Bunker went to play the beautiful but testing Treasure Hills course near Chonburi. There were the usual two divisions according to handicaps, and Stableford was the format for the day. On a sweltering hot day, only two players finished on par or better.

In division two Len Jones broke par by scoring 39 Stableford points to win. It was a very fine round by Len on this long and difficult course. In second place came last week’s winner, John Preddy, with 35 points. The two Bunker comrades had an epic head-to-head battle all the way around, trying not to remember the previous week’s disasters at Pattaya, and it was not until the seventeenth hole that John wilted and Len pulled ahead.

In third place came the much improving David Johnson, with 34 points.

In division one, Japanese player, Yuzo Nishikawa scored thirty-six points to take first place. Over recent weeks Yuzo has played some steady golf and so his win was not altogether a surprise. Joint second place went to Mr. Loy Mitchell and George Meigh, both carding 34 points.

Nearest-the-pin awards went to Michael Dige, Norman Brooks, Jim Maloney and Mr Loy.

The Sandman, the Guru and the Friday Man take the honours

Friday, January 26 - Phoenix Country Club (Better Ball)

On Friday, 26th January, nine three-man teams travelled the short distance to Phoenix for a better ball tournament, with the best two scores in each group being recorded.

When the transport manager finally located his clubs, after a mix-up with the vehicles, the groups teed off on a very hot day indeed. The course was full and caddies were sparse and late arrivals had to make do with gardeners and mechanics! However, excellent scores were recorded, with George Meigh, John Harris and Jeff Rogers scoring an eighteen under par net 126 to come second behind the dream team of the Guru, Mick Jones, Gordon “Sandman” McKnight and the Friday Man, Kevin Wilson. They achieved an astonishing nineteen under par.

At the presentation in the Bunker there was a disagreement between the Guru and the Sandman as to who took the credit for the captaincy while the Friday Man quietly pocketed the first prize.

Nearest-the-pin awards went to Bill Hewitt, Hannu, the Pathfinder Chris John and the Guru.

Vic Cross wins weekly bragging rights

PSC Golf Three Sistes

The Three Sisters Golfers hit off the back tees, as their tee time at Siam was not booked as was requested. After heated discussions with the front desk and the starter, all golfers managed to get off the back tees in time to meet our normal schedule.

Robert Deane and Vic Cross managed to produce 38 Stableford points each, and on count back, Vic Cross was victorious. It was a hard fought battle as Jerry Lien tried to get into the action with 37 points. Close behind were Don Ratcliffe with 35 and Bill Thompson, Herb I., and Brian O’Gorman with 34 points. As it was, Vic with his steady play throughout won the day’s bragging rights.

Near or at the bottom were previous winners John Moore and Paul Kraft. The Golf Gods are not sleeping as they kept shifting the bunkers and trees around to get in the golfers’ way. It also seemed that Mother Earth had her say as the dirt and grass flew on many of the duffed shots.

As it stands, no one has been a repeat bragger yet since the Three Sisters Fun Golf started. (Who will it be?)

Billy Fain and Bob Moberg still have their running battle going. Bob still claims that Billy can’t count and Billy says otherwise. Who do we believe? I’ll leave it to the readers. At 32 points each, both Bob and Billy couldn’t have been closer on the match.

Hartley and Mckee best ball, Lills close behind with Ed & Mam Trailing

Paul Hartley and Sandy McKee blitzed the Eastern Star course to return a massive 51 Stableford points in the Shananigans Very Friendly Golf Society January Better Ball. Not surprisingly, Ken and Beth Lill were not far behind with 48 points, and regular winners Ed and Mam Trayling were hot on their heels with 46 points.

Scores generally were good, and this again emphasizes the popularity of this format.

Near pins were claimed by Beth and Mam, Mark Gorda and John Hanley. The long putts went to newcomers David Hughes and Reg Graves.

The weather was fine with a light breeze, somewhat offset by some slow student play up front.

Next outing is on February 6th for a Pairs Aggregate Stableford, which, if there is no conferring between players, will qualify for handicap review. Sign up for this early please, in pairs.

Ladies, don’t forget Tuesday February 27th is Shenanigans’ International Ladies Open at Eastern Star. Full details shortly in Pattaya Mail, on the web pages and in Shenanigans.
