Rosie hooks the big one!

Wins PSC Presidents Cup fishing tournament

Captain Jim Smith of the Rosie O Grady’s fishing team took top honors in the fourth annual PSC Presidents Cup invitational fishing tournament held on Saturday, December 16. Smith landed a 190-pound shovelnose ray to take home the Year 2000 PSC Presidents Cup Trophy.

(L to R) Andre Verdoodt, Frank Collins, Carl Engel and Paul Robertson show off their catch.

During the awards presentation ceremony at Rosie O’Grady’s Pub, Pattaya Sports Club president Peter Malhotra and fishing director Carl Engel presented the prestigious trophy to Rosie’s “Guv’nor” Bill. “The trophy is to get pride of place in the bar,” Bill said, and he also assured the PSC of his organization’s support for PSC charity events.

Twelve out of the sixteen qualified PSC fishermen participated in this year’s annual fishing event. Four teams on four separate boats left the Sattahip pier at 6 a.m. Saturday morning for a full day’s deep-sea fishing competition.

Paul Robertson holds up Captain Jim Smith’s 190-pound shovelnose ray, the Rosie O Grady’s winning entry in the 2000 PSC Presidents Cup fishing tournament.

The Rosie O Grady’s team, fishing on Captain Merk’s boat, consisted of Jim Smith and Tony Gooden, with Wayne Faulkner, Brian Fewtrell, Gordon “Flash” Sothern, and “Maltese Joe” on board as observers.

The Local Fish & Trips team, fishing on Captain Ting’s boat, consisted of Frank Collins, Carl Engel, Andre Verdoodt and Paul Robertson, with Rick Steed on as an observer.

The J & M Bar team, fishing on Captain Tong’s boat, consisted of Middy Campbell, Bryan Clayton, Jan Andersen, and Ray Milner.

In search of the big one.

The Bull Ring team, fishing on Captain Vichai’s boat, consisted of Brian Renouf and Jim Randall.

Along with Rosie O Grady’s winning entry mentioned above, other teams were successful as well. On the Fish & Trips team, Carl Engel landed a 13-pound cobia, an 8-pound pompano, and a 2-pound caravel; Andre Verdoodt had a 21-pound cobia, Frank Collins a 31-pound ray, and Paul Robertson a 9-pound pompano. For the Bull Ring team, Brian Renouf had an 8-pound pompano and Jim Randall a 6-pound cobia, for a grand total of 288 pounds of fish landed for the day’s tournament.

Rosie O Grady’s winning combination: Jim Smith and Tony Gooden display their 2000 PSC Presidents Cup.

The Bull Ring team lost a huge tiger shark as they tried to get the fish on board the boat. The estimated weight was well over 200 pounds. But, as it turned out, that was “the one that got away” (better luck next time Jim).

The fishing section of the Pattaya Sports Club sponsors the Presidents Cup Tournament each year. The tournament is by invitation only for any PSC member that has participated in at least three PSC organized tournaments during the year.

PSC president Peter Malhotra (left) hands the Presidents Cup to Bill from Rosie O’Gradys, where it will take pride of place, as PSC fishing chairman Carl Engel (right) offers his congratulations.

Pattaya is becoming a worldwide fishing destination. It is now common to have people come here from Europe, Asia and North America to enjoy the outstanding world-class fishing that Pattaya has to offer.

PH3 Run 876

Another great turn out for the Monday run, some 98 sign-ups in all. The long journey to the A-site on an overcrowded minibus seemed to be over in no time at all. Did it have a turbo charger? Or was the driver pissed? On arrival at the A-site hash heroine Fossil climbed on top of the bus to disconnect the high voltage power cable from the roof rack, great stuff, great A-site. The circle was called and three pairs of new shoes were christened, two cracks and F Nose. In came the hares Spag head and C Face to explain the run, usual format so on-on.

Great run passing through some good scenery including “The Field of Dreams”. Forty minutes later it was cool down and chinwag time. A menacing looking Charlie Manson was selling hash rags. Form a circle was called followed swiftly by the raffle performed by Dr. Pinky, who was looking remarkably well compared with last week’s swollen black eye.

Next the returner’s, too numerous to mention. Karamba and co on ice for talking louder than the Grand Master. Closely followed by Jazzer and his choir, no fires, no holy water, only two great songs “Come all ye hashers” and another - great stuff. Time next for the hare’s song “I’m dreaming of a ...” Next it was time for some religion with Chicken F, hares on in, they were not iced long because it was a good run and good song.

Chicken F then called in some cracks and their boyfriends for sitting in the circle. VV was iced for sitting on the trash bin. Obewan and Charlie Manson were introduced for being hash security.

Then the cigar smokers club were iced, Boy George, Big Chief Wombmaster, S Stayin’, Karamba and Fossil. Then we had three kamoy victims on ice, first one only 1200 baht, second one 5000 baht and a camera, the third had over 100,000 baht stolen from his room, all three had been drinking by the Marine Bar, and had their drinks spiked. Is there a message in the bottle? Swollen Woo Woo and Missing Personality were duly iced for sending their girlfriends money, which they banked, but had to perform lesbian shows for the extra cash. 1/4 Pounder with Cheese on in with his sister in law who was named Mother Superior. Then Chicken F iced the Anal family, Turd Burglar, UTB, Neville BF, KAM, Anal Breadfruit and T4, why me? Oh yes, the odd one or two people call me Brown Card Ken. The Brown Card Ken song was sung again much to the delight of all.

Chicken F then called in newly wed couple P Uphill and P Downhill, who were re-married by our own very unholy Jazzer. Next it was a very clean looking hash s@#t F Nose who was apparently “on strike”. I feel sure he will be wearing his hash s@#t gear next week for Sir Airhead. Dodgy Dave on in has a heckler, followed by the virgins. One visitor from Subic was iced to help keep his hemeroids cool. Charlie Manson on in as a double lying leaver along with Turd Burglar and VV. Then it was birthday time for T. (Mrs Spag Head) and Neville FF, followed by a story from Pinky about Neville in an Aussie newspaper, too long to repeat, but did he really turn up for a bicycle charity ride with no bike?

Finally, just to finish the last few down downs, Charlie, Uncle Fester, Boy George and our very own brewery boss Uncle Pervy. The hash hymn was sung with people flying off in all directions, back to the TQ for hot dogs, another great hash night.

Fitness Tips:  G’day readers and avery Happy New Year to all

by David Garred
Club Manager Dusit Resort Sports Club

The column this week is just some very simple, common sense advice.

New Year’s resolutions are due to be formulated and if you are reading the paper on Friday, as most of us do, you have only 2 days to get your act in gear to set some goals for next year.

Regardless of what goal(s) you are setting for yourself for the year 2001 and beyond, break the main goals down into easy to achieve ‘sub-goals’.

This will allow you to gradually work toward the big goal and feel good about achieving more simple things along the way.

You might just make it there quicker than you anticipated due to increased enthusiasm from getting the smaller things done and feeling good about it.

Set yourself up for success in the New Year, manageable goals that will help you on the road to the big one is the way to go.

Carpe’ Diem

Lewiinski’s half point away from match play championship

IPGC Match Play - The Haven v Lewiinski’s

It’s beginning to become a common refrain: “Lewiinski’s win again”. For, even though the scores of the monthly match play have been close, TAGGS from The Haven cannot seem to get over the hump and outright win a match against Lewiinski’s.

When the two friendly sides met again on December 20 at Phoenix Country Club, “Lewiinski’s won again”, this time 9 to 7. The win gives Lewiinski’s a 5 1/2 to 1/2 point lead, with the first team reaching 6 points winning the championship. When the two teams meet again at Siam Country Club on January 17, Lewiinski’s needs just to half the match to bring home the trophy.

This week the match couldn’t have been much closer. Out of 16 head to head matches, Lewiinski’s won 7, The Haven won 5, with 4 matches halved. Going into the final two matches of the day, The Haven was actually tied with Lewiinski’s at 7 points each, but Colin Davis (1 up) and Nigel Cannon (3 & 2) defeated Mark Gorda and Jens Gunnarsson to swing the match in favor of Lewiinski’s.

Embarrassed Eddie forced to accept bragging rights

Three Sisters Golf

Three Sisters Fun Golf gathered on Monday for their usual outing. Newcomers joining the group were Bob Moberg and Terry Patterson. Bob dusted off his clubs which were in hibernation for years and Terry, after working on his game for along time, decided to play again. As Bob tried to shake the rust off his game, Terry came roaring in with a respectable 36 points. Although 36 sounded good, two others went roaring past Terry, one with an incredible score.

After rechecking the scorecards, Bob Davis came in with 39 points off a 12 handicap (well done Bob - your handicap was dropped to 12 on the new sheets). It was pretty hard keeping track of all the Bobby’s and Billy’s that were playing - if Bill Thompson had played we could have evened it out with three Billy’s and three Bobby’s. As it was, two Billy’s and two Bobby’s shared carts - I wonder if they thought they were talking to themselves.

The bragging rights went to Fast Eddie. As it is, Eddie does not have an official USGA handicap. After turning in scorecards to establish his handicap, it was established that Fast Eddie would be given a local handicap of “50” since his scores were so bad. But in the past week, Eddie has gone down to the driving range, and had caddy “kook” instruct him on the golf course on how to hit the ball. The result was that Fast Eddie came in with an incredible 51 points after rechecking the scorecards.

The first card checked was Don Antonio’s, which showed a lower score. On checking the correct scorecard, it showed Eddie’s true colors. Eddie was so embarrassed that he did not want the bragging rights. He was told that he had to accept it but the score was immediately reported to Bill Thompson who will adjust his handicap accordingly (chop, chop, chop).

The usual stop was made and a few beers were consumed as the stories continued...
