Polish windsurfers win world titles in Jomtien

At an impressive closing ceremony at Pattaya Park on December 9, the Red Bull Formula Windsurfing World Championships came to a thrilling conclusion.

After a week of intense competition on the waters of Jomtien Beach, the new Windsurfing World Champions were crowned. It was a clean sweep for Poland as they won both the Men and the Women’s World Championship.

Wojtek Brzozowski and Dorota Staszewska receive their trophies before celebrating into the early hours at a beach party at the Pattaya Park.

For the men it was Wojtek Brzozowski and for the women it was Dorota Staszewska. “This is a great victory for Poland,” said Dorota. “I think we have surprised a lot of people. Now the world will have to take notice of Polish windsurfing. I am very proud.”

Over the seven days of racing there were 140 competitors from 36 countries. The Red Bull Formula Windsurfing World Championship was the most important event in windsurfing for a decade.

In related news, the Thai Windsurfing association held the 22nd Siam Cup at the same venue on Jomtien Beach, from December 1-5.

Wong Yu Hin from Hong Kong won the boys under 16 championship. Ake Boonsawat (Thailand) finished 2nd while Chaysit Sermsoy (Thailand) took 3rd place.

Seng Kwok Fai of Hong Kong won the men’s under 19 championship, while Levin Netta of Israel won the girls’ under 19 championship.

Nattaporn Thonserm of Thailand won the girls under 16 championship.

Panthers and Panties victorious in Khon Kaen

An intrepid party of Pattaya Panthers, Panties and the odd cub, made its way to the heartland of the North East for The Golden Triangle of Rugby tournament, hosted by Khon Kaen University. With both squads coming off recent decisive victories, against the Bangkok Japanese and the Corsettes respectively, fitness training was dropped in favour of a wheat beer workout on the eve of the tourney.

Panthers in recent action

The Panties were pitted against the Vientiane Buffalettes in two touch fixtures. In recent weeks the ladies have enjoyed outstanding success. An inaugural victory against the Southern Soul Sisters was followed by a great effort at the Bangkok 7s in defeating the other Thai teams before losing the final to a Singapore team, stacked with internationals. If the Corsettes had any doubts about Pattaya’s superiority - the Bangkok match ending early due to floodlight failure - the Panties quashed these with a 13-2 home trouncing, featuring hat tricks from strong running Sue Burke and elusive Leah Daniels. Thus the Panties went into the fixture against Vientiane confident to say the very least.

If bragging rights in Thailand had been secured however, that first ‘international’ victory was still missing. A first match surprise defeat to Vientiane, even after a scintillating run from quicksilver Sue Block, suggested the Panties had left their best form on the dance floor the previous evening!

As the afternoon cooled the team was rejuvenated, racing to a 2-0 lead after scores by Burkey and Barbie Pennock. Vientiane played their part, levelling by half time, but, inspired by Juan Win’s inches-short dive (of the half way line) the Panties prevailed 3-2 (Burke, again) and that first foreign scalp was claimed.

Inspired by the Ladies efforts the Panthers first tackled the swift and skilful students of Khon Kaen University. Deadlocked at half time, new signing Bruce de Gaulle (William Vannier) injected some gallic flair in flopping in for the first try. With the backs responding to the promptings of scrum-half Cosmo Bruce (Chris Kays) and Knobby Lek Bruce (Steve Turner), Baa scored a brace, before livewire flanker Wai, released by Bruce Band’s (Paul Crouch) fine pass, sidestepped six before touching down. Final score 24-0.

Panties finally gained their first “international” victory

The second game was a final of sorts, against Vientiane, also victors over the students and never-before-beaten by the Panthers. Long serving Basque, Pepe Le Bruce (Jean-Charles Lemaitre), captain in his last fixture, fanned the flames with a rousing pre-match rendition of ‘Barcelona’, and the Panthers roared to their first score, by the deposed Chaffinch (Balls gone Bruce, Adrian Sparrow), on the ensuing emotional wave. The Buffaloes traded scores, Boy Band Bruce breaking his duck, but the turning point was an embarrassing spilled ball by prop Bruce Forest (David Garred), in unfamiliar territory on the wing, when actually over the try-line. The wretched veteran turned personal adversity into team triumph, peeling off three consecutive scrums to plop in for a match-sealing hat trick, 33-12.

After indifferent losses to the Sri Lanka Army and at the 7s coach Jock McBruce (Victor Wilkie)’s team seem to have found some form and confidence for the New Year’s fixtures.

After an unfortunate but necessary disciplinary hearing for several players who had overstepped the acceptable boundaries of celebration, chairman Bruce (James Howard) ushered both teams home to Pattaya and Shenanigans.

Just a quick thank you to our sponsors, Shenanigans and Thainox for making tour Rugby possible for the Panthers.

PSC Charity Classic 2001

PSC Golf is pleased to announce that the 2001 PSC Charity Classic will be held on Friday January 19, 2001. A special committee has been selected and the first duty of selecting a worthy charity has been accomplished.

Following the success of the last Charity Classic where the beneficiary was the new Boys Home of the Redemptorist Street Kids Centre, Father Ray Brennan has agreed that the proceeds from the upcoming Classic can be allocated to the new Girls Home at the same Centre. This new home has not commenced as yet but is scheduled for early 2001.

The PSC Charity Classic is always a fun-packed day and has the unusual format whereby players can use mulligans on each hole to make up for those bad shots that slip into one’s game every now and then. This year every player will receive the “Full Monty” of 24 mulligans inclusive with the entry fee, which is fixed at bht 2,500 each.

Of course, there will be the usual excellent prizes for each hole together with an abundance of lucky draw prizes available at the prize giving afterwards. All you need is to keep your mulligan tickets which will serve as the lucky draw tickets as well.

Full details will be released shortly but be sure to enter this date in your diary as one not to missed.

Big day out for Izzy, Urai, John & Dennis

The Pattaya Sports Club’s monthly members’ golf tournament for December was held at the picturesque Khao Kheow Golf Resort. The format for the event was Stableford, and the large number of entries required a shotgun start to ensure that players were not required to wait several hours for presentations.

The course, as always, was presented in terrific condition and being played from the yellow tees was challenging. The decision to play from the yellows was welcomed by the young and strong, but there was the odd murmur of disapproval from the older brigade who has lost some distance over the years. All in all, though, it was a fair test of golf and the scores indicate that few found it easy, as only four golfers bettered par and two others shot to their handicap. Only 28 percent could muster 30 Stableford points or better.

This time of year always sees an invasion of golfers from the colder climates - among them a large representation from Scandiland, so look forward to seeing a number of them amongst the prizes in future events. At this particular event they took 65% of the novelty prizes, but only 16% of the flight prizes. It would be foolish, though, to suggest that they have more luck than skill, as time, I am sure, will prove.

PSC golf chairman Dennis Willett (right) thanks Jack Levy (left) for his sponsorship.

Among the winners, none played better than John (Tiger) Hurst. Tiger got off to a poor start, scratching two of the first four holes, but then found his range with all clubs and was devastating with the putter. After only 16 points on the B course, Tiger roared home with 25 points on the A course. An unlucky lip out on the last denied parring the A course. Say goodbye to your 16 handicap, John.

So elated was Tiger with his form and his caddie’s assistance on the greens that he even considered increasing his normal tip. Considered is the operative word though.

Matching the Tiger’s performance was the 41 points gathered by the C flight winner, Urai Kongnok. This delightful local lass often competes in PSC events and is improving quite rapidly. It is not her first trip to the podium and on present form it will not be her last.

Dennis Willett wins the A Flight

Urai’s effort relegated the very consistent Mam Trayling to second place, though her 36 points was fine golf considering her recent handicap cuts. Husband Ed is proceeding with plans to add a trophy room to their home to display Mam’s increasing array of trophies.

The win in D flight by Izzy Freedman was well received though he did it the hard way by edging out recent arrival Doreen O’Brien on count back, with both having registered 35 points. Izzy may have won the golf but he was beaten hands down in the looks department.

It seems Dennis Willett has finally gotten a handle on his new duties as chairman of golf. He was a good deal more relaxed this day than in recent weeks and this attitude was reflected on the course. His 39 points was a much-improved performance and good enough to take the A flight from Anders Pedersson on 38 points. Dennis and Izzy are both on the same diet that left Bill Collis looking like a mere shadow of himself. There must be something to this protein only diet. If this is the case, look for Paul Kraft and brother Larry in the winner’s circle before long.

Kenny Chung admitted to sending the most golf balls to a watery grave and received an appropriate prize for his misfortunes. Arthur Bailey, Ian Halfpenny, Jim Montgomery and Eddie Blackwell will no doubt remember why they played for seventh place. Thomas Bergwall played King Kong for the day and actually hit the fairway. He would like to thank the wannabes for their support.

The booby prizes for those finishing next to last in each flight were nearly a clean sweep for the visitors with Ericksson, Helgasson, and Schweiterman taking A, B, & C flights. The man who prevented the sweep was local Insurance guru and Dream Team member Jack Levy. The applause that followed Jack’s trip to the podium was warranted. Not so much for his golfing prowess, but for his contribution to the day’s success. Jack Levy represents Northern Thai Realty & Insurance who were major sponsors of the day. Without such generosity the PSC would be unable to supply members with such quality tournaments.

A very interesting part of the competition and something that perhaps has never been done before was Jack underwriting golf insurance packages to the near pin winner of each flight on the par 3 island green. Cecil Williams, Ken Ince, Lars Olofsson, and Peter Gullberg thanks you very much indeed as does the PSC.

Not only did Northern Thai sponsor a major part of the day, they have committed to support January’s Member’s Open to the same level. The PSC golf committee acknowledges that support and urges its members to support those who support us.

We would also like to thank Shenanigan’s, Rosie O’Grady’s, the Green Bottle, Cafe Kronborg, Ray Rogers, and Good Golf (in Duck Square) for their continued sponsorship.

Presentations were again held at the venue of the day with most competitors staying on for the awards. As always, a good number of lucky draw prizes were made available so that the less skilled have the opportunity to win something. These were eagerly accepted. Only the unlucky and the unskilled left empty handed.

Next month will be very busy so sign up early at the PSC office on Soi Diana (next to the Kronborg). The venue for January 11 is Natural Park Resort and the field may have to be limited, so watch for the sign-up sheets and get your name down early. Until next month, good golfing.

The Square Ring

by Howie Reed

With the chant of “Tito, Tito, Tito” reverberating around the almost filled Grand Events Center at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Felix “Tito” Trinidad basked in the glory of his knockout of Fernando Vargas. The end came suddenly with three quick left hook knockdowns in the 12th and final round. Vargas was left wheeling after the first two, out on his feet, as referee Jay Nady allowed Vargas one more chance. Nady finally stopped the fight at 1:33.

It won’t go down as the greatest fight in the history of boxing but there was no lack of excitement, action or drama. There are times when a great story line doesn’t develop into a great story. This time the characters played their parts. Mexico against Puerto Rico, experience against youth and two undefeated fighters. The was a commonality as both fighters were Latin, both had great hearts and both were warriors. In this case a good story line produced a good fight.

Just 93 seconds into the first round Trinidad scored a flash knockdown which was followed by another. With less than half the round gone the fight looked over. Vargas, showing more experience and heart than a 20-0 record might indicate, weathered the storm. The next two rounds were carbon copies of the first without the knockdowns. In the fourth Vargas caught a couple of breaks. He scored a knockdown and Trinidad got penalized a point for a low blow. At the end of four Vargas was still in the fight.

Vargas followed the knockdown 4th with a winning round in the 5th. He was able to beat Trinidad to the punch. He effectively used the “bob and weave” as a defense to stay away from Tito’s power. However, rounds 6-9 Vargas had no answer for Trinidad’s complete control. While not wining rounds by big margins Trinidad was able to out box Vargas and display enough power to win.

Vargas mounted a rally in the 10th but lost a point via a low blow. The 11th swung towards Vargas as he mounted an offensive, displaying the talent that had kept him undefeated.

It is said that the championships rounds are 10-12. “If you fight well there you win the fight.” For the many Mexican fans there was hope as Vargas looked to be coming on. It was a mirage. The hope was dashed early in the 12th when a left hook by Trinidad found its mark. For Vargas and his fans the end was near.

If the Mexican population of Southern California was disappointed, could the Thai fans be any less? Ratanapol “Dutch Boy Gym” Vorapin had been a great champion. IBF fighter of the Year. He was getting a chance at another boxing life against Ricardo Lopez. As it turned out not much of a chance.

Lopez dominated from the opening bell, landed at will with Vorapin seemly unable to answer. Lopez ended the fight at 2:11 of the 3rd round with a cascade of punches from all angles that all found a home. It was a premier performance by Lopez and a display of guts on the part of the out gunned Thai.

Husband and wife scoop the pool

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society from the Bunker

On Tuesday, December 5, the Bunker boys and girls celebrated the King’s Birthday at one of their favourite courses, Century Rayong. The format for the day was Stableford and thirty-three golfers set about their business under a cloudless sky.

Division two saw the Sandman himself, Gordon McKnight, share second place with the rapidly impressing Kerry Jonsson from Iceland, on 32 points. The winner was Viv Lill on 36 points. At the moment, Viv is showing fine form and has been rewarded with more than a few successes.

Division one saw “Houdini” Paul on 35 and Dave Johnson on 36, both eclipsed by in-form Ken Lill with a sparkling 39 points. Husband and wife both in good form obviously!

Nearest-the-pin awards went to Dave Johnson, Eero, “Houdini” and Stan Axom, mine host at Cheers Bar, who joined the Bunker boys for his first round in almost twelve years. Hope to see you next week, Stan.

Viv and Paul tame the Resort

On Friday, December 1, the Bunker group played at the beautifully prepared and appointed Natural Park Resort. This was a course some have suggested was too big a test for the Bunker, but the challenge was met in style by everyone.

In division one, Norman Brooks played his usual concentrated round to finish third with 34 points, only one point behind second placed Ken Lill. The division was won by “Houdini” Paul Butler with a course-beating 39 points.

In division two, Chris “Pathfinder” John scored 34 points to finish third behind Kerry Jonsson (37). The round of the day belonged to Viv Lill, however, who amassed a remarkable 26 points on the back nine to card a score of 41 points.

Nearest-the-pin awards went to “Houdini” (2), steady John Preddy and the Guru, Mick Jones.

Dennis Willett claims top prize of the day

PSC Golf at Rosie O’Gradys

On December 3 Rosie O’Gradys’ golfers played the inaugural golf outing at the beautiful Plutaluang Navy Golf Course in Sattahip (August photo in your new PSC Golf Calendar).

After a complimentary breakfast at Rosie’s, a spacious minivan carted everyone to the golf course in style. Playing the North and West nines, golf coordinator Adam Grimshaw showed the rest of the group how golf should be played. Except for chasing a wild monkey down the 16th fairway and an unfair number of three putts he should have been under par. That cross-handed putting grip obviously needs a little more work.

However, Dennis Willett had 38 Stableford points and claimed the top prize of the day. Scottish Steve finished second with 35 points.

While several of the golfers explored the trees and water, a good day of golf was had by all. The atmosphere was a little boistrous on the return trip, to say the least, and few people escaped with their reputations intact.

During the ensuing session back at Rosie’s, everyone agreed that this is a worthwile endeavor for the PSC and golf in Pattaya. Golfers can depart Wednesdays and Sundays at 10:00 a.m. from Rosie O’Gradys and still enjoy their free breakfast througout December. Contact Adam at 01-625-3183 or sign up at Rosie O’Gradys.

John Gibson Could not be denied bragging rights

Three Sisters Golf

On Monday the 4th of December, golfers from the Three Sisters met at Siam Country Club. Our golf chairman was generous enough to play with us despite his busy schedule (Thank you Mr. Dennis Willett). After playing with some of the golfers from the Three Sisters draw, Dennis may think twice about playing with us again. Dennis played with high handicappers Kenny Mau and Bob Deane, and must have learned some new swings that he never contemplated before. Both Dennis and Bob Deane came in with 35 points but could not catch up with the winners.

John Gibson won the bragging rights with 39 points and Bob Jess was close on his heels with a big 37. To do this, Bob Jess had to eagle the 11th at Siam from 200 yards with his 7 wood.

John did not falter as he hit the fairways and sank his putts. John figured that his score would have been at least 43 points if he wasn’t playing with Dene Mundy. He figured that Dene, with his jab for a putt, threw his putting off by at least 4 strokes. To confirm this, I talked to Jimmy Little and Vic Cross since they played with Dene the week before. “Lo and behold”, both Vic and Jimmy backed up John’s statement - could it be true that one person’s putt could do that much damage to someone else’s game?

Jimmy also confirmed that his voice almost got altered in last week’s tournament by a wayward ball. He developed a nice bruise just to prove his point. I don’t believe that his girlfriend believed him but that’s what golf is all about!

Bill Thompson came in third with a nice 36 but was not really in contention. Both Bill and Russell were thinking more of American Football than on their games to really give it a good go. Maybe when the American Football season is over they will be in a better frame of mind.

Dennis Willett told me that Kenny Mau was using all of the trees and bunkers that he could, but could not take advantage of them. We hope that Kenny will use as much of the course that is necessary, but he should leave some of the obstacles for some of the other golfers to show their skills.

As usual, golfers from the Three Sisters performed to the best of their abilities, but it really showed up better after they started drinking. Next week will be a bye week for the Three Sisters Golf as a Holiday will be in progress. Hopefully the week after will be free and we will all be back to see who will be the braggart for the week.

Wild Day at Bira

The final race meeting for 2000 took place at the Bira Circuit last weekend and was a dramatic finale for the year. The 1600 cc Class of the All Thailand Touring Cars was to be decided with only one point separating Hathai and Amarin (the singer, turned auto racer). With Amarin on grid slot 5 and Hathai on 6, all eyes were on the start, only to see Hathai jump out of his car and open the bonnet to attempt to fix a misfire.

Motorcyclist is Martin Bennett had a fun day at the track.

However, by the time the race eventually started, Hathai’s race was run and Amarin cruised home to take the title for the year.

In the 2 litre class, Natavud in the Toyota Team Thailand Corolla Altis had already taken the title, but 2nd was hotly disputed between the Team Toyota number 2, Pete (the actor turned auto racer) and Ekprawat in the Honda Civic.

At the start, it was Grant Supaphong (Honda Civic) who made the best of grid 3 and took the fight right up to the Corollas, where Natavud was riding shotgun for Pete out front. This race then took a very dramatic turn, with Grant getting through Natavud and then sliding under Pete in the first chicane, but spearing the Corolla into the tyre barrier. Pete got going again, keeping his chance at 2nd in the title alive, but completely blotted his copybook by becoming involved with Grant’s car which was by then on a slowing down lap, having been black-flagged. This left Natavud out front again, coming home strongly from Apatorn and Ekprawat, who had kept his nose clean and collected 2nd in the championship for the year.

The largest fields were put on by the two wheeled brigade, with Stuart Green’s motorcycle riding school having some great characters who had come to Thailand to learn and, for some, to have their first race. Amongst these were American Shawn Reilly, riding with a broken collarbone after a tumble during the week, two girls giving motorcycle racing a shot and a 51-year-old Englishman Martin Bennett, who just decided he wanted to have a go too.

The bikes put on a great show, with championship leader Matt Patterson consolidating his lead to become a very well deserved champion, but all the way through the ranks there were some great tussles and a very happy 51 year old Englishman, who finished with two other riders behind him! The goodwill at this motorcycle riding school does nothing but enhance the overseas impression of Pattaya, and the TAT should look at getting behind ventures like these.

Fitness Tips: General Tips

In the Blue

It seems blueberries are one of the best things you can eat in the interests of looking younger, and what is it that does the trick? The very thing that makes them blue. An antioxidant that works against the aging process, anthocyanin is also accountable for the blueberries’ unusual colour. A team of health research scientists in the United States is responsible for this discovery, working out of Massachusetts’ Medford University. So if you want to retain your youthful looks, start munching blueberries - they’re the new weapon in the fight against time.

Heavy Breathing

We all know how valuable Vitamin C is when it comes to warding off the flu, but its ability to increase your lung capacity is not nearly as well known. An American medical journal recently released a study that suggested that in some cases, a person’s lung capacity may be affected by how rich their diet is in Vitamin C.

It has been discovered that the vitamin has the ability to rid your body of the free radicals that sometimes prevent oxygen being pumped around your limbs.

Ripe Enough?

How often have you wandered into the fresh produce section of your local supermarket, with the task of buying a fresh pineapple in front of you only to discover that it’s really hard to tell if the fruit is ripe or not. This is mainly due to the fact that you can’t see its flesh and can’t squeeze its skin. Fear not, help is at hand. Pull out one of the green stalky leaves from the top. If it pulls out relatively easily and lets off a fresh pineapple smell, there’s a good chance that’s the pineapple you’re looking for.

Something Missing

New research has uncovered an interesting fact about bulimic people. While it is commonly known as a psychological illness, it is now believed that bulimics may suffer from very low levels of a very important amino acid. Tryptophan is the acid that is responsible for making the all-important serotonin - a substance found in the body which regulates moods. So it seems bulimia may also have a physiological background as well as a psychological one.

Powerful Bubbles

One of the main ingredients in both shampoo and toothpaste, a detergent, also serves to kill several serious viruses, namely the AIDS virus, one that causes herpes and another that has been linked to cervical cancer. While the detergent has been used for several years in laboratories to assist in the separation of viruses, it has now been recognised for its deadly capabilities. The active ingredient, sodium dodecyl sulphate is currently being tested and will hopefully be available for use as a treatment in the near future depending upon the usual final test protocols and approval process.

When is too little not enough?

While fat is not something you want to overdo when it comes to planning your diet, remember that you do have to have a certain amount to remain healthy. In a study released by the American Heart Association, it was shown that if a person’s fat intake drops below 15 percent of total calories consumed, the body’s fat content may increase.

Also, remember that many important vitamins are actually fat soluble and that means that without enough fat in your diet, your body can’t make good use of the vitamins you may be supplying it with. But this doesn’t mean you should start going mad when it comes to fatty foods! One of the best ways to instantly increase your ‘healthy’ fat intake is to up your intake of avocado and olive oil. Remember, the general proportions outline 50% carbohydrate, 30% protein and 20% fat in each and every meal; small portions and 4 meals a day. That will allow you to safely control your fat intake and regular exercise with these eating guidelines will ensure a safe, gradual improvement in general health and fitness while lowering excessive body fat levels.
