Health week at St. Andrews

If you ask any student at St. Andrews International School about living a healthy life you will surely find that they know a lot about this very important subject. St. Andrews recently held ‘Health Week’ and the students were involved in many interactive and fascinating activities, all centered on issue of health and lifestyle.

A bit of animal aerobics

During the week there was a poster contest, a healthy food cook-off, and deliciously healthy snacks in the school tuck shop. The winners of the cook-off were the Year 1 students who made open ‘face’ sandwiches which were not only loaded with healthy ingredients like tomatoes, cheese and vegetables but were wonderful to look at as well! Some other tempting entries were the flapjacks made by the Years 3 and 4 students, and the individual fruit salads made by the Years 5 and 6 students which looked more like art than food!

Highlights also included a visit from Bumrungrad Hospital’s mobile health unit which demonstrated their portable X-ray machine, as well as a visit by ‘Annie’ the life size teaching doll who demonstrated how she is used to train nurses and doctors in life saving procedures. We were also visited by dietitian Laura Zubrod, nurse-midwife Diane Connelly and physical therapist Anne Verhoven who all demonstrated their roles as health care professionals.

Um, tastes good and is good for you

The grand finale to the week was an energizing ‘Animal Aerobics’ assembly led by aerobics instructor Murial Moreau who did a great job getting everyone in shape in a fun and child friendly way. Ms. Moreau was assisted by the Year 7 and 8 students who, with placards, reminded everyone to drink water, served the water and treated the well acted ‘heated exhausted’ participants in the mock first aid station.

If you’re already thinking about your New Year resolutions, just ask any student at St. Andrews how to get back in shape after the holidays!

ISE entertain at ISR

Story and photo by Nic Salmon

The Concert Band of the International School of the Eastern Seaboard, led by conductor Paul Leggatt, played to a packed auditorium at the International School of the Regents recently when they performed a varied programme as part of the ISR’s lunchtime concert series.

In full swing! The Concert Band of the ISE, led by Mr Paul Leggatt.

The young musicians of the ISE enthusiastically tackled a repertoire of diverse pieces, some they had never performed in public before. The sight of so many faces in the audience must have been daunting, but any sign of nerves was not evident.

From the classical to the popular, items included a set of Christmas carols composed by Vaughan Williams, a medley of tunes from ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and a jazz piece from the film ‘The Great American Hero’. The performance was rounded off with the up-tempo ‘Watermelon Man’.

The popularity of music in our local schools was reflected, not only by the many musicians that comprised the ISE band, but also by the large number of youngsters who went along to hear them.

Garden International’s Christmas Fair

What did you do last Saturday? Well, out here in Ban Chang, the GIS Christmas Fair turned into an all-round fun day.

Students, teachers and parents gather at the GIS Christmas Fair

The December Fair is an event organised to raise funds for both GIS and different charities in the local area. GIS had an extraordinary assortment of fun activities from Santa’s Grotto (in which year 12 student Graeme Wilks did a sterling job as Santa), to our Beat the Keeper Competition run by the year 11 group with our star international goal keeper, Georgie Sitnikov in top from.

Several of our more sporting teachers endured a stint in The Stocks as ecstatic students hurled wet sponges at them. There were numerous stalls selling cakes, artwork, Christmas decorations, beautiful clothes and books. The pinnacle of the day, however, was the announcement of the never-ending raffle draw (50 prizes!). Much controversy, however, surrounded outcome of the raffle. The first prize (initially a return ticket to Hong Kong) was won by librarian Sue Wild. After much conferring between the raffle committee members, it was decided that, given the identity of the prizewinner, the ticket would be changed to “One-way”.

International School of the Regents roughs it!

The International Award is being undertaken by a group of senior ISR students as part of their extra-curricular activity programme.

ISR International Award students make the most of their supper...

The course consists of four sections, and participants have to satisfy the demands of each in order to gain the award: community service, skills, physical activity and expedition are the areas to be tackled, developing an awareness of community and environment, a healthy outlook on life, teamwork and organisational skills. The award encourages youngsters to try new things and does not demand excellence in their chosen activities; however, it does ask for perseverance in overcoming personal challenges.

The students involved certainly rose to the challenge during their recent camp, and proved that they were capable of looking after themselves using only basic equipment; the intrepid adventurers pulled together and tents were firmly pitched, fires successfully lit and food well prepared before the group turned in for a night devoid of home comforts.

At the end of the camp, as the fires reduced themselves to ashes, the spark of enthusiasm was still alive in the minds of all those who had taken part, and future expeditions were already being looked forward to.

MCCI celebrates Thanksgiving

Ms. Dominique and her little Pilgrim

On Friday November 25, the Kindergarten class of the Montessori Children’s Center International here in Pattaya celebrated the American holiday of Thanksgiving. The Kindergarten teacher, Ms. Dominique Thomas had the 4-6 year olds put on a skit about “The First Thanksgiving” which was celebrated by the Native American Indians and the Pilgrims around the year 1621. The children sang songs, danced and did a rap accompanied by clapping. The show ended with the whole school taking part in an Indian “Pow-Wow” where they all danced, chanted and munched on corn chips.
