St Andrews Schools lead the way in excellence

On the 29th, 30th and 31st of August, all of the teachers form the four St. Andrews International Schools met at the Rayong campus to participate in an “Effective Teachers-Effective Learners” seminar.

St Andrews teaching staff

The seminar, which was led by Paul de Vall, provided the teachers with an excellent opportunity to share their knowledge and expertise whilst also gaining an insight into some of the current issues related to education in Britain. Mr. de Vall is a Senior Primary adviser in the U.K. and a registered school inspector. He brought with him a wealth of knowledge regarding the current trends and practices in education and he assisted the teachers in implementing the effects of these into their own teaching practices.

The teachers examined and reviewed the contexts, which allow for optimal learning, and used these as a basis to evaluate their own practices. They investigated a framework for examining teaching and learning practices as a tool to enhance their own skills in self-evaluation and student evaluation.

Mr. de Vall was very impressed by the particularly high standard of teaching and learning that is taking place in the St Andrews International Schools in Thailand and his input has encouraged the teachers to strive towards an even higher level of excellence.

Dunked!

ISR students and staff had a terrific time at the Jesters Fair, both dunking and being dunked!

Kirsty Salmon - dunked by the Mayor of Pattaya!

Mrs Kirsty Salmon, Year 4 teacher, was the first person on the hot seat and had the ‘honour’ of being dunked - 3 times in succession - by special guest, Pairat Suttithamrongsawat, Mayor of Pattaya!

Many people tried their luck throughout the day, hoping to dunk teachers and fellow students. Some of the braver members of the Pattaya Panthers were also well and truly ‘cooled off’!

All those involved were delighted when a tally revealed that the stall had raised 4,480 baht for the ‘Care 4 Kids’ charity drive - what a tremendous result and one well worth getting wet (and a bit muddy!) for.

Dulwich to host international football tournament

This year the Third Phuket International Football Cup will welcome to the extensive campus of Dulwich International College 12 teams from all over Asia, making it the largest expatriate 11-a-side football event in Asia.

The tournament will be played on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th October, from 10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. both days. Entrance is free for spectators.

The tournament has expanded over the last two years, from 8 teams the first year, to 10 teams last year and now to 12 teams this year. The large number of participating teams will require matches to be played on two different pitches simultaneously; this has been made possible as a result of Dulwich International College creating a second beautiful pitch only few months ago for the inaugural FOBISSEA Games.

Participating teams from Bangkok and overseas at this year’s event are: the British Club Bangkok-Thailand, the French Technip Bangkok-Thailand, the Kaoshiung Pacers-Taiwan, the Lions Club-Singapore, the Lions Club-Taipei, Lainei Football Club-Taiwan, the Olympique de Saigon-Vietnam, the Scandinavians-Bangkok, and the Swiss Club-Singapore. Participating teams from Phuket are: Alice Media F.C. and Frank Mercenarie’s Phuket All Stars F.C.

Tournament format: There will be two groups of 6 teams each. Each team will therefore play the 5 others in its respective group on Saturday 28th October.

The two best teams from each group will then play the semi finals and final on Sunday 29th October, while other teams will play one classification match.

The first tournament, in 1998, was won by a local team: the Phuket All Stars. The second tournament, in 1999, was won by an overseas team: the Kaoshiung Pacers from Taiwan.

This year’s four favourites are: the Kaoshiung Pacers, the Lions Singapore, the Phuket All Stars and the French Technip.

Information about the tournament is available at: [email protected]

Information about the tournament venue and DIC are available from: [email protected] or at: http://www.dulwich-phuket.com

A Taste of India at GIS

As part of their subject matter this term, Year Three at Garden International School are investigating some of the cultures that add to the diversity of the Southeast Asian region. The topic chosen for this first part of the term has been India and Year Three were recently given the opportunity to explore this theme on a different level. Indian cookery was on the menu, and an enthusiastic Year 3 were ready to learn.

Mrs. Bhandari shows a Year Three student the fine art of creating Indian cuisine.

GIS invited Mrs. Bhandari, a parent, into the school to help the class learn more about the preparation and cooking of Indian food, and some of the history behind different dishes. Mrs. Bhandari kindly accepted our offer and spent the morning demonstrating how some of the more traditional Indian food was cooked.

The children each had a turn at making a chapatti - which is not as easy as it looks, and then Dhal. A grand vegetarian feast followed with class three excitedly devouring their morning’s work, and thanks to the culinary skill of Mrs. Bhandari, we now have fifteen converts to Indian cuisine.

The children were enthralled by the whole experience, which turned out to be a great opportunity to gain a different perspective on the work they are covering at the moment. Having been met with such enthusiasm by the pupils, the primary staff at GIS are hoping to promote this type of extra curricular activity on a regular basis. Did somebody say Gambian cuisine was next on the menu?
