SGP has good day fishing

Fishing in the PSC February Fishing Tournament, the SGP Bar & Caf้ had a wonderful day out fishing on Sunday February 6th. Frank Pickett landed a 47 pound Cobia. This is very large for a Cobia. The largest landed out of Pattaya is 62 pounds by Selwyn Leightly out of the Bull Ring Bar in 1994.

SGP’s Middy Campbell checked in with a 16 pound Cobia. Also a very nice fish. Included on the team was Bryan Clayton with four Barracuda. The SGP team was fishing out of Captain Dang’s boat, and the total amount checked in for the day was 75 pounds of good eating fish.

Frank Pickett of the SGP team landed a 47 pound (21 kg) Cobia.

Effective January 2000, the Pattaya Sports Club Fishing Section changed the monthly tournament format by featuring a month long competition starting the first day of each month lasting through the last day of each month. By registering in advance, fishermen will be able to choose the day in which they want to participate in the PSC promoted monthly tournament.

There are a few points to note. First, only teams having properly registered using an official form will be entered into the tournament. Forms must be submitted in advance. Forms will not be accepted after returning from fishing.

Secondly, the tournaments have now been extended to a full 24-hour period of time. Previously the tournaments were limited to a fixed weigh-in time. The fishermen can now choose the time of day and the location in which they prefer to fish. Weigh-ins will be flexible, but must be witnessed and by a PSC Fishing Committee Member at a specific time and location to validate the weigh-in.

All other rules will remain intact from the 1999 season. Updated results for each of the tournaments during the month will be posted at the Local Fish & Trips Bar on Soi Yodsak. This board will track the current monthly tournament standings, including the special categories positions. The PSC fishing section approves the same game fish as the IGFA rules.

Forms will be made available by fax or e-mail, or can be picked up, or register in person at the “Local Fish & Trips Bar”, The “SGP Bar & Caf้”, and the “Tropical Fish” shop, all located on Soi Yodsak next to Soi 6 in North Pattaya.

For further information please contact Carl Engel PSC Fishing Chairman at telephone 038-410-228, fax 038-426-121, or e-mail <[email protected]>

Khun Verasit, Alex Skaria and Sam Phanpho Triumph at Varuna

by Richard van den Heuvel

This year’s Winter Series at the Royal Varuna Yacht Club saw a good turn out of Lasers, Catamarans and Optimists. The Series consisted of 10 races, sailed over three weekends.

The wind blew steadily from the north most of the time, giving Varuna’s sailors of all ages good, competitive sailing conditions. The little ones in their Optimists sailed undisturbed in between their bigger sister boats.

Each day there were two races back-to-back and with the separate starts only seven minutes apart there was plenty of mingling on the course, calling for some skillful manoeuvering, especially around the buoys.

With only the best seven races to count, Khun Verasit took the crown in the Laser class, followed by Morten Jakobsen and Marco Miagostovitch.

In the Catamaran class, this being a mixture of Hobie 16s and all sorts of Nacras, Alex Skaria triumphed, closely followed by Alberto Cassio, both in a Nacra 16 sq. In third place was Simon Prattley on a Hobie 16.

Of the 12 children who competed in their Optimists, Sam Phanpho was the clear winner, followed by Virginie Lacrosse and Will Hamilton.

Examples of internal Chi Gong

by Patrick Stahl,
NRG Center

The preparation of practicing Chi Gong is of great importance in order to get the most out of it. One should not be influenced or disturbed by the environment. The mind should be clear of thoughts. In any position, sitting or lying, the clothes should be loose so that respiration and blood circulation are free from restraint. The posture should be natural, without squaring the shoulders or pulling in the abdomen.

It is of utmost importance to learn how to relax. Drink some water, then empty the bowels and bladder, take off the wristwatch and glasses, loosen the clothes and the belt and try to relax the whole body, including the head, trunk and limbs. Begin with an easy mind. Select a comfortable and natural posture. The form selected is not important.

Recite a short sentence in your mind, the best is to start with a sentence of three words or a few syllables and gradually increase the number. Though there is no fixed pattern, those commonly used are: “I am still”, “I am lying (sitting) still”, “I am lying (sitting) very still”, and so on. Recitation should be coordinated with respiration. There are two methods: 1. Inhale with the first word and exhale with the last; hold the breath in-between. 2. Recite the whole sentence in the pause between inhalation and exhalation. Either way, the more words in a sentence, the longer the pause in respiration.

Abdominal breathing is practiced. Again, there are two methods: 1. Inhale and exhale through the nose. (Lift the tongue to touch the palate while inhaling and lower it while exhaling. Inhalation should be natural without exertion, and the mind should be concentrated on the elixir field. 2. Inhale through the nose, using the mind to guide the air to the lower abdomen. Exhale naturally through the mouth, followed by a pause for the sentence, during which time the tongue is touching the palate. After reciting the sentence, lower the tongue and inhale again. The concentration of the mind is very substantial. The mind should be concentrated on the lower elixir field, free from all distractions. After repeated practice, a ‘tranquil’ state will be reached.

Next time, I will give you a short explanation into the history of Chi Gong.

PSC TAGGS... golf from the Hare House

Wednesday, February 9 - Khao Kheow Country Club (Better Ball)

1st: Mark Campbell & Glen Dragland, 62 net (B/9 27)
2nd: Paul Azzopardi & Craig Tierney, 62 net (B/9 31)
3rd: Mark Campbell & Stephen Beard, 62 net (B/9 31)
4th: Michael Dige & Peder Gjelstrub, 62 net (B/9 32)

The golf gods are a capricious lot. They give; they take away; they tease and they torture. Just ask Mark Campbell. On Wednesday, February 9, he was the “odd man out” in a Better Ball contest at Khao Kheow. There were thirty-one entrants and rather than have a designated “one ball”, Mark played in a threesome and was shared by two teams.

Anyone who had seen Mark struggle greatly at Green Valley the week before might have been curious as to how he would respond to playing on two teams simultaneously. He responded very well.

Paired up with Lassie Dragland, Mark and his partner won the Better Ball in a four-way count back with a net 62. His other partner was Stephen Beard, and with this teammate he took third place, also with a 62. The year 2000 has already seen a handful of historic firsts in the golf results out of the Hare House, and we add Mark Campbell’s double appearance on the podium to that list.

Sandwiched between Mark Campbell et al. were Paul Azzopardi and Craig Tierney. They were joined in the prize giving my Michael Dige and Peder Gjelstrub.

Four teams coming in with net 62 at Khao Kheow off the yellows is quite an achievement. But these teams should have been battling for second place and would have been had it not been for the aforementioned capriciousness of the golf gods. Norman Brooks and Bruce Lawrence had a net 63 with thirteen pars between them with no overlap. They were cruising until they hit #8 on the ‘A’ course. That’s the par 5 over the creek at the bottom of the hill. They both took quadruple bogey nines and suffered the exquisite torture that golf inflicts on all those who deign to play the game. There are very few jerks on the golf courses. Their egos can’t handle it.

Friday, February 11 - Phoenix Golf and Country Club (Stableford)

1st: Stephen Beard, 43 points
2nd: Hannu Kemila, 36 points
3rd: Rick Schramm, 36 points

While many of the fairways on area golf courses are withering away, Phoenix is looking green and lush. With very little wind on Friday, February 11, the gentlemen from the Hare House had a great opportunity for low scores. Only one golfer was able to take advantage of the good conditions, but brother did he ever take advantage.

TAGGS Chairman Stephen Beard pulled in a whopping 43 points and won the Stableford event by seven points. Stephen was so impressed with Phoenix that he confirmed that the TAGGS AM-AM will be held on the Mountain and Ocean courses on Wednesday, the first of March.

Taking second place in a count back with 36 points was Hannu Kemila. Hannu beat out Rick Schramm with seventeen points on the back nine to Rick’s sixteen.

Remy takes Match Play Championship

PSC Pattaya Golf Society from the Bunker

On February 8th the Bunker boys went to Green Valley, which was in beautiful condition. The match play competition was completed when Remy finally defeated Keith Fortt 3 and 2 on the 34th hole of their match.

It was a pleasure to witness the sportsmanship of the two players in such a tense situation. It was rumored that Remy’s brother Chres had flown in especially from Belgium for the match, but he has now decided to stay for 2 months after sampling Pattaya’s nightlife.

The rest of the fields played Stableford with Division I winner Bruce Lawrence carding 37 points, followed by Paul “Houdini” Butler and Swiss Peter Renggli. Division 2 winner was Tommy “5 Club” Jeeves on 37 points, followed by Remy and Gordon McKnight.

The presentation back at the Bunker was followed with “5 Club” Tommy giving lessons, watched over very carefully by our own golfing clinic guru Mighty Mick Jones.
