Eddie answers his critics!

Eddie Irvine, now assuming the mantle of Ferrari number 1 following Michael Schumacher’s accident at Silverstone, stunned the racing world by pounding the seemingly unbeatable Mercedes-McLarens at the A1 Ring in Austria last weekend.

After Qualifying, reigning world champion Mika Hakkinen was on pole, with team mate David Coulthard just astern. Irvine was over one second away and no-one was prepared to put any money on him.

With Coulthard giving Hakkinen a helping hand into the shrubbery on turn 2, the race took on a different dimension. Hakkinen slashing through the field from the rear, while Coulthard flogged away out front. However, what the McLaren boys from Woking in the UK were unaware of, was the excellent strategy of the Ferrari team. They kept Irvine out for as long as possible, while Eddie was responding to calls from the pits for fuel efficient driving.

With slicker pit work than the McLarens, Ferrari had Irvine in and out of the pits two seconds quicker. Enough to establish Irvine in the lead.

Despite Irvine’s brakes that were fading in the later stages, Coulthard could not catch the Irishman, who won by 0.3 seconds, the narrowest of margins for some time. Hakkinen followed them home for 3rd.

The World Championship points now stands at Hakkinen 44 points, Irvine 42, Schumacher M 32, Frentzen 29, Coulthard 28.

With the next round being this weekend at Hockenheim in Germany, the Mercedes-McLaren team will be wondering just what they have to do to get away from "Fast Eddie".

National Wind Surfing Club elects new president

The National Wind Surfing Club unanimously elected Admiral Narong Yuttawong, Commander of the Royal Thai Navy Fleet, as the club’s new president.

Outgoing president, Admiral U-Larn Mongkonnawin, had completed his two-year term and wished to step down.

The election took place at the club’s meeting in early July at the Villa Nawin Club in Jomtien Beach. Board members and 50 club members were in attendance.

At the meeting, the club’s 1998 record was also reviewed. Athletes from the club participated in six events in foreign countries, with almost all of them taking front positions in each event. During the 1998 Singapore Open the Thai National Team took second, third and fourth places. The 1998 Tudor Cup, also in Singapore, two of the club athletes, Arunhomrarin and Phanuthad Ruamsap, took first and second places.

Still time to sign up for Las Vegas Open ’99

There’s still plenty of time to sign up for the 1999 Las Vegas Open, always one of the favorite dates on the local golfing calendar.

This year, the 3rd Annual Las Vegas Open will take place at Phoenix Country Club on Friday, August 6th with tee offs beginning at 9:00 a.m. Tee times will be posted in Las Vegas the evening before the event.

Entry fee is 1200 baht, which includes green and caddie fees, commemorative golf shirt, BBQ at Las Vegas after the tournament, and all trophies, prizes and sweep.

Once again, a ton of technical (and other) prizes and trophies will be up for grabs in three separate handicap divisions.

One thing is for sure; come August 6th, a large field will gather for one of the "most fun" events on Pattaya’s golfing calendar.

Last year over 80 golfers teed it up, vying for the 24 technical and an unknown number of "other" prizes. This year is expected to be every bit as fun.

Sign-ups are now being taken at Las Vegas on Soi Post Office, PSC Golf venues throughout town, and with Richard. Sign up now to ensure your spot in the 1999 Las Vegas Open. Further details at Las Vegas, Soi Post Office.

PSC TAGGS... golf from the Hare House

Wednesday, July 21 - Natural Park Resort (Bogey)

1st: Brian Kelly, All Square
2nd: George Jackson, All Square
3rd: Terry Summers, All Square

The Aussies were AWOL. The Canadians had gone back to work. All the Scandies with any sense were in their home countries enjoying the summer and the Americans were desperately looking for their game. That left the English and they swept the field in the TAGGS Bogey competition at Natural Park Resort on Wednesday, July 21.

Brian Kelly, George Jackson and Terry Summers finished their matches against the course "All Square". On a day when there were "No Carts Allowed" due to the heavy rain the night before, the beautifully conditioned Natural Park Resort wasn’t giving a foot of roll on the fairways. The 6450 yard ‘B’ and ‘C’ layout was playing a lot longer than the yardage book, and these three gentlemen proved that the English game is "Bogey", not Cricket.

Brian Kelly took home the TAGGS Knotted Putter on a count back that incredibly went to the last three holes.

Friday, July 23 - Phoenix Golf and Country Club (Stableford)

1st: Garry Parkinson, 40 points
2nd: Juan Kendall, 39 points
3rd: Dan MacLean, 39 points

The Hare House Gang made the short trip to Phoenix on Friday, July 23, to play their weekly Stableford competition. The rain came in spurts, but the wind howled all day, making conditions tough for the twenty golfers who teed it up.

Atop the international leader board was Australian Garry Parkinson who won his second Stableford competition in a row as he shot a gross 75, off a seven handicap, for 40 points. Garry hits a 3 wood off the tees that launches his shots like a seven degree driver. His shot trajectory is so low that he never uses a wood in the fairway. When you can hit a three iron as long as Garry, you don’t need the woods. On the front nine Mountains Course, Garry had eight pars and one birdie for a gross 35, and a twenty three point start in the competition. He waltzed home on the back nine Oceans Course with 17 points and a one point victory.

In second place from Costa Rica was Juan "You let me sing you a song" Kendall. Seńor Kendall plays off 28 and when he wasn’t driving Vic Cross to distraction with his warbling, he was playing pretty good golf. Juan had 23 points on the back nine to cap his 39 point total and take the second spot on the podium from big Dan MacLean who also had 39 points.

There were seven prizes given out in the competition to golfers from six different countries. Back on Soi Post Office, after the day’s golf, a mini UN toasted the winner and near winners, complained about missed putts, and secretly vowed that next week would be their turn on the podium. Newcomers are welcome.
