Allidi tames the Mountain

PSC golf from The Growling Swan

Max Bracegirdle, Les Moloney & Mike Allidi.

Peter Blackburn
Monday, Sept. 30, Treasure Hill – Stableford
After very heavy overnight rain we were presented with a fine Pattaya Monday morning as we made our way to The Growling Swan in readiness for the journey to the challenging Treasure Hill Golf Course.
The original field of 23 was reduced to 20 after three late withdrawals due to sickness which included your writer who is still battling with a sciatic nerve issue. Nonetheless, we were happy to welcome back Dick Braimbridge from Queensland, Australia, Ken Hole from a few weeks in the UK and good friend Volker Buley from Germany. There were also newcomers Andy Todd & Paul King from Perth in Western Australia, Peter Burke from Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia and David Marshall from Brisbane. Also, apologies to Graham “Grunter” Buckingham for not saying farewell to him prior to his visit back to the UK.
I saw the 2 mini vans off at 8.27 am from the GS and they arrived at the course 55 minutes later where things were very quiet. After a brief preparation the first group, a three-ball, got away 15 minutes earlier than the scheduled 10.00 am start time and it was reported that the course was in quite good condition and recovering well from the recent work although some found the greens somewhat slower than they are used to.

Jerry Dobbs, Volker Buley & Andy Todd.

It was a fairly quick round of golf with fine weather and unlike Pattaya, no rain, with the first group back in the clubhouse four hours & five minutes after they started. After the negative recent reports regarding Treasure Hill it was reported that it is now very acceptable with minimum inconveniences.
We had 2 Grades - A Grade for handicaps 0 to 19 and B Grade for handicaps 20 and over with 4 places in each grade. There were also rewards for nearest the pins on the four par threes and longest first putts on the 9th & 18th greens.
First timer Andy Todd (20 point back nine) was the winner of the A Grade section, winning on a count back from Gerd Riedler (18 point back nine) with both of them scoring 36 points. Another count back was required with 4 golfers on 34 points to decide third & fourth places and it saw Kissy Buchanan (19 point back nine) finish third from John Pierrel (16 point back nine & 11 points on the last 6 holes) in fourth spot. The unlucky ones were Kevin “Wayco” Waycott (16 point back nine & 8 points on the last 6 holes) and Martin “Toddy” Todd (14 point back nine).
Jerry “Dobbsy” Dobbs was victorious in the B Grade with a steady 36 points and John Davis came second with 34 points. In third place came Patrick Poussier on 28 points and Dave Marshall was fourth with 26 points.
A Flight (0-19)
1st Andy Todd (12) 36pts
2nd Gerd Riedler (6) 36pts
3rd Kissy Buchanan (16) 34pts
4th John Pierrel (10) 34pts
B Flight (20+)
1st Jerry Dobbs (22) 36pts
2nd John Davis (22) 34pts
3rd Patrick Poussier (22) 28pts
4th Dave Marshall (20) 26pts
Near Pins: 2nd – Kevin Waycott, 6th – Ebrahim, 13th – Patrick Poussier, 17th – John Pierrel
Long Putts: 9th – Martin Todd, 18th – Mike Gosden
The Growling Swan NAGA Award (awarded to the golfer who has the worst score on the day) was won by Volker Buley and he accepted the award in very good spirit. Toddy then kindly paraded Deefa the Dog and of course collected many donations for the needy in Pattaya from our generous Growling Swan golfers.
Thursday, Oct. 3, Mountain Shadow – Stableford
We were originally booked to play at Crystal Bay but their staff were good enough to inform me the day before that the course was extremely wet and carts would not be allowed anywhere on the golf course. They offered us Mountain Shadow as an alternative as they have cart paths there so their offer was accepted.
We gathered at The Growling Swan as the sun shone and our final number was 27 as your writer decided to delay his return for a further 4 days. We welcomed first timers Adam, Gary & Ben from the UK and sadly said Bon Voyage to Jerry Dobbs, returning to work in Australia, Volker Buley who was off back to Germany after his brief stay and David Marshall who was returning to Queensland, Australia.
I farewelled the 3 mini vans 5 minutes ahead of schedule at 8.25 am and it was reported that their journey was the usual 45 minutes and the golf course was reasonably quiet although the weather was fine. Unfortunately I had omitted to inform Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei, who was driving to the course that there had been a change of venue so he rang me from Crystal Bay in despair but I simply re-directed him up the road. He was in Group 1 but that was OK as Toddy allowed a couple of groups to slip in front of our first which got away 5 minutes later than scheduled at 10.05 am.
Apparently the golf course was in very good condition considering the amount of recent rain and the round of golf was completed in four hours & fifteen minutes, although about four holes were played in steady rain.
We had 2 Grades - A Grade for handicaps 0 to 17 and B Grade for handicaps 18 & over with 5 places in each grade. There were also rewards for nearest the pins on the four par threes and longest first putts on the 9th & 18th greens.
The wet conditions did not appear to worry A Grade winner Mike Allidi who carded a 70 off the stick for his 41 points and another fine round from Kevin “Wayco” Waycott secured second place with 40 points. Takeshi Hakozaki finished third with 36 points and Gerd Riedler was fourth with 35 points. With 3 golfers having 34 points a count back was required to determine fifth spot which went to Ebrahim (19 point back nine) and Sal Brizzi (17 point back nine) & Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei (17 point back nine) just missed out.
Max “Corsets” Bracegirdle easily won the B Grade section with a fine 39 points which was 5 points better than second place-getter John Davis and Jerry “Dobbsy” Dobbs was third with 28 points. In fourth place came Stephen Newton and Gary Monley was fifth with 26 points.
A Flight (0-17)
1st Mike Allidi (3) 41pts
2nd Kevin Waycott (10) 40pts
3rd Takeshi Hakozaki (11) 36pts
4th Gerd Riedler (6) 35pts
5th Ebrahim (17) 34pts
B Flight (18+)
1st Max Bracegirdle (25) 39pts
2nd John Davis (22) 34pts
3rd Jerry Dobbs (22) 28pts
4th Stephen Newton (26) 27pts
5th Gary Monley (36) 26pts
Near Pins: 5th – Mike Allidi, 8th – Gerd Riedler, 15th – Martin Todd, 17th Ebrahim
Long Putts: 9thy - Brad Todd, 18th – Mike Allidi
The Growling Swan NAGA Award was won by Les Moloney, Muncha’s Dad and he accepted the award in good spirit. Max then kindly paraded Deefa the Dog and collected donations for the needy from our generous Growling Swan golfers.
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any persuasion – low & high handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. Culley continues hot form

PSC golf from The Caddyshack

Rick Culley (H/cap 13) continued his domination of the group with 2 wins this week under difficult conditions. His first win was at Eastern Star on Monday 30th where his 34 points led home from Ian Chipman (great name for a golfer) with 31 points and Ramsay Smith with 29 points. His second victory came at Bangpakong on Wednesday 2nd when his 39 points was better than Don Hackey (20) with 38 and Gary Ritchie (6) with 35.
On Friday 4th Oct. we teed off at Green Valley in a very light rain. It was obvious after a few holes that the course should not be open but we soldiered on between light and heavier rain. We finished in a complete downpour with Mike Phillips (10) edging Phonsie McGahan (6) on count back with 36 points each.
Note: The Caddyshack is located on Soi 17 off 3rd Road or soi 8 off Thepprasit. All golfers are welcome and reservations are taken at 081 865 3104

Freddy Starbeck golfer of the month

PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society

Freddy Starbeck (left) with Jim, Jum, Dave and son.

Sunday, Sept. 29, Green Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Dave Driscoll (15) 40pts
2nd Freddy Starbeck (13) 39pts
3rd Barry Copestake (12) 38pts
B Flight
1st Jum Karagit (18) 40pts
2nd Eddy Beilby (19) 37pts
3rd Colin Davis (17) 36pts
Near Pins: No 4 Claude Harder, No 9 Dave Driscoll, No 12 Kevin Ed Wyckoff, No 16 Bob Newell.
The boys and girls gave notice that it could be a week of big scores right off the bat as the day’s honours were shared by A Flight’s big hitting Dave Driscoll and B Flight’s Lewiinski’s belle Jum Karagit. Dave’s 40 points, which included a near pin and a ‘2’, edged the fine effort of Freddy Starbeck by a stroke. Freddy in turn edged Barry ‘the boot ‘Copestake by the same digit.
In B Flight, Jum was three clear of Eddy ‘the Eagle’ Beilby while The Donkey cantered into the bronze spot with a even par round.
The prestigious golfer of the month award went to the flamboyant Freddy Starbeck.
JP Maffray, Jim Bell, Ed Wyckoff and Jum Karagit shared the 2’s pot with Dave.
Tuesday, Oct. 1, Greenwood A & C - Stableford
1st Eddy Beilby (19) 40pts
2nd Colin Sansom (11) 39pts
A relatively modest group, attributed to the season and the inclement weather of late, took on the Wooldridge and Thompson designed Greenwood.
Eddy the Eagle Beilby had a sparkling round of 40 points that gave him the man of the match honours and this was also his second pay window trip in as many games. A count back decided the silver spot and dictated the order of ascent which favored Colin Sansom’s 39 points to that of Ireland’s Terry ‘pork chop’ Mangan.
Peter Henshaw lifted the 2’s pot.
Wednesday,
Oct. 2, Pattana - Stableford
A Flight
1st Freddy Starbeck (13) 39pts
2nd Jean LaRouche (15) 38pts
3rd Les Cobban (10) 37pts
B Flight
1st Peter Henshaw (17) 35pts
2nd Jimmy Day (17) 34pts
3rd Colin Davis (17) 32pts
I’m not even going to mention it this time, but the clean-up guy struck again. Freddy Starbeck drew the short straw and then left nothing to chance as he shot a best of the day 39 points. Three golfers who had every reason to be optimistic of their chances in A Flight were Jean LaRouche on 38 points, and Les Cobban and Colin Sansom both a shot back. Unfortunately there were only three podium spots and Colin was on the wrong end of the count back so received nothing for all his hard work.
The action in B Flight was only reasonably sublime as all the flight places were filled with players who did not better their handicaps. The Irish pair did the best with Peter ‘the silver surfer’ Henshaw and good pal Jimmy ‘good’ Day returning 35 and 34 point cards in that order. The ‘Hee Haw’ man slid onto the podium with a very modest but just as spendable 32 points (he did however point out that the one hour delay due to the heavy rain was the main reason for his low total)
Nick Lewthaite, Colin Davis and JP Maffray shared the 2’s pot.
Friday, Oct. 4,
Mountain Shadow - Stableford
A Flight
1st Pierre Bietry (16) 35pts
2nd Thierry Petrement (13) 33pts
B Flight
1st Jim Elphick (27) 39pts
2nd Eddy Beilby (19) 38pts
Wily Jimmy ‘two shots’ Elphick and Eddy ‘the Eagle’ Beilby were the only two players to solve the Mountain Shadow riddle on this day as both bettered their handicaps. Jim was man of the match with a fine 39 points as Eddy closed B Flight a shot adrift.
The flagship flight was a bit at half mast as Pierre Bietry was top man on 35 points. Thierry Petrement, returning to the society from wherever he goes, made a quick visit to the pay window as he closed the flight with 33 points.
Ed Wyckoff, Freddy Starbeck and Gerry Roche divvied up the 2’ pot.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya land Soi 1, Beach Rd Soi13/13 near Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

Owen on fire at Emerald

PSC Golf from Siam Country Resort

Thursday’s top two – Joop and Neil.

Tuesday, Oct. 1, The Emerald - Stableford
Tuesday’s result was always just a matter where and when, not if, as Owen Walkley (H/cap 15) found his swing again after going through the golfing doldrums of late, with his handicap reflecting his loss of form. The previous week, after his 36 points at Treasure Hill when everyone else struggled, the writing was on the wall, and today he blitzed the field with 44 points at Emerald.
The course was in good condition, with recent renovations nearly healed, and the greens running nicely. Jeff Wylie (5) just edged Jonathan Pratt (11) on count back 21/16 for the runner-up spot after both signed for 37 points.
Near pins went to Jonatham, Joop, Owen & Jeff.
Thursday, Oct. 3, Pattana – Stableford
A small field turned out for Pattana, as we played the A & B combo. The course was a bit on the damp side and we copped a good downpour which lasted for 3 holes or so on the back 9. The 2 groups persevered through the rain, as there was no lightning and the greens were still playable. It has become more the norm for groups to take to the shelters at the first hint of rain, as did several other groups on this day at Pattana.
The rain certainly affected the scores, and not in a good way, as Joop (32) led the way home with 28 points, while Neil Harvey (19) just edged Jeff for 2nd on count back 14/10.
Near pins were claimed by Willem & Jeff.
Note: Siam Country Resort, Restaurant & Bar is located just off Siam Country Club Rd, after going under the arch past the 7/11, turn right after 50 metres, with the venue on the left another 200 metres along. Golf from here is generally played on Tuesday & Thursday, with the Resort hosting prompt presentations on both days.
As a PSC affiliated venue we welcome ALL golfers, including ladies & seniors who have opted for the “Silver” tee option. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good golfing!

Allen Raaen best of the week

IPGC golf from The Haven

Monday, Sept. 30, Plutaluang - Stableford
CSS 75 NC
1st Trevor Schirmer (12) 31pts
2nd Mark Armstrong (25) 29pts
3rd Markku Tynell (23) 29pts
4th Shuichi Kodaka (17) 28pts
5th John Carlin (15) 27pts
6th Russell Gilroy (15) 27pts

Allen Raaen.

It had been some time since the group had visited the Royal Thai Navy course at Plutaluang but with the golf scheduler having made an error in booking Greenwood on the last Monday in the month, when everyone else knows they are always closed on that day, a last minute change saw the players find themselves being rescheduled to play the North and East courses in Sattahip.
It turned out to be a very pleasant surprise, even though the course was as wet as any other in the area during the current monsoon period, and the scores did not reflect the condition of the course which was generally quite good. All the contestants were happy with the day’s golf despite the CSS for the day going up to 75 and being non-counting for handicap.
Trevor Schirmer took first place following a solid even handicap opening nine that slowly went downhill thereafter. He finished with a sparse seven points from the last six on the East course but his start had been enough to see off the challengers, with the nearest being two shots adrift.
Mark Armstrong took a well deserved second place after winning a count back over Markku Tynell with a better 17 to 13 after taking just ten points from the final five holes as Markku could total just six.
Shuichi Kodaka, playing his last game before returning to Japan for a short holiday, slipped into fourth place one shot further back, which left John Carlin in fifth after he had also won a count back over Russell Gilroy with a better 13 to 12.
Unsurprisingly there were no 2’s in the second division but Trevor Schirmer added to his day’s haul with the only one in the first division.
Prior to the presentations there was a fond adieu for Shuichi Kodaka which he celebrated by buying a round for the bar.
Wednesday, Oct. 2, Eastern Star - Stableford
CSS 75 NC
1st Alwyne Burley (16) 31pts
2nd Markku Tynell (23) 30pts
3rd Brian Libbey (9) 29pts
4th Ole Stamnes (27) 29pts
5th George Hoskins (16) 28pts
Having missed out badly in the previous outing, by not playing, to take advantage of Hal Hart’s poor performance, Alwyne Burley turned in one of his better cards on a day when the conditions for good scoring were not at their best with the fairways offering little run and the rough about as high as it can get before it is considered jungle.

Alwyn Burley.

However, if the ball was kept on the fairly short stuff a reasonable game could be played, but with the course already one of the longest on the calendar it became a matter of survival for most as the CSS for the day once again went out to 75 to become non-counting for upward review.
Markku Tynell improved a place as he took his second podium of the week in second spot, one shot ahead of a count back for third between Brain Libbey and Ole Stamnes which was won by the former following a better back six of 10 to 9 after they had tied the nine on 16 apiece.
George Hoskins enjoyed his first outing as he finished on the podium in fifth another stroke behind them.
Once again there were no 2’s in the second division and Trevor Schirmer had the only one in the first division.
Before the presentations were made there were welcomes for new members Wayne Farrell and George Hoskins visiting from Phuket for golf at more affordable prices, together with a welcome back from Norway for Ole Stamnes.
Friday, Oct. 4, Pattana A & B (yellow tees) - Stableford
1st Allen Raaen (8) 36pts
2nd Hal Hart (18) 32pts
3rd Markku Tynell (23) 31pts
4th Phil Groves (7) 29pts
5th Russell Gilroy (15) 29pts
Once again the A course had been brought back into service after a short break for some renovations and the general opinion of the players was that it was a little too early, but there were some signs of improvement compared to the pre-closure conditions in most areas.

Trevor Schirmer.

After two non-counting competitions due to the extreme wetness of the courses, another arduous day was anticipated by the group as they assembled at The Haven, which turned out to be not far from the end result as only the winner managed to play to handicap and indeed was the sole player to do so all week.
That man was Allen Raaen who was warming up in preparation for his forthcoming stag night and wedding in the near future.
He won in some style as well by four clear, with a card showing just one blemish when a plugged ball could not be found on the first par three which resulted in a blob, but thereafter a solid performance sealed yet another win for the always dependable Allen.
At least his efforts managed to stop the CSS going out further than to 74, a rise of just one whilst clipping a smidgen off his own handicap and allowing the rest of the field an upward movement.
Hal Hart returned a day late and, with Alwyne celebrating his win with a day off, took on another challenge from the hopeful Russell Gilroy, which ended with another celebratory meal as he took second place.
Markku Tynell claimed his third podium of the week with a solid third place ahead of a count back for fourth and fifth which was won by Phil groves over the hapless Russell Gilroy with a better 13 to 10.
There were no 2’s in the second division as the pot continued to swell but John Carlin had the only one in the first division to sweep the pool.
Back at The Haven there was a welcome for new member Stephen Donahue on a short visit from The USA.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.15 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days that you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

The lull before the storm

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar

The prospects were not good as the Pattaya Golf Society left Soi Buakhao on Monday, 30th September to play a stableford competition at Eastern Star with Typhoon Wutip just around the corner, but the already soft course stayed dry throughout allowing the small field the opportunity of completing the round.
With the course showing its teeth on damp humid days good scores were at a premium and so the twenty-sevens of both Ray Cody and Jesper Hansen were good enough to share second place with the power of Andrew Purdie taking the day with a mere twenty-nine.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the Booby Bevy was rested for a day or two as prospects of a full week of golf disappeared with the expected deluge a few hours later.

Odd Holm-Hansen.

4th Ian Pickels (22) 28pts
5th Jan Lovgreen (20) 27pts
Rayong Country Club was our test today and we got off the first tee 35 minutes early in misty conditions with a heavy downpour and a 15 minute stoppage after 7 holes. The course on the day was very wet and most greens had re-sodded and sanded patches, some surrounded with stakes looking like something out of miniature golf. The management are headed in the right direction improving the course but will take a long time.
Back in the clubhouse, after a round of 4 hours and 20 minutes, welcomes went out to Gordon Clegg, Takeshi Hakozaki and Gordon Everingham and also a farewell to Ian Pickels who was returning to work in Iraq.
The winner of the slosh around today was Odd Holm-Hansen with 33 points ahead of Oddur Olafsson in second on 31 points, Takeshi Hakozaki third on 29 and Ian Pickels and Jan Lovgreen completing the podium.

Mashi masters Wangjuntr

PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Tuesday, Oct. 1, Khao Kheow - Stableford
American humorist Will Rogers quipped, “Everyone talks about the weather but no one does anything about it”, and as several regulars and some new friends met at Tropical Bert’s on Tuesday morning for the “Golfer’s Special” breakfast and complimentary coffee, the main topic on everyone’s lips was the weather. Quite heavy rains the previous two days had everyone worried about course condition and our own well being. The next topic was, “Will the Barry’s win again?”, having taken identical first and second place the previous two outings. Read on for all the answers.

Mashi Kaneta.

Golf at tough but interesting Khao Kheow that day showed ominous clouds all around, but our day was to remain dry yet cloudy enough to keep the worst of the heat away. Parts of the course were soggy but playable, and no standing water to speak of. Playing B & C links from the slightly forward yellow tees compensated for lack of roll the soft ground would provide. Everything was perfect!

In “A” Flight (0-17) Max Scott, playing off a handicap of 4, earned 40 points for a round of even par off the stick on a tough course. Well played Max! Landis Brooks was a distant second with 32 points, and Bob Watson took third with 30.
The “B” Flight had an exciting finish and colorful Walter Baechli grabbed first place with 36 points. The now familiar Barry Oates, who won the previous two outings, finished just back in second place with 35 points, and Don Carmody took third with 33.
Near pin prizes were collected by Max Scott (2), Mashi Kaneta, Bob Watson.
Friday, Oct. 4, Wangjuntr Highlands – Stableford
The group met a little earlier than usual at Tropical Bert’s on Friday for the trek out to Wangjuntr. Everyone gathered into two vans, and good companionship and anticipation of the course made the 1.5hr drive go reasonably quick.

Tuesday winners, Max Scott (left) and Walter Baechli (right) with one of Bert’s finest.

For many it was their first visit to Wangjuntr, and they were in for a real treat playing the Highlands-Right Greens layout! Does any other course have so many signature holes? For anyone who has never been to this most interesting of courses it is well worth the visit.
Conditions this day would best be described as “soggy”. There were some squishy areas, but mostly the ground was firm enough to get around with dry feet. ‘Lift and clean’ was necessary, however several balls were lost in fairways due to burrowing as deep as the gopher in Caddyshack. The good news was it stayed dry other than the required 15 minutes of light rain.
A tough course with tough conditions tested everyone sorely – that is everyone except Mashi Kaneta. While mortals were struggling with damp ground and a difficult layout, Mashi breezed along merrily with approach shots to single digits and a magic putter that cared not for water or slope. When it was all over Mashi had mashed the group with 39 points and an amazing seven points to spare. Well played Mashi, and thanks for the golf lesson!
Playing excellent but human golf, Les Cobban took second place with 32 points, and Wayne Waywood finished third on count back with 30.
Near pins went to Barry Elphick, Mashi Kaneta, Guilan Liu and Mikito Homma.

Owen owns the day at Mountain Shadow

The Billabong Golf Bar Society

(Left-right): Ted Morris, Owen Walkley and John Davis.

Wednesday, Oct. 2, Green Valley – Stableford
Green Valley was our venue as usual today, and it was no carts on the fairways - a first I think for Green Valley, as despite all the rain they have had here the course is still standing up really well.
With nine groups we got off to a slightly early start and due to a couple of no-shows we had three 3-balls at the back. A special thanks to those players for their patience as it was going to be a slow day for them. When we got to the second tee there were three groups waiting to tee off, but after that it just seemed to flow along quite nicely.
The scores were quite good considering the conditions but even though we played winter rules there were also some ordinary returns from some of the boys.
There was a three-way count back for fifth with Cottee getting the nod over Bob Newell and Neil Carter. Fourth place went to Eng Duangwaw with 36 points, third to Sell Wegner on 37 points and in second was Owen Walkley, also with 37. The winner today was Jack Butler with a fine 38 points.
There were three ‘2’s today coming from Sel Wegner with a snake putt of about 25 feet, Brian Maddox with a tap in from 2 feet and Paul Bourke, not sure how close that one was.
We welcomed Leith Turnbull and his brother-in-law Barry Burgess back over from Perth for a week of golf so they were praying for no rain, at least until the weekend was over.
Friday, Oct. 4,
Mountain Shadow - Stableford
We started on time, albeit with a packed tee as another group was sent over from Crystal Bay because it was carts on pathways only there. We went out first on our booked time spot and literary flew around the course, which was quite wet under foot in a lot of places but we were finished in 3½ hours. There was no rain and it didn’t even threaten so I guess we dodged a bullet there.
It was decided to play from the white tees because of the heavy going and it proved to be a wise decision as apart from 4 outstanding scores the course was the winner on the day.
In fourth place was Mark Wood with 37 points off his 8 handicap, third was John Davis with 38 off a handicap of 22, second was Ted Morris (13) with 39 points and in first was Owen Walkley with 40 off his 15 handicap, which won’t be there for much longer.
There were three ‘2’s coming from Capt. Bob with one and the other two from Bob Newell.
We welcomed Barry Lewis back from England and another new face at the Billabong, John Davis.
Note: The Billabong Golf Bar is situated just off Siam Country Club Road looking straight down Lake Mabprachan. Call Bob on 082 204 3411 if you are looking for a game.

Hill makes short work of damp Green Valley

PSC golf from the Outback Golf Bar

Monday, Sept. 30, Burapha - Stableford
After heavy overnight rain and many storms all around, the 23 Outbackers were lucky to tee off early on C and D in overcast and cool weather. Carts were restricted to paths only, so we played ‘lift, clean and place’ on closely mown areas and fairways. Surprisingly, the fairways were reasonably dry and the greens excellent but the rough was wet and even harder to get out of than usual.

Paul Bourke (back left) with John Fitzgerald, Eng (front left) and Maggie Fitzgerald.

Div A was won by 14-handicapper John O’Keefe with 36pts, from Steve Mann (34), Pete Stonebridge (32) and Paul Bourke in fourth with 30.
The day’s best score was John Fitzgerald’s 37pts, waiting until his second to last game before he and Maggie return to Ireland, to achieve the Div B win; well done John, at last! A distant second was the recently arrived Wayne Waywood with 31 and Greg Hill beat Andy Makara on c/b, both on 30.
Welcome back to you, Wayne and of course, Bob Moloney who are here at the start of a month’s golfing holiday including playing up in Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai with the Outback, in about a week’s time.
There were no ‘2’s.
Div A (0-15)
1st John O’Keefe (14) 36pts
2nd Stephen Mann (11) 34pts
3rd Pete Stonebridge (15) 32pts
4th Paul Bourke (9) 30pts
Div B (16+)
1st John Fitzgerald (19) 37pts
2nd Wayne Waywood (16) 31pts
3rd Greg Hill (20) 30pts
4th Andy Makara (24) 30pts
Wednesday, Pct. 2, Bangpra - Stableford
Regrettably the recent heavy rains made it necessary to postpone the Race2Bkk final showdown due to be played at Lotus Valley today, after a conversation with their General Manager about the state of the course. The Race2Bkk will now be played nearer the start of the dry season, so some of you qualifiers who weren’t here today like Murray Hart, John Cunningham and Peter LeNoury may now have the chance to play.
Bangpra was the choice of venue instead and 19 Outbackers decided to chance their hand and the weather but although the course was in excellent condition with carts allowed only in the rough, it wasn’t long before the weather got the upper hand causing a delay of about one hour. During that time, two groups decided to pack up and go home; whilst the remainder sat it out and managed to complete the round.
The scoring however was none too clever, with Steve Mann scoring 31pts to win Div A and John Fitzgerald picking up another win (his last game) with just 27pts to win Div B. There were only four finishers in Div B and we did not receive Glyn’s card until late, so Ray Cody was awarded third place and the NAGA award for his 14pts!
Finally to clarify a point; if everybody in a tournament has teed off and the weather closes in, the tournament is valid if more than half the field complete the round. If less than half finish the competition fee is refunded.
Div A (0-16)
1st Stephen Mann (11) 31pts
2nd Geoff Stimpson (7) 28pts
3rd Sugar Ray Handford (16) 26pts
4th Bob Maloney (12) 26pts
Div B (17+)
1st John Fitzgerald (19) 27pts
2nd John Lawton (19) 22pts
3rd Glyn Davies (20) 21pts
4th Ray Cody (17) 14pts
Friday, Oct. 4,
Green Valley – Stableford
The rainy season is upon us at its full force at this moment with heavy downpours and storms in the last few days. Of the 35 players who signed up originally to play Green Valley on Friday, 31 turned up unsure of whether we were playing or not or indeed if the course was even playable, but it was and the rain had reduced to only a drizzle.
Needless to say, it was very wet so we played ‘lift clean and place’ through the green and it was no surprise that the greens were very slow because of the water on them. So just whack it and hope was sometimes the best policy and looking at the scores, that must have worked extremely well for some of the players.
Before the scores, just a couple of welcome backs, to On & Eng, also to Tony Gliddon, Gordon Clegg & Stewart McKenzie and to Tony Louch, playing with the Outback for the first time.
The best scores were in Div B, where if you didn’t score more than 40pts you didn’t make the top four. Greg Hill recorded the best score of the day to win Div B with 42pts from three all with 41, namely Gordon Clegg, Sunanta Duangwaw (Eng) and John Fitzgerald, who was supposed to have gone back to Ireland the day before. So well done you lot and in a distant fifth, with the modest score of only 35pts, was quite a surprise, John Lawton, who has been working on a new swing together with his new intensive training programme.
Dennis Pelly followed up his previous week’s monthly medal win with another fine round of 41pts to win Div A by two from the consistent Paul Bourke (39) and Geoff Stimpson (also with 39). Ian Parry took fourth, aided by his sand-wedge which he didn’t have in his bag before; just goes to show Ian, you must be spending a lot of time in bunkers, and in fifth was Steve Mann, who is always there or thereabouts.
There were two ‘2’s from Dennis Pelly (4th) & Gordon Clegg (12th).
Div A (0-16)
1st Dennis Pelly (10) 41pts
2nd Paul Bourke (9) 39pts
3rd Geoff Stimpson (7) 39pts
4th Ian Parry (12) 36pts
5th Stephen Mann (11) 35pts
Div B (17+)
1st Greg Hill (20) 42pts
2nd Gordon Clegg (28) 41pts
3rd Sunanta Duangwaw (27) 41pts
4th John Fitzgerald (19) 41pts
5th John Lawton (19) 35pts

Hewitt wins second award of the month

Phoenix Members Golf Society

Tuesday’s winners (Stuart Gordon far left) pose for a photo with the staff at the Relax Bar.

Mike Gerrard
Friday, Sept. 27, we played for the KPK Food Services voucher donated by Keith Keohane and it was Bill Hewitt who posted the best score of the day with a fine 37 points on the Mountain & Lake course. However, he only just pipped Mukesh Thakkar by way of a better back nine.
Yours truly managed third place with 34 points and Jim Neilson claimed fourth place with 33.
Near pins were won by Bill Hewitt (or should I say Samorn), Joris Goetschalckx, Steve Gibson and myself. We love Joris to win a proper prize - this takes him out of the lucky draw which he invariably wins.
So the lucky draw winners on the day were Mukesh Thakkar (free massage) and Nik Evans (free drink), both donated by our hosts The Relax Bar. The final lucky draw prize of 50 baht went to Pierre Bietry.
Leaving the golf aside for a while, a couple of weeks ago there was quite a damning press issued by the Bunker Boys after they had played at Phoenix. In their defence, most of what they said was true. However I can report a few facts appertaining to some of their report.
It was true that a voucher coupon system was installed and that everyone including the drinks stop girls were appalled by it. So much so that all the drink stop girls left the course immediately and left the kiosks unattended. This matter has now been resolved and changed. There is still the coupon system in place but they can be bought from both the registration office or on course at the kiosks. If you do not spend all of the value on the day, the remainder can be redeemed in the restaurant at the end of your game.
The incident with regards to green fee payments seems a little vague. At this time of the year Sports Day rates are in operation and they are lower than any walk-in fee including a members guest. How they had a discrepancy of 300 baht seems impossible. The Sports Day rates are 800 baht on a Tuesday and Thursday and 900 baht on Monday, Wednesday & Friday.
With regards to the marshals and starters, they are in a no win situation. New owners always means new brooms sweep clean and the starters and marshals are all unsure of their positions. Therefore, if management install new rules (whether good or bad) the starters and marshals can only act in favour of their new employers. This is something that will slowly improve when players and staff are settled regarding the future at Phoenix.
One thing is for sure, and all players, whether they are members or guests or just walk in players, will have to come to terms with new rates of fees. The future of this course seems to be moving up in standards and much work is taking place to improve the course. Ocean course has now been closed for some 4 to 5 months and many things (including a computerised watering system) have been implanted.
We are all concerned but make no mistake, this course is not going to be for the cheap charlie’s any more. Caddy fees are going up to 350 baht. Walk-in fees are going up to 2,500 baht week days and 3,000 baht weekends. There has been no final decision made regarding members fees and members guest fees as of yet, but you can bet your bottom dollar they are going to increase.
There is also a suggestion that carts will be compulsory and only one person per cart. However this is not set in writing at this time.
There are many other rumours floating around, but the above figures are the only factual changes at present. So if you wish to enjoy Phoenix (Gold) Golf & Country Club, you had better get it in before the end of October 2013. Who knows, after this month I may be writing under a new heading!
Moving onto Tuesday, October 1, and we welcomed back our old friend Richard Baldwin who acts as the sponsor of Ann’s Salon voucher on the first Tuesday of the month.
Stuart Gordon shrugged off his poor form of late to post a good 39 points to win the day. In second place was Wolfram Krueger with 36 points, third came Gerry Hughes with 34 and in fourth was Steve Gibson with 33. Steve had enjoyed a good run of high scores but this comes with the caveat of having your handicap cut drastically.
Near pins went to Maurice Guiney (2), Stuart Gordon and Joris Goetschalckx (making quite a habit of this. But it keeps him out of the lucky draw).
The lucky draw prizes, donated by our hosts The Relax Bar were awarded to Stuart Gordon, Mike Gerrard and Jim Neilson.
The highlight of the day was a brilliant ‘eagle’ 3 at the last hole by Richard Baldwin. At the presentation we advised Richard that this was the same as a hole in one (both eagles) and we would be happy to receive a drink for his efforts. Richard was very quick to point out that it was not a hole in one and firmly secured his wallet in his back pocket.

Robbins rules the roost

PSC golf from the Bunker Boys @ The Ranch

Tony Robbins (left), winner of the KPK voucher at Green Valley, with Mashi and Colin.

Monday, Sept. 30, Green Valley - KPK Medal
There was heavy rain overnight and the morning was grey and threatening, which deterred a few fair weather golfers, so only three groups headed off to Green Valley. We drove through heavy rain travelling down route 36, but when we arrived at the course it appeared to have stopped - only commencing again as the first group teed off!
This was our third medal competition of the month, once again sponsored by KPK Foods, and we elected to play winter rules as the fairways were saturated. The first four holes were played in steady drizzle but then the clouds moved away and the rest of the round was completed in bright sunshine, with the course drying out rapidly as the round progressed.
The conditions meant that scoring was going to be difficult and no one suffered more than the pre-tournament favourite Peter Habgood (5 wins from the previous 7 medal competitions) who eventually returned to the clubhouse to claim the wooden spoon.
It was a day for the wily old veterans as Tony Robbins was the declared the winner on a count back ahead of Reg Smart, with the much younger Mark West a shot behind in third place. It was Reg Smart’s best performance in a medal competition for quite some time, and he also picked up a near pin prize which he generously used to provide chips for his mates back at The Ranch.
1st Tony Robbins (14) net 75
2nd Reg Smart (26) net 75
3rd Mark West (15) net 76
Near Pins: Alan Freeman, John Graham, Mark West, and Reg Smart.
Wednesday, Oct. 2, Treasure Hill – Stableford
Another grey morning and the rain started falling just as we prepared to leave The Ranch, so for the second game in succession we were down to three groups of hardy golfers. The rain became torrential as we headed towards the 7 motorway, but halfway to the course it suddenly stopped and the skies cleared.
We arrived at the clubhouse to find we were virtually the only people there, and we teed off at our leisure in bright sunshine with the fairways dry. The extensive work being carried out around the greens is still ongoing and seems to have been going on for an eternity, but one has to assume that sometime (hopefully in the near future) the course will be back in tip top condition.
We had a brief ten minute shower of rain halfway through the round but other than that the conditions were good although the greens were exceptionally slow, and most golfers struggled to get the ball to the hole.
Geoff Parker produced the best score of the day (a very rare event for him at Treasure Hill) to take first place ahead of Neil Hurst who was playing his first game following his recent return to Pattaya.
The only controversy of the day was on the par three 17th hole when a badly cut fringe area around the green sparked a discussion as to whether Alan Freeman’s tee shot was on or off the green for the near pin prize, but eventually it was deemed to be off.
1st Geoff Parker (14) 35pts
2nd Neil Hurst (12) 33pts
3rd Peter Habgood (18) 32pts
Near Pins: Alan Freeman, Geoff Hart, Geoff Parker, and Peter Habgood.
Friday, Oct. 4, Green Valley - Medal
This must have been one of the wettest weeks in recent memory, and we received a call from our scheduled venue, Crystal Bay, to inform us that no buggies would be allowed on the course due to the heavily saturated ground. In order to accommodate our senior members a change of venue was required, and we were able to squeeze our three groups onto Green Valley, for our second visit of the week.
Once again the trip down route 36 was undertaken in heavy drizzle and it was still persisting as we arrived at the course. After some deliberation, we decided to take the plunge and teed off in light drizzle. All went well for the outward nine, and although the fairways were soggy, the greens were fine, and the drizzle was intermittent and hardly worthy of raising an umbrella.
We were beginning to think that the golfing gods were smiling on us again, but as the leading group reached the 13th hole, the heavy rain arrived and the fairways and greens quickly flooded. Despite waiting over an hour for the deluge to subside, there was no sign of the skies clearing, and we were forced to cancel the competition and make the long (and extremely wet) trek back to the clubhouse.
The Green Valley management generously provided us with a rain check for nine holes (something which fewer and fewer courses are doing nowadays) so we will be heading back in a couple weeks to complete the task, on what is one of our favourite courses.
Note: The Bunker Boys play out of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station, and almost opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play three times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. New players are always welcome. Contact “Buff” on 086 046 5091 or 080 605 5663 for all enquiries.

Golfnutter: Annoying Golf Partners

Most if not all of us have experienced golf partners who are annoying. Some, it has to be said, can be so frustrating that they have an adverse effect on their playing partner’s score, as well as their sense of enjoyment. My “favourites:”
Slow Players and Time Wasters: “But my pre-shot routine is identical to Bob’s. He’s a 5-handicapper and no-one says he’s slow.” What some high-handicappers don’t appreciate is that Bob will take circa 20-30 shots less per round – a huge difference in aggregate time. Other annoying traits include those not “ready to go” when it’s their turn, elaborate putting routines, playing out every hole without a chance of a stableford, and cart users who don’t take more than one club when conditions dictate they walk to their ball.
Sandbagger: Amongst the most despised in Pattaya, and because of the USGA Handicapping System, it’s so easy to do. These are the types who “disappear” from competition golf for a few months, only to turn up at some prize-rich tournament with an inflated handicap. Sometimes they “hide” amongst similarly minded mates who then emerge to massacre the field in a four-ball scramble. Entering one’s own scores into a handicapping system, that includes social rounds, is akin to self-serving politicians placing their constituent’s welfare in front of their own.
Mathematically Challenged: Don’t expect these characters to falsely claim a par or birdie, as that is too obvious. They are more likely to claim a “five” or “six” when in fact they had one more. Often a seasoned campaigner, this character is most at home when partnered with a newbie, particularly one with a high handicap.
Pretentious Newbie: The undesirable who continually pleads innocent when he or his caddie infringes the Rules. Examples include allowing caddie to tap down spike marks on line of putt, through to not noticing caddie’s infringements every time she marks his ball. Understandable when happening during a golfer’s initial rounds in Thailand, but not after round number fifty! Believes Pattaya golf should be less rules-compliant than home club.
Oblivious Type: Concerned with own performance to the exclusion of everybody else. Makes no attempt to be part of the social interaction, and no, it’s not due to a language problem. Golfers in this category tend to be between one and nine handicap, and invariably treat every dropped shot as though it had just cost them the lead at the Masters. Their biggest problem is they have lost sight of what golf in Pattaya is really about. Winning a Green Jacket it is not.
Rageaholic: Includes the club-thrower, the earth-digger and the individual who continually shows his frustration by screaming abuse, long and loud. Expressing frustration is common enough – we all do it – but when it’s done in a manner that causes discomfort to other players, or has the caddies feeling threatened, that is when the line of acceptable behaviour is crossed. To those that get off using such antics – what gives you the right to “invade” other’s space? And realise this; you’re golf’s not good enough to justify such anger, and that specifically includes low-markers!
Preciousness Personified: Don’t for god’s sake move, cough, whisper or even breath if within 100 yards of this type when he’s about to play a shot – especially when he’s on the putting green. Watch for the hissy-fit when caddies move off to the next tee, just as his snaking, downhill, 30-footer misses the cup – by miles. His sensitivity is such that whenever it’s his shot, his personal space expands to embrace half the golf course. Toughen up, princess.
Gadget Gurus: With anything from rangefinders to GPS, these guys and their gizmos can be a source of slow play, as well as annoying. Yes it’s within the Rules to use an aid to determine distance, but why wait until the flag has been replaced until measurement is taken? Use one of the players putting-out then you’re good to go when it’s your turn. Offering the rangefinder’s capabilities to others at the start of the round is good, as is sharing distance information on par-threes, providing such activity doesn’t slow the pace of play. Ball-retrievers need not be used at every water hazard. Mobiles – enough said.
Delusional Type: Inflated view of own ability, particularly in regards to how far he hits a golf ball. Often lauds his own shots, alluding to their difficulty – his 250-yard drives are always into the wind. Enjoys striding out into the fairway, stopping by your ball with a pointed “good drive” compliment, knowing his is 10 yards further on. Infuriatingly delays playing his second to – for him – an unreachable par-5, thus losing your four-ball’s place in the field. Back at the bar, is only capable of talking about his shots, his game, his ego.
Recognise anyone?
Happy golfing,
Golfnutter

Bissell bests Burapha with 42 points

Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

Monday, Sept. 30, Pleasant Valley – Stableford
There have been a few moans and groans here previously from the division 2 players regarding which tees to play from, especially considering the carry off the blue tees on the 10th, 12th and 14th holes. So we experimented today with division 1 off the blues and division 2 off the whites.

Dennis Scougall.

On the first tee the blue marker was on the black and the white tee was on the red so this potentially would be confusing. After nine holes the first group informed us that their last eight holes (all white markers) had been moved backward to the blue tees. The set-up on the inward nine was identical, which gave us food for thought for our next game here in early November.
John Oxley, playing off 17, won division 2 with 41 points ahead of Chris Reed in second with 39 (after scoring 11 points on the last three holes) and James Brookes took third with 37.
Kari Kuparinen (off 6) was the winner in division 1 with 39 points, Mike Chatt claimed second three points behind and Iain Usher came in third with 35.
Near pins went to Kari Kuparinen (2), Iain Usher, John Oxley, Burnie Sinclair, Ole Sorensen and Fred Temminck.
Kari Kuparinen birdied the 17th for the only ‘2’ in division 1 and with a rollover from Khao Kheow in division 2, John Oxley, Sid Ottaway and Burnie Sinclair shared the pot.
Wednesday, Oct. 2, Burapha - Stableford
A field of 25 players out today with the cut at 6-17 in division 1 and 18+ in division 2 and we were allocated the A and B courses so played off the white tees today.
Alan Bissell came in with 42 points to win division 2 with Reijo Heiskanen taking second after beating Tom Novak on count back, both scoring a remarkable 25 points on the back nine and 41 points each overall.

Tony Kay.

Wilf Latham’s 39 was the winning score in division 1, with Terry Madsen second on 38 and Wichai Tanunasorn in third place with 37.
Near pins were claimed by Kari Kuparinen, Wilf Latham, Terry Madsen, Chris Voller, Ray Gott and Glenn King (2).
Kari and Wichai birdied A3 and A6 respectively to take the ‘2’s pot in division 1 and Glenn King had a ‘2’ on B6 in division 2.
There were warm welcome returns today to Bob Poole from China, the telephone box entrepreneur Dennis Scougall from Scotland and Tony Kay from down under.
Friday, Oct. 4, Eastern Star – Stableford
There were a few cancellations overnight and early morning due to the adverse weather conditions in the area. In the end we had 19 players out with the cut at 7-15 and 16+ and with 36 points Tony Thorne (playing off 14) won division 1 ahead of Marty Rock in second on 34 and Karl Flood beat Paul Butler on a 14/12 back-six count back for third after they both scored 30 points overall.
Near pins went to Ted Gardner (2), Wilf Latham, Tony Thorne and Andy Baber.
Tony Thorne took the rollover first division ‘2’s pot with birdies on the 6th and 17th but in division 2 there are now three rollovers to Friday 18th Oct.

Baxter beats the bus trip blues

Travellers Rest Golf Group

Andy Rich
Back to normal this week with the tour party returning from Hua Hin, singing the praises of the golf courses over there and promising to make the trip an annual event in future.

John Baxter.

This week did not get off to the best of starts when our normal bus driver sub-contracted the work to a new driver who drove a bus shortly destined for the knackers yard, in fact if it had been a horse we would have shot it there and then. It was one of those running on gas, or should I say breaking down on gas. It stopped so many times I thought the driver must be selling ice creams along the way. Needless to say after we called in the rescue services on the way home and buses and taxis were dispatched to pick us all up our bus decided to behave itself and got us all home, it taking just over two hours back from Emerald.
Monday, Sept. 30, The Emerald - Stableford
So to Monday, and the day we played Emerald will be remembered more for the awful trip there and back than the golf itself. John Baxter, however, had a good day after rattling in 38 pts to take first place and the old Welsh wizard Alun Webber was only just behind to finish runner up, with Clive Bruce in close attendance taking third place.

Rod Ewan.

1st John Baxter (14) 38pts
2nd Alun Webber (18) 37pts
3rd Clive Bruce (9) 36pts
Tuesday, Oct. 1, Green Valley - Stableford
On Tuesday it was a welcome return to Green Valley where the course is always nicely laid out. Mod Chaviraksa (12) certainly found it to her liking and finished on top of the winner’s podium, while Fergus Brennan and Jim Cooper fought it out for second and third with Fergus winning on count back.
1st Mod Chaviraksa (12) 37pts
2nd Fergus Brennan (13) 36 pts
3rd Jim Cooper (13) 36 pts
Thursday, Oct. 3, Phoenix - Stableford
It was back to Phoenix (Mountain and Lakes) on Thursday to round off the week’s golf for the TRGG. Only four points separated the first six golfers so it was a close run thing. Rod Ewan pipped Rob Taylor for top spot but only on count back as Tewin Poopay Lamthong came in close behind to take third place.
1st Rod Ewan (12) 34pts
2nd Rob Taylor (8) 34pts
3rd Tewin Poopay Lamthong (11) 33pts
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week and if you would like to play a round of golf with the TRGG, please phone Fergus Brennan on 086 056 7019 or pop into the Ned Kelly Bar in Soi Lengkee and add your name to the weekly lists which are posted on the notice board.

Swingin’ in the rain

PSC golf from The Golf Club

The rain cannot stop Nigel, Brad and Ian.

Steve Ellison
Monday, Sept. 30, Green Valley (white tees) – Stableford
1st Nigel Flanagan (12) 38pts
T2nd Dale Shier (13) 36pts
T2nd Phil Williams 36pts
T3rd Rick Allison (2) 35pts
T3rd Peter Rogers (21) 35pts
T3rd Mike Newbert (10) 35pts
Lots of golfers out today, in spite of the gloomy skies, and off to our Monday game at Green Valley. It also seemed like a lot of golfers wanted to shoot a 35 today as we had a 3-way tie for third! The names of the usual suspects are listed above.
It has been awhile since Nigel Flanagan topped the leaderboard playing with us, but it was good to see him playing so well and returning back to form. Is this the shape of things to come? Ya see Nigel, that couple of extra kilos can actually help your game. C’mon man!
Tuesday, Oct. 1, Khao Kheow (yellow tees) – Stableford
1st Tate Akifumi (17) 22pts
2nd Rick Allison (2) 19pts
It was a rough old day on the golf course today and there were few survivors. We were lucky enough to be playing the just reopened “B” track and in spite of the downpour, it is looking great. The course, like most in Pattaya, has had a tough week of hard rain so we weren’t expecting fabulous conditions. Let’s just see how hard the greenkeeping crews work next week to get things back up to scratch.
The hard rain does not seem to bother some people, and our pal Aki had a superb 9 holes of golf to score a whopping 22 Stableford points to claim victory today. It is a shame we could not finish the round, but all credit to Aki for a brilliant front (and only) 9. Steady Rick Allison’s name was on the podium once again and he is a hard guy to beat these days.
Friday, Oct. 4,
Mountain. Shadow (white tees) – Stableford
1st Peter Rogers (21) 38pts
2nd Jimmy Dundon (14) 35pts
3rd Phil Smedley (9) 32pts
We originally had Crystal Bay on our schedule for today, but a most unusual thing happened. I got a phone call the day before from Crystal Bay alerting me to the fact that there were no golf carts allowed on the course as it was quite wet, and they had reserved optional tee times for me at Mt. Shadow! How great is that? All credit and thanks to the management of Crystal Bay to take such an honest and pro-active approach to their situation.
We gratefully accepted the option and Phil gathered the slightly damp masses to set out for the course. It was a bit of a slog, but it sure is nicer getting drenched at 32 degrees here than 18 degrees back in Blighty! After a short rain delay, the lads soldiered on only to find our fearless Golf Captain, now playing off 9, bring in 32 points for third place. Ahead of Phil was the recently departed (as in just left, not dead) Jimmy Dundon (see ya back in Feb. Jim!) who claimed sole second with 35 points.
The rainy day belonged to Peter Rogers, and after a spell of several months not on top of the heap, it was good to see our pal get back into the swing of things again with a 38. In March, Peter had a great run of several wins and good luck to him that this is just the beginning of many more in October. Peter also had a good showing on Monday with a tie for third.
Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro. We try to schedule summer “Sports Days”, so come join us for a seriously fun day out. Ben’s team puts a winning plan together

PSC Pattaya Softball

Sunday softball action with the Pattaya Sports Club.

Sunday, Sept, 29, was another great outing of Pattaya softball at the ‘Colosseum’. Aside from the usual suspects we saw the return of Kevin and also had two new players, both Thai nationals.
With a very good turnout of players, both full teams matched up evenly and at 1pm it was game time. Game 1 featured the A-Team managed by Rick S. against the B-Team managed by Big Ben. It was a closely contested matchup with some good play on both offense and defense, but the B team prevailed with the victory by a score of 8 to 5.
The “Just Burgers” play of the day came late in Game 1 as the A team was threatening a comeback. With bases loaded Vince hit a hard one hop grounder to waiting shortstop Tyler, who fielded the ball and tagged second base unassisted to force the out of the hard charging Phil. He then made a perfect throw to Jesse at first base to complete the picture perfect double play to end the inning and the hopes of a comeback.
Remember PSC Softball is open to anyone looking for a great way to spend your Sunday afternoon and get some exercise. Regardless of your skill level all are welcome to play but we do ask if you’re a beginner to please show up early before the 1pm start time to receive some instruction and briefing on the rules.
Visit the PSC website and click on softball for more information…. see you at the ball park!

Tiffany’s Show, Pattaya Mail support Ladyboy water-volleyball tournament

Tony Sales
We can’t overlook the contributions to the upcoming 2013 Pattaya Ladyboy Water-Volleyball Competition made by the competing ladyboys and the bars where they are employed. Without them and their time, given freely, there wouldn’t be a tournament and consequently our worthy charities wouldn’t benefit.
Then there are the financial contributors, both personal and corporate, who provide the funds that go directly to our charities. But it’s not just financial contributors to which we are indebted. This year we’re happy to have the Pattaya Mail Media Group once more giving us an outlet from which to promote the charity tournament and highlight the tremendous contribution the ladyboys are making to their communities. And of course there are our gracious tournament hosts at the Areca Lodge on Soi Diana.
But we’d be fibbing if we didn’t say we were especially thrilled to have the participation of Tiffany’s Show this year! The world famous Tiffany’s Show Pattaya is the original transgender cabaret show here and is currently in its 38th year.
Its showgirls are paragons of both beauty and talent, and the show itself is a huge tourist draw for Pattaya. Through the efforts of Pattaya Mail, Tiffany’s Show Pattaya has generously agreed to donate five tickets to the Miss International Queen competition, which will be part of the charity raffle held on the evening following the tournament.
The Miss International Queen competition is a once-a-year event presented by Tiffany’s Show that draws transgender women from all over the world to compete for the title. This year the event will be held on Nov. 1, only a week after the Pattaya Ladyboy Water-Volleyball Competition. The tickets always sell out well in advance, so we expect these will be popular items for the charity raffle — in fact we expect some of the tournament spectators will be outbid by the volleyball contestants!
All of these efforts are critical to the success of this year’s charity event, and Pattaya Mail, Tiffany Show and Areca Lodge all have our utmost heartfelt thanks.
But of course raising money for charities is what the tournament is all about. With that in mind, I’m happy to say that we are now on track to to raise 700,000 baht for said charities: Pattaya Rotary Club’s Water4Life program, Pattaya’s HEARTT 2000, Bangkok’s St. Camillus Foundation of Thailand’s Camillian Home program, and Phuket’s The Life Home Project. Thanks to many generous financial contributors and sponsors, we have more than doubled last year’s charitable contribution of 285,854 baht.
To date 86 individuals have pledged 110 sponsorships of one or more of the bars competing in the tournament. That amounts to 350,000 baht — once again, that alone puts us over last year’s mark. To all of them, on behalf of the charities involved and the ladyboys in the tournament, I’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you.
But this year we also have a corporate sponsor on board in NB Surveys Thailand Co. Ltd., the Thai branch of NB Surveys Global. To say that we are thrilled to have such an august company sponsoring the tournament would be an understatement.
With headquarters in Aberdeen, Scotland, NB Global provides surveying services to the oil and gas industry, onshore and offshore, and has offices in Australia, Brunei, India, Malaysia and United Arab Emirates, in addition to its office in Bangkok.
Established in 2001, NB Surveys Thailand began with just one expat employee, but has steadily grown over the ensuing decade to now include several local Thai staff in both the survey department and the office operations. To NB Surveys we must also extend our heartfelt thanks as well.
The 2013 Pattaya Ladyboy Water-Volleyball Competition is slated for Saturday, October 26. For more information or to see how you can help, email us at lbwvb@hotmail. com, or visit us on the web at www.lbwvb.com.

Pattaya bowlers compete in USA

Dennis Mijnheimer, Frank De Vries, Harvey Samuel, Dan Christensen and Orawan Sodok.

Five bowlers from Pattaya have just returned from southern California where they were competing in the US Open Lawn Bowls Championships 2013.
The six competitions included singles, pairs, and fours for both men and ladies.
Dan, Dennis, Frank and US resident Aaron Zangl reached the final of the Men’s fours championship where they were beaten by the current world champions from Scotland: Alex Marshall, Paul Foster, Neil Speirs and David Peacock.
Harvey lost in the semi finals of the fifth flight pairs to a team skipped by an ex-English champion and lost in the semi final of the seventh flight singles 18-15 to a current Scottish international.
Orawan unfortunately had some difficult draws and was unable to make it past the qualifying sections of each of her competitions.
Almost 200 men and 100 ladies from more than 10 countries competed at 6 different bowls clubs just south of Los Angeles. The competition was dominated by international bowlers from Scotland who won 5 of the 6 gold medals available.

Stuvik wins at Monza to retain championship lead

Sandy Stuvik (2nd right) celebrates on the podium after winning Race 2 at the Monza Circuit in Italy.

The RP Motorsport Team looked dominant during the Friday testing at the Monza Circuit in Italy last weekend, with Thailand’s Sandy Stuvik setting the fastest times during the three test sessions. However, by the time Saturday’s F3 Open qualification started, the weather conditions had changed dramatically and the Italian circuit was wet under a steady drizzle of rain.
The compromised wet set-up used by the RP team on the F3 cars would not be enough, as all their cars finished down the order. Stuvik could only manage a P6, his lowest this season, as the start position for the first race.
With the overhead conditions changing by the hour, the Monza circuit had all but dried up by the start of the opening race and all the European Formula 3 cars had reverted back to slick tires. Championship leader Stuvik had a very good start and moved from 6th to 3rd after the first corner and on the following lap he moved up to 2nd position. The Thai racer managed to catch up to the leader, Jones from the UAE, before his tires started fading and he would eventually be overtaken in the final stages of the race by two other cars, to end the race in 4th position.
The result of the first race meant that the Thai driver lost his F3 Open championship lead to Ed Jones by 5 points, the first time this season that Stuvik has not led the championship.

Sandy Stuvik (bottom) steers his car through the chicane while leading at the Monza Circuit in Italy, Sunday, Oct. 6.

Sunday morning qualifying was again on a dry track and the fastest times could only be set by slip-streaming other cars around the 5.8 km long Monza circuit. The RP team drivers managed the technique to perfection as they locked out the top 1-2-3 places, with Stuvik in the end securing P3 behind Uruguay’s Urrutia in second and France’s Cougnaud taking his first pole position of the season.
Rain fell again at lunch time on Sunday and a damp but drying track invited the Formula 3 grid for the second race, leaving everyone to gamble between wet or dry tires. Stuvik opted to start with slick tires although light rain was still falling, while his strongest rival Ed Jones opted for wet weather tires.
As the red lights went out at Monza the Thai driver again had another characteristic fast start and managed to stay with his team mates safely through the first corner, then the positions started changing lap by lap as the drivers took advantage of Monza long straights to pass one another. By lap 4 Stuvik was up into 2nd place and would swap positions virtually every lap until lap 9 when he went up into the lead.
Four different drivers led the race at one time or another, but on the final lap it was Stuvik who intelligently planned his overtaking maneuver and stormed up into the lead and built a gap around the sweeping Parabolica curve to take the checkered flag 1.2 second ahead of his French team mate, Alexandre Caugnaud in second.
With the Monza victory, Sandy Stuvik moved back into the lead of the championship with 239 points over Ed Jones’ 219 points, as the European Formula 3 Open grid moves on to Spain for the final showdown of the 2013 season in Barcelona over the weekend 9 to 10 November.

Chonburi juniors hold sway at local football tourney

Planet Football was the location for the Perfume House Football Tournament, which took place on Sunday 29th September. Twenty-eight teams competed in three age groups, under 9, 11 and 13, and teams arrived from Bangkok and Chonburi to join many from the local Pattaya area.
This annual competition, now in its third year, is organised by Jeremy Akoum of The Perfume House, a nationwide chain of shops selling perfume and scents, with the aim of providing youngsters with the opportunity to take part in a prestigious tournament, improve their playing and team building skills, win a trophy, medals and there were cash prizes for the winning teams.
The remaining proceeds will be donated to the Father Ray Foundation, who entered two teams, one from the Father Ray Children’s Home and the second from the Children’s Village.

The under-9 team from Darasamuth School show off their winners’ trophy, medals and cash prize.

Every player was presented with a football shirt, sponsored by SOHO Townhouse and the Pattaya Sports Club, and a Bangkok Glass FC shirt, signed by well known Thai premier league player Teeratep, was auctioned off to the highest bidder, and it was local businessman Martin Kinsella who took the shirt home.
While the local teams played well, and several players showed skills that may see them playing in the Thai Premier League in years to come, it was the teams from Chonburi FC who dominated, and won, the under 11 and under 13 competitions, while the youngsters from Darasamuth School carried the winners trophy home after winning the under 9 competition.
Chonburi were too strong for the Pattaya 1 team in the under 13 final, beating them 6 goals to nil, and the under 11 team completed the double success for Chonburi by beating local team FC Planet in their final. In the under 9’s tournament, Darasamuth School were triumphant over the Satit Udom Sueksa School in the deciding match.

Chonburi FC - champions of the under-11 group.

The day was a long one for many of the players, especially those who reached the final stages of the competition, but at the same time it was a great experience for all those who participated. Many local tournaments are organised for older teenagers, but this tournament has shown that there are hundreds of youngsters who not only enjoy playing football, but who also want to play competitively against others.

The Father Ray Children’s Village were unlucky to concede more goals than any other team, eleven in one game, but they still managed to smile.
