Pattaya Sports Club Bowling League
200 Bowlers: Tue, Jang & Dima.
No less than four teams are tied for first place and the
only thing separating them is total pins. This could turn out to be a very
interesting league.
VFW Post 9876 won three points from Bavaria with Tue Pettae leading the way
for VFW with a 202 game and 536 series.
Tea Party, bowling without Captain Joe Ferral, won all four points from Café
Kronborg. Kronborg had only Captain Kran bowling for her team as the other
two bowlers did not show up. New bowler Dima, bowling as a Pacer, had a 201
game and 523 series.
Sue Murphy bowled a 509 series to lead Canada to a four point win over
Brother D.
Green Tree won three points from Indiana led by Noodle Russell who had a 501
series and Jang Shaw chipped in with a 200 game. La Montgomery tried her
best for Indiana bowling games of 177, 177 and 189 for a 543 series but it
was only good enough to win one point.

Veteran Morris almost shoots his age
PSC golf from The Growling Swan

Dineley & Ted Morris.

Monday, Sept. 9, Bangpra – Stableford
The weekend was over and it was time to get back
into the serious stuff – Golf! Bangpra has long been a favourite of many and
the current Sports Day rate of 800 baht Green Fee is certainly excellent
value for money even though after next month it will be back to “High
Season” rates.
There was a terrific Monday field of 27 golfers signed up to play and when
veteran Hugh O’Donnell turned up at 8.25 am looking for a game due to his
golf at another golf outlet being cancelled, that made it an even seven
groups of four. Three mini vans had been ordered so with a few travelling in
private cars there was plenty of room for Hugh and he was of course given a
hearty welcome along with our friend Bob Akapita from Gove in the Northern
Territory of Australia, Mark Stapleton from Melbourne and long time Pattaya
resident Rita Zoebelli.
We sped off up No. 7 and arrived at the course just 39 minutes later which
meant we had plenty of time before our 10.00 am booked tee off and we were
asked by the Starter to please proceed straight away which meant our first
four-ball got away 10 minutes ahead of schedule at 9.50 am. The weather was
fine but hot with very little breeze and the golf course was as ever in
terrific shape with the infamous Bangpra slick greens all too eager to
punish anyone with lengthy putts above the hole.
We breezed through the first nine in just over two hours but slowed down
considerably on the back nine after catching up with a Japanese lady
four-ball. Not to worry as it was a very enjoyable round of golf with
excellent company and our eighteen holes were completed in four hours &
fifteen minutes.
John Davis, Paul Kennedy &
Bob Akapita.
We had 2 Grades - A Grade for handicaps 0
to 17 and B Grade for handicaps 18 & over with 6 places in each grade. There
were also rewards for nearest the pins on the four par threes and longest
first putts on the 9th & 18th greens.
After having his best round of golf for many months, the visiting Bob
Akapita won the A Grade with 35 points, just 1 point ahead of Mike Allidi in
second place. With 3 golfers on 33 points a count back was necessary to
determine third, fourth & fifth and it was Kevin “Wayco” Waycott (18 point
back nine) taking third spot from Jayson Schembri (17 point back nine) in
fourth place and fifth went to Sal Brizzi (14 point back nine). Another
count back was required to decide sixth place with two on 32 points and
Ebrahim (16 point back nine) claimed that spot from your writer, Peter
“Blacky” Blackburn (15 point back nine).
The B Grade was won by John Davis who had 35 points and with 2 golfers
having 34 points another count back saw Patrick Poussier (18 point back
nine) take second place from Rita Zoebelli (14 point back nine) with
Thientong Charoenrung fourth on 33 points. Graham “Grunter” Buckingham took
fifth place with 32 points and in a count back for sixth with two players on
30 points it was veteran Hugh O’Donnell (19 point back nine) who edged out
Max “Corsets” Bracegirdle (16 point back nine).
The golf course was as usual the winner on the day with no-one playing to
their handicap or better but it had been a really good day at a quality golf
venue.

The Growling Swan NAGA Award, (awarded to the golfer who has the worst score
on the day and discreetly their score is not made public) was won by Paul
Kennedy and he accepted & wore the award with pride for quite some time in
the bar later.
Thursday, Sept. 12, Pleasant Valley – Stableford
It was a wet Thursday morning as we gathered at
The Growling Swan in readiness for the journey to the Pleasant Valley Golf
Course and there was yet another bumper field of 34 golfers signed up to
play.
We welcomed Graham Rice from Gove in the Northern Territory of Australia,
Peter Petroaillis from Brisbane and Italian Luca Santi currently working in
Pattaya. It was sadly time to farewell Paul Kennedy who is returning to
Melbourne and Bob Akapita who is returning to his work at Gove in the
Northern Territory of Australia.
We departed the GS in three mini vans just a tad after our scheduled 8.30 am
and proceeded to the golf course in drizzling rain but we were of course
confident of an uninterrupted round of golf – well it almost was!
After just 39 minutes we arrived at the course and it appeared to be fairly
busy as is only natural on this fine golf course at a good price and after
waiting 10 minutes or so we sent our first four-ball away 15 minutes ahead
of schedule at 9.45 am. There had been a fair bit of rain overnight so carts
were not allowed on the fairways which meant preferred lies were the order
of the day and as the fairways were somewhat soggy this did help
considerably.
Apart from the wet the course was looking quite good although some of the
greens were very slow and took some time to adjust to the pace. We completed
the front nine in just over two hours & then the heavens opened but
thankfully it only lasted about fifteen minutes and after sheltering for a
short while we continued without any more interruptions. Four hours and
fifteen minutes was all it took to complete the round even with the stoppage
and I have to say it was very enjoyable to have played with another three of
the Growling Swan Delinquents in Andrew, Russell and Fred.
We had 3 Grades - A Grade for handicaps 0 to 13, B Grade for handicaps 14 to
21 & C Grade for handicaps 22 and over with 4 places in each grade. There
were also rewards for nearest the pins on the four par threes and longest
first putts on the 9th & 18th greens.
We played off the white tees mainly due to the wet conditions so I
anticipated some good scores but veteran Ted Morris had an absolute day out
and almost shot his age (75) in winning the A Grade with a magnificent 45
points off his 13 handicap – Well done Ted! Another terrific score of 69
gross could only give Mike Allidi second spot with his 42 points and Peter
Bye was third with 40 points with John Pierrel fourth on 39 points.
There were three players in the B Grade with 39 points so a count back was
required which resulted in newcomer Luca Santi (22 point back nine) being
declared the winner from Mark “Westy” West (21 point back nine) in second
place and Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei (20 point back nine) took out
third place. Stu “Heineken” Rifkin finished fourth with 37 points.
In the C Grade Fred Dineley’s 39 points got him first place from Paul
“Muncha” Moloney in second place. John Davis finished third with 35 points
and Mark Stapleton was fourth on 33 points.

The Growling Swan NAGA Award was well won by Niall
Stuart once again and he accepted & wore the award with pride. Andrew
“Turtle” Allen then kindly paraded Deefa the Dog and of course collected
many donations for the needy in Pattaya from our generous Growling Swan
Golfers.
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any persuasion – low & high
handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We generally play Mondays
& Thursdays, meeting at The Growling Swan (formerly The Bunker Bar) in Soi
Chaiyapoon at 8.00 am with transport departing at 8.30 am. For bookings or
more information please contact Peter on 0806 351 386 or email to
[email protected].
We also play bowls out of the Growling Swan every Wednesday and Sunday.
Sunday is Lawn Bowls and Wednesday is Indoor Bowls. All are welcome and for
anyone that is interested the transport leaves The Growling Swan at 10.00am
on each of those mornings. For more information please contact Paul Rennison

Lee back with a bang at Navy
PSC golf from the Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
Monday, Sept. 9, Bangpra – Medal
A late, enforced change of venue saw us managing
to squeeze our two groups onto the popular Bangpra course for our first
medal competition of the month. The mix up was due to a major blunder by our
schedule manager, who fortunately for him was absent on holiday.
Duncan Lee romped home at the
Navy course.
The weather was bright and sunny and the
course was in it’s usual excellent condition, with the greens as slick and
tricky as ever. There’s one outstanding favourite whenever we play medal
format, and once again Peter Habgood produced the best score of the day,
finishing eight shots clear of second placed Geoff Parker.
We experienced one of those strange phenomena of Thai weather on the inward
nine, when we had a brief two minute shower of rain, and there wasn’t a
cloud to be seen in the sky!
All in all a great day despite the late change of venue, and our booking
scheduler is in for some serious stick when he returns to Pattaya next week.

Wednesday, Sept. 11, Burapha - Stableford
On previous visits to Burapha, taking advantage of
the summer Sports Day promotion, the course has been busy, but today it was
relatively quiet and we were able to tee off a few minutes before our
scheduled tee time.
Once again the weather was bright and sunny and we elected to play off the
shorter white tees on the more difficult C and D nines. The course was in
great condition, but it appears there must be a tournament planned soon
because the rough is being allowed to grow to professional standard, and
presents some real difficulty for the amateur golfer.
Today was a perfect example of the joys of low season golf, playing a top
quality course in near perfect conditions, and the round was completed in
three and a half hours. Ken Young managed to stay out of most of the trouble
and recorded his second successive victory in his last two starts, finishing
one point ahead of Geoff Parker.
Ken also managed to claim his first near pin prize of the year to date, so
was in jubilant mood at the presentation back at The Ranch
1st Ken Young (28) 38pts
2nd Geoff Parker (14) 37pts
3rd Mashi Kaneta (14) 36pts
Near Pins: Geoff Hart, Geoff Parker and Ken Young.
Friday, Sept. 13, Plutuluang East & South –
Stableford
It was a grey, cloudy morning as we set off for
the trip to Sattahip, and the prospects of a rain-free round didn’t look
good. Our four groups tee’d off on schedule with a very light drizzle
falling for the first three holes, but then the clouds cleared away and the
rest of the round was completed in dry, cool conditions. The course was
generally in good shape, although the fairways were soggy in places from
overnight rain.
We were welcoming back Duncan Lee after a prolonged stay in U.K., and he
promptly abused his welcome by romping home with 40 points! John Graham took
second place on a count back ahead of Roger Privett, who faded on the back
nine after scoring an impressive 22 points on the front nine.
We also had the pleasure of the company of the boss of The Ranch, khun Buff
(who was playing only his third game of the year) yet he managed to secure a
near pin prize, which earned the biggest cheer of the evening at the
presentation
1st Duncan Lee (15) 40pts
2ndJohn Graham (9) 36pts
3rd Roger Privett (17) 36ps
Near Pins: Dave Keats, Geoff Parker, John Graham and Buff Stuart.
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society, who now play
out of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station, and
almost opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play three times per week on Mondays,
Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but
competitive golf competition why not come and join us.
We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new
players are always welcome. Contact “Buff” on 086 046 5091 or 080 605 5663

Walkley comes up trumps
PSC golf from Siam Country Resort
Tuesday, Sept. 10,
Bangpra - Stableford
On Tuesday we journeyed to Bangpra to take on the
course from the white tees at a tick under 6,500 yards. The layout was in
good condition, with the greens being hard and fast, especially downhill.
Owen Walkley.
Coming to terms best with the course was
Owen Walkley (14) who fired a respectable 35 points to finish ahead of
Martin Hayes (13), who edged Brian Maddox (21) on count back 17/13 after
both signed for 30 points.
Near pins were shared between Paddy & Brian.
Thursday, Sept. 12,
Pattana - Stableford
Thursday saw us visit Pattana, with the B& C
combination our test of the day. Despite our organisor’s best efforts to get
a good deal for our golfers, circumstances conspired to provide a poor
turnout for a good course. Given the below par turnout we decided to not
have a formal competition, with our low markers playing from the blue tees
at 7100+ yards for the challenge while others played matchplay from the
whites at a still challenging 6700 yards. A good day was had as the rain
stayed away until after completion of the round.
Note: Siam Country Resort, Restaurant & Bar is located just off Siam Country
Club Rd, after going under the arch past the 7/11, turn right after 50
metres, with the venue on the left another 200 metres along. Golf from here
is generally played on Tuesday & Thursday, with the Resort hosting prompt
presentations on both days. As a PSC affiliated venue we welcome ALL
golfers, including Ladies & Seniors who have opted for the “Silver” tee
option. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you
there, cheers & good golfing!

It’s a Viking invasion
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
Sunday winners Freddy Starbeck
and Don Lehmer with Lewiinski’s golf manager Colin Davis (left).
Sunday, Sept. 8, Green Valley - Monthly
Medal
A Flight
1st Freddy Starbeck (14) net 68
2nd Dave Driscoll (15) net 69
3rd Clinton Hazlett (8) net 70
B Flight
1st Don Lehmer (20) net 70
2nd Pierre Bietry (16) net 71
3rd Eddy Beilby (19) net 71
Near Pins: No 4 Dave Driscoll, No 9 Mark Robinson, No 12 Jez Lees, No 16
Vic Hester
It seems he receives a compliment every week for his ever improving play, and
there is no reason that should not continue as Freddy ‘Star-struck’ put the lead
crystal glass, emblematic of Lewiinski’s monthly medal, on his shelf. As all our
readers will know, Freddy also gets his name etched on the Lewiinski’s wall of
shame and an invitation to the year-end Gold Medal.
Christian Boysen.
Freddy took out this month’s medal by clearing his A Flight
mates Dave Driscoll (net 69) and the pair of Clinton Hazlett and ‘Broad more’
Bob Newell both locked on 70’s; Bob’s no-score on the 18th hole proving fatal to
him in the resulting count back.
B Flight was led home by Don ‘the ladies man’ Lehmer with a impressive net 70.
Don was followed up the podium steps by two fine players, Pierre Bietry and Eddy
‘the Eagle’ Beilby. Pierre prevailed in the count back as he had the better
mathematics on inward nine.
John Bhang, Vic Hester and Chris Davison shared the 2’s pot.
Tuesday, Sept. 10, Laem Chabang A & B - Stableford
A Flight
1st JJ Harney (13) 38pts
2nd John Pierrel (11) 38pts
B Flight
1st Christian Boysen (27) 40pts
2nd Freddy Starbeck (14) 40pts
The already courageous lot that turn up whenever the impeccable Laem Chabang is
on offer were further emboldened when presented with the easiest of permutations
of the nines, Mountain A and Lake B. Notwithstanding their zeal, the course
showed its teeth to all save the society’s two Vikings in B Flight and the two
podium winners of A.
Christian Boysen and Freddy Starbeck shared the men of the match honors and the
B Flight top spots with 40 sparkling points each; the count back falling in
Christians favor. Christian has now amassed 92 points in 2 of his last 3 outings
with the society, as Freddy with Sunday’s monthly medal under his belt made it
two on the trot.
A Flight not to be outdone had its own count back drama with JJ Harney and
podium regular John Pierrel locked on 38 point returns. JJ maths added up the
better and he also shared the 2’s pot with Hans Stoffell.
Wednesday, Sept. 11, St. Andrews – Stableford
A Flight
1st Kevin Rogers (11) 39pts
2nd Bill Winslow (4) 35pts
3rd Hans Stoffal (12) 35pts
B Flight
1st Jean LaRouche (16) 38pts
2nd Freddy Starbeck (14) 37pts
3rd Nick Shaw (16) 36pts
C Flight
1st Jimmy Day (18) 40 pts
2nd Christian Boysen (27) 37pts
3rd Marlene Prudden (23) 35pts
It has its detractors, but St Andrews provides a marvelous test and enhances the
golf diversity of the Eastern Seaboard. The society doesn’t play it often,
perhaps not often enough, but a fine field was willing to take on the challenge.
A three flight field was led by C Flight Co. Wicklow man Jimmy ‘good’ Day who
had a fine 40 points that earned Jimmy the man of the match. Half of the title
guys took the silver as Denmark’s Christian Boysen came in three shots back and
Australian belle Marlene Prudden rounded out the flight.
In the senior flight it was Aussie Kevin Rogers sitting atop the podium with a
very creditable 39 points. Kevin was four clear of the trio of Bill Winslow and
Hans Stoffal, who took the silver and bronze in that order, and pay window
regular John Pierrel, who was surprisingly left out in the cold.
The top spot in B Flight went to Canadian Jean LaRouche with 38 points. Freddy
‘Star struck’ completed the Danish Viking double act as his 37 points filled the
silver spot. Nick ‘Elvis’ Shaw and Tore Eliassen were locked on even par rounds
but it was Nick who hit the right notes as Tore joined John in the cold.
Brian Prudden split a healthy 2’s pot with Bob Newell.
Friday, Sept. 11, Crystal Bay B & C - Stableford
1st Christian Boysen (27) 42pts
2nd Freddy Starbeck (17) 37pts
3rd John Stewart (8) 36pts
The Danish sandbagger twins Christian Boysen and Freddy ‘Star struck’ were at it
again on the B & C nines of Crystal Bay as they were the only two players to
better their handicaps on the day (only kidding about the sandbagger twins).
Christian’s 42 point walloping was 5 clear of pal Freddy’s score and Christian
has now had two wins and a second place finish this week,
The bad luck story of the day was John Stewart’s solid even par round that was
good only for the bronze.
Les Cobban scooped the 2’s pot.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya land Soi 1, Beach Rd Soi13/13 near
Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and add your name to
the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

O’Keefe on fire at Khao Kheow
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
(From left) Mark
McDonald, Ian Heddle, Eddy Beilby, John Fitzgerald and John Stafford.
Wednesday, Sept. 11, Khao Kheow -
Stableford
Thirteen Outbackers travelled up to Khao Kheow to play the B & C loops off
the white tees due to all the rain we had the previous night.
This was the first time we had played here for quite some time and it was
nice to play on the re-opened B nine. The course in my opinion seemed in
good shape and the speed of the greens varied between 8.5 on B and 10.5 on
C, so the putting took a few holes to get the feel for; however there is
still quite a bit of GUR around generally but this didn’t really interfere
with one’s game.
The staff were very pleased to see us again and depending on the feedback
from today’s players we will consider putting this course back on our
schedule.
John O’Keefe put Monday’s poor round behind him and came out with all guns
blazing, scoring a magnificent 44 points to win by one from another
astonishing score of 43 from Aussie visitor Jim Graham. More
characteristically for this course, Geoff Stimpson was third with 37 ahead
of Andy Makara on 35 in fourth.
Finally, we said goodbye today to Barney who enjoyed his extended stay in
Thailand and I have a funny feeling it won’t be too long before he returns.
There were two ‘2’s from Geoff Stimpson (B8) and Andy Makara (C3).
1st John O’Keefe (14) 44pts
2nd Jim Graham (34) 43pts
3rd Geoff Stimpson (8) 37pts
4th John Fitzgerald (19) 35pts
Wednesday, Sept. 11, Siam Plantation - Stableford
A field of three groups (11 PAX) played on the C & A
nines of this cracking course and a level par 36pts from Chris Playforth was
not enough to earn anything better than sixth place. Two more players,
another Chris (Smart) and Rick Forrest both scored 39’s and even they missed
a podium place, although it was on count back.
Tony Pike won the day with 42pts playing off 9, with course specialists
Rosco & NY Steve both firing gross 81’s, 41 and 39pts respectively, to take
second and third.
Finally, and just to put the icing on the cake from this quality field,
there were four ‘2’s from Rosco, Chris Smart & Mark Riggall (8th) and Steve
Poznanski (12th).
1st Tony Pike (9) 42pts
2nd Rosco Langoulant (14) 41pts
3rd Steve Poznanski (12) 39pts
4th Chris Smart (29) 39pts
Friday, Sept. 13, Green Valley - Stableford
Heavy overnight rain deterred a few golfers from
playing at Green Valley this morning but with one or two late entrants and
omissions, 30 Outbackers took to the park. In spite of continuing showers
all around, very little actually fell at Green Valley. Otherwise the course
was in its usual good shape.
The two low markers, Ian Heddle (3) and Mark McDonald (4), demonstrated
their golfing prowess and just why their handicaps are what they are, with
an excellent 38pts apiece, Ian beating Mark on count back - 73 and 74 gross
respectively. Steady John O’Keefe took third place with 34.
The other end of the field, Div C, is where the top scores came from: two
40-pointers from our Aussie visitors Jim Graham, beating his friend Chris
Van Hausen on count back, with Burapha regular Bob Lindborg in third on 38.
However, Jim and Chris will find themselves playing off lower handicaps on
Monday.
Ken Hole, who has been struggling with his golf, was delighted to win Div B
on 39pts, his best round for some time, with Eddy Beilby (36) second and
John Stafford (35) third.
There were six ‘2’s from Ken Hole (4th), Ian Heddle, Joe Mooneyham & John
Fitzgerald (12th), John another on the 9th and Suzi Lawton on the 16th.
Div A (0-14)
1st Ian Heddle (3) 38pts
2nd Mark McDonald (4) 38pts
3rd John O’Keefe (13) 34pts
Div B (15–19)
1st Ken Hole (17) 39pts
2nd Eddy Beilby (19) 36pts
3rd John Stafford (15) 35pts
Div C (20+)
1st Jim Graham (33) 40pts
2nd Chris Van Hausen (25) 40pts
3rd Bob Lindborg (20) 38pts

Taddei on top form shoots 42-pointer
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Tuesday’s winners and runners-up.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, Sept. 10, Bangpra – Stableford
Some players have good taste as shown by the fact that the list
for the day was over full. Still, a packed morning at Bert’s saw all on
transport to the course and a little later we were all there.
After a nice and quick book-in off we went and the course was in fine
condition. We noticed as we played the first that the green looked good, and
we were to find as we went around that all the greens were very fast and
really tricky. This was seen by most as a bit of a problem, including the
scribe who went on a blitz of three-putting.
I am told, having not seeing many, that the fairways were in good condition
and I can attest that the walk was great. I can also say that the rough was
really difficult to get out of; it seemed to grab the club as it went
through and the ball went wherever it felt fit.
Alan Taddei.
With the fast greens, the tough rough and a hot and humid
day I could envisage some low scores, if my card was anything to go by. This
was probably not helped by the fact that all par 3’s were over 180 yards,
very tough!
Back at Bert’s it was soon time for the results and in the A Flight, 0 to
18, we had a three-way count back on 33 points with Mashi Kaneta in first
place was, Trevor Davis in second and Tom Herrington third.
In the B Flight Barry Oats won the day with 39 points, a street ahead of
Barry Elphick in second on 31 points and Rita Zoebeli took third with 28.
Near Pins: Walter Baechli, Barry Oats, Barry Elphick, Max Scott.
Long Putt: Don Carmody, Mashi Kaneta.
Friday, Sept. 13, Crystal Bay - Stableford
This venue is always a favourite with the players at Tropical
Bert’s and it was a happy group of golfers who gathered early this morning.
The trip down there was very slow, probably being Friday morning, but we
still just made it on time.
After a quick change we teed off more or less on time into a growing wind.
Also there were no carts allowed on the fairways and when this happens I
usually try to get a ‘chubby’ caddie and let her drive. Amazing if you
drive, how it is always “No Fairway”, but as expected on this day my nice
caddie was a little lax on the ruling.
Walter Baechli & Dick Warberg.
The ground was actually not too bad considering it had
poured it down the night before, so we got along for a few holes very well.
Then it rained and rained, so the bag covers went on and we tried to plough
on before finally having to stop in a rest stand. In fact we stopped a
couple of times as the rain kept up most of the rest of the day. Still, we
had planned for it because we knew the course was going to be wet and soggy,
so we played off the ‘Mickey Mouse’ tees. The only players who were a bit
upset at the end were the ‘Silver’ tees players, still, you can’t win them
all.
Back at Bert’s it was soon time for the results. In the A Flight, 0 to 17,
the winner was Alan Taddei with 42 points ahead of a count back for second
that was won by Maurice Roberts on 40 points ahead of Mark West in third.
In the B Flight the winner was Walter Baechli with 39 points ahead of Dick
Warberg in second on count back. In third was Nigel Perry with 38 points
ahead of Derek Brook and Joel Flor on count back.
The night still being young we then partook of a couple of ‘cold one’s’.

Near Pins: Alan Taddei, Don Carmody (2), Mashi Kaneta

Chatt sparkles at Crystal Bay
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Monday, Sept. 9, Crystal Bay –
Stableford
We were allocated the C and A courses today as
the B was closed and the cut in division 1 was 6 -16 and 21+ in division 2.
We were playing off the whites today at 6450 yards and in division 1 there
were some remarkable scores.
Wichai Tannunsorn.
At the presentation back at Siam Cats a
remarkable 33 points was discovered to be the lowest score in the top
division. With 17 points on the front nine on the C course and 24 on the
back nine, Mike Chatt won division 1 with 41 points. Lindsay Phillips scored
17 and 21 to finish second and Kari Kuparinen, playing off 6, was third with
37.
Poor old Billy Fitzgerald and Terry Madsen were in tears after scoring 36
points each and not making it into the winners’ enclosure today.
Andy Crabb topped division 2 with 38 points, beating who? yes, count back
Burnie Sinclair 17/16, and Fred Temminck was third with 33 points.
Bryan Rought birdied C4 for the only ‘2’ in division 1 and there were four
rollovers to Pattana in division 2.
Near pins went to Mike Chatt, Lindsay Phillips, Bryan Rought, Harry
Vincenzi, Glenn King, Burnie Sinclair and Fred Temminck.
Wednesday, Sept. 11, Pattana - Stableford
As we all arrived and wandered down to the
starter’s desk we were told the A course was shut today and could we please
start off the B, not everyone’s favourite starting hole with the water
running up both sides of the fairway. Yet again there were a few murmurs on
the first tee as to which tee to play from for both divisions and we
selected the white tees. It was ‘pick clean and place’ on the fairways and
fringe due to the heavy rain here overnight.
Tony Thorne.
After the round back in the clubhouse we
got together and discussed the tee placements on a few of the courses we
play, and our thoughts are that in future division 1 will play one from the
back and division 2 two from the black or blue tees, but this will probably
be only on 3/4 courses, more thoughts to be discussed.
In his last game before a five week trip with his beloved to Down Under,
Lindsay Phillips won division 1 with 36 points ahead of Kari Kuparinen in
second on 33.
Eiichi Matsumoto beat Rod Howett on a 16/15 back nine count back to win
division 2 after they both came in with 31 points each.
Terry Madsen birdied the second on the C course for the only 2 in division 1
and there were more rollovers in division 2 to Bangpra on Monday.
Friday, Sept. 13, Eastern Star - Stableford
As we passed Buddha Mountain on our way to the
course the clouds in the distance looked really threatening and as we turned
on to the 332 the heavens opened. The heavy rain continued until we reach
the clubhouse and the thoughts were, shall we play today. But we all got
changed, the rain stopped and the skies cleared so we all booked in for our
green fees and a normal round of golf with no cancellations.
Division 1 today was 6-15 and 16 + in division 2 and ‘pick, clean and place’
was implemented from the first tee onwards and this was needed throughout
the round with sodden patches and worm casts on the majority of the
fairways.
Wichai Tannunsorn recorded the best score of the day, winning division 1
with 36 points. Marty Rock was second with 33 points and Karl Flood took
third one point behind.
Frank Kelly was the winner in division 2 with 35 points, with Roar Berger
second on 34 and in his last round for 4 weeks, Paul Hartley captured third
with 32.
Coming in from China, David Daz birdied the 6th hole for the only ‘2’ in
division 2 while a rollover ensued in division 1 to next Friday.
Near pins went to Wichai Tannunsorn, Tony Thorne, David Daz and Ian Walsh
(2).

A pop group week
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, Sept. 9, Mountain Shadow –
Stableford
CSS 71
1st Vincent Gras (18) 38pts
2nd Frank Dunstan (28) 38pts
3rd Phil Groves (8) 37pts
4th Hal Hart (20) 37pts
5th Markku Tynell (22) 35pts
With all the recent wet weather it was expected that the course would be
extremely wet, if not waterlogged, but it turned out to be a very
pleasant surprise to find that, with the judicious use of a ‘lift and
place’ in the fairways rule, it was in fact in very good shape as
attested by the scores and the CSS for the day reducing to 71.
Frank Dunstan.
Vincent Gras was back again for a day prior to
heading north to Khao Yai, to get in some extra practice and did even
better by winning the day after a close count back over Frank Dunstan
with a better 20 to Frank’s 18. Frank had his best round for several
months, although those previous rounds were all in Australia where, it
is reported, the conditions were much more difficult, and when added to
a private lesson just prior to departure for “the Land of Smiles” it all
made a huge difference.
Phil Groves also had to win a count back for third place, which he duly
did with a better 14 to 11 over the last six holes after tying the back
nine with Hal Hart at 18 apiece, which left Hal in fourth.
Markku Tynell took fifth, almost playing to handicap after returning
from Europe where golf was not on the activity list.
Even with the very good scores and conditions there were no ‘2’s in
either division.
Prior to the presentations there were welcome backs for Markku Tynell
and Vincent Gras, the latter attempting to lay claim to the most miles
travelled to work each year.
Wednesday, Sept. 11, Khao Kheow B & C - Stableford
CSS 75
1st Frank Dunstan (28) 35pts
2nd Shuichi Kodaka (17) 33pts
3rd Bruce Hilde (17) 32pts
4th Markku Tynell (22) 32pts
5th Mike Dabanovich (12) 30pts
6th Phil Groves (8) 29pts
Following the hiatus caused by the condition of the A course, and now
that the B course is back in operation following extensive repair and
renovation, the group have now put Khao Kheow back on the schedule as
promised. There was a unanimous agreement that it was a very good
decision even though it would have appeared not to be the case by the
scores on the day. These were adversely affected by the very wet
conditions compounded by a stiff breeze that blew throughout the day.
Russell Exley.
Once again Frank Dunstan’s investment in some golf
instruction paid dividends as following his second place in the previous
outing he added a win with a return that was two better than the second
placed player. With the CSS moving out to 75 it netted Frank an
additional reduction in handicap to tack on to the last adjustment.
Shuichi Kodaka took second place with a good round that started out with
little promise as he took a zero pointer on the first but finished up
good enough to just beat out the chasers by a single point.
Bruce Hilde managed to squeeze onto the podium in his last competition
prior to returning to The USA to polish up his act in preparation for
his expected call up for “Dancing with the Stars”, as he won a count
back over Markku Tynell for third with a better 17 to 16.
Mike Dabanovich just got the better of Phil Groves by a point after the
latter just scrapped together 12 on the inward half after a promising
beginning to the day.
Once again there were no 2’s in the second division but Phil Groves
slotted one at last in the first division to clear out the quintuple
rollover pot on the signature 8th on the B course and almost make the
day worthwhile.
Back at The Haven there were welcomes for new members Alan Richardson,
Ian Goldschmidt and Simon Rosam together with a fond farewell for Bruce
Hilde who will surely be sorely missed by his fans who have known him as
the dancing entertainer to the masses along Walking Street during the
past few weeks.
Friday, Sept. 13,
The Emerald - Stableford
CSS 71
1st Russell Exley (9) 38pts
2nd Brian Libbey (9) 38pts
3rd Kevin Townsend (12) 38pts
4th Trevor Schirmer (12) 36pts
5th Frank Dunstan (28) 35pts
6th John Carlin (15) 34pts
Having rained almost continuously the previous night it was expected
that the day’s golf would be difficult at the very least and quite
possibly extremely arduous, but those fears were soon put aside as the
course was found to be in good shape and playing well with the provision
of a local ‘lift and place’ in the fairways rule.
Vincent Gras.
Indeed the CSS went down to 71 for the day as the
majority of the low handicappers scored well to underline the conditions
of the day with little wind and overcast skies, which had made for a
very pleasant day’s golf.
Russell Exley returned after resting away from golf altogether for a
couple of months to win the day after winning a three-way count back
between other members of his fourball with the fourth member of the
group placing fourth.
Russell’s 21 points were just sufficient to see off the close challenges
of Brian Libbey, who finished with 20 in second place, and Kevin
Townsend’s 18 in third place as he closed out the round with five points
on the last two holes to Kevin’s four and Brian’s three.
Trevor Schirmer could have been in the hunt and possibly the winner
except that he managed just two points from the last two holes, three
putting them both after good approach shots left him with birdie
chances, but in the end he had to settle for fourth spot and memories of
a great day of competitive golf amongst friends.
Frank Dunstan could not match the fireworks of the leading group but
still managed to get on the podium for the third time in the week with
another close to handicap (at least the old one) round that saw him
place fifth as John Carlin returned from Sydney to take sixth just one
shot behind.
Before the presentations were made there were welcome backs for John
Carlin, Brian Libbey and Russell Exley together with special welcome
backs to the victorious Khao Yai raiding party in the form of Hal Hart,
who had been the winner at seven under and second placed man Vincent
Gras at four under, with both having since had their handicaps reduced
on those results.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact
mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13,
between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is
arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should
be there by 8.15 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days that you
wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be found on our web
site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Fitzgerald in sparkling form at Emerald
PSC golf from I-Rovers
Tuesday, Sept. 10, Phoenix Lake &
Mountain - Strokeplay
You’ve got to love Phoenix - a top quality golf course just
20 minutes drive from central Pattaya. The course here is great with
perfect fairways and fast, true greens. We turned up today a little bit
early and were able to tee off ahead of schedule.
Leigh Paxton.
I don’t know what has happened to the standard of our
golf lately, most of us had been playing to or better than handicap for
a while, but lately it’s just been rubbish, and I think I’m the worst
offender.
Today we welcomed back Rob from Wales and Henry who has been spending a
lot of time in Buriram. Both guys were a little rusty but otherwise
played well.
Really not sure who was the winner today; the scores were fairly poor
all round but we will give the best result to Leigh Paxton (hcp 30).
Leigh played well and got very close to his handicap.
Just a short side note, as we were buying drinks today at the first hole
we were told that Phoenix has a new policy that you need to buy vouchers
to purchase drinks and food around the course. You can only buy these
vouchers in 100 baht lots, being to the value of 10 baht each. You can
also buy extra vouchers around the course if required. We were told it
was for cash control around the course! I don’t really see the benefit
as each shop around the course was still holding cash to sell the
vouchers.
The catch to the new system comes when you finish your round with a
pocket full of vouchers left over. They do not cash the vouchers back
in, that’s just bad luck for you. Trying to be good hearted, I gave my
extra vouchers to my caddie on top of her tip, she looked at me and
said, “what am I going to do with these? I can’t cash them in either.”
Sorry Phoenix, no one in my group liked your new system.
Happy golfing!

Player cans an ‘ace’
The Billabong Bar Golf Society
Wednesday’s top two - Darl
White & Noodle Russell.
Monday, Sept. 9, Bangpra -
Stableford
With a field of three groups playing at Bangpra today we got off a
bit early and were around in just on four hours. The course was in
fantastic condition with greens like greased lightning. The scribe had a
putt from about 15 inches away and only touched the ball but finished up
with a six foot second putt.
One golfer never needed his putter as he holed out for an ace on the
twelfth. We heard the commotion from the 13th Tee but unfortunately
didn’t see the ball go in, however we were caught up in the celebrations
later on. Fantastic! John Player will remember this day out for a while
to come and thank you very much from all who were there for the bell
ring.
The scores were not so great with only two players beating 30 points, so
only first and second were paid out today. Waldo Blazsanyik took first
place with a fine 36 points and John Player got second with 31.
Fortunately there were no ‘2’s as John had taken the prize already!
Wednesday, Sept. 11, Green Valley - Stableford
The ever-popular Green Valley was our venue for
today, and with nine groups playing it was off as soon as we could get
going. This course is in great condition at the moment and the greens
were in good shape also today.
We welcomed a couple of new faces to the Billabong for this outing,
David Evans over from the old dart plus Ian Chipman and Don Wilson from
NZ.
It turned out to be a very good day weather wise as there was no rain,
even though it did threaten for a while. The scoring was excellent with
only a few players under 30 points and most of the field were in the mid
30’s with all the placings going to count backs.
Capt. Bob (right)
congratulates John Player on his hole in one at Bangpra.
The winner today was Darl White with
38 points on a count back over Noodle Russell, who by the way took Darl
and Phil Elliott to the cleaners on the course. Third place went to
Brian Maddox with 37 points on a count back over Mark McDonald who took
forth ahead of Neil Carter.
There were two 2s today coming from Brian Maddox and Noodle Russell.
Friday, Sept. 13, Plutaluang - Stableford
Playing the Navy today was a bit slow but there
was no rain to speak of even though it tried hard a few times. With only
a small group it was easy to get everyone away on time and there were
some good scores out there today as the course played pretty easy, if
you were on the fairway that is. The back nine seemed to be the easiest
though as the scores were terrific with the winners scoring 22, 21 and
25 points respectively on the south course.
With all the rain they have had the course was in remarkable condition
and the greens as usual were lightning fast. Darl White and Bob Philp
came first and third, in that order and had cleaned up against JJ Harney
and Waldo. Standing on the 18th tee JJ was heard to say double the lot
on the last hole, so they did have something to play for and he won it
with a birdie.
Winner today in the stableford comp was Darl White with a great 41
points, beating Owen Walkley also 41 on a count back with 22 points to
Owens 21. In third was Bob Philp with 37 points, getting 25 points on
the back nine.
Note: The Billabong Golf Bar is just off Siam Country Club Road looking
straight down Lake Mabprachan. For information about golf trips, call

1st Jim McGovern (16) 39pts
2nd Mike Phillips (10) 38pts
3rd Alain Taddei (17) 37 points
Wednesday, Sept. 11, Treasure Hill - Stableford
Another smallish group of 8 players assemble on
Wednesday to tackle the Treasure Hill course which is currently undergoing major
reconstruction work.
Derek Wilkin was a surprised winner with just 21 points as he finished one up on
Clive Bruce in second.
1st Derek Wilkin (20) 28pts
2nd Clive Bruce (10) 27pts
Friday, Sept. 13, Green Valley – Stableford
We had a group of 16 players on Friday with Green
Valley the venue of choice. Brian Orr had a superb round of 45 points to whip
the field by 9 clear. Don Wilson and Vincent Smyth battled for second, both on
36 points but Don edged it on count back. Peter Henderson completed the podium
one point further back.
1st Brian Orr (16) 45pts
2nd Don Wilson (25) 36pts
3rd Vincent Smyth (12) 36pts
4th Peter Henderson (18) 35pts

Gawron’s day at Green Valley
The Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
The Pattaya Golf Society visited Green
Valley on Monday, 9th September, to play a stableford competition on the
course which was richly prepared but soft after recent rains and a heavy sky
promised more of the same before the round was completed.
So it was after about six holes the heavens opened and the already slowish
greens became slower. However the day brightened and scores improved with
Masashi Iizumi joining Kevin Cumming on 34 points for a share of second
place. The winner, making it two in a row, was Greg Gawron with 36 points.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the Booby Bevy went to Bryan Barrell after his
blistering front nine of twenty points hit the buffers and ended up as a
mediocre 28 points.
It had been a good start to the week and good golf comradeship continues
with the Pattaya Golf Society.
It’s that man again...
Wednesday, 11th September saw the Pattaya Golf Society visit Bangpra to play
a stableford competition on a course which was in good condition, if a
little soft, and with very quick greens. Always a pleasure to play, on this
occasion the course was virtually empty for the first hour or so, except for
the local wildlife and excellent progress was made.
Scores were moderate and Wichai Tananusorn returned 32 for third place with
the day’s best gross of 83. In second was stalwart Ken Grimes with 33
points, augmented by the day’s only birdie ‘2’, on the eighth. The winner,
again, was Greg Gawron, this time posting 37 points.
Rabbi’s non-winners beer went to Bryan Brown and the Booby Bevy went to Mr
Len - as he was sorting out his bag at the exit from the locker room a new
ProV1 fell from his glove and rolled tantalizingly down the hill and along
the footbridge before eventually ricocheting off a post into the water. It
had not even been struck in anger. Yes, one of those days again at Bangpra!
Brilliant Bartley blitzes the field
Phoenix Members Golf Society
Tuesday’s winners pose with staff at The Relax
Bar.
Mike Gerrard
Yes it was that man again John Bartley who came up trumps on the
big day, Tuesday, Sept. 10 which saw KPK Food Services sponsor the main
prize by way of a voucher to spend in their retail outlet near Pattaya
Klang.
John scored a remarkable 41 points to claim first place and take the
voucher, with his nearest rival Bob Neylon on only 34 points in second
place. In third was Joris Goetschalckx, also with 34 points but with an
inferior back nine holes, and in fourth place was Patrick Browne with
33.
Near pins were won by Bob Neylon (2), and Richard Baldwin (2).
The lucky draw prize (free massage) went to Rodney Gregg and the free
drink went to Maurice Guiney, with the 50 baht consolation prize being
claimed by Bill Hewitt (or should I say Samorn).
As usual our hosts The Relax Bar served us all well including donating
the lucky draw prizes. Our big thanks go to them for their wonderful
service and deals they afford us every time we play.

Playforth takes the win at Bangpra
Travellers Rest Golf Group
Andy Rich
A week of cloudy skies and the odd downpour seemed to dampen the spirits of
the TRGG faithful, plus the fact that, coincidentally, a high number of
patrons seem to have chosen the middle of September to head back home to
catch up with the relatives. Anyway, the reduced numbers took their toll and
the golf outings were reduced to just two days last week.
Monday, Sept. 9, Bangpra - Stableford
On the steamy Monday morning the remaining golfing addicts of the
TRGG headed off to the monkey course at Bangpra to do battle. Now I find
Bangpra to be a bit of an enigma. It is in a fine setting and well
maintained and although nobody would describe it as an easy course, with
many wide open fairways it does not on first appearances look over
difficult. Mind you, all the par threes are long and far from easy.
Chris Playforth.
Time and again however many a good golfer, and I do not include myself in
this, find it impossible to play to their handicap here. Whatever club you
take to reach a green it is never enough and you always come up short. I
have a theory that the monkeys have been out changing all the distance
markers around and are sitting around laughing at us.
This past week was no exception with a number of our better golfers leaving
the course scratching their heads and wondering how they could play so
badly. Only one player, Chris Playforth, managed to play to anything like
his handicap and it was good enough to walk off with the top prize money.
1st Chris Playforth (10) 35pts
2nd Tewin Poopay Lamthong (10) 33pts
3rd Rod Ewan (12) 31pts
Thursday, Sept. 12, Phoenix - Stableford
There was a reasonable turnout on Thursday for our weekly visit
to Phoenix to once again play Mountain and Lakes. Now I am beginning to hear
rumblings of discontent coming from our regulars about Phoenix and it appear
that some are so unhappy with some of the management’s recently introduced
changes they are threatening never to return. I hope the powers that be at
Phoenix know what they are doing otherwise they may find they are in charge
of a white elephant instead of a thriving golf course. Time to start
listening to your customers methinks.
Mod Chaviraksa.
Back to the golf, and it was a return to the ladies ruling the roost as Mod
Chaviraksa had all the men in her pocket once again, although it was a close
run thing with Mod only getting the better of second placed Derek Thorogood
on count back.
1st Mod Chaviraksa (12) 34pts
2nd Derek Thorogood (16) 34pts
3rd Craig Hitchens (11) 33pts
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week and if you would like to
play a round of golf with the TRGG, please phone Fergus Brennan on 086 056
7019 or pop into the Ned Kelly Bar in Soi Lengkee and add your name to the
weekly lists which are posted on the notice board.

Simpson conquers
the weather at Emerald
PSC golf from The Beaver Bar & Grill
Paul Simpson
MInclement weather did not stop the hearty souls of the
Beaver Bar & Grill weekly golfers from taking on Emerald Golf Club on
Friday, Sept. 13. At tee-off time, mild showers greeted each group starting
out but the inclement weather receded as the players progressed through
their rounds.
Emerald Golf Club continues with their reconstructing of their fairways in
front of the greens creating additional challenges for all golfers. Even
with all the hindrances, Paul Simpson carded 38 stableford points to take
top honors, with Jeff Moodie taking second place on 36. Nearest to the pin
was hole 13 with the Beaver Bar winning as all the players missed the green.
\
After golf, all returned to the Beaver Bar &Grill for lunch and
refreshments. Larry wishes to again thank all the players attending.
O’Donnell signs off with a win
PSC golf from Café Kronborg
Hugh O’Donnell.
Wednesday, Sept. 11,
Burapha - Stableford
1st Hugh O’Donnell (33) 30pts
2nd Graham Buckingham (22) 29pts
Burapha C and D loops were the game today and after a quick check-in we set
off on a course that was in fine condition but a little damp from the
previous day’s rain. The greens looked to the eye to be fast but in fact
they were very slow. We had a fast round of 4 hours, even though the carts
were not allowed on the fairways today.
A welcome went out to Andrew Krawiac from Sydney, Australia and now living
in Chiang Mai, and we also said goodbye to Hugh O’Donnell ,off to Spain and
the USA but returning in November.
Scoring was very hard but Hugh O’Donnell, 83 years young, was the winner
with 30 points with Graham Buckingham in second one point behind.
Dundon delivers once more
PSC golf from The Golf Club
Steve Ellison
Monday, Sept. 9, Green Valley (white tees) –
Stableford
1st Jimmy Dundon (15) 36pts
2nd Muffy Kerr (12) 35pts
3rd Henry O’Brien (18) 34pts
After winning the scramble at Khao Kheow last month, Jimmy Dundon has been
playing some of his best golf recently. Today was no exception and Dundon
once again played the best of a field of 20 and was also the only golfer to
shoot his handicap. He is down to a 15 handicap now and he is still able to
deliver the clutch shots as required. Great shootin’ Jim!
Jimmy Dundon back at The Golf
Club.
Muffy Kerr (you know, Ty and Jason’s Dad!) was dressed in
his usual spectacular Loudmouth fashion and came away a shot behind with 35
on the card for sole second. The famous Scotsman Henry O’Brien who is also
no stranger to the podium took third yet another shot behind with 34 to
complete the trio of champions.
Nice job lads and thanks also to John Emmerson for running the show while
Cap’t Phil takes a well deserved holiday back home in Oz!
Wednesday, Sept. 11, Kabinburi (yellow tees) – Stableford
1st Hal Hart (20) 43pts
2nd Vincent Gras (16) 35pts
Thursday, Sept. 12, Kabinburi (white & yellow tees) –
Stableford
1st Bill Gneiting (12) 37pts
2nd Masao Ishikawa (16) 36pts
Time for a road trip and at 08:30 Wednesday morning we all piled into the
van to take the 2 hour 15 minute drive up the 331 to Kabinburi. This is a
great destination for an overnighter as the golf course has really improved
over the last 4 years and the hotel, of course, is superb. Those of us who
brought a guest were treated to a 1-bed suite room upgrade. Thanks Kantary!
It was a bit wet underfoot, but that is to be expected anywhere in Thailand
and will remain that way for the next 4-5 weeks I am sure. The golf course
was in great condition so the first day we played off the yellow tees and at
just over 6,200 yards it was about right. We had a rain delay for about 30
minutes which cooled things off and cleared away for the rest of the round.
Home on the Range, up at the
Kabinburi Sports Club.
There was one guy who had a great round of 40 stableford
points, and that was Vincent Gras. In those wet conditions, that is a fine
round of golf that deserves a win. But golf is a cruel game, and just when
you think all is good, there is someone else who has had an even better day.
With an astonishing 43 points and playing off 20, Hal Hart was the man of
the trip as he and his moustache walked away with the gold.
After the round, we headed back to the Kantary Hotel where the lads were
treated to a free-flow wine and cheese party by the poolside as some had a
swim and others had a Jacuzzi to pound out those worn out muscles. It was a
great atmosphere and a relaxing break from our hectic lifestyle in Pattaya.
The next morning we headed back to the golf course, which is just 12 clicks
down the 33 for the second round of the journey. Some of the boys hit the
white tees, and at 6652 yards, it was Billy “the Kid” Gneiting who prevailed
with 37 points on the card while Masao “Ishi” Ishikawa took first place in
the yellow tee gang.
Thanks to all who joined us and we will be returning to Kabinburi in October
so drop by and sign up for this great getaway that includes 2 green fees,
5-star hotel and breakfast for 2 all for just 2,900 baht and ladies go free!
Thanks to TGC partner John McHugh for herding the cats!

Golfnutter: Sport’s moral high ground – Does it exist?
Cristiano Ronaldo for Manchester United v AC
Milan – 9.75?
To watch professional footballers “diving”, whether it be the EPL,
Champions League or FIFA World Cup, is to conclude the game is short on
scruples. Here we have players feigning injury, allegedly through
illegal contact from an opposing player, in order to influence the
referee to award a penalty. This ruse, which rarely receives punishment,
is frequently rewarded.
The professional rugby player who has won more international acclaim
than any other – All Black skipper Richie McCaw – has, depending upon
which team you support, built his reputation upon infringing the rules
of the game more successfully than any of his opponents.
In the first test of the recently completed Ashes Series, English
batsman Stuart Broad played and nicked a ball that was caught by the
Australian slips cordon. But Broad, who would later admit to knowing he
had nicked it, emulated the majority of today’s batsmen by refusing to
walk. Having stayed his ground he went on to score a further 26 runs – a
telling factor given Australia finished just 14 runs from target.
Wide acceptance of illicit drug use within other sports, such as cycling
and athletics, are well known. The Armstrongs and the Johnsons simply
did what many of their peers were doing – victory being too important to
jeopardise.
The issue being highlighted is not about what these players did. Rather,
it is that such actions are, or were accepted as part and parcel of that
sport at that time. That such action is regarded as normal implies
something about the core values of that particular sport, particularly
so if it means the difference between winning and losing. The ethos
“Winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing,” is alive and well.
When I first started playing competitive golf in Pattaya, I remember
being quite taken with observing how the many different types of golfer
actually got on. It seemed to me that no matter one’s nationality,
skill-level, age or gender the chances of having a bloody good day out
playing golf was high. The fact that not everyone in the playing group
spoke English didn’t seem to matter one jot, and nor did it detract from
the sense of camaraderie enjoyed by all during post-round drinks. Which
has caused me to wonder; is there any other sporting environment where
such a mini-UN happens so often and so successfully?
One of the keys underpinning the success of Pattaya golf is the respect
that most participants have for not only the game, but also its rules,
its customs and its legacy. Matters golf transcend nationalities and
cultures to the extent that most of us know what can and cannot be done,
wherever we are from.
That golf forms the cornerstone of a reasonably large community –
resident and visitor – here in Pattaya, is testament to not just the
game’s international reach, but to its centuries-old requirement that
competitors be their own referee. This, in my humble opinion, is the
underlying reason why the level of respect between golf’s participants
exceeds that of any other sport. It is an underlying reason why
Pattaya’s multi-cultured golfing society succeeds to the degree that it
does.
At one point during the Open Championship of 2003, Nick Faldo was
leading by one shot from little known Brit, Mark Roe. Journeyman Roe and
playing partner Jesper Parnevik had forgotten to exchange cards at the
start of the round, thus mistakenly signing their own cards instead of
each other’s. Result: immediate DQ.
That this tournament would have been 40yo Roe’s finest moment in his
golfing career was recognised by compassionate media who, encouraged by
sympathetic fans, launched a campaign for reinstatement. But Roe
steadfastly refused to comply.
“I would not have played and I would not have wanted to play if they had
overturned the disqualification,” he said. “I wouldn’t ask for a change
in the Rules of Golf.”
And neither would his peers. In this the game is irreproachable.
Players, whether leading professionals or weekend warriors, regard the
Rules as sacrosanct. I cannot think of any other sport where contestants
are so mindful of the letter and spirit of the Rules – such as calling
penalties upon themselves – to the extent golfers are. Now here is the
really telling thing – such action is not regarded as a big deal. Nor do
fellow players mock such honesty. Rather, it is regarded as integral to
the spirit of the game.
Put another way, it is highly unlikely that any golfer playing in
his/her society’s comp this coming week will behave as Stuart Broad did
at Trent Bridge in July.
Whilst not claiming golf deserves to occupy sport’s moral high ground –
still some gender-bias out there – in terms of playing by the rules,
written or implied, it certainly sets a great example. Winning is good,
winning well is way better.
Happy golfing.
Golfnutter.

Bangkok Glass end
United’s winning run
Pattaya United’s Kriangkhai Pimrat (left) battles for
the ball with Bangkok Glass midfielder Peerapong Pichitchotirat during their
Thai Premier League fixture at the Leo Stadium in Bangkok, Saturday, Sept. 14.
Turn to page 59 for a full match report. (Photo courtesy Pattaya United FC)
Pattaya United’s run of three successive victories was
brought to a crashing halt last weekend when they came up against a rampant
Bangkok Glass team at the Leo Stadium in Pathum Thani.
The Glass Rabbits are flying high this season and it only took them only 5
minutes on Saturday to open the scoring against United, when Glass skipper
Teeratep Winothai latched onto a cross from Michelini to volley the ball past
United keeper Kang Bong-jun.
The home team would go on to double their advantage just 4 minutes later, with
Michelini once again playing the role of provider. The Frenchman’s cross was
cleverly played into the path of Namibian striker Lazarus Kaimbi and he made no
mistake from close range to put Glass 2 goals up.
Pattaya barely got out of first gear in the opening half and they could have
gone further behind but for some smart goalkeeping by Kang to deny Tamaphan, and
Winothai then lost his footing when put clean through on goal.
After Kaimbi had squandered another golden chance at the start of the second
half, Glass effectively put the game out of reach in the 51st minute when
Kaikaew volleyed home from 10 yards out.
With the match entering its final minutes, some slack marking in the home
defence allowed Efe Obode to pull a goal back for Pattaya but it proved to be
scant consolation as with virtually the last kick of the game Korakod restored
Glass’s three goal advantage, scoring directly from a free-kick out on the right
hand touchline.
United were left thankful that Chaingrai suffered another defeat last weekend to
leave them trailing Pattaya by 6 points with 2 games in hand as the fight to
stave off relegation reaches its climax.
Pattaya United next take to the field on Sunday, September 22 at home against
Chainat. Kick-off for the match is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Ocean Marina Boat Show to showcase Pattaya as regional sailing hub
Ocean Marina Yacht Club in Pattaya
has been central in the development of the Gulf of Thailand becoming a South
East Asia yachting hub.
Ocean Marina Yacht Club is set to host the second Ocean
Marina Pattaya Boat Show, showcasing the Gulf of Thailand’s marine leisure
industry and underscoring its position as a strategic yachting hub in South East
Asia. To be held 22nd to 24th November at the Ocean Marina Yacht Club in
Na-Jomtien, Pattaya, the event is expected to attract over 100 exhibitors and
3,000 visitors.
Following the successful inaugural event in 2012, organisers are planning for it
to be even bigger and better this year. Already 60% of the in-water display area
is booked and reservations for the 2,600sqm of onshore display space are strong,
with marine businesses, luxury automobile brands and up-market real estate in
the offerings.
“Last year was the first Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show and we received a lot of
positive feedback. We are building on that success and for this year have
expanded the onshore space and re-developed the layout. Bookings have been
strong and we are looking forward to an exciting show for both exhibitors and
visitors,” said Supatra Angkawinijwong, acting managing director, Ocean

The Gulf of Thailand’s close proximity to the South China Sea opens up the area
to yachts from Hong Kong and further north, and south to the Indonesian
archipelago, Australia and New Zealand. The Gulf provides idyllic tropical
cruising with islands dotted off the shore and the untouched waters of Cambodia
and Vietnam on the region’s doorstep.
“This is a popular cruising area due in part to the stunning nearby cruising
grounds and its strategic location in the region, as well as the presence of
world-class marina facilities at Ocean Marina Yacht Club. The Ocean Marina
Pattaya Boat Show will help cement the region’s strategic importance and
showcase what the Gulf of Thailand has to offer, to a worldwide audience,” added
Supatra.
A large turnout of Thais, expats and tourists from neighbouring regions,
lifestyle-lovers, entrepreneurs, investors, boat owners and property owners, as
well as targetted VIPs and media are expected at the 2013 Show to enjoy a
diverse display of products and businesses, including international yacht
brands, marine accessories and services, yacht charter, water sports, automobile
brands, luxury real estate, lifestyle brands and much more.
There are also lots of onshore and on-water activities and entertainment
planned, including free sailing trials, free kayak trials, lucky draws, luxury
cocktail parties, Dragon Boat Race and a marina-side beer garden and festival
with live band.
Ocean Marina Yacht Club has hosted many international events previously,
including the 24th SEA Games, Top of the Gulf Regatta and large-scale concerts
by Grammy, Cool FM and more.

Latvian retains two titles at
Pattaya arm wars championship
Champion arm wrestlers Arturs
Dorohoff (left), winner of two categories, and Suttiwas Kohsamut (right), winner
of the under 75kg event, face off in an exhibition bout during the 10th Pattaya
International Arm Wrestling Championships held at the Royal Garden Plaza last
weekend. 80 strong men from around the world competed for cash and trophies so
big, only the strongest arms could carry them home.

The 10th Pattaya International Arm Wrestling Championship turned into a repeat
of last year’s competition, with Latvia’s Arturs Dorohous and Thailand’s
Suthiwas Kohsamut winning the top prizes on offer.
The 38-year-old Dorohous bested Sergy Kardash, 26, from Russia in the 75-85kg
class and another Russian competitor, Roman Abranov age 35, in the 85kg and up
class during the internationally sanctioned meet at Royal Garden Plaza Sept. 14.
The match attracted more than 80 participants, down from 100 last year, from
China, Russia, Malaysia and elsewhere. All were vying for 250,000 baht in prizes
and the “Steel Wrist King” award.
The contest adhered to international rules set by the Thailand Arm Wrestling
Association. Wrestlers competed in three divisions with the winner of each
taking home 50,000 baht and prizes from Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, and the
Fairtex Sports Complex. Second-place finishers each won 15,000 baht.
Defending champion Suthiwas, 22, prevailed over Malaysia’s Mohamad Hizar in the
under 75kg class to retain the title he won last year.
Royal Garden manager Somporn Naksuetrong noted that the competition has grown
steadily over the years and the winners have moved onto the international stage.
Audience members at the event also enjoyed a show from bodybuilders Tak Pharanyu
and Top Chaiwat, who flexed and tested their own wrist strength in competition.
Somehow, Pattaya’s Deputy Mayor Ronakit Ekasing managed a draw with the burly
Tak.
