Good subject to write about
Editor;
Re: Big ‘Jobs’ for the PILC Book Group (PM Friday, 05 April 2013) - This was
a good article and especially a good subject to write about. Steve Jobs
indeed was an interesting person and doing things “his way” was the only way
for him. The way he had changed the views of marketing, computing, and the
need for the next gadget was extremely inventive. He strived for the
perfection of product so that his product would be the only thing his
customers would consider when upgrading, or replacing.
I had heard how difficult and complex he was, but then again he made his
fortune by being this type of person. However, fame, fortune, and a legacy
does not dictate if one is truly happy. Life is complex and people are even
more so, and we all are gifted with something which is unique and maybe
special from any other, it’s just that some are able to find what their
unique specialty is and then do something with it. For Jobs, I think it was
to create something that others wanted, and to create it well enough so that
there would always be a following of those who would wait for the next
“newest” item (gadget), almost like an addiction for some (such as the
iPhone, iPad, iPod, etc.)!
For me, I’ll just stick to my PC; it’s easier for me to understand and to
write programs to do what I want it to do for my job.

Why now?
Editor;
Re: Controversial Beach Road widening begins (PM Friday, 12 April 2013) -
During Songkran? This project waited 10 years so why right now and not 2
weeks later? Could have, temporarily, made 2nd Road 2-way to help alleviate
holiday heavy tourist movement.

Another way of getting macro
Editor;
Re: Getting in close and personal (Snap Shots PM Friday, 12 April 2013) -
There is another way of getting macro on the cheap: Macro Reverse Ring
Camera Mount Adapter. This is a cheap little gizmo available for most DSLR
cameras that allows you to reverse mount your lenses. The link explains it
better than I can
http://digital-photography-school.com/reverse-mounting-your-prime-lenses-for-affordable-macro-photography.
It is even possible - but difficult - to reverse the lens and hold it in
place to get macro photos!

Ageing with Dr Iain
Dear Editor,
No Friday morning would be complete for me without the often witty and
incisive scribblings of Dr Iain Corness. I am pleased (Modern Medicine April
12) that his own family insurance premium is not expensive and that medical
costs in Thailand are cheaper than in Oz. But is he a typical guy?
There are now oceans of elderly expats in their 70s swarming around Pattaya.
Check the matter out at any expat club meeting or quiz evening with all
those, most male, wrinkled faces. I suspect the majority are not covered by
adequate medical insurance. Either they left it too late to join a scheme or
they have quit because of the ever-rising premiums even as the pound and the
euro sink helplessly.
What is expensive or cheap depends on your financial resources. But I don’t
know any properly insured septuagenarian paying less than 200,000 baht a
year and some considerably more. Eventually these guys will have to admit
defeat and become their own insurer. Let’s not forget that one night in a
good intensive care unit in Thailand can cost 100,000 baht - remember the
frontloaded tests and diagnosis.
I don’t blame the hospitals. The Thai government has encouraged mass
migration of elderly westerners by lax retirement visa rules. The country is
now stuck with a very serious ageing problem of farangs, many of whom are no
longer covered for hospitalization in their first country. Between a rock
and a hard place indeed!
In the 1990s, Thai immigration required a letter from any doctor before
awarding a long-term permit. I’m told that this rule was abolished after a
successful applicant dropped dead in the car park after receiving his visa.
He had suffered a heart attack.

Making it harder to
cross Beach Road
Editor;
Re: Controversial Beach Road widening begins (PM Friday, 12 April 2013) -
With the road widening it will be even more difficult to cross the road to
what’s left of the beach. Pattaya is great for nightlife but with the
traffic fumes and pollution it is finished as a beach resort.

Four lanes into two?
Editor;
Re: Controversial Beach Road widening begins (PM Friday, 12 April 2013) -
Four lanes of traffic bottle-necking into two lanes at the corner of Walking
Street? It will slow traffic all the way back to Dolphin Roundabout. Perhaps
with everything stuck it may be easier for pedestrians to cross the road.
Better to have banned large busses from Beach Road and save 144 million baht
wasted on the road works.

Pollution group works hard
Editor;
Re: Been a long time coming (PM Friday, 12 April 2013) - The pollution group
works hard to help sort out problems in Pattaya but anyone who walks down
the beach from Central shopping centre to Pattaya Klang will be overcome by
all the trash on the beach. Seems the old habits of letting someone else
clean up after you are hard to break.
