Pattaya Sports Club Bowling League
Results & Standings March 1 (week 10)

200 Bowlers: Kran, Dave & Sue.
VFW Post 9876 won all four points from Indiana and
replaced Café Kronborg in first place. Aht Johansson led VFW with games of
196, 177 and 188 for a 561 series.
Café Kronborg dropped to second place after being shut out by Green Tree who
took all four points in that match. Kran Nielsen tried to win for Kronborg
with games of 215, 165 and 183 for a 563 series but her team handicap was
just too low even though they won every game scratch.
Canada dropped from second to third place after splitting their match
against Semper FI with each team winning two points. David Shaw had another
good bowling day with games of 185, 211 and 182 for a 578 series. Tao was
best for Semper FI with a 509 series.
Jack Tar won all four points from the Blind team with Ooy Pluemkamon bowling
a 530 series and Pauline had a 521 series. Kari bowling as a pacer had a 514
series.
Brother D got back on the winning track as they took three points from
slumping Bavaria. Sue Murphy bowled a 207 game, 519 series and Tue Pettae
had a 503 for Brother D.

Sea Fishing with KPK Food Services

Mike Gerrard
The wind was a little fresh today, Saturday, March 9, so much so that the waves were more than we normally experience and the waters a little more uncomfortable. Not enough though to spoil what ended up as a really enjoyable day.
We had newcomers Frank & Hilda Hargeman with us, who were on a flying visit from Laos where Frank works as a doctor. Frank fishes mainly on freshwaters (there being no sea in Laos) and I suppose it was beginners luck to catch the best fish of the day, thus claiming the KPK Food Services voucher. Sadly Frank and Hilda would be leaving Pattaya on Monday morning and therefore the voucher was passed onto Paul Davies who (although did not get the largest) caught the most fish.
Once again there were no huge fish around today. I think the water is getting a little warmer now and the biggies stay further out where the water is a little cooler as it gets deeper. However, this did not stop all of the group catching plenty of snapper, grouper and pladang. There were plenty to take home for the freezer.
Our trips are usually every fortnight on a Saturday. The next one is 23rd March and there are a couple of spaces available at this time of writing. Private charter can be made by anyone at anytime.
For further information on a great day out on the ocean with spectacular views and magnificent weather, however strictly fishing only, call me (Mike) on 087 091 7565.

Capt. Steve makes winning return
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Graham Holmes (left) receives
the TIAC trophy from The Outback Capt’ Steve Mann.
Monday, March 4, Burapha - Stableford
Thirty-four players to Burapha, plus another 32 players from the Tiac group
so a big day and as per usual the starter got us off early, but the course
was heavily booked and most groups took just on four and a half hours to
complete their round.
The day was overcast and pretty humid following on from the rain on Sunday
and overnight, however it was not too wet and carts were allowed on the
fairways after 10 a.m. There was still run on the fairways but some areas
short of the green were still a little soggy and you had to fly the ball to
the green. Otherwise the course was generally in good condition but the D
greens were a little slower than C and are still recovering from a recent
renovation but were good to putt on.
A special welcome went out today to Steve Giles’ mum, Liz who joined us for
a hit.
The course was set up a little shorter than normal; so some good scores were
recorded in all three divisions.

The TIAC group.
John Player quite incredibly notched up his 15th podium finish since the
start of the year to extend his “Race2Bkk” lead, scoring 41 points off his
19 handicap to win Div B from Paul Rodgers in second with 40 points; whilst
Bob Lindborg and Andrew Makara both had 38 points in Div C, as Bob got the
nod on count back.
Anton Rowbottam and Tim Knight both had 37 points to take their respective
third places in Div B & C and Gary Hogg off a 9 handicap and Paul Bourke off
an 11 handicap both scored 36 points in Div A; so good scores by all and
well played.
Five ‘2’s were recorded by Gary Hogg and Tim Knight on C5 and Murray Hart,
Paul Bourke and Pete Stonebridge on D2.
Div A (0-14)
1st Gary Hogg (9) 36pts
2nd Paul Bourke (11) 36pts
3rd Selwyn G. Wegner (13) 35pts
Div B (15-19)
1st John Player (19) 41pts
2nd Paul Rodgers (17) 40pts
3rd Anton Rowbottam (18) 37pts
Div C (20+)
1st Bob Lindborg (21) 38pts
2nd Andrew Makara (30) 38pts
3rd Timothy Knight (22) 37pts
Tuesday, March 5, Khao Kheow – Stableford
16 players played in today’s competition and at last, after a few words from
the General, we played A & B for a change as for the past five weeks it has
been B & C; and as usual we played from the yellows.

Sugar Ray Handford with Steve
Davey and Tim Knight.
We teed off about thirty minutes early which caused a bit of confusion as
we were still missing one flight as we teed off, so Capt’ Steve was on the
phone whilst teeing off on A1 but couldn’t see the names or numbers without
glasses, so he borrowed a pair from Rosco and as he took the glasses he
handed his driver to Rosco thinking that he was the caddie. Does Rosco look
like a caddie?
The TIAC group of 32 players followed closely behind us for the second day
of their four-day competition and on Thursday, they would play their third
round at Siam Plantation, finishing on Friday with us again at Green Valley.
This course has noticeably improved and it was in pretty good order with no
need for preferred lies; it was just a shame to see that some of the bunkers
hadn’t been raked - remember it’s up to the player to check that his/her
caddie does her job properly.
As usual the course was the winner, with nobody bettering their handicap
with Rosco edging out Muzza in a last six holes count back, both on 35pts.
Third went to Suzi, one back on 34 and Rod Crosswell, who was fourth, threw
away his chances of a win after scoring a 2 (the only one) for 5pts on hole
B1, by wiping the final two holes on B, better luck next week Rod!
1st Rosco Langoulant (15) 35pts
2nd Murray Hart (14) 35pts
3rd Suzi Lawton (20) 34pts
4th Rod Crosswell (14) 33pts
5th Stephen Mann (12) 30pts
Wednesday, March 6, Siam Plantation – Stableford
Another full field of 20 players at this great venue, even though it was
slightly disappointing not to play the best nine here, which is Sugarcane (A
loop).
The scoring was somewhat lower than usual with 35pts being the best of the
day, attained by Gerry O’Dwyer, taking first place in Div A. He was followed
home by two members here, Art O’Connor and Tom Fitpatrick, both on 30pts,
who beat another fellow member, Jim Bryan, also on 30.
Div B, did even less well, with 33pts points being the best anyone could
manage. Anton got that and he beat last minute entry (switched from Pattana)
Tim Knight on 32 and Paul Rodgers in third with 30.
There were two ‘2’s from Art O’Connor & Paul Rodgers.
Div A (1-16)
1st Gerry O’Dwyer (8) 35pts
2nd Arthur O’ Connor (11) 30pts
3rd Tom Fitzpatrick (13) 30pts
Div B (17+)
1st Anton Rowbottam (18) 33pts
2nd Timothy Knight (22) 32pts
3rd Paul Rodgers (16) 30pts
Wednesday, March 6, Pattana – Stableford
16 Outbackers were at Pattana today to play the A & B loops from the yellow
tees - at 6900 yards we felt the whites were a bit long, even though it is a
par 73 course.
We started on A course with a strong breeze blowing from the side making
slices and hooks a nightmare, however the course was in very good condition
and the greens on A were slightly faster than on B.
Steve Davey has eventually broken through, having seen his handicap drift
out to 28 over recent months but today he got his first victory, to follow
up his recent ‘2’ and not only did he win with 36pts, he also had another
‘2’, well done Steve.
Second was “Race2Bkk” leader, John Player on 32 and Greg LeBlanc took third
with 31, beating Sugar on a count back.
There were three ‘2’s from Steve Davey, Greg LeBlanc & Sugar Ray
1st Steve Davey (28) 36pts
2nd John Player (19) 32pts
3rd Greg Le Blanc (27) 31pts
4th Sugar Ray Handford (18) 31pts
5th Paul Greenaway (9) 30pts
Thursday, March 7, Siam Plantation – Stableford
The 32 players in the TIAC group from Western Australia, playing
in a four-day stableford competition with the Outback, rested yesterday, to
come out today (Thursday) to play Siam Plantation, on the A & C nines. It
was the first time on this spectacular course for many of them but the
general consensus was one of high praise.
The three -day leader board after today’s round saw Graham Holmes, the tour
organizer, with a five shot lead, playing off a handicap of 6. Murray Hart
was next best on 104 and both were a long way clear of third placed man,
Peter Sapwell (96pts), going into the final round on Friday.
Friday, March 8, Green Valley – Stableford
On any normal Friday with a total field of 76 players, there
would be plenty to write about but with the pending Outback tour due in Hua
Hin there was not too much time left for writing.
It’s pleasing to report that there was no shortage of caddies and the whole
field got away on schedule with the visiting TIAC group playing at the back
of the field and their leaders going out last.
Capt’ Steve bounced back to some form at last just in time for Hua Hin, with
41pts to win Div A from Paul Greenaway on 39. Kev Hamilton and playing
partner John O’Keefe had to be split on count back, both with 38pts in Div
B, whilst John Stafford recorded the top score of the day, an amazing 44pts
to win Div C by four from Greg Hill. Bob Lindborg continued his good form
with another win in Div D on 38pts from Suzi (35) and Seesa (33)
There were three ‘2’s from Wes Rado (9th) and Peter LeNoury & Bernie
Stafford on the 12th.
It was no great surprise that Graham Holmes won the TIAC event and their
fine cup was presented to Graham by Capt’ Steve, who actually first played
with the Outback some years ago now, in a TIAC event.
The Outback’s new Chef put on a good spread of nibbles as the Outback hosted
both their own and the TIAC presentations. Later that evening the boys were
off to Rosco’s Good Everything Bar for more liquid nourishment and more good
food.
Div A (0-13)
1st Stephen Mann (12) 41pts

Day 4 of the Lewiinski’s Open Championship and the players went out in
reverse order of the field, with the contenders going off last. It was
Clint and Eddy ‘the Eagle’ in the last group with the Donkey and
Irishman Gerry Roche just in front.
Lewiinskis
Champion Clinton Hazlett (right) with Lewiinski’s Golf Captain Jez Lees.
‘[The Eagle’ started off with a bogie on the first,
and then a double followed by a bogie but held it steady with a par on
the fourth. Clinton started with a steady par on the first, then a blood
curling yell was heard from the second tee box as Clint sent his tee
shot onto the wrong fairway, which led to a lost ball resulting in a
nine on the hole!
Clint recovered well to card pars on the next two holes. Eddy took a
bogie then a birdie and a par to really put a cat among the pigeons,
finishing the front nine with a solid par and bogie on the ninth. Clint
had a double on the eighth and a par on the ninth.
On the back nine Eddy started birdie-double to Clint’s bogie-treble so
for the first time in the Open Eddy was in the lead. Clint recovered
well to card four pars and a bogie to Eddy’s treble, two bogies and a
par, but remember he was a 16 handicapper and was supposed to do this.

Plate winner Mark Bonner
(right) collects his trophy from Jez.
Eddy did extremely well to par the seventeenth, as
Clint made a double. So it is down to the last hole which left Clint
with a five foot nerve racking put to force a playoff - Clint made the
putt and won the 19th hole.
So it was Clinton Hazlett’s name that appeared on the perpetual trophy.
Commiserations go out to Eddy who helped make this a game to remember.
And what about the Plate? This also had its fair share of drama as it
went to a three-way count back that saw Mark ‘mussels’ Bonner lift the
top prize, with Terry ‘pork chop’ Mangan the first runner up as Freddy
Starbeck was in third.
Thanks to the Lewiinski’s staff for all their hard work and to all those
that participated, especially Eddy ‘the Eagle’ Beilby.

Peter was six clear of Terry Fitzgerald.
Tom Killoran out-pointed both Aussie Lou Zigzag and Sean Murphy as he
rounded out the flight.
The laurels in the senior circuit went to Liam Hayes with a sparkling 37
points. Second and third places went the same way as their B Flight
mates, as Dominic Downey took silver and the bronze went to Trevor
Oliver. Co. Offaly gang leader Kevin ‘you know who’ was left speechless
as he had nowhere to stand.
The Irish duo of Dominic Downey and Peter Henshaw split the 2’s pot
Wednesday, March 6, St. Andrews - Stableford
A Flight
1st Tony Glidden (13) 44pts
2nd Thierry Petrement (10) 39pts
3rd Bob Watson (3) 38pts
B Flight
1st Tore Eliassen (16) 38pts
2nd Terry Mangan (14) 38pts
3rd Gerry Roche (18) 38pts
C Flight
1st Stuart Brown (26) 37pts
2nd Ivan Plunkett (23) 34pts
3rd Peter Henshaw (19) 33pts
Wednesday’s venue was the intriguing construct of Desmond Muirhead. Tony
Glidden showed fine mettle as he topped the day and A Flight with a
flawless 44 points. Mr. nice guy Thierry Petrement with a fine 39 points
must have thought he had done enough to have won, and most other days he
would have, he just picked the wrong day. Aussie ace Bob Watson filled
the flight a further shot back.
B Flight was log jammed as three players had 38 point returns: Tore
Eliassen, Terry ‘pork chop’ Mangan and Gerry Roche. When the count back
was complete Tore was laughing all the way to the pay window, Pork chop
was smiling and Gerry was weeping.
Stuart Brown topped C Flight with an excellent 37 points, three clear of
a pair of ‘Micks’ - Ivan Plunkett, who snatched the silver, whilst Peter
Don O’Corleone Henshaw was just happy to see any part of the podium with
his 33 points.
Tony Glidden, Paul Shaw, Dave Palmer, Gavin Perfect, Gerry Roche and
Gary Ralph shared the 2’s pot.
Friday, March 8, Greenwood C&B - Stableford
A Flight
1st Matt Doyle (12) 37pts
2nd Bob Watson (3) 36pts
3rd Dominic Downey (11) 34pts
B Flight
1st Barry Copstake (15) 36pts
2nd Michael Goggin (15) 35pts
3rd Jim Bell (14) 35pts
C Flight
1st Mikko Mutanen (17) 37pts
2nd Tom Gorey (21) 36pts
3rd Fergus O’Brien (25) 34pts
The day belonged to Matt Doyle - a sergeant in the Co. Offaly gang - and
Mikko ‘Mutant’, both players the only ones to better par on the day.
Following Matt in A Flight was pay window regular Aussie ace Bob Watson
with an even par round, no mean feat when you have a measly 3 handicap.
Third place went to the second count back winner on the day, Irishman
Dominic Downey, Dominic’s good fortune was to the dismay of Steve
Gibson.
B Flight was like a casting directors delight with the gold leaving in
the hands of Barry ‘the boot’ Copestake (but only just as the boot was
nearly on the other foot). Barry forgot to add his name to the card - it
was signed but took a bit of working out. The silver left with Michael
Goggin and the bronze gripped tight by Jimmy AK-47 Bell.
The junior flight was led by a guy who seems to cash every week, Mikko
‘Mutant’ Mutanen. Tom Gory, fully committed to continuing his downward
handicap trend, was second and third went to the ever improving Irishman
Fergus O’Brien.
Barry Copestake, Colin Smith, D Palmer, Michael Goggin, Colin Davis and
Bob Watson shared the 2’s pot.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya land Soi 1, Beach Rd Soi13/13
near Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and add
your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is

Count-backs galore at Green Valley
The Billabong Bar Golf Group

The Royal Freemantle Golf Club
boys.
Monday, March 4, Pattana - Stableford
We played Pattana today for the first time since the Billabong
started and the concensus of opinion put it firmly on the list for future
play. Everyone got there (i.e. no lost souls) and they all enjoyed
themselves immensely. So I guess we will be going back.
It was goodbye to Joop today, see you next year mate and enjoy the cold.
There was also the battle between the beauty and the beast and yep, that’s
right, she did it again by beating David on a count back for third place.
It’s getting to be a habit Dave, maybe next time eh?
In the places today were third as stated previously Liz Collier with 34
points, second Jack Piercefield on 37 and the winner was the man who ran the
show today for Capt. Bob, i.e. Kevin Wild with a fantastic 39 points.
The course was in grand condition but the wind played a bit of havoc from
time to time in the really exposed parts of the course.
Wednesday, March 6, Green Valley - Stableford
Green Valley was the order of the day and we were joined by the
Royal Freemantle Golf Club lads. What a day out and hard work for Lumpy to
work out the count backs as there were three golfers on 37 points and three
on 36 so it was count backs from start to finish. Also usually there are few
‘2’s recorded but today there were seven - it seems to go from none to very
many - but a great day out was had by all.
There were some hard luck stories, as there usually are, but on the day it’s
who finishes in front that takes the prizes. The missed putt’s etc., well
you get some and miss others.
Anyway it was down to The RFGC to take out the major prizes and coming in
fourth was one of our regular players, Martin Hayes, on 36 points on a count
back over Lumpy Russell. In third place was Corry Battel on 37 points on a
count back over Duncan McLean, and coming in first was Pip Mangano, the
organiser for the tour from Royal Freemantle, with 37 points also. This was
one hell of a close round of golf for all concerned and there was a lot of
banter before and after.
As mentioned there were seven ‘2’s coming from Bob Finley, Martin Hayes, Tao
Prka, Bluey Fiorrantino, Bill Cromary, Sean Ewing and Pip Mangano. Many
thanks goes to Pip for the organisation and it was a job well done mate!
Friday, March 8, Plutaluang – Stableford
Plutaluang was our venue today and because there was a large
tournament on East and South, with a shot gun start, we played West and
North. The course was in great condition and apart from a shower of rain,
which chased everyone into the nearest shelter, it was a good day out.
Six teams played a scramble and the scores were close and all within about 4
shots from winners. Coming is sixth was the team of Bob Wighton, Peter Allen
Greg Nathan and Ronny Dunlop with a score of 63.2. Fifth place went to Arab
Russell, Duncan McLean, Craig Davies and Stan Stoker with 62.2, fourth was
the team of Brian Wilkinson, Mark Wood, John and Mike with a score of 60.4.
Next was Wayne Cotterell, Gary Hogg, Eng Cotterell and Steve Croy with 60.3,
second place went to Geoff Coach, Jeff North, Dave Done and Graham Beaumont
with 59, and in the winner’s circle was the team of Greig Ritchie, Chris
Dodd, Bryce Stick and Bob Philp with a score of 58.9.
It was a good day out and enjoyed by all. The next scramble there will be on
the 29th March.
Note: If you are looking for a game with a friendly lot of bloke’s just call
Bob on 082 204 3411 or call into the Billabong Golf Club looking straight
down Lake Mabprachan, and dont forget we are doing a trip away for Songhran
17th 18th and 19th April. Place’s are limited to 20 players and the website
has cost’s etc. -

Silverware heads West at Greenwood
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
Monday, March 4, Bangpra – Stableford
An unpleasant surprise greeted us on arrival at Bangpra when we found we had
no booking - and had in fact arrived a week early! Following hasty
negotiations with the management and starter, they agreed to fit our 30
golfers in, if we could tee off immediately (30 minutes ahead of our normal
time) and we may have to split the groups to start off the first and tenth
tees.
Geoff
presents the KPK voucher to medal competition winner Mark West (right).
The first group duly rushed to the first tee and set off
to find they had an empty course ahead of them, and eventually all eight
groups got away off the same tee, as the starter shepherded a group of
Koreans to the tenth. After such an inauspicious start, the day turned out
perfectly as the course was in great shape, the weather was cool, and the
greens were slightly slower than on our previous visit.
The first groups were back in the clubhouse in under four hours and everyone
commented on the successful outcome of another day of millionaire’s golf.
Several players took the opportunity to thank the starter at the end of the
round, he always looks after us well, but today he excelled himself.
February’s Golfer of the Month, Gez Williams continued his good run of form,
producing the best score of the day, to win the A Flight ahead of Tore
Eliassen. Mike Corner was playing his last game before returning to the U.K.
and went out on a high note by playing to his handicap winning the B Flight
in the process.
A Flight
1st Gez Williams (15) 37pts
2nd Tore Eliassen (16) 36pts
3rd Colin Greig (10) 34pts
B Flight
1st Mike Corner (19) 36pts
2nd Neil Griffin (26) 33pts
3rd Raleigh Gosney (18) 33pts
Near Pins: John Hughes, Lee Butler, Mark West, and Jerry Waselenkoff.
Least Putts: Mike Grasser (28 putts)
Wednesday, March 6, Greenwood C&B – Medal
We had a smaller field of golfers today for our first medal
competition of the month, once again generously sponsored by KPK Foods. The
first tee was clear and we tee’d off without delay, with no groups in sight
ahead of us.
The course was in good shape and the weather was bright and breezy so
everything was perfect for another enjoyable day of golf. The round
progressed smoothly but the breeze, particularly on the outward C nine was
making the course play longer than normal, and this probably accounts for
the moderate scores.
No one played to their handicap on the day, but Mark West was the best of
the field, probably due to the fact he also won the least putts competition.
Gordon Melia deserves a special mention for overcoming the putting yips
which have plagued him for the last couple of years, and came in second
place in the putting competition, taking only 29 putts – this from a man who
has been known in the past to miss 6 inch putts on a regular basis!
1st Mark West (14) net 74
2nd Gordon Melia (20) net 75
3rd Dave Ashman (14) net 77
4th Geoff Parker (12) net 78
Near Pins: Tony Messenger and Gordon Melia (2).
Least Putts: Mark West (28 putts)
Friday, March 8, Pattana A&B – Stableford
We elected to play off the white tees today (not a popular
decision with everyone!), which with a course distance of over 6,900 yards
is considerably longer than we normally play. The combination of A and B
courses include probably the two most difficult par 4’s in the area, and all
the greens are tricky here, so it was no surprise that the scores were
moderate at best, and the course was undoubtedly the winner on the day.
The course was quiet, and the round progressed smoothly, although some
players were taking many more shots than they would normally expect! John
Hughes was playing his final game before returning to U.K., but failed to go
out on a high note as the longer course took it’s toll, and he was heard to
comment that it will be good to get back to playing a 6,000 yard course –
even in the cold weather!
Only one flight today, and Tore Eliassen produced the winning score ahead of
Geoff Parker and Jerry Waselenkoff, two points behind. Colin Greig and Lee
Butler tied the least putts competition, which was made more difficult than
usual due to the fact that the greens on the two nines were completely
different, both in texture and speed.
1st Tore Eliassen (16) 33pts
2nd Geoff Parker (12) 31pts
3rd Jerry Waselenkoff (18) 31pts
4th Lee Butler (16) 30pts
Near Pins: Geoff Parker, Jerry Waselenkoff and PJ Redmond.
Least Putts: Lee Butler and Colin Greig (32)
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society, who now play out of
The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station, and almost
opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play three times per week on Mondays,
Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but
competitive golf competition why not come and join us.
We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new
players are always welcome. Contact Buff on 086 046 5091 or 080 605 5663 for
all enquiries. You can find all the news, schedules and results on our

Breslin the bandit strikes again
The Backyard Golf Society
Our favourite scribe decided he needed to add to his
property portfolio so has gone back to work for a month. On hearing of his
departure the caddies from Eastern Star and Emerald were seen crying into
their somtan, no doubt missing Irish John’s sympathetic conversation and
relaxed demeanor on the golf course!
A good turnout at Emerald on Friday, March 8, and an enjoyable round was had
by everybody. Don’t we just all love low season?
Uncle Tom Breslin showed everyone a clean pair of heels and now playing off
the silver tees appears to be related to Zorro. Hopefully the handicap
secretary is a better swordsman and cuts Tom down to appropriate size. Andy
Oz took near the pin.
Mike the Taxi had six skins, the French Canadian had four skins, TC had
four, Martin had one, Dan had one, uncle Tom had one and there was one
rollover.
I think mention should be made of the improvement in the higher handicappers
in the society, in particular Martin who has dropped nine shots and the
overall improvement of Dan and Mickey. Martin deserves further mention for
the purchasing of a football square for a young lady down BC, a unique
occasion indeed and to what end— nobody knows!

Peter Bye has a day out
PSC Golf from The Growling Swan

Peter Bye, Russell Calcutt &
Ed Stewart.
Peter Blackburn
Monday, March 4, Bangpakong - Stableford
A couple of late withdrawals brought our numbers down to 24 and
on an overcast but fine Monday morning we assembled at The Growling Swan in
readiness for the longish journey to one of our favourites, Bangpakong
Riverside Golf Club. An early tee time meant an earlier than normal
departure of 8.00 a.m. and we managed to depart just five minutes later than
that as Stu had slept in but of course we waited for him.
We welcomed back Paul Quinn and Kevin Waycott and gave a special welcome to
three charming Thai ladies who had driven down from Bangkok to play with us
– Miss Wanta, Miss Anna & Miss Ploy.
It was a bit of a slow trip which resulted in us arriving at the course 70
minutes later but surprisingly the venue was very quiet so we were able to
take our time in preparation. Weather conditions were very unusual for this
time of year as it was quite cool with a bit of breeze and our first four
ball teed off twenty minutes behind schedule at 9.50 a.m. with no-one ahead
of us.
As expected, the golf course was in pristine condition with the lush
fairways and beautifully prepared greens which were at times quite slick but
firm and true. Continuing to be overcast it did try to rain a couple of
times and one of my playing partners, veteran Don Richardson, spotted a
swallow flying very close to the ground on one occasion which prompted him
to remark that it was a sign of rain. He was sort of correct as we did get a
few drops but not at any stage did it look like spoiling our day.
We played at a steady pace, enjoying the golf course and the company and
completed the round in the reasonable time of four hours & fifteen minutes.

Gary Monley, Shane Young &
Mike Gosden.
We were able to have 2 grades with five podium spots in
each. A Grade was for handicaps 0 to 17 and B Grade for 18 and over. We had
nearest the pins on all the par threes and longest first putts on the 9th &
18th greens.
As the scores started to come in afterwards it was apparent that someone
would have a very good score and that indeed was the case with Peter Bye
winning the A Grade with a super 47 points and fellow Aussie Kevin Waycott
was snapping at his heels in second place with a fine 45 points. With two
golfers on 41 points a count back was required and Don Richardson (23 point
back nine) took third spot from Alain “Inspector Clousseau” Taddei (20 point
back nine) in fourth place and Miss Anna finished fifth with 39 points.
It was a close contest at the top of B Grade with Ed “Willie Nelson” Stewart
coming first with 42 points, just one point ahead of the “in form” Duangjai
“Kae” Tusagad who finished second. The popular Sandy “Leiperfrog” Leiper
took third spot with 39 points and in a three-way count back on 38 points it
was Graham “Grunter” Buckingham (21 point back nine) who finished fourth
with Max “Corsets” Bracegirdle (19 point back nine) in fifth spot. Geri
Crilly (18 point back nine) was the unlucky one who missed out on a podium
spot.
A Flight (0-17)
1st Peter Bye (16) 47pts
2nd Kevin Waycott (11) 45pts
3rd Don Richardson (12) 41pts
4th Alain Taddei (17) 41pts
5th Miss Anna (12) 39pts
B Flight (18+)
1st Ed Stewart (19) 42pts
2nd Duangjai Tusagad (26) 41pts
3rd Sandy Leiper (34) 39pts
4th Graham Buckingham (25) 38pts
5th Max Bracegirdle (28) 38pts
Near Pins: 4th – Miss Anna, 7th – Graham Buckingham, 13th – Alain
Taddei, 16th – Miss Wanta
Long Putts: 9th – Don Richardson, 18th – Miss Anna
The Growling Swan NAGA Award, (awarded to the golfer who has the worst score
on the day and discreetly their score is not made public) was won by Russell
Calcutt who accepted the cap in fine spirit. Martin Todd took Deefa for the
usual walk and collected many donations for the needy in Pattaya from our
ever generous Growling Swan golfers.
It was then back to the Growling Swan for the usual post mortems, although
the stand out was the beaming Peter Bye who after his previous game stated
that he was seriously thinking of giving the game up. Today he improved by
22 shots, which just goes to show, you should stick with it and never give
up at this great game of ours! It was yet another terrific day with good
company & plenty of fun.
Thursday, March 7, Treasure Hill - Stableford
It was once again time for the Growling Swan Delinquents to join
us, which boosted our field to 27 for the day’s outing to the tough Treasure
Hill Golf Course and we assembled at the Bar in readiness for the trip.
We welcomed Ken Hole, who hadn’t played with us for a while, and also the
returning Dick Braimbridge after nearly 3 months back in Queensland,
Australia. It was time to say farewell to Harry (HTH) Wszola who is off back
to Queensland with his family for 8 weeks.
Departing the GS in 3 minivans right on time at 8.30 a.m. we headed off and
after encountering the usual heavy traffic on 331 we arrived at the course
50 minutes later where it appeared to be almost deserted. There was no-one
waiting on the first tee so our first group, a three-ball got away 10
minutes ahead of schedule at 9.50 a.m., teeing off into a fairly stiff
breeze on the tough par five first hole.
The skies were clear and it was shaping up to be a hot one but the course
was in very good condition although the sanded greens posed a few problems
for many and as the scores indicated afterwards the course was to be the
winner on the day. The three-ball bolted away from the rest of the field and
completed their round in the very quick time of three hours & forty five
minutes.
We were able to have 2 grades with five podium spots in each. A Grade was
for handicaps 0 to 23 and B Grade for 24 and over. We had nearest the pins
on all the par threes and longest first putts on the 9th & 18th greens.
We had just one golfer who was able to play to their handicap and it was
Mike “Hunter” Gosden who won the A Grade section with a steady 36 points,
with Martin Todd in second place on 33 points. With 2 golfers on 31 points
we had a count back situation which saw Ebrahim (17 point back nine) taking
third spot from your writer, Peter Blackburn (16 point back nine) in fourth
place.
Then came 5 golfers on 30 points vying for the final spot on the podium and
it was Mike Allidi (18 point back nine & 13 points on the last 6 holes)
winning the count back from Roy “Plums” Dayton (18 point back nine & 10
points on the last 6 holes), Stu Rifkin (16 point back nine), Paul Hack (16
point back nine) & J C Lhoste (14 point back nine).
The winner of B Grade was Shane “Jockey” Young breaking through for his very
first top place finish with 34 points, 1 point ahead of Frank “Toy Story”
Donnelly in second spot with the returning Dick “Reverend” Braimbridge in
third place on 32 points. Wendy Bernek finished fourth with 31 points and
Duangjai “Kae” Tusagad was fifth with 30 points.
A Flight (0-23)
1st Mike Gosden (12) 36pts
2nd Martin Todd (8) 33pts
3rd Ebrahim (17) 31pts
4th Peter Blackburn (10) 31pts
5th Mike Allidi (2) 30pts
B Flight (24+)
1st Shane Young (29) 34pts
2nd Frank Donnelly (24) 33pts
3rd Dick Braimbridge (36) 32pts
4th Wendy Bernek (30) 31pts
5th Duangjai Tusagad (26) 30pts
Near Pins: 2nd – Mike Gosden, 6th – Frank Donnelly, 13th – Martin
Todd, 17th – Peter Bye
Long Putts: 9th – Mike Gosden, 18th – Paul Hack
It was also time to announce the Growling Swan Golfer of The Month award for
the month of February. This award is based on the total of the golfers’ best
4 stableford scores during the month and the results were as follows:
1st Duangjai “Kae” Tusagad 153pts
2nd Martin Todd 145pts
3rd Ebrahim 144pts
The Growling Swan NAGA Award was narrowly won by Gary Monley who accepted
the cap in fine spirit and wore the cap for quite some time in the Bar
afterwards. Martin Todd took Deefa for the usual walk and collected many
donations for the needy in Pattaya from our ever generous Growling Swan
golfers.
I took this opportunity to give an update on our “Deefa the Dog” collections
and informed everyone that with a figure in excess of 26,000 baht we were
now ready to fund yet another project to assist the Pattaya underprivileged.
William Macey, Charity Chairman of Pattaya Sports Club has been informed and
we are awaiting advice from him regarding a new project.
Back at the Growling Swan afterwards it was busy and noisy of course while
discussions regarding the day’s golf and “what could have been” permeated
throughout the bar. Yet another great day out on a very good golf course
with terrific company.
Note: Growling Swan Golf, the home of friendly golf in Pattaya welcomes
golfers of any persuasion – low & high handicappers alike, female golfers
and beginners. We generally play Mondays & Thursdays, meeting at The
Growling Swan (formerly The Bunker Bar) in Soi Chaiyapoon at 8.00 a.m. with
transport departing at 8.30 a.m. For bookings or more information please

A tough week on the fairways
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, March 4, Khao Kheow -
Stableford
CSS 74
Div. 1 (0-15)
1st Phil Groves (7) 37pts
2nd Bob Heath (12) 35pts
3rd Mike Armstrong (15) 33pts
4th Neville Duncan (10) 29pts
Div. 2 (16+)
1st Al Rolnik (19) 33pts
2nd Mike Hill (22) 32pts
3rd Trevor Schirmer (17) 32pts
4th Frank Dunstan (25) 29pts
What is surely one of the best conditioned courses in the area right at this
moment proved to be a stern test for the hopefuls out of Soi 13, with the
CSS for the day moving put to 74 over the A & B courses. This was due mainly
to the gusting wind which appeared not to be helping on any of the holes,
especially the par five second on the A course that did not give up a single
par on the day, and with the 185 yard par three and the stroke index 1 to
follow in quick succession not many of the players got off to a good start.
Al
Rolnik.
Phil Groves returned the best of the day in the first
division, after what proved to be the best round of the week and the only
one under par against handicap, to win by two from Bob Heath, who is playing
unusually well this trip. Mike Armstrong took third another two back, with
Neville Duncan in fourth place trailing well behind the leader but with many
stragglers below him on the score sheet.
The second division was a triumph for Al Rolnik whose steady start was
sufficient to see him home even with a unsteady finish that saw him
garnering a meager five points from the last four holes, with one of those
accounting for four points as he slipped in a very nice ‘2’ for four on the
par 3 island 17th.
Markku
Tynell.
Mike Hill took second spot after winning a count back
over Trevor Schirmer with a better 17 to 16, with Frank Dunstan taking
fourth another three back.
Al Rolnik took the second division 2’s pot whilst Neville Duncan had his
usual one to claim the first division.
Prior to the presentations there were welcome backs for Bob Lamond and Todd
Pahl.
Wednesday, March 6, Treasure Hill - Stableford
CSS 75 NC
Div. 1 (0–15)
1st Pat Prendeville (15) 33pts
2nd Bob Heath (12) 32pts
3rd Kevin Blake (5) 32pts
4th Neville Duncan (10) 31pts
Div. 2 (16+)
1st Markku Tynell (26) 34pts
2nd Trevor Schirmer (17) 30pts
3rd Hal Hart (24) 30pts
4th Frank Dunstan (25) 29pts
As usual the extremely tough Treasure Hill layout from the white tees proved
too be just a little more than most of the entrants could manage
comfortably, with the pins set in the smallest parts of the greens on almost
every hole. When this was added to the length of over 6,700 yards it made
for a very tough day for scoring and it was no surprise to find that the CSS
had gone out to 75 and the day had become non-counting for handicap
purposes.

Erik Donnestad.
It may prove a better day out for the next outing to use
the yellow tees at approximately 6,400 yards to ensure a counting
competition.
The first division was led in by Pat Prendeville, who struggled for the
first six holes amassing just seven points but covered the homeward half
much better scoring 19 points, which included a blob, to take his first win
out of The Haven by a single point. There was a count back for second that
Bob Heath won, to take his second podium placing of the week, with a better
9 to 8 on the back six after he had tied the nine at 13 apiece with Kevin
Blake, leaving the latter in third place on his last outing before returning
to the UK for a bit of a rest. Neville Duncan slipped into fourth place
after winning a count back over Alan Hanlon with a better 19 to 16.
Markku Tynell’s fine two over handicap return on such a difficult course was
well worth the win in the second division as he was faced with at least two
wood shots on all holes, except the par threes, and which still left a bit
to go, but he had a very good day with his short game which was enough to
take his first win for a very long time. Trevor Schirmer struggled into
second place after winning a count back against Hal Hart with a better 19 to
14 after having a distinctly quite outward nine. Frank Dunstan had another
result sliding into fourth spot just one behind those two but ahead of many
others.
There were no 2’s in the second division but Bob Heath and Neville Duncan
(of course) shared the first division.
Back at The Haven there was a welcome for Bas Coleman together with welcome
backs for Pat Prendeville, John Sutcliffe, Brian Randall and Wilf Wellman.
Friday, March 8, Phoenix - Stableford
CSS 74
Div. 1 (0-15)
1st Erik Donnestad (4) 34pts
2nd Phil Groves (7) 33pts
3rd Neville Duncan (10) 32pts
4th Pat Prendeville (15) 31pts
Div. 2 (16+)
1st Markku Tynell (26) 35pts
2nd Ole Stamnes (27) 33pts
3rd Seppo Sadeharju (25) 33pts
4th Mike Korney (19) 32pts
If the players who took off for the always popular Phoenix Golf Club, where
the Lake and Ocean nines awaited them, thought that they were in for a much
easier day than on the two previous outings earlier in the week, they had a
rude awakening when the day was done and dusted and the scores returned and
tallied as the CSS went out yet again to 74. The wind had once again been
the undoing of the majority of the rounds even after the course had been
found to be in tip top shape from tee to green and with the greens as usual
first class.
Erik Donnestad at last reconfirmed his pedigree with a win on this tour,
albeit by the slimmest of margins ahead of Phil Groves who had been
determined that his last outing would be a winning one but sadly fell well
short of the form he had displayed when winning earlier in the week. Phil
had to settle for second place ahead of Neville Duncan, who has become one
of the usual suspects during this visit, taking third and Pat Prendeville
fourth after winning a count back over the out of form, but big hearted
nevertheless, Jim Slattery with a better 17 to 15 on the last nine.
The second division was once again headed by Markku Tynell, who set up a
personal record with his second win in a week scoring one better than
previously and winning by two from Ole Stamnes. The latter took second place
after he won a count back against Seppo Sadeharju, outscoring him by 19 to
17 which left Mike Korney back in fourth just one behind.
There were no 2’s in the first division with even Neville Duncan finding the
windy conditions just a bit too difficult, but Shuichi Kodaka slipped a long
one in to take the second division rollover pool.
Before the presentations were made there was a welcome back for Mike Flynn
and farewells for Mike Sanders, Phil Groves Mike Armstrong, Frank Dunstan,
Peter MacKenzie and Neville Duncan.

Ultimate Ulf
Phoenix Members Golf Society

Tuesday’s winners pose with
staff at The Relax Bar.
Mike Gerrard
It was another beautiful day on the fairways of Phoenix, Tuesday, March 5,
with a little cloud cover to start and a nice breeze blowing from the east
so temperatures were comfortable. So much in fact so that I managed to walk
nine holes before my legs gave way to old age fatigue. I think they say
“good exercise”. It is if you’re fit!
There were some really good scores today with all four places making par or
better. In first place Ulf Berggren who shot the lights out with a fine 41
points (gross 79) to claim the Ann’s Salon voucher. In second place was Joe
Miller with 39 points (gross 81), to bid us farewell for a few months whilst
he goes back to the USA to see a few family and friends. Third was Richard
Baldwin with 37 points and fourth was myself with 36. This was after having
a couple of months forgetting how to hit a golf ball and my handicap going
up to 14. Hopefully back to better golf!
Near pins went to Gary Blackburne, Peter Harris, Jim Neilson & Bob Neylon.
Murphy’s law prevailed in the lucky draw: Sergio Poggi had gone across the
road to a massage parlour because the Relax Bar did not have a masseuse
available and his name was drawn out for the free massage at the Relax Bar.
Other lucky draw winners were Adriano Reale & Eamon Murtagh.
Onto Friday, March 8, and scoring today was a little lower than Tuesday but
it was myself with 35 points (blobbing the last hole) to hang on for victory
today. In second place was Bengt Hellstrom with 34 points, third was Mukesh
Thakker with 34, losing on count back to Bengt, and fourth was Mark Jenning
with 31 points.
Near pins went to Bengt Hellstrom (2), Thiery Petriment & Richard Baldwin.
Lucky draw, as always donated by the Relax Bar, went to Ulf Berggren, Pierre
Bietry & Andre Fortis.
Although we are predominantly a Phoenix members group we do welcome visitors
as our guests and they can enjoy a special green fee of 1.000 baht until the
end of March. After that the Tuesday & Thursday of each week will be a
Sports Day and guests will be charged 800 baht green fee. Friday will be
1,000 baht green fee.

Baechli blitz at Crystal Bay
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Derek Brook
Tuesday, March 5, Crystal Bay – Stableford
This is another course we play at regularly, mainly because it is a
great deal, but also because it is a fine course. On the day we had
a big turnout but still we were soon on our way and with it being
along the Sukhumwit Road we were soon there.
The test for the day was to be the A & B Nines, for me the best 18
holes, and as it happened, despite the course being busy, we were
soon underway. We play here often enough these days and today it was
pretty much as we expected; the fairways were fine but well used and
the greens were fast but were a bit worn.
All in all a fine day out, enjoyed by all our players, but soon over
it was time for shower and maybe a bite to eat, then hit the road
back to Bert’s. Then it was soon time for the results.
Walter Baechli
In the A Flight, 0 to 18, the winner was Walter Baechli with a
fine 42 points. In second was Richard Kubicki with 37 points, with
Doug Maiko in third with 35 points. We then had a count back on 34
points that saw John Hackett in fourth and Takeshi just missing out.
In the B Flight the winner was Andre Van Dyk with 36 points ahead of
a count back on 33 points that saw Max Bracegirdle in second and
Jack Robertson in third. In fourth was Dick Warberg with 32 points.
Near Pins: Brian Gabe, Walter Baechli, Jack Robertson
Long Putts: Doug Maiko, Andre Van Dyk
Friday, March 8, Greenwood – Stableford
So off we went to Greenwood for the second time in just
over a week, due to our preferred course all of a sudden putting the
rate up. So why not go to Greenwood as this is a place we all like
to play, once we get there.

The course is in good condition at present, I suspect due to far
fewer playing here than many other venues, and we were able to get
around in good time. Then it was time for a shower before we started
on the long haul back to Tropical Bert’s.
Back there it was soon time for the results. The winner with 37
points was Landis Brooks ahead of Andre Van Dyk in second with 36
points. We then had a count back on 34 points that saw Dick Warberg
in third and in fourth was Mark West. T.T.F.N.
Near Pins: Mike Gaussa, Landis Brooks, Dick Warberg (2)

McGowan on the march
IPGC Golf from The Tara Court
Sunday, March 3, Mt. Shadow –
Stableford
It was another enjoyable visit to Mountain Shadow for our usual Sunday
outing. It seems to be getting a bit quieter around the club now and we got
off ten minutes before our scheduled time.
Despite an unusual heavy shower of rain for this time of year when we had to
take cover for about twenty minutes, we still managed to get around in just
a little over four hours.
Charlie
Lapsley.
Again only one of our group managed to
play to his handicap and that was Frank McGowan with 36pts. Frank has been
having a very good spell at the golf lately and has become a regular visitor
to the podium. In second place was Joe Peters with 33pts, beating George
Dearson (who was on his first visit with us) in to third place on a count
back.
There were no 2’s today although at least one of our group missed a very
good opportunity to get one.
1st Frank McGowan (16) 36pts
2nd Joe Peters (20) 33pts
3rd George Dearson (20) 33pts.
Tuesday, March 5, Green Valley – Stableford
Today we had our first visit to Green Valley since we started our group and
for many of us it was a welcome return, because the course was so busy
during high season we had not been able to get tee times there up till now.
For a course that gets so much play it is in excellent condition, both
greens and fairways.
Charlie Lapsley won the day with an excellent 38pts and on his first visit
with us Rick Holmes was second with 37. Joe McArdle came third with 34 and
three people had birdie 2’s.
1st Charlie Lapsley (9) 38pts
2nd Rick Holmes (16) 37pts
3rd Joe McArdle (15) 34pts
2’s: Ted Murphy, Rick Holmes, Charlie Lapsley.
Thursday, March 7, Laem Chabang - Stableford
Today we went to Laem Chabang and what a great experience it is to go there.
From the moment you go in the entrance it is just beautiful, manicured to
perfection wherever you look.
We had a large group out today as we are getting very good value there, up
to 40% discount on the green fees as we have a few members of Laem Chabang
playing with us and they can get good discounts for everyone. For that
reason and because the course is so beautiful we will be playing there every
Thursday for the rest of March at least.
We played the C and A courses today which are the most difficult and once
again Frank McGowan was the winner, coming in with an excellent 40pts. That
is Frank’s third win with us in the last week so the handicap will be coming
down quickly now!
Eamonn Murtagh was second with 38pts, which was also a very good score,
especially as we played the C course. George Cullen came third with 35pts
after beating Charlie Lapsley on a count back.
The 2's were won by Frank McGowan and George Cullen.
1st Frank McGowan (16) 40pts
2nd Eamonn Murtagh (16) 38pts
3rd George Cullen (14) 35pts
4th Charlie Lapsley (9) 35pts
2’s: Frank McGowan, George Cullen
Note: The Tara Court Golf Group plays every Sunday, Tuesday and
Thursday, leaving O’Gara’s Bar and Restaurant in the Tara Court on Pratamnak
Rd around 10.00 a.m. Sign up either in O’Gara’s or ring George on 087 540
0844 and he will book you in.

Singapore fling at Greenwood
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
The Pattaya Golf Society started the new
week with visit to Greenwood on Monday, 4th March, to play a stableford
event over the B and C nines on a warm humid day. There was just a single
flight and scores were destined to be good on the course where the greens
have improved significantly over the last few months.
In third place was the ever consistent New Zealander Alan Flynn who again
went under par with a solid round of 38 points. In second was Dave Plaiter
with an excellent 39 points but the round of the day was recorded by
Singaporean Larry Ang with 41 fine points representing the eleventh round of
forty or more points with the PGS this year to date. It was a remarkable
performance which also saw him record a birdie ‘2’ on B5 with a chip which
dented the flagstick!
Other birdies on the same hole saw Barry Horman and Dave Moriarty share the
‘2’s pot with the winner.
Back at Rabbi’s Barry Horman took Rabbi’s free beer draw prize and the Booby
Bevy went to Peter Ditz after seeing his 37 point efforts fail to make the
podium. All in all it was a fine way to start the week with the PGS.
Kiwi king at Khao Kheow
A visit to Khao Kheow always warms a golfer’s heart
and on Wednesday, 6th March the Pattaya Golf Society took thirty two players
to its stableford competition on the B and C nines on the fine course. With
the yellow tees back at their maximum and a strong breeze blowing for most
of the round good scores would be at a premium and so it proved.
With the cut at sixteen the second flight saw John Chelo post 30 points for
third place with Yvonne Earley, record-breaker last time at the course,
finishing in second with 31 points. The winner was Alan Walker with a
competent 33 points.
In the top flight three golfers tied for second with Rick Schramm and Robbie
Taylor emulating Martin Grimoldby’s 33 points. Martin posted the best gross
figures of 79. The flight winner was the ever consistent New Zealander Alan
Flynn with 34 points.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and Rabbi’s free beer draw was won by Barry Horman
with Mr Len taking the Booby Bevy in the absence of Jimmy Cloy for the day’s
lowest score.
Khao Kheow is such a joy to play and the group looks forward to the next
visit immensely.
Amazing double header
In an amazing week which began with Larry Ang’s 41
point score at Greenwood on Monday, the Pattaya Golf Society closed the week
on another high on Friday, 8th March, with a double header at Crystal Bay
and Mountain Shadow, because of the former’s inability to cope with the
numbers wanting to play at the quality course.
In the main event the chosen track was the A and B nines which were in
excellent order and good scores once again were there for those who were on
top of their game.
In the top flight, the cut coming at eighteen, Wichai Tananusorn and Dave
Moriarty tied for third place with 33 points each, only to be beaten by the
two fine rounds of Robbie Taylor and Ken Page on 36 points each.
In the second flight Ken Grimes and Phil McClure shared second place with 33
points but all were outsmarted by a rampant Dave Plaiter who played the best
round in his short IPGC career, racking up 42 points for the win. He also
scored the only birdie ‘2’ of the day, on A5.
On the sister course John Chelo was taking third place with 33 points, one
behind Paul Edgar’s second place finish and Jimmy Cloy was recording a
birdie ‘2’ on the eighth hole.
The PGS golfer of the week, Larry Ang was emulating his fine performance at
Greenwood on Monday with another forty-plus haul, this time taking the win
with 42 points. And before the whispering begins the Singapore golfer has a
long history with the PGS, his and many others’ favourite Pattaya golf
group.
Never has there been a week like it and Larry’s score represented the
thirteenth winning score of minus four, or better in the 30 competitions so
far held this year with the PGS and it took nothing away from the other
eleven golfers who have achieved the feat so far. If any group has a better
record they must be damn good!

Treasure of a trip
PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside
Tuesday, March 5, Treasure Hill - Stableford
Tuesday was a trip up the 331 to the testing Treasure Hill, with the whites
being our allocated tees at just over 6700 yards. The course was in good
order, with the greens seeming a little slopier and faster than usual,
especially from above the hole. Weather conditions were ideal for good golf,
but it would be fair to say the course was the winner today.
Clive
& Jonathan.
2 flights, with the cut at 19+, saw a count back decide the higher
handicaps. It was On (26) leading the way 16/15 over George Gamble (22)
after both signed for 30 points, with Brian Maddox (21) getting third spot
another point behind.
The lower handicapper group went to Jeff Wylie (6) with 33; Jim Federspiel
(17) continued his winning form with 31 points, while Bob Edwards (9) got
the bronze with 30 points over Tom & Owen 16/15/12 on count back.
Near Pins went to Dave, Jeff & Joel.
Thursday, March 7, Kabinburi - Stableford
Thursday saw a group from ML travel up to Kabinburi for an
overnighter, with 2 games at KB Sports Club. Again we had great conditions
for golf with clear skies, a nice breeze and a course in good nick with
superb fairways.
On day 1 all men played from the white tees at 6650 yards and it was Jeff
Wylie (6) just edging Clive Hoseason (22) on count back 19/18 after both
signed for 36 points, while Owen Lloyd (6) and his partner On (26) both had
35.
Owen (the golfer) got 2 Near Pins while Willem also got amongst the prizes.
Friday saw some of the men elect to play from the blues at an extra 500
yards, receiving an extra 2 handicap shots. It was Jonathan Pratt (17) with
35 points getting the major prize, while Owen Lloyd (6) got some revenge
over Jeff (6+2) beating him on count back 18/14 after both signed for 34.
Jeff got amongst the Near Pins from the blues while Owen also got one. All
agreed it was an enjoyable trip and look forward to further excursions in
the future, from our new base at Rendezvous Restaurant & Bar.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on Tuesday & Thursday, with ML
hosting prompt presentations on both days. As a PSC affiliated venue we
welcome ALL golfers, including ladies & seniors who have opted for the
“Silver” tee option. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to
see you there, cheers & good golfing!

The Snowbird warms up to Green Valley
PSC golf from The Golf Club
Steve Ellison
Monday, March 4, Green Valley (white tees) – Stableford
1st Bob Patterson (8) 40pts
2nd Mike Newbert (14) 39pts
T3rd Ken Aihara (6) 38pts
T3rd Jay Burns (3) 38pts
T3rd Michael Hastie (19) 38pts
T3rd Peter Rogers (23) 38pts
First order of business, don’t forget our annual Songkran trip to Khao Yai
leaving here on the 15th and returning to Pattaya on the 20th of April. This
is our yearly escape from the madness of the ever so long water dousing that
has become an intolerable facet of the calendar here in Pattaya. See all the
details on our facebook.com page, but the gist of it is 5 nights hotel with
breakfast and 4 rounds of golf for just 10,500 baht.
February
Monthly Medal winner John Emmerson with Polly.
This week at Green Valley, we all played off the white
tees, so a whopping six places were on offer for Pattaya’s finest golfers.
It was another beautiful day for golf as the partly cloudy skies gave the
occasional respite from Mr. Sunshine. We have quite pleasant weather of
late, and so it should be for this time of year.
It was an American Snowbird (as we called the wintering Canadians in
Florida) who shot the lights out and had a big red 40 circled at the top of
his scorecard to claim victory on the day. The affable Bob Patterson, native
of a chilly Green Bay, Wisconsin, joins us in our sleepy little fishing
village every year for at least the past dozen. Bob is the man you want in
your 4-ball if you are on the unwell side of life, as he serves as an
emergency medical technician. Well played to the lifesaver Bob, and come
back soon buddy.

Paul Walsh - B Flight winner
on Friday..
There were also many familiar names after Mr. Patterson; Mike Newbert had a
very creditable 39 that normally guarantees a podium placing here. A quartet
of 38’s saw Ken Aihara, Jay “Cohiba” Burns, Michael “Don’t be” Hastie, and
Peter Rogers tied for 3rd. Another great bunch of guys who joined us for a
great day of golf in fun city, so thanks lads for your support!
Friday, March 8, Khao Kheow (white tees) – Stableford
A Flight
1st Keith Emerson (12) 38pts
2nd Yoshi Watanabe (17) 37pts
3rd Peter Hynard (13) 36pts
B Flight
1st Paul Walsh (20) 36pts
2nd Jack Robertson (23) 33pts
3rd Peter Rogers (23) 31pts
A good strong field proved for 2 flights today to take on the challenge of
Khao Kheow. Only 2 of the gang shot better than their handicap, as K.K. once
again proved to be a tough test of the game. This Pete Dye layout is one of
the best in Thailand and is always a popular venue for our golf outings.
Keith Emerson was the best of the A Flight with 38 points and Paul Walsh
shot his handicap for the victory in the B Flight. Thanks for joining us for
another great week of golf in Pattaya!
Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro. We usually play on Monday,
Wednesday and Friday so come join us for a seriously fun day out. Just call

Sweetnam tastes victory
at Crystal Bay
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Monday, March 4, Plutaluang -
Stableford
We were back on the West and North courses today after a change from last
month’s rounds and with 44 players there were three divisions out today with
the cut at 5-15, 16-20 and 21 plus.
Playing off the white tees with three shots added to her handicap and with a
difference of a thousand yards, Miss Nut on 25 won division 3 with 41
points. Glenn Martin took second on 38 points and Sid Ottaway was third with
34.
Billy Fitzgerald topped division 1 with 38 points after beating Paul Butler
on a 18/15 back nine count back and Wilf Latham came in third with a 19/17
count back win over the boy going back to the UK for two months for some
arithmetic lessons, Pete Sumner.
Walter Webber won division 2 with 37 points ahead of Rudi Schaefer in second
place who topped Randy Flello on a 19/18 back nine count back after they
both returned scores of 36.
Near pins went to Wilf Latham, Lindsay Phillips, Dennis Scougal, Horst
Starchl, Jim Connelly, Miss Nut, Sid Ottaway and Walter Webber.
Walter Webber recorded the only ‘2’ of the day to take the max pot in
division 2 after a birdie on the 6th on the North course.
Wednesday, March 6, Crystal Bay -
Stableford
There has been a lot of positive feedback recently regarding the condition
of this course and we returned today to be allocated the A and B courses,
which pleased most. Everyone was impressed and with a field of 37 players
there were no moans at all after the round.
The cut was almost identical to Monday’s round for the three divisions and
the best score of the day, with 16 on the front nine and an amazing 25 on
the back, came from Jerry Sweetnam playing off 13 to win division 1 with 41
points. Mike Chatt was second two points behind and Raivo Velsberg took
third place on 36.
Paul Butler won the second division with 38 points ahead of Joe Peters in
second on 35 and Jim Connelly placed third on 31.
The division 3 winner was Randy Flello with 37 points while Roar Berger came
in second on 35 and in third place after his return from central Africa was
Alan Bissell with 34.
Near pins were won by Billy Fitzgerald, Arvo Hiller, Arvo Narep, Jerry
Sweetnam, Randy Flello, Tim Hake, Curtis Hessler and Matti Swire.
In the ‘2’s Billy Fitzgerald, Arvo Narep and Jerry Sweetnam shared the pot
in division 1 and Ken Carr and Matti Swire birdied A8 and A5 to share the
spoils in division 2.
Friday, March 8, Eastern Star -
Stableford
There were only two divisions out today with the cut at 7-16 and 17 plus.
The organiser returned after a two month lay-off to record a historic 24
points while Iain Walsh posted the best score of the day, winning division 2
with 35 points. Rod Howett came in second two points behind Iain and Walter
Webber beat Frank Kelly for third on a 16/15 back nine count back after they
both came in with 31 points.
Bill Bertram was the winner in division 1 with 33 points then there were
three players tied on 32: Chris Voller took second place with 19 on the back
nine after beating Marty Rock with 18 and Mikael Andersson lost out with 16.
Near pins went to Ken Leadstone, Chris Voller, Andy Baber (2), Frank Kelly
and Iain Walsh.
After two nearest the pins wins around four feet away on the 6th and 13th,
Andy was unable to convert either to claim the second division ‘2’s pot but
Ken Leadstone birdied the poorly maintained 13th to win the division 1 pool.

Pattaya hosts second leg of 2013 Thai BMX Championship

Taking a curve at high speed –
all part of BMX racing.
Warunya Thongrod
After launching the competition earlier this year in Saraburi on January 6,
over 300 cyclists made their way to Pattaya last weekend for Round 2 of the
Fisherman’s Friend BMX Thailand Championship 2013.
The event took place at the Pattaya PRC Tower Boat Circuit on Sukhumvit Road
on a newly constructed track that is considered to be one of the best laid
out BMX competition venues in the kingdom.
The sport of BMX racing has witnessed a positive resurgence in this country
since it featured in the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 and has now been
adopted by the Thai Cycling Association (TCA), which considers it a viable
method of attracting young people to the sport of cycling. The event in
Pattaya was broadcast live nationwide through the Thai PBS network.
Pattaya Deputy Mayor Ronakit Ekasingh, along with dignitaries from the TCA,
were among the crowd of many spectators to watch the action live last
Sunday, March 10, as the highly skilled young (and not so young) bikers
battled it out on the state of the art mixed-terrain track.

Cyclists leap over the
undulations during one of the male category races.
The competition was divided into various age and gender
groups with one of the highlights coming in the male general category where
three cyclists from the Thai national team, Narong Klingsurhai, Jakraphet
Witchna and Punyapol Sornkla, were competing against each other.
From the starting gun, Klinsurhai took an early lead, with Witchana
following close behind, but turning into the final curve Klinsurhai
sustained a puncture in his front tire that caused him to fall within sight
of the finish line, allowing Witchana to pass him and go on to claim first
place honors.
There was an equally exciting race in the women’s open category as Thai
national team cyclist Nisha Prasertsri, a winner in the first round, was
pipped on the line by Duangkamol Thongmeematalord after leading for most of
the race.
The next competition, Round 3 of the Fisherman’s Friend BMX Thailand
Championship 2013, will be held in Surin in north-eastern Thailand, followed
by round 4 in Pathum Thani and ending with the finale back at Saraburi. The
cyclists with the highest point tally over the 5 rounds will be awarded the
HRH Princess Sirindhorn Cup.

Senior and junior riders give
encouragement to one another..

Lt. Gen. Phadungsak
Klansanoh, vice president of Thai Cyclist Association under the royal
patronage, presents medals to winning cyclists in the U 14 female category.

‘Dolphins’ downed as Osotspa
stage second half fight back
Thai Premier League Standings March 10 (week 2)

Pattaya United’s Anuwat Inyin
(right) dribbles past Osotspa defenders during the second half of the Thai
Premier League match at the Nongprue Stadium, Sunday, March 10.
Phasakorn Channgam
Pattaya United’s first home game of the 2013 Toyota Thai Premier
League season ended in disappointed for ‘Dolphin’ supporters as a strong
Osotspa M-150 team overturned a half-time deficit to record a 2-1 victory at
Pattaya’s Nongprue Stadium on Sunday, March 10.
It all started so well for United who, buoyed by their win on the opening
day of the season, and playing in front of their own fans for the first time
this year, took the lead on the stroke of half–time when Anuwat Inyin fired
an unstoppable shot from the edge of the Osotspa area into the roof of the
visitors’ net.
Osotspa had spurned chances of their own in the first half and as the second
period got underway they seemed determined to be not so profligate in front
of goal.
Barely seven minutes had elapsed in the second half when Osotspa drew level
through the second superb strike of the match. Suradej Thongchai picked the
ball up 20 yards out from the Pattaya goal and unleashed a thunderbolt that
flew past United keeper past Bong-jun.
Worse was to come for United just 5 minute later as they failed twice to
clear the danger from their own penalty area and Namibian striker Tangeni
Shipahu slipped the ball past Bong-jun to seal all three points for the
visitors.
At other grounds around the country, Chonburi secured a 1-0 home win over
Army to remain unbeaten after two games while defending champions Muang
Thong United maintained their 100% start to the season with a 2-1 away win
at Esan United.
Pattaya United will return to Premier League action on Wednesday, March 27
with an away fixture at BEC Tero Sasana in Bangkok, followed by a home match
on Sunday, March 31 against Army United.
