Next week is the final week of the present league and Brother D, VFW
Post 9876, Green Tree and Bavaria will be fighting for the three team
trophies. Brother D and VFW will be playing for first and second place.
This past week Brother D gained a point over second place VFW after
winning all four points from Mitt in 2012 while VFW Post 9876 won three
points from Green Tree. Bavaria is now tied for third place with Green
Tree after they won all four points from Café Kronborg. Bavaria and
Green Tree will be playing for third place.
Tue Pettae bowled a 504 series, well below her handicap, and Wade Meyers
had a 500 series for Brother D. Joe Ferral bowled a 514 series for Mitt
in 2012.
Tui Amphanon bowled a 215 game, 519 series, and Ooy Pluemkamon had a 522
series for VFW. Brand bowling as a spare had a great day with games of
205, 184 and 208 for a 597 series.
Antero Ronkainen bowled a 543 series and Lek Reaper had a 511 to lead
Canada to a four point win over Indiana. Sorry to report neither team is
in the trophy race.

Nellis turns up the gas
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
The Pattaya Golf Society visited Khao
Kheow on Monday, 19th November hoping to find the course in better condition
than when they last played there a month ago. It was pleasing to see
conditions much improved on the C and B nines with GUR clearly marked and
greens which were well up to standard.
So it was then that the field was divided into two flights at sixteen and
under, the second flight going off the more comfortable white tees whilst
the low handicappers played from the yellow tees.
In the top flight Dave Lehane scored 35 points to take third place whilst
Steve Jones and Richard “Banjo” Bannister went head-to-head within their
group to finish joint top with forty prodigious points each. “Banjo”
recorded the best gross of the day with his 79.
In the second flight Larry Ang put together a consistent round of 36 points
for third place whilst Leigh Abbey managed 39 points on his return from
Australia to take second place. The winner was Don Nellis, taking a brief
timeout from his full time work as an air miles accumulator, and he produced
his best ever result with 41 points. He had the added bonus of two birdie
‘2’s on the C course par threes whilst he shared the ‘2’s loot with Alan
Flynn (C8) and Larry Ang (B8).
Rabbi’s free beer draw went to Ken Grimes, who generously declined in favour
of Mr Len, for whom the Booby Bevy was reserved after the day’s largest
split figures.
It was good to see Khao Kheow up for it again and when the dry season
eventually arrives it will be a joy to visit there again with the PGS.
Joy for the Jones boys
The Pattaya Golf Society made a long awaited
return to Plutaluang on Wednesday, 21st November to play a stableford
competition over the West and North Nines, in two flights divided at
seventeen and under. The weather was warm and humid and the course was in
fair condition with fairways still soft after the recent deluges and greens
which were very slow by comparison with others in the area.
In the second flight Pat Murphy and lady golfer Margaret Wilkinson pushed
the leaders close but Leigh Abbey managed 28 points on his first visit for
his first podium place with the group whilst Mr Len took the top place with
a moderate 30 points.
In the top flight Jesper Hansen continued his good form with 32 points for
third place whilst “Banjo” Bannister went one better with 33 in second. The
best score of the day came from a man in form, Steve Jones. He has never had
a week like this one in all his six years of Thailand golf and followed 40
points on Monday with 38 points this time.
Dave Plaiter took the second flight birdie ‘2’ pot with an excellent effort
on N6 and the top flight ‘2’s pot was shared by Wichai Tananusorn (N3) and
Rick Schramm (N6).
Rabbi’s free beer draw was enjoyed by Yasuo Suzuki on his final appearance
before a return to Japan and the Booby Bevy went to Don Nellis for his “hero
-to-zero” performance which saw Monday’s winner register a full 20 points
less this time. He wasn’t the only one all at sea at the tough Royal Thai
Navy course at Plutaluang.
Tip top Talbot
Following a misunderstanding with a booking at Crystal Bay the Pattaya Golf
Society rapidly redirected to Greenwood on Friday, 23rd November to play a
stableford competition on the A and B nines. The greens are still not right
but the course is getting better after a shabby low season.
Sharing third place were Pat Murphy and Larry Ang with 34 points each and
Pat recording the day’s only birdie ‘2’ with a chip-in on B5. One point
ahead was Neil McIntosh with 35 points, proving he has more than found his
feet with the group after joining the group only three months ago. The
winner was Brian Talbot who, earlier in the day, had shunned an opportunity
to join the PGS representatives in the John Preddy Memorial event being held
at Mountain Shadow, preferring to try his hand at Greenwood. Forty-one
points seems to prove his choice correct!
The day was splendidly supervised by Rick Schramm in the absence of the
usual incumbent and he awarded the Booby Bevy to Khun Wichai for the
luckiest shot of the day which gave him a birdie on A9. Well done
“Rocketman” and thanks from all the lads.

3rd Steven Montcelli (15) 35pts
4th Dave Driscoll (15) 35pts
Near Pins: No 4 Dave Chalmers; No 9 Patrick Kelly; No 12 John
Stewart; No 16 Brian Cooper
She won the Red Flight monthly medal as recently as last Sunday and now
Sim Davis has come back and won again! Normally everyone likes to see
the victories spread around but this was an instance certainly for those
who knew when the society couldn’t have been happier. Certainly
condolences to Colm ‘the Right Honorable’ Mullen whose solid 37 points
took the B Flight silver - Colm has yet to reach the top podium spot
this visit to the Land of Smiles, but surely it must just be just around
the corner.
Dave Driscoll, who also appeared in this column last week, was edged to
the fourth place via a count back defeat to Steven Montcelli.
John Stewart snuck 37 points into the senior flight stack and came up
the winner. He was followed by Pierre ‘the Magicians’ better half Yui
who came up a stoke short, but gained the silver via a count back
victory over the unlucky Kris K. Jan ‘the quite one’ Erikssen made a bit
of noise as he closed the flight.
John Stewart and Jim Bell a brace, Clinton Haslett, Patrick Kelly and
Mark Wood shared the 2’s pot.

Monday, Nov. 19, Khao Kheow A&C -
Stableford
A Flight
1st Kevin McEntee (8) 37pts
2nd Francis Goyons (8) 36pts
3rd Seamus Lanagan (12) 35pts
B Flight
1st Gerry Rafferty (17) 36pts

C Flight
1st Keith McLachlan (23) 37pts
2nd Liam Farrell (24) 36pts
3rd Jim Elphick (25) 33pts
The Co. Offaly gang left Pattaya to try their luck in the Philippines
for a short stay; how they got on is a closely guarded secret. On
returning Monday, the ring leader Kevin ‘you know who’ McEntee picked up
where he left off by standing atop the flagship flight podium with a
co-best of the day 37 points. Kevin’s fine effort barely edged 2nd place
finisher Francis Goyons Francis who in turn edged Seamus Lanagan to the
bronze; thank goodness Seamus had a 2.
Gerry Rafferty beat his European Union compatriots (they are all
compatriots come Ryder Cup time) Matt Cronin and Ian Woosnam’s ex caddy
Lee Addelly (no not the caddie that put the extra club in Ian’s bag) in
a three-way B Flight count back. Matt Cronin took the silver as Lee
settled for the bronze.
Keith McLachlan made himself right at home by being the top man in C
Flight on the day and co-man of the match. Keith needed nearly every
point to better a fast closing Liam Farrell. Jimmy ‘two shots’ Elphick
gratefully accepted the bronze as he closed the flight.
Along with Seamus, Kevin McEntee, Ian Dallas, Bob Fagan and Keith
McLachlan helped themselves to a share the 2’s pot.
Wednesday, Nov. 21, Pattana - Stableford
A Flight
1st Seamus Lanagan (12)38 pts
2nd John Bahng (13) 37pts
3rd J-P Gasser (12) 36pts
B Flight
1st Matt Cronin (14) 37pts
2nd Gerry Rafferty (12) 35pts
3rd Nick Odnoral (14) 34pts
C Flight
1st John O’Mahoney (20) 38pts
2nd Christy Knight (20) 37pts
3rd Leon Vorters (22) 34pts
Seamus Lanagan and John O’Mahoney were co-men of the match as they both
posted 38 points on the day, in the senior circuit and C Flight
respectively; Seamus bettering Monday’s third place finish. Seamus was
followed closely up the podium steps by everyone’s favourite, John
Bahng. J-P Gasser’s bid for the third place was almost lost, save for a
beneficial count back over the unlucky Ger Jones.
Not to be outdone, C Flight had its own 38 points on the card signed by
John O’Mahoney. Christy ‘good’ Knight came in a shot shy to fill the
flight silver spot. Leon Vorters closed the flight with 34 points.
In B Flight we saw a reversal of fortunes from Monday’s game as Matt
Cronin moved up to the top of the podium and Gerry Rafferty slipped down
to the second tier. Nick Odnoral rounded out the flight on a count back
as Gerry Mernagh was left out as the bridesmaid.
Each flight contained a share of the 2’s pot in Pierre Bietry, Jimmy Day
and Mitch Squire.
Friday, Nov. 23, Treasure Hills - Stableford
A Flight
1st James O’Mahoney (7) 37pts
2nd Andy Byrne (8) 35pts
3rd JP Gasser (12) 35pts
B Flight
1st John O’Mahoney (20) 37pts
22d Peter Henshaw (20) 36pts
3rd Dave Norman (17) 36pts
C Flight
1st James Elphick (25) 37pts
2nd Keith McLachlan (23) 34pts
3rd Mick Coghlan (26) 32pts
James O’Mahoney, John O’Mahoney and Jimmy ‘2 shots’ Elphick were all
co-men of the match as they won A, B and C Flights respectively, as they
all posted 37 points on the very tough Treasure Hills layout. As though
one ‘Mick’ on the A Flight podium was not enough, who should attain the
second step but the omnipresent Co. Offaly gang member Andy Byrne by way
of a count back verdict over the luckless J-P Gasser.
John O’Mahoney made it a handful of Mick’s at the pay window with his B
Flight winning 37 points. Peter ‘Don O’corleone’ Henshaw, much like his
A Flight mates, edged Dave Norman into the bronze position via a
favorable count back.
The Queen finally had a representative on the podium as Jimmy ‘2 shots’
Elphick topped C Flight with his own 37 points. Keith McLachlan was the
somewhat distant silver medalist, although his score should be credited
with being 2 shots clear of Mick Coghlan and the charismatic Fergus
O’Brien. Mick had the better of the count back mathematics.
Peter Kelly, John O’Mahoney and Ken Hole as you would expect with a
moniker like that shared the 2’s pot.

PSC golf from The Golf Club

Jay Burns, Henry O’Brien, and
Martin Zimmerman.
Steve Ellison
Joe Mooneyham, our fearless Golf Chairman of the Pattaya Sports Club and
Andrew Pitts, Director of Golf Operations at Amata Spring recently dropped

just an hours’ drive down the road!
There are dozens of us who will be marshals and volunteers for the event, so
if you are interested in participating then call Joe as soon as possible. We
will provide transportation every day of the tournament so drop by TGC and
sign up for this great golfing experience.
If you just want to go down and have a look, there will be Bubba Watson, Lee
Westwood, Hunter Mahan, Darren Clarke, Sergio Garcia, John Daly, Schwartzel,
Ishikawa, Oosthuizen, Jaidee and the rest so get yer butts down there for a
great time. Joe and Andrew dropped off loads of free passes for the event so
come on by and pick them up from us, or head on over to the PSC offices on
Third Road. Thank you Pattaya Sports Club!
Monday, Nov. 19, Green Valley
(Blue/ White tees) – Stableford
Blue Tees
1st Jay Burns (1) 34pts
White Tees
1st Michael Hastie (18) 37pts
2nd Henry O’Brien (21) 37pts
3rd Martin Zimmerman (16) 34pts
A lot of guys will be happy to read that Jay Burns has now left the
building. Damn, this guy is a good golfer and is always a contender, not a
pretender. Jay took the top spot from the Blue Tees on the day so notch up
another victory on the gunslingers belt once again. Jay, it’s always great
to have ya play with us buddy and we hope to see you soon.
For the rest of us mere mortals who play from the White Tees, it was a tie
between Michael Hastie and that legendary Scotsman, Henry O’Brien (no
relation to O’Bama) for top spot at a credible 37 Stableford points.
Also, many thanks to our Australian mate Michael Hastie for helping us with
our new Cisco Systems modem and router so we now have a fast and reliable
wifi connection. I owe you a steak or two mate! Our Canadian mate Martin
Zimmerman also had a good round with 34 points to round off the table.
Martin is here now for several months and is settling in nicely in his new
Jomtien abode so hey man, chill out and have another cigar!

Mark “Woody” Sherwood, Peter
Hanson, Chaten Patel and the missus in India.
Wednesday, Nov. 21, Silky Oaks (White
tees) – Stableford
1st Ken Aihara (5) 39pts
T2nd Michael Hastie (18) 35pts
T2nd Chaten Patel (12) 35pts
Well, it looks like Silky Oaks is becoming a regular new venue for us and
the feedback we are getting is very positive. We like dealing with the
management at this complex and they are working with us for favourable rates
in the high season. I must admit to being skeptical with the whole concept
of this layout at first, but the votes are in and Silky Oaks gets top marks.
We said “Ohio-gozai-mas” to Ken-San this morning and a “gambata-ney” later
our pal walks off the course with a big 39 circled at the top of his card.
That’s enough to win a whole bunch of those TGC Handsome Man Vouchers and to
claim another first place finish. Well done Kenny!
But wait, didn’t we see that name of Michael Hastie on the podium just a
couple of days back? Here he is again after Monday’s 1st and in the prizes
once again in his 2nd. He obviously needs to spend more time helping us with
the internet. We can’t forget Chaten, who tied for second, and is pictured
with our mate Woody who caddied for Peter Hanson in India a few weeks back.
Just shows you what a swell guy Peter Hanson is. Hey Chaten, nice shirt!
Friday, Nov. 23,
The Emerald (White tees) – Stableford
1st Ian Brimble (7) 38pts
2nd Mick Robinson (16) 36pts
3rd Bill Eyles (25) 35pts
4th Pierre Ceres (11) 35pts
Another fun day of golf and off to the Emerald we go! This is not an easy
course by any measure, and I was wondering how several new boys would react
to this track. The consensus was that all were impressed with the wonderful
collection of par 3’s on this layout, but a chunk of money was needed to
make it a truly great course. And therein lies the dilemma, getting the
balance right so that there are reasonable green fees and a well maintained
course.
Not every course will be up to the standards of Siam CC, but that’s a good
thing as it will give us some low cost golf on a decent track to test our
skills.
Ian Brimble showed the most skill on the day as he turned in his card of 38
hard earned points to win the comp outright. That’s a great score on this
tough course mate, well done. And thanks also to Ian for ringing the bell
after Phil’s announcement of his victory for drinks all round.
Thanks for joining us for another week of millionaire’s golf in Pattaya!
Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro. We usually play on Monday,
Wednesday and Friday so come join us for a seriously fun day out. Just call

Jimmy Little’s big win
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
Monday, Nov. 19, Burapha - Stableford
Not that many Outbackers or any other players at Burapha today, as only the
C & D nines were open. The 20 who did play here would have had every reason
to have been disappointed with the condition of the course, particularly the
C loop, where the greens were only ordinary.

Jimmy Little.
The weather was mostly OK apart from a heavy shower lasting about 10
minutes, which caused a minor disruption to a couple of groups about halfway
through the round.
Jimmy Little found himself in elevated company; a group which included two
of the three single figure handicappers in the field, namely Steve & Paul
and they must have spurred him on to return one of his best rounds in a long
time as Jimmy posted the day’s best score (42pts) to comfortably win Div B
by a massive 8pts. Second was Pete Stonebridge (34) and third was Steve
Milne on 33.
Div A, whilst not attaining high scoring, was more consistent with every
player bar one scoring 30pts or more and the surprised winner, Bob St.
Aubin, thought he had blown it when previous thoughts of the last three
holes on the D loop, confounded him again as he wiped both the 16th & 17th
before recovering with a par on the long 18th. So Bob made the win with
36pts from Capt’ Steve on 35 and John Cunningham with 34.
There were six ‘2’s: two on the 5th (C5) from Paul Bourke & Stephen Mann,
three on the 11th (D2) from Keith Allen, Kev Reid & Bob St. Aubin and one on
the 17th (D8) from Jon Kittilsen.
Div A (0-14)
1st Bob St. Aubin (14) 36pts
2nd Stephen Mann (8) 35pts
3rd John Cunningham (7) 34pts
Div B (15+)
1st Jimmy Little (19) 42pts
2nd Pete Stonebridge (15) 34pts
3rd Steve Milne (15) 33pts

Friday winners (from left):
Martin Kingswood, Sugar Ray and Andy Butterworth.
Tuesday, Nov. 20, Khao Kheow - Stableford
With PCC dropped from our regular calendar for the time being, Khao Kheow
has taken over the regular Tuesday slot but the course still remains
relatively unpopular with only 8 Outbackers trying their luck. Today we
started on B and then onto C so everyone had time to warm up before the
dreaded first hole on C. I had the pleasure of playing with the Captain
today and we were both pulling up weeds on the fairways, very therapeutic
while you are waiting for your second shot but neither of us played well.
The course is still undergoing work in many areas but the greens were as
good as any at the moment, with the Capt’ reckoning as good if not better
than Siam Plantation’s and very quick as well..
Welcome to Donovan from Australia playing with us for the first time today
and well done to Bob Lindborg for his win today, even if it was only 32pts;
Jimmy Little, cut 2 shots for his big win yesterday at Burapha, found
himself in second with just 30 and he also had the only ‘2’ on B8.
1st Bob Lindborg (18) 32pts
2nd Jimmy Little (17) 30pts
3rd Bob Finley (16) 29pts
Wednesday, Nov. 21, Greenwood – Stableford
The excellent high season rate prompted 11 Outbackers up the 331 today to
play the B & A nines at Greenwood; the course was in good condition on both
loops but sadly the greens on A had been sanded which let the course down
slightly.
The scoring was not brilliant with Paul Greenaway’s 34pts being enough to
secure the win followed home by Eddy Beilby with 33 who beat playing
partner, Peter LeNoury on count back.
There were no ‘2’s.
1st Paul Greenaway (7) 34pts
2nd Eddy Beilby (18) 33pts
3rd Peter LeNoury (11) 33pts
Wednesday, Nov. 21, Siam Plantation - Stableford
10 Outbackers came to play the B & C nines at Siam Plantation, which was
slightly disappointing bearing in mind the deal that the Outback have on
offer. The course was busier than usual and a little damp in places, which
was hardly surprising given the regular storms we have been getting.
Dave Coller, who admitted that this was his kind of course, showed his
liking for the venue with a very fine 38pts, matched by two members here,
Steve Poznanski & Tom Fitzpatrick, but Dave took the honours on count back.
In fourth was another Plantation member, Rosco on 36.
There were no ‘2’s.
1st David Coller (24) 38pts
2nd Steve Poznanski (14) 38pts
3rd Tom Fitzpatrick (14) 38pts
4th Rosco Langoulant (14) 36pts
Friday, Nov. 23, Green Valley – Stableford
35 players to Green Valley and the starter let us go early so a perfect
start for the day. The day was great for golf, a little overcast with a
light breeze and the sun stuck its nose through the clouds a few times just
to warm up the day and just to cool us down we had a little sprinkle about
halfway round for one hole.
The course was again presented very well, with well manicured fairways, tees
and rough, bunkers were all raked and washouts fixed and the greens were
flat and true if just a little different pace between the back and front
nines. Hopefully the course will maintain its great condition as next week
is the Monthly Medal round. The scores reflected the quality of the course
and a number of players shot better than handicap.
Welcome back to Jeff Acheson & Maurice Copan and also to Paul Sibley, Mick
Benton & Ian Humphrey.
Three Divisions plus the ‘2’s and leading the way with the best score of the
day was Martin Kingswood with 43 points off his 14 handicap which won
division 2 from Bob Finley on 37 points, who beat Joe Mooneyham on a count
back for second.
Division 3 saw a return to form for Sugar Ray Handford as the winner with 36
points off his 18 handicap from Sean Murphy with 35 points, with Terry Phur
completing the placings with 32.
Division 1 was won by Andy Butterworth with 38 points; Andy had 38 off the
stick on the front nine for 25 points and then dragged the anchor on the
back, scoring only 13 points. Dennis Pelly took second place with 37 points
and the consistent Paul Greenaway finished third with 35.
There were three ‘2’s to Andy Butterworth and Ed Horrocks on hole 9 and Ian
Humphrey on hole 16.
Div A (0-13)
1st Andy Butterworth (13) 38pts
2nd Dennis Pelly (10) 37pts
3rd Paul Greenaway (7) 35pts
Div B (14-16)
1st Martin Kingswood (14) 43pts
2nd Bob Finley (16) 37pts
3rd Joe Mooneyham (15) 37pts
Div C (17+)
1st Sugar Ray Handford (18) 36pts
2nd Sean Murphy (28) 35pts
3rd Terry Phur (20) 32pts
Note: The Outback Golf Bar is situated about 6km from Sukhumvit Road along
Soi Siam Country. Call Jack on 087 941 2474.

Richardson top scores at Phoenix
Travellers Rest Golf Group
Andy Rich
All the locals have been telling me that they cannot recall the last time
the rainy season went on this long into November and I, who have spent the
last seven Novembers in Thailand, can vouch for that. It hasn’t stopped the
farangs arriving in their droves though and numbers have shown a marked
increase this past week on the golf courses around Pattaya. It does appear,
however, that it is the better golfers with their longer drives and more
accurate approach shots to the greens that are mastering the conditions far
better than the average holiday golfer. As one of the latter category I can
also vouch for that.
Dorsey
Richardson.
On Monday 19th November the TRGG headed off to Emerald and nearly had to
call it a day after playing the first sixteen or seventeen holes when the
deluge came down. Their balls were aquaplaning across the greens and
shuddering to a halt after the first two or three feet which did tend to
completely ruin some good scorecards. One of those longer hitting low
handicappers, Ian Bell (7) managed to swim back to the clubhouse with a
tremendous 37pts to take first place. Fergus Brennan (10), despite a bad
finish in the conditions, rowed back in with 34pts to take second and Robert
Bjorkqvist (11) paddled into third place with 33pts.
On Tuesday 20th November it was the turn of Treasure Hills to play host.
Always a very tricky test of golf you can feel a real sense of achievement
if you can shoot your handicap on this course, never mind when it is wet
underfoot and playing long. So take a bow Robbie James (10) and Mike Rushant
(12) who finished one and two respectively on 36pts, with Robbie winning on
count back. For the second day running Robert Bjorkqvist (11) came in third
on 33pts.
Thursday 22nd November saw the largest field of the week head off to Phoenix
to play Mountain and Lakes. Unfortunately, and I can’t say exactly who was
slowing the whole field down whether it was some of our own members or
whether it was those put out ahead of us, but it did turn into a five hour
round for those at the back of the field. I was lucky to be paired with two
very good golfers and I could see them both lose the will to live the longer
the round went on. It is so difficult to keep the momentum going when you
are waiting on every shot.
Such was the size of the field that it required two divisions. Division 1
was for up to 13 handicap and Division 2 was 14 handicap and above. Ben
Durham (11) took the Division 1 honours with 36pts, John Dean (8) was second
on 34 and Hugh Byrne was third, also 34pts. In Division 2, Dorsey Richardson
(19) was the best of the bunch with 37pts, Ted Senior (14) came second with
35 and Ken Brehm (20) was third on 32.
After the high scores posted on previous weeks at Phoenix it was a complete
mystery why in such a large field no one bettered 37pts when conditions were
almost perfect, except for the slow play of course.
Another large field paid our monthly visit to Mountain Shadow on Saturday
24th November. Paul Stanton (14) continued his rich vein of form by taking
first place on 36pts, beating Robert Bjorkqvist (12) into second on count
back. Poor old Robert always the bridesmaid - better luck next week Robert!
Nigel Bennet (13) finished third on 35pts.

Ken & Kae sparkle at Crystal Bay
PSC Golf from The Growling Swan

Pat Kavanagh, Kae & Ken
Bernek.
Peter Blackburn
Monday, Nov. 19, Crystal Bay B & A – Stableford
After torrential rain in Pattaya and its surrounds the previous
day, we were all a bit worried about our Monday golf but as usual we were
worrying over nothing. It was fine but overcast as we assembled at The
Growling Swan and even though our numbers were a bit depleted at 22 we were
all looking forward to playing another of our favourite golf courses,
Crystal Bay.
We handed out hearty welcomes to newcomers Pat Kavanagh from Ireland and
Scot Eaton, Vice Captain of Chatswood Golf Club in Sydney, New South Wales,
Australia.
We departed the GS a couple of minutes before our scheduled 8.30 am
departure time and finding Highway No. 3 not too busy for a Monday morning
we arrived at the course 45 minutes later. There was a fair bit of activity
there and after waiting for a couple of Korean groups to tee off we managed
to send our first group, a three-ball, away 8 minutes earlier than booked at
9.52 am.
The weather was perfect, not too hot, very little wind and the golf course
was in excellent condition. There were not many traces of water on the
fairways so maybe the Pattaya downpour of the previous day had not come this
far north and playing conditions were super with the greens firm and true
and at times a tad slick.
We were playing B nine first and were held up at both par 3’s on that nine
but we still managed to get to the half way point in a touch over two hours.
Our second nine was A and the Koreans had disappeared so we stepped up the
pace somewhat and even with a quick drink stop we were able to complete the
full round in just on four hours.
Another very enjoyable round of golf on a great course with good company and
for one of my playing partners, Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei, it was a
spectacular finish to the round as he put his third shot with an eight iron
into the hole on the par 5 A9 for an eagle 3!
We were able to have 2 grades with five podium spots in each. A Grade was
for handicaps 0 to 20 & B Grade was for 21 and over. We had nearest the pins
on all the par threes and longest first putts on A9 and B9 which were
collectively sponsored by The Growling Swan, J J Harney, Takeshi Hakozaki,
Jerry Dobbs, Brendan Byrne & Kae. Many thanks to these golfers for their
generosity.
A welcome return to form for big Ken “let’s hear it for” Bernek saw him win
the A Grade with an excellent 41 points, one point ahead of Irishman J J
Harney in second place. On 39 points came the colorful Bjarne Kjaer in third
place with Frenchman Michael Catillon fourth on 38 points and newcomer Scot
Eaton fifth with 37 points.
Duangjai “Kae” Tusagad won the B Grade with 38 points and Aussie Jerry Dobbs
finished second one point further back. With 2 golfers on 36 points a count
back was necessary to determine third & fourth places and Wendy Bernek (19
point back nine) just pipped Max “Two Corsets” Bracegirdle (18 point back
nine). Another Frenchman, J C Lhoste rounded off the podium, finishing fifth
with 35 points.
I also informed the group about the success of Growling Swan golfers at the
previous Friday’s PSC Monthly Tournament here at Crystal Bay. Our own Wendy
Bernek won the Ladies Flight with Takeshi Hakozaki finishing third in A
Flight. Nearest the pin prizes were won by Max Bracegirdle, Peter Blackburn
and Takeshi Hakozaki – A very good day for the Swan!
A Flight (0-20)
1st Ken Bernek (14) 41pts
2nd J J Harney (12) 40pts
3rd Bjarne Kjaer (20) 39pts
4th Michael Catillon (18) 38pts
5th Scot Eaton (5) 37pts
B Flight (21+)
1st Duangjai Tusagad (30) 38pts
2nd Jerry Dobbs (24) 37pts
3rd Wendy Bernek (34) 36pts
4th Max Bracegirdle (27) 36pts
5th J C Lhoste (23) 35pts
Near Pins: A5 – Pat Kavanagh; A8 – Stu Rifkin; B4 – Mike Gosden; B6 –
Takeshi Hakozaki
Long Putts: A9 – Andre Barril; B9 – Alain Taddei
The Growling Swan NAGA Award, (awarded to the golfer who has the worst score
on the day) was won by newcomer Pat Kavanagh on a count back and believe me
his score was not that bad. Deefa the Dog was once again present and while
being paraded by big Ken he collected many donations to charity for the
needy in Pattaya.
Thursday, Nov. 22, Treasure Hill –
Stableford
On a fine & sunny Pattaya morning we made our way to The Growling
Swan to prepare for the journey to the challenging Treasure Hill Golf Course
and a couple of late cancellations due to illness brought our numbers for
the day back to a very creditable 30.

J
C Lhoste, Ken Cornwall & Mike Gosden.
We welcomed our good friend Walter Baechli back from his cycling tour of
northern Thailand and newcomer George Smails from Newcastle, UK. Our numbers
were once again boosted by 2 groups of Growling Swan ‘Delinquents” who this
time insisted on being together in 1 minivan for reasons best known to
themselves. It was time to farewell Lindsay Fry who is returning to New
Zealand on the weekend and also Eric “Judge” Black and Paul Simons who will
shortly be returning to Geelong, Victoria, Australia.
We departed the GS a couple of minutes early at 8.28 am in 3 full mini vans
and after just 50 minutes arrived at the course where it was very quiet.
After announcing explanations & instructions for the format of the day,
which for the first time included an additional competition of “Divorce
Pairs” our first four-ball got away 5 minutes ahead of schedule at 9.55 am.
The weather was terrific and there was no-one in front of us so we proceeded
at a very good pace, enjoying the condition of the course along the way. The
areas around some of the greens that had received much work were progressing
well and the greens themselves were in very good condition. We took just
under two hours to complete our front nine and with the weather remaining
perfect just had the one drink stop before tackling the “Crocodile Hole”
which most of our group managed to score on for a change (except J J) and we
finished our round in a little under four hours.
It had been a very enjoyable round (particularly with a group of 4
“stirrers”) and the Divorce Pairs format caused plenty of cursing & finger
pointing but it was all good natured. We still played our own individual
stableford game but were paired off within our groups, i.e. the first 2
players in the group were a pair and the next 2 also etc. The idea then was
after completion of a hole the points of one of the pair was multiplied by
the points of their partner. For instance if player 1 has 5 for 2 and their
partner, player 2 has 4 for 3 then 2 x 3 being 6 is their team score for
that hole.
In addition to the Divorce Pairs (sometimes known as Russian Stableford)
competition we were able to have 2 grades, A Grade being for handicaps 0 to
21 and B Grade for golfers with handicaps of 22 and over. We also had
nearest the pins on the four par 3’s and longest first putt awards on the
9th & 18th. These were collectively sponsored by The Growling Swan, Bernie
McCart, Brendan Byrne, Walter Baechli, Ken Bernek & Tony Olcorn and we thank
these golfers for their generosity.
In a tight finish at the top of A Grade with 2 players on 36 points it was
Mike “Hunter” Gosden (18 point back nine) who ended up in first place with
Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei (17 point back nine) in second spot.
Irishman J J Harney was third with 35 points and with 3 golfers on 30 points
it was necessary to have a count back to see who was going to miss out. Stu
Rifkin (17 point back nine) was fourth and Takeshi Hakozaki (16 point back
nine) was fifth with the unlucky one being Brendan “Casper” Byrne (14 point
back nine).
J C Lhoste was too good in the B Grade winning with 34 points and with 3
golfers on 33 points another count back was required. In second place was
Fred Dineley (18 point back nine) with Paul Simons (17 point back nine)
third and Jerry Dobbs (15 point back nine) in fourth spot. In another count
back to decide fifth place it was Max “Two Corsets” Bracegirdle (16 point
back nine) who edged out Bernie McCart (14 point back nine), both having 30
points. With just 2 golfers able to play to their handicap it was the golf
course that once more took the honours on the day.
In the “Divorce Pairs” competition the winners were J C Lhoste & Alain
Taddei with a combined score of 74 points and in a count back for second &
third places with both pairs having 62 points it was Peter Blackburn & J J
Harney (44 point back nine) just beating Mike Gosden & Stu Rifkin (36 point
back nine)
A Flight (0-21)
1st Mike Gosden (12) 36pts
2nd Alain Taddei (18) 36pts
3rd JJ Harney (11) 35pts
4th Stu Rifkin (14) 30pts
5th Takeshi Hakozaki (10) 30pts
B Flight (22+)
1st J C Lhoste (23) 34pts
2nd Fred Dineley (29) 33pts
3rd Paul Simons (23) 33pts
4th Jerry Dobbs (24) 33pts
5th Max Bracegirdle (27) 30pts
Divorce Pairs
1st J C Lhoste & Alain Taddei 74pts
2nd Peter Blackburn & J J Harney 62pts
3rd Mike Gosden & Stu Rifkin 62pts
Near Pins: 2nd – Ken Bernek; 6th – Kae; 13th – J J Harney; 17th – Max
Bracegirdle
Long Putts: 9th – Ken Cornwall; 18th – Peter Blackburn
The Growling Swan NAGA was won by big Ken Cornwall who took it in very good
spirit & insisted on taking the NAGA cap to wear back at the bar for a
while.
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any persuasion – low &
high handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We generally play
Mondays & Thursdays, meeting at The Growling Swan (formerly The Bunker Bar)
in Soi Chaiyapoon at 8.00 am with transport departing at 8.30 am. For
bookings or more information please contact Peter on 0806 351 386 or email

Plummer wins back to back
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

Chuck Anderson, Mike Lewis and
Rod Howett - winners at Phoenix.
Monday, Nov. 19, Phoenix – Stableford
There were 48 players out today so we had three divisions with the
cut at 3-15, 16-20 and 21+ in division three. We were on the Lake and Ocean
nines today and teed off 30 minutes ahead of schedule.
The first two groups came in and there was heavy rain for the next thirty
minutes with thunder and lightning. One group decided to call it a day but
the remaining 11 waited out the storm and finished their round.
Division 1
1st Chuck Anderson 38pts
2nd Wilf Latham 36pts
3rd Raivo Velsberg 35pts
4th Peter Pedder 34pts
Division 2
1st Mike Lewis 38pts
2nd Colin James 36pts
3rd Grant Cadell 34pts
4th Bryan Rought 33pts
Divison 3
1st Rod Howett 32pts
2nd Leo Van der Hague 30pts
3rd Gordon Everingham 29pts
4th Jimmy Johnson 29pts
Near Pins: Paul Butler, Jef Cordeiro, Wilf Latham, Peter Pedder, Kari
Aarnio (2) and Colin James.
Three birdies on Ocean 7 for Paul Butler, Wilf Latham and Lindsay Phillips
gave them a share of the ‘2’s pot in division 1 and Mauri Friman got the
only one in division 2 on the second on the Lakes nine.
Wednesday, Nov. 21, Eastern Star - Stableford
There was a major competition booked here for this Friday so we moved the
normal weekly game to Wednesday this week, only to then be told that the
comp had been cancelled, so we were playing a normal 2 divisional stableford
round on each day with a two-day competition as well.
There were 33 players out with the cut at 3-16 and 17+ and the ‘pick, clean
and place’ ruling came into effect as the course was very sodden.
With his best round ever with us, and in form at the moment, Ian Plummer won
division 2 with 40 points. John Walsh took second on 36 points and the Welsh
boy Mike Lewis beat ‘countback’ Burnie 21/17 on the back nine after they
both scored 35 points.
Frank Kelly topped division 1 with 36 points, Pete Sumner was second one
point behind and Chris Voller was still in the frame with 31 points, beating
Paul Hartley 18/17 on the back nine.
Jef Cordeiro birdied the 17th for the only ‘2’ in division 1 and there was a
rollover in division 2 to Friday.
Near Pins: Jef Cordeiro, Frank Kelly (2), Jerry Sweetnam, Eugine Maguire and
John Walsh.
Friday, Nov. 23, Eastern Star - Stableford
Standing on the first tee today the course looked a lot drier so
we started off with our normal game but after one hole we had to employ
‘pick, clean and place’ as the fairways were very soggy and with many worm
casts as well.
Amazingly the first three in division 2 were the same names as of Wednesday;
Ian Plummer 38, John Walsh 36 and Mike Lewis 34. Chris Voller won division 1
with 36 points, Lindsay Phillips was second on 34 and Chuck Andersson took
third with 33.
Jef Cordeiro and Chris Voller birdied the 3rd to split the ‘2’s pot in
division 1 while in division 2 there were two rollovers to the following
Friday.

Richardson beats his age by one
PSC golf from Café Kronborg
Monday, Nov. 19,
Bangpakong – Stableford
It was off to our favorite - the Bangpakong Riverside course up route 7 for
a little bit over an hour. Despite being a sport day, the course was very
quiet enabling a 5 minute early tee off under overcast skies with a light
breeze, which stiffened as we made the turn. The course is probably the best
maintained in the area, not a blade of grass or a grain of sand out of
place.
back in the clubhouse after a round of less than 4 hours, welcomes went out
to Rita Zoebelli, Kai Aablink from Denmark and Martyn Topham, back for the
winter from Canada.
Two flights today with the cut at handicap 19 and 4 assorted pins. Don
Richardson won the A Flight with the best score of the day, 44 points. Arne
Max Pedersen was second on 41 points, Tore Eliassen third with 38 points and
Maurice Herberg took fourth on a count back from Henry Wong, both on 37
points.
Mick O’Connor took the B Flight with 41 points ahead of Jan Lovgreen in
second on 40 and Daryl Evans claimed third on count back from Martyn Topham
(fourth) and Graham Buckingham (fifth), all with 38 points.

Thursday, Nov. 22, Pleasant Valley –
Stableford
Back to Pleasant Valley again this
week and we teed off 20 minutes early under sunny and humid conditions with
a brief shower late in the round. The course on the day was in fine
condition but very wet from heavy downpours the afternoon before, making
winter rules on the game a necessity.
We made it around in 4 hours and 25 minutes with a slow back nine. Two
flights today with the cut at handicap 18 and a young man 75 years young won
the A Flight as Don Richardson stormed home with 48 points (gross 74) and 1
year under his age. Ted Morris was second with a very good 44 points, Leif
Kirkgaard took third with 42 and Arne Max Pedersen finished fourth on a
count back from Chop Daprakhon, both on 40 points.
Joe Vandewegon won the B Flight with 42 points ahead of Tom Cotton second on
41, Graham Buckingham third with 40 and Dave Richardson fourth on 37 points.
A Flight (0-20)
1st Don Richardson (14) 48pts
2nd Ted Morris (16) 44pts

The Captain bags a brace
Golf from The Billabong Golf Bar

John Locke and Cap’t Bob.
Monday, Nov. 19, Eastern Star -
Stableford
We played Eastern Star for the first time in
months and it was in good condition and playing well. We only had two groups
today and were away early in good weather but that was to change as we made
the turn as the storm coming at us was looking very bad to say the least.
The first group got a bit damp on the tenth green and carried on to the
11th, playing that hole with just a little rain, but the guys behind stopped
as it was raining very hard. When we got to the green there was nothing at
all and on the 12th the sun was shining but it was still raining like hell
on the 10th and 11th. Quite weird really!
It was goodbye today to Steve Compton who is going back to the States for a
few months, I think to sharpen up his game as 22 points nearly got the
wooden spoon, but not quite as that dubious honour went to Kev Wild with 21
points. The winner was the Capt himself, Bob Philip, with 37 points and
coming second was Bob Pearce on 33 points, then John Locke and Mike O’Brian
with 31 points.
Wednesday, Nov. 21, Green Valley - Stableford
Playing our regular venue of Green Valley today,
which was as usual in great condition, although we still played winter
rules, i.e. lift and clean on the fairways. There were four groups with no
‘2’s being recorded today so all the loot went on prizes.
The Aussie boys took the honour’s with Linsay taking first place with 36
points on a count back from Kiwi Bill. Davo took third with 35 points and
coming in forth was George Barrie on a count back from Jim Peachy. We had to
say goodbye to Jim today as he is going back to Townsville to the heat. Take
care mate!
George Barrie’s new golf clubs are doing the trick with George being in the
money on two outings. It was stated at the bar that out of our leading group
there was only one golfer who hit a par 3, no wonder there were no ‘2’s from
that group.
Friday, Nov. 23, Plutaluang - Stableford
It was the Navy at its best on Friday as we played
the West and North courses. While the West side is not everyone’s favourite
there was nothing wrong with the condition of the course apart from it being
a bit sloppy in places, but playing from the white tees it is a long way
round.
The worst score of the day came from a good friend of mine who is here on
his pilgrimage from the Isle of White - It was a round you would like to
forget mate but 14 points total must have been a hard day at the office.
George, it’s about time those new club’s lost some of their shine but having
just 20 points was a bit too much, you can’t blame them for that score.
The winners today were third place Bob Pearce with 34 points, second was
Jeff North with 35 and coming first was the Capt with 36 points.
There were no ‘2’s again today – that must be some sort of a record, three
games of golf with 60 something golfers and not a ‘2’ among them.
Note: The Billabong Golf Bar is situated on the Mabprachan Lake on
the dark side. Just call in and put your name down on the list or give Bob a
call on 082 204 3411. We play Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Freddy flays the field to win John Preddy trophy
PSC golf from the Bunker Boys @ The Ranch

Winning team, Rigsby’s
Rogues (Rigsby at the back)
Monday, Nov. 19, Eastern Star –
Stableford
An almost full turnout of golfers as 31 players set off for what was to
turn out to be an interesting, and at times exciting, round.
The eight groups tee’d off on schedule under bright cloudy skies, but by
the time the first groups reached the third hole the rain arrived.
Fortunately, it was only necessary to stop for 10 minutes, and the round
continued smoothly, until some very threatening dark clouds started to
gather on the inward nine. The thunder and lightning was very close by,
and although no rain arrived, several of the more sensible groups took
shelter for 15 minutes until the storm passed.
One of the cavalier players, who chose to play through the lightning,
was heard to comment on how difficult it was to putt when one’s bum is
tightly puckered. The simple answer is that you don’t mess around with
lightning on a golf course, and what’s the point of taking a chance,
when you only have to wait a few minutes to carry on without risk to
life or limb.
The round was eventually completed in bright sunshine and the main topic
of conversation back at The Ranch was unsurprisingly, tropical storms -
and when are they going to stop this year!
A Flight
1st Gerry Cooney (12) 37pts
2nd Paul Smith (5) 34pts
3rd Neil Hurst (12) 34pts
B Flight
1st Paul Edgar (17) 30pts
2nd Les Burns (30) 27pts
3rd Gary Leigh (17) 26pts
Near Pins: Colin Greig, Gerry Cooney, Neil Hurst and Keith
Smithson.
Wednesday, Nov. 16, The Emerald –
Stableford
A late change of venue was necessary when we were unable to
secure the extra tee times we required at Khao Kheow, so we opted to
switch to the Emerald course. Our last visit to Emerald was at the end
of September, and at that time the course was severely damaged and we’d
decided to give it a rest for a while. We’d heard recent reports that
the course was recovering, so today was an ideal opportunity to assess
the progress made.

Individual winner,
Freddy.
Unfortunately we were disappointed to find that the course hasn’t fully
recovered, although some of the damaged areas around the greens are
starting to improve. The fairways were muddy and soft following recent
heavy rains, so conditions were far from ideal. All in all it’s going to
be a couple more months at best before the course gets anywhere near
back to it’s previous condition, which is sad because most players would
rate it as one of their favourite local venues.
Ex-Bunker Boys champion John Hughes rediscovered some form to record the
best score of the day, one point ahead of Keith Smithson, and they were
the only two golfers to play to their handicap on the day.
A Flight
1st Keith Smithson (2) 36pts
2nd Gerry Cooney (12) 35pts
3rd Paul Smith (5) 34pts
B Flight
1st John Hughes (17) 37pts
2nd Gary Leigh (17) 35pts
3rd Mike Corner (18) 33pts
Near Pins: Geoff Hart, Gerry Cooney, Roger Touhey and Paul Smith.
Friday, Nov. 16 - 7th John Preddy Memorial Charity
Tournament
A full field of 72 players assembled at Mountain Shadow to
compete in the annual competition for the coveted John Preddy trophy,
and to raise funds for the A.T.T.C. charity. We were generously
supported by our sponsors, KPK Foods, Indophil Resources, The Ranch,
DHL, and the Triangle Bar, so there were some great technical and lucky
draw prizes available.
The players were competing in 4-man teams for the individual Stableford
competition and a simultaneous team competition (best 3 individual
scores on each hole). After the usual last minute cancellations,
substitutions, and late arrivals all the teams eventually got away and
the course was in good condition and relatively clear, so the only
holdups were caused by our own slower teams.
Both the individual and team competitions were keenly contested and some
great scores were returned. Even the novelty competition on the 18th
hole (nearest the tree) required a winning shot from Thomas Nyborg which
ended up touching the tree - and leaving him no second shot!
There was a great turnout for the presentation and free buffet back at
The Ranch, and Buff did us proud with a great spread of food, which was
almost (but not quite) totally consumed by the hungry golfers. The
raffle was a great success (thanks to a great job by Gordon and Marion
selling the tickets) and we’ll publish the details of the funds raised
for A.T.T.C. in a later report.
Individual Comp
1st Freddy (20) 43pts
2nd Owen Walkeley (10) 40pts
3rd John Hughes (17) 38pts
Team Comp
1st Rigsby’s Rogues (John Hughes, Paul Smith, Keith Smithson, and
Mike Lloyd) 123pts
2nd Brian’s Bandits (Brian Maddox, Owen Walkeley, Les Burns and Tom
Jones) 121pts
Long Drive: Paul Smith
Long Putt: Nick Caulfield
Near Pins: JJ Harney, Lee Butler, Laurence Harding and Paul
Smith.
Nearest the Tree (18th hole): Thomas Nyborg
Booby Prize: Scott Bruehart
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society, who now
play out of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire
station, and almost opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play three times per
week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out,
and a friendly but competitive golf competition why not come and join
us.
We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new
players are always welcome. Contact Buff on 086 046 5091 or 080 605 5663
for all enquiries. You can find all the news, schedules and results on

Gaussa & Flor get to grips with Pleasant Valley
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Derek Brook
Tuesday, Nov. 20, Pleasant Valley – Stableford
Well the high season is here and we now tend to play the
courses that look after us year round. So off we went to Pleasant
Valley. This course is just ‘up the road’ so to speak, next bridge
past Khao Kheow, turn right and it is on the left. Simple is it not?
The weather looked set to be fine, as the sky looked good. Now who
remembers so much rain in November? The course looked wet when we
arrived but we were allowed carts so it was time to find out if it
was in decent condition.

Tuesday’s winners with one of ‘Bert’s
finest’.
We were away on time, but as it turned out we were following a
5-ball, however they were playing at a fair pace so we weren’t held
up. We found the course was a bit soggy in places but all in all it
was not bad. As we went along the fairways were in good condition,
the rough was not too punishing and the greens, despite the odd
problem, were fast and tricky. All in all we had a fine and
enjoyable day out on the course.
Back at Bert’s we got into the results. In the A Flight, 0 to 19,
the winner was Mike Gaussa with 40 points ahead of Kevin Dunne with
39 points in second and Tony Scamber in third with 38. In the B
Flight the winner was Joel Flor with 42 points ahead of Keith
Phillips with 41 in second and Colin Faraday in third with 38
points.
Near Pins: Colin Faraday (2), Mick Coghlan, Mike Gaussa
Long Putts: Kevin Dunne, Henry Wong
Friday, Nov. 23, Plutaluang – Stableford
I had a choice here, go to a course I do not particularly
like, or stay in bed. Well stay in bed won, and I awaited the return
of our brave group who ventured down there to tell me I had made a
mistake. I waited in Bert’s with a cold beer, refreshed and relaxed
as they returned. The report is based on their comments.
I am told they played the North and West layout, now I much prefer
the other 18 holes, if I must play. This 18 holes usually grinds me
down and I feel it would be better returned to the wild. It is
infested with long leaf grass, however many players swear by this 18
and the N&W combination is used for regional qualifiers. Mind, I
felt much better in my decision.
I am told the weather was ‘rain squalls’, all day and the course was
wet with no roll. Also the rough was soggy and very hard to get out
of. Seemingly the greens were in good condition, except for being a
bit slow, and the rain and ground conditions made for a very long
round, well over 5 hours. How sad.
All in all not the most successful of days, however they say the
worst day on the golf course is better than the best day at work,
and being a ‘Goldie Oldie’ these days I can tell you a ‘ lie in’ is
better than struggling around a golf course you are not even keen
on. For once I was not argued with by a band of windblown and soggy
golfers.
So to the results and the winner with 34 points was Andre Van Dyk
ahead of Mike Gaussa with 32 points in second. We then had a count
back on 31 points that saw Henry O’Brien in third with Mike O’Brien
and Daryl Evans just losing out. Then it was hot tea for some while
I had a few cold un’s. T.T.F.N.
Near Pins: Mike Gaussa, Joel Flor, Kevin Dunne, Dick Warberg

Phil Groves is consistently good
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, Nov. 19, The Emerald - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Garry Barling (7) 36pts
2nd David Ross (9) 34pts
3rd Phil Groves (8) 33pts
4th Dick Heaney (16) 33pts
As the weather gets steadily better so do the winning scores although
Monday’s competition at the Emerald suffered near the end with the last two
groups getting caught in a huge thunderstorm which was accompanied with
great flashes of lightning, causing most of them to head immediately for the
safety of the clubhouse. It was unsurprising that all the top finishers were
in the earlier groups who had completed their rounds prior to the storm’s
onset.

Phil Groves.
Garry Barling, having left Wollongong in bright sunshine, was expecting to
play golf in similar conditions here but was fortunate to be in the one of
the early groups and so handed in a dry card that proved to be the winner by
two with a score of level handicap on both nines, although he did suffer
over the last three holes, dropping three to his handicap.
David Ross also fell away badly over the last three holes dropping four
shots and giving up a winning position as he also watched the weather
closing in on them all and had to settle for second spot.
Phil Groves just did enough in the early part of the back nine to win the
count back over Richard Heaney with a better 18 to 16 to claim third and
leave Dick in fourth.
There were no 2’ sin the second division but Garry Barling made it a double
celebration with the only one in the first division.
Before the presentations were made there were welcome backs for David Ross,
Paul Hartley, Daryl Burkett and Garry Barling.
Garry
Barling.
Wednesday, Nov. 21, Mountain Shadow - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Alwyne Burley (18) 37pts
2nd Benny Hansen (24) 35pts
3rd Phil Groves (8) 33pts
4th Frank Hughes (17) 32pts
5th Mike Hill (23) 31pts
A very unusual sign-up session at the Haven found the usually efficient Doc
somewhat befuddled as he struggled to recover from the previous night’s
celebration of Ole Stamnes’ and Roar Berger’s joint 75 Birthday party. The
wine had been flowing fairly freely and the Doc had imbibed of perhaps more
than his share and seemed to be still in the midst of the session going by
his handwriting on the sheet, which was legible only to him. As the bus left
he was seen heading back to rest.
With the numbers still well short of those normally expected at the start of
high season it was decided to take on the always difficult Mountain Shadow
in a singles competition from the blue tees and although it proved to be a
stern test of golf, the condition of the course, especially the greens, was
such that the majority of the field thoroughly enjoyed the experience even
if the scores were a little on the low side for a Stableford event.
Alwyne Burley just got the better of the course, going one under handicap to
just edge out Benny Hansen into second place by two after Benny had returned
his best score for three months.
Phil Groves, who is doing a splendid job in Trevor Schirmer’s absence
looking after the groups, still has enough concentration to be competitive
as his second third place on the trot showed when he slipped in two behind
Benny and one in front of Frank Hughes in fourth.
Mike Hill, having featured in most of the recent results, is going through a
bit of a slump at the moment but hung on in there to take fifth one back
from Frank.
Daryl Burkett slipped in the sole 2 in the first division pool while Benny
Hansen did the same in the second division.
Prior to the presentations, which the Doc was just about recovered
sufficiently enough to handle, there were welcomes for new members Franklin
van Diemt and Marcel Damad and also a welcome back for Bill Roycroft.
Alwyn
Burley.
Friday, Nov. 23, Khao Kheow B & C (Yellow tees) –
Stableford
CSS 72
1st Phil Groves (8) 39pts
2nd Paul Taylor (17) 36pts
3rd Jun Ishihara (11) 36pts
4th Daryl Burkett (14) 35pts
After playing at Khao Kheow recently when there were a few complaints about
the state of the course as it was undergoing a fair bit of renovation work,
with many areas both marked and unmarked as GUR, it was a pleasure to return
and find it back in shape with the greens especially flat and fast. The
players all gave it the “thumbs up” for the well worthwhile efforts of the
management.
It is pleasing to note that following many entreaties to the course
management they have addressed the situation of the island green eighth hole
on the B course, where it had previously been marked as a yellow staked
water hazard leaving the competitors no alternative to taking three from the
tee after a trip to the water. The hole has now been marked as a lateral
water hazard, staked red, allowing a drop on the island and speeding up play
without needing to take an illegal drop from the drop area, which did not
keep the hazard between the player and the flag.
Phil Groves added to his two previous podium finishes in the week with an
even better result as he took the top spot with a sparkling three under
handicap round that was too good by three for the chasing group.
Paul Taylor may well have thought that an even par round to handicap would
be the winning score as the scores normally over the B and C courses are not
so good, but he had to settle for second place after winning a count back
over Jun Ishihara, returning a better 19 to 16 after Jun had started the
front nine well but then dropped three shots to handicap on the first four
coming home.
Daryl Burkett had his best round of this trip but it only got him into
fourth place a shot further behind.
There were no 2’s in the second division but Garry Barling and Phil Groves
shared the first division pot.
Back at The Haven there were welcomes for new members Yoshihiro Gotanda and
Hirohiko Tatsumi and also a welcome back to Jun Ishihara.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact mobile
082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between Beach
Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do
not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.15 on
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days that you wish to play. A schedule
of courses to be played can be found on our web site at
www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Pattaya Sports Club Fishing Report
Dene Mundy
On my behalf, Jeff Doutch met Colin Cave, 6 anglers and accompanying
guests and escorted them to Sattahip on Saturday 15th November where they
were met by the captain and deck hand and assisted in getting their gear on
board for a special charter trip.
The boat departed around 07:30 in calm waters and light winds. I understand
from Colin all participants had a most enjoyable day. The captain estimated
the group caught approx. 50 kilos of the usual snapper, grouper, yellow tail
and pla dang. Two medium sized stingray were also caught but our larger
sweetlip cod were on holidays for the day.
I met the boat on return around 18:30 hours and confirmed all were happy
with the trip, several mentioning the captain and deck hand took good care
of them throughout the day.
On Saturday, 17th November, seven of us, including 2 newcomers Murray
Metcalf and companion, met at 07:00 at Sattahip and after much discussion
decided to cancel the trip due to increasing winds, bad weather forecasts
and knowledge of evacuation of drilling employees in southern waters
following heavy storm warnings.
December trips are scheduled for 1, 6, 15 and 20. The trips on the first and
fifteenth are fully booked but there are several vacancies on the 6th and
20th Dec.
Trips on 1st and 6th will run by Jeff Doutch 084 352 4664 and Peter Hyland
080 644 6006 during my absence in Australia.
Please contact them for bookings or other information.
Happy Fishing!

Hayes holds the aces at Pleasant Valley
PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside
Tuesday we made our regular visit to
Pleasant Valley, which continues to improve as a golf course generally as
they tweak a few holes. Martin Hayes (14), making a return to golf in
Thailand after working hard driving a London cab, showed a liking for the
improvements, shooting a creditable 41 points. This was more than enough to
relegate Jeff Wylie (6) to 2nd spot after he has signed for 37 hard fought
points after going the first 5 holes without a par. Near pins were shared
around between Jeff, Brian & Martin.

Martin Hayes.
With the high season upon us and in the search for some value for money, we
made a return to Plutaluang on Thursday; the East & South loop our allotted
combination on the day. Scores did not match Tuesday’s efforts, but it was
Jeff Wylie (6) leading the way with 33 points, edging Willem Lasonder (20)
in to 2nd after he recorded 32 points, which included 4 wipes. Near pins
were secured by Jeff & K.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on Tuesday & Thursday, with ML
hosting prompt presentations on both days. As a PSC affiliated venue we
welcome all golfers, including seniors who have opted for the “Silver” tee
option. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you
there, cheers & good golfing!

Patrick’s perfect play
Phoenix Members Golf Society

Tuesday’s winners pose with
the staff at The Relax Bar.
Mike Gerrard.
We will start with Tuesday 20th Nov. and as we arrived today we were
quite worried about the weather. It seems most folk are thinking the same at
present. The worst year for rain in this area we can remember.
With carts confined to paths only, we were more than pleased with the
condition of the course once we set off. As usual in these conditions we
applied the winter rule of ‘lift, clean and place’ on fairways, but it has
to be said the ball did not pick up too much mud or dirt all the way round.
We did have the threat of rain a couple of times, but Buddha must smile on
our group. Monday and Wednesday were wash outs, whilst Tuesday remained dry.
Our winner today was the little leprechaun Patrick Browne with a fine tally
of 38 points. In second place was Peter (Bomber) Harris with 34 points,
third was Adriano Reale with 33 and fourth was the other Italian, Sergio
Volpi, with 31 points. I think this was the first time Adriano managed to
finish on the podium. Well done!
Near pins were won by Dick, Eamon Murtagh (2), and Jim Neilson.
Our lucky draw winners (prizes donated by our hosts, The Relax Bar) were Ken
Collons, Mike Gerrard, Joris Goetschalkx and Hugh Byrne.
Onto Friday 23rd Nov. and today we welcomed a lovely group of 8, yes 8
Welshmen. Their leader, Salah, had called me from the UK (must not say
England. I’ll get beaten up with leeks) and requested that could they
possibly join our group. I was overwhelmed to think we had achieved
international recognition as a group.
What a great bunch of guys. Not only did they turn up early, they also
managed to find their way to The Relax Bar and enjoy a few bevies with us as
well. I have to say we drew the line when they suggested that they form a
male voice choir and sing for us. We decided that they would have enough
male ‘vice’ singing later in the evening.
With quite a lot of funds in the kitty today we went to five places for the
major prizes and our winner today, who, again took money off me in match
play, was Richard Baldwin who scored a superb 37 points (should have been
more). In second was Hugh Byrne with 34 points, third was Bill Hewitt with
33, fourth was one of our Welsh guests Brian Owen with 30 and fifth was his
compatriot, Cookie (Burns) with 28 points.
Near pins went to Hugh Byrne, Mike Gerrard & Brian Owen. Lucky draw prizes
were awarded to four other players who had not won anything. Sorry cannot
remember who, but they got them!
On Friday, 4th January 2013 we are hopefully planning to organise a New Year
Drive In (in conjunction with the PSC) with a local charity as the
beneficiary. We will be playing at Phoenix from approx 10.30 am and I have
provisionally reserved 15 tee times. Entrance fee for this tournament will
be 1.000 Baht to include prizes and a superb buffet at The Relax Bar,
leaving what is left over to donate to the charity. All green fees, caddy
fees and cart fees will be extra on the day.Anyone interested in
participating should contact me direct on 087 091 7565 or email
mikegerrard@cslox info.com.
As always, anyone who would like to sponsor anything will be welcomed with
open arms. There will be free playing (green fee and caddy fee) places for
any organisation who would like to sponsor from 5.000 Baht upwards.

Westwood hoping for repeat at 2012 Thailand Golf Championship
Defending champion Lee Westwood of England is hoping to
repeat his extraordinary start to last year’s Thailand Golf Championship
when he tees up at Amata Spring Country Club in Chonburi next week for the
2012 edition of the Asian Tour’s flagship event.
In 2011, Westwood went bogey-free over the first two days to equal the Asian
Tour’s 36-hole scoring record of 20-under par, giving him an unassailable
lead of 14 shots at the halfway mark. Westwood looked on course for a
magical 59 on day one but eventually signed for a career low 60 after 18
holes.
“Let’s put it this way – I’ll be more than happy if I can emulate my start
of last year,” said the current world number four when asked about his
chances next week. “In fact I probably played better the second round than I
did when scoring 60 in the first. I think I was something like 20 under par
for the first two rounds. As for a 59… you never know.”
However, Westwood will face stiff competition for the coveted Thailand Golf
Championship title from a host of top-class international golfers including
2011 Masters champion Charl Schwartzel, fellow South African Louis
Oosthuizen and this year’s US Masters winner Bubba Watson.
Tickets for spectators cost 300 baht for the first 2 days (Dec. 6-7), 400
baht on Saturday, Dec. 8, and 500 baht on Sunday, Dec. 9. A four day pass
costs 800 baht. Children under 16 and seniors over 60 can gain free
admission.
In addition the tournament will be shown Live on the Golf Channel and local
TV media outlets.

McArdle back on form
IPGC golf from The Links
Tuesday, Nov. 20, Bangpra – Stableford
For the second week running Sunday’s game at Green Valley was
washed out, so it was off to Bangpra on Tuesday. With a breakaway group
heading up to Laem Chabang, a smaller than normal field chose to tackle an
equally good and much more challenging golf course for 2,900 baht less.
The course has generally stood up well to the recent heavy rains, being a
little soft underfoot but perfectly playable, however the greens have lost
some of their usual bite, with the downhill putts merely scary rather than
terrifying.
Despite the slower than usual greens, the course provided the usual tough
challenge, with only one player, Garry Barling, shooting his handicap to
take first place with 36 points. The ever steady Marty Rock came second on
33 points, one ahead of Jon Batty.
The ‘2’s pot was taken by Jon Batty. There was some debate with playing
partner Jon Lay as to whether the birdie putt at the 17th was “2” or “3”,
but as Jon L is more familiar with “3” than Jon B, his judgment stands.
1st Garry Barling (7) 36pts
2nd Marty Rock (10) 33pts
3rd Jon Batty (9) 32pts
Thursday, Nov. 22, Phoenix – Stableford
We made the short trip to Phoenix on Thursday, to find the course
in excellent condition, apart from the lower end of the Mountain course
which was a bit soft underfoot, but despite a no carts on the fairways
ruling there was no need for preferred lies.
We were originally allocated Mountain and Lake, but a chaotic start ensued
as a number of earlier starters were playing Lake-Mountain, and were coming
round to the tee as we were due to tee off. Fortunately the Ocean 9 was
free, so we started there, a little later than scheduled, and followed on
with the Mountain.
Joe McArdle took the spoils with 37 points, ending a lean year in which he
has only shot par on a handful of occasions and has seen his handicap rise
from 11 to 14 since January. Hopefully this will start a turnaround in
fortunes for the ever popular Irishman. Jon Batty was again in the prizes,
his 33 points being good enough for second spot and one ahead of Peter
Skinner, who missed a tap in on the 18th but managed to beat Frank McGowan
16-11 on the last 9.
The ‘2’s were shared by Andy Galvin and Mike Korney, the latter of whom is
the first to admit he is more accustomed to four-putting than single
putting!
1st Joe McArdle (14) 37pts
2nd Jon Batty (9) 33pts
3rd Peter Skinner (10) 32pts
Note: The Links depart from the hotel on Soi Buakhao at 10.30am on
Tuesdays and Thursdays and 9.45am for Green Valley every Sunday. Sign up at
the hotel or contact Jon on 080 021 1034. A full schedule of courses can be
found on the IPGC website.

City hold out to share the spoils
Bangkok Casuals Football League
Paul Frain
Pattaya City FC played the league leading Titans at home last
weekend and City had the good news that their opponent’s top goal scoring
forward was not available at the start. The match was in doubt due to the
downpour just before the game but the referee decided that the pitch was
good enough to play on.
The Titans started with just ten players but they still took the game to
City whose keeper Yongul was soon called into action and made a good save
when the Titans broke through the City offside trap.
After fifteen minutes the Titans were brought up to full strength when one
of their players arrived late but now it was City’s turn to attack and the
Titans keeper had to bring off a smart save to stop Emery’s goal bound
curling shot from entering the net.
Chances were being created at both ends of the field; first Dipta wasted a
glorious opportunity to give Pattaya the lead but he somehow put his shot
high and wide with just the keeper to beat. At the other end, City’s keeper
was kept busy in the minutes leading up to half time and had to pull off
several fine saves to keep the game goalless at the break.
Yongul was back in the action as the second half got underway and his string
of brilliant saves kept Titans from taking the lead. Against the run of
play, Pattaya went up the other end of the pitch and made the breakthrough
in the 64th minute when a mistake by the Titans’ keeper allowed Jansen to
slot the ball home.
The Titians put more pressure on the City goal and won a succession of
corners, the last of which finally saw the City keeper beaten as Titan
forward Hopkins headed home from close range to make it 1-1. Yongul was kept
busy till the end of the game and had to produce more flying saves, but City
held out for a well deserved and hard fought point.
The officials for this match were excellent and used their common sense in
testing conditions for the players. Pattaya City have no game this coming
weekend and will be at home next week in the Cup.

Fish hunters test their skills in Jomtien
Vittaya Yoondorn
Over 200 anglers boarded 60 boats on November 5 to sail off into
deep water and take part in the 8th annual Jomtien Fishing Games.

Sarawut Bunma from Pattaya
Zeus team shows off the team’s prize catch.
Under the
starting gun of Pattaya deputy mayor Ronakit Ekasingh, the assorted armada
of craft set out at 5 p.m. with 19 hours of fierce fishing competition ahead
of them. The boats had to return to the starting point by midday on the
following day in order to avoid being eliminated.
The contest was divided into 5 categories with the awards being decided on
total weight of catch and best samples of the different types of fish
landed.
The Pattaya Zeus team led by Sarawut Bunma was one of the first to reach the
shore and displayed an 18.9kg common snakehead plus other large fish that
created quite a buzz amongst the wide-eyed spectators.
Later that evening a party was held to present awards to the winners.
Praphan Chaikaew won the scale fish category with a grouper weighing 5kg;
Chatree Siewhong was awarded first place in the catfish class with a fish
weighing 17.9kg; the total fish weight category winner was Amnaj Chimmanee
with a catch of 268 fish; and two special prizes for rare fish went to Khwan
Jomtien for a walking catfish and Morakot Sihoya who landed a yellow-pink
conger.
Chonburi MP Porames Ngampichet was on hand to present prizes to the winners
and congratulated all who took part before officially closing out the
Fishing Games for this year.

Foreign tourists marvel at the
assortment of different fish on display.
