BANGKOK, 13 November 2012 – Safety measures, which include pier renovation projects and anti-drinking campaigns, have been planned ahead of this year’s Loy Kratong Festival.

Deputy Permanent Secretary Sanya Sheenimit of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) said City Hall has held talks on safety and health provisions during the festive season with Metropolitan Police, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, and other related agencies.

The BMA plans to inspect over 100 piers along canals and the Chaopraya River while carrying out repairs on damaged structures. Other agencies will closely monitor the sale of fireworks and the preparation of materials for use on kratongs. This year, the BMA will stage a Loy Kratong Festival at a public park near Rama Eight Bridge.

The BMA has also launched an anti-alcohol campaign ahead of the holiday season in collaboration with the Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control. The project will clamp down on alcohol consumption in schools and university campuses in order to ensure that alcoholic drinks are not sold to underage students and are only sold within allotted times.
