BANGKOK, Thailand – Walailak University (WU) has received international recognition for its commitment to sustainability. The university earned two Global Good Governance (3G) Awards 2025: the 3G Excellence Award for Green Campus and the 3G Championship Award for Sustainable Development.

Presented by Cambridge IFA, the awards honor institutions aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The 3G Summit and Awards 2025 was held on May 13 in Brunei Darussalam, with participation from over 15 countries. WU was represented by Associate Professor Dr. Warit Jawjit and Assistant Professor Dr. Amonsak Sawusdee.

WU was invited to speak at the summit, sharing its strategies and achievements in sustainability and good governance. The university’s leadership under President Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong has been credited for its progress in these areas.

The Green Campus Award acknowledges WU’s environmental efforts, including solar power usage, electric transport, and waste reduction. Its 3,793-acre campus features expansive green areas and a 534-acre botanical park that serves educational and ecological functions.

The Sustainable Development Award reflects the university’s impact beyond its campus. Community initiatives include marine life conservation, coral reef restoration, and the construction of a large water reservoir. WU also runs outreach programs to improve public health and support marginalized groups.

In global rankings, WU was placed in the 101–200 band in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2024. It ranked 3rd worldwide in Stewardship and 4th in Outreach. Additionally, it is recognized as the top green university in Southern Thailand and 6th nationwide in the UI GreenMetric Rankings. (NNT)
