US worries about Thai political turmoil

BANGKOK, 7 December 2013  – The US Pacific Commander and the US ambassador have met with Thai Premier Yingluck Shinawatra, expressing concerns over the current political turmoil in Thailand. 

US Pacific Commander Admiral Samuel J. Locklear and US ambassador to Thailand Kristie Kennie yesterday paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister and Defense Minister Yingluck Shinawatra at the Government House, during which they expressed concerns over the ongoing anti-government demonstration, and said they hoped there would soon be a peaceful solution to the conflict.

The US commander also commented Miss Yingluck for applying non-violence measures against the demonstrators, while voicing his support for the government in seeking solution in a democratic way.

Meanwhile, the Thai Premier assured the US of the government’s peaceful approaches and willingness to resolve the situation through talks with all parties involved, while brushing aside that the government would impose the Emergency Decree on the rally goers.

Apart from his meeting with Miss Yingluck, Admiral Locklear also had a chance to attend the celebration of His Majesty the King’s 86th birthday celebration on December 5th, 2013. The commander said he was honored to have taken part in the great event.

This year also marks the180th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and the US.
