Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and British Ambassador Mark Gooding joined officials and football figures at a special match marking 170 years of UK–Thailand relations, blending sport, charity, and diplomacy in a celebration of enduring friendship.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The British Embassy in Bangkok hosted a friendly football tournament on October 19 to celebrate the 170th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and the United Kingdom. The event was attended by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, former Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, Football Association of Thailand President Nualphan Lamsam, and scores of officials from both governments.

British Ambassador Mark Gooding presided over the opening ceremony and presented an honorary award to Nualphan for her contributions to Thai football. Twelve teams competed in the tournament, with matches officiated by certified referees from the Football Association of Thailand. The Department of Corrections team won the “170th Anniversary Trophy” after a close penalty shootout.

The event also featured a football skills challenge organized by the Liverpool FC Academy and a charity raffle in partnership with the Thai Red Cross Society. Proceeds will support the development of the Integrated Cancer Treatment Center at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, combining sportsmanship with community service and goodwill.

Football has long been a bridge between the two nations, with several English clubs owned or managed by Thai investors and the Premier League maintaining a strong fan base in Thailand. British clubs have also launched academies and youth programs across the country, supporting grassroots football development and expanding cultural exchange through sport.

The British Embassy said it will continue hosting activities throughout 2025 that promote collaboration in trade, education, innovation, and cultural exchange, further strengthening the enduring ties between the two countries. (NNT)
