VIENTIANE – Tropical Storm Wipha weakened into a tropical depression early Wednesday morning before moving into the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Laos), bringing heavy rainfall and strong winds to several northern provinces, including the capital Vientiane and Luang Prabang.

According to regional weather authorities, Wipha weakened at around 1:00 a.m. local time, with maximum sustained winds near the center measured at 55 kilometers per hour. By 4:00 a.m., the storm had crossed into northern Laos after making landfall in northern Vietnam the previous day.

The depression is continuing to move northwest at a speed of 25 kilometers per hour and is expected to gradually dissipate into a low-pressure cell. Nonetheless, meteorologists are warning of continued heavy rain and gusty winds throughout the day, particularly in northern Laos, where localized flooding and disruptions may occur.

In Vietnam, Wipha made landfall on Tuesday morning in the northern provinces, bringing intense rainfall and strong winds. No casualties were reported. However, local media noted that a fishing boat capsized off the coast of Quang Ninh province. All nine crew members were rescued safely.

Airports and seaports in Quang Ninh and Hai Phong, which were temporarily closed due to the storm, have now resumed normal operations.

Authorities in Laos and surrounding regions remain on alert as the remnants of Wipha continue to affect weather patterns. Local emergency teams have been advised to monitor river levels and potential landslide-prone areas while the storm system passes. (TNA)
