Thais of Chinese descent celebrate Festival of Ancestors

BANGKOK, 11 August 2014 — Chinese descendants in Thailand on Sunday celebrated the Chinese festival of the Ancestors.

In Yala, shoppers flocked at local fresh markets to buy food and products necessary for their ritual to pay respect to ancestors in traditional Chinese beliefs.

In Chonburi, although many items were more expensive this year, those of Chinese descent said it was necessary to buy all of things to be used as offerings to pay respect to their ancestors and then celebrate with family members.

Meanwhile, vendors at Hauy Kwang fresh market. in the heart of Bangkok, said buyers were reluctant in spending. They just bought only necessary items needed for the ritual, quite different from situation in years before.
