BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand has earned international recognition for sustainable tourism after a conservation project in Krabi province won the Nature & Scenery category at the Green Destinations Story Awards 2026, presented during the ITB Berlin tourism trade fair in Germany. The award was granted for the project “Returning Homes to the Hermit Crabs” at Mu Ko Lanta National Park, developed and promoted by the Tourism Authority of Thailand to protect coastal ecosystems and encourage responsible tourism.
The award was accepted by Natreeya Taweewong, permanent secretary for Tourism and Sports and chairperson of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, together with Thapanee Kiatphaibool, governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand. The recognition placed Thailand among destinations receiving international attention for environmental conservation and sustainable tourism management.
Thailand also received additional recognition at the event. The Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration received first place for Chiang Khan and second place for Uthai Thani in the Environment & Climate category. The Department of Tourism received a Bronze Award on behalf of Doi Phu Kha National Park in Nan province and Takua Pa Old Town in Phang Nga, both recognized for tourism management aligned with international sustainability standards.
The hermit crab conservation project addresses the shortage of natural seashells used by hermit crabs as shelters while encouraging visitors to help protect coastal ecosystems. The program was carried out through cooperation among tourism authorities, Mu Ko Lanta National Park, private operators, and local communities, demonstrating Thailand’s progress in developing tourism destinations that protect natural resources while supporting local communities.
