BANGKOK, Thailand – At the 47th World Heritage Committee session in France, Cambodia claimed that Wat Phumanfa in Thailand’s Buriram province is an imitation of Angkor Wat, and therefore is affecting the World Heritage site’s universal value. The Cambodian representative then requested UNESCO to investigate.
The Head of the Thai Delegation, Sihasak Phuangketkeow, responded by clarifying Thailand’s position. He explained that Wat Phumanfa is a Buddhist temple. Its design was inspired by ancient art and architecture found within Thailand and is therefore not a copy of Angkor Wat. He also stated that cultural heritage should foster relationships, not create division.
Nonetheless, Sihasak affirmed that Thailand is ready to discuss the issue directly with Cambodia based on the principle of good neighborly relations. It was agreed at the meeting that the matter is a topic for bilateral discussions rather than for the World Heritage Committee forum. (NNT)
