Thailand honors inauguration of Pope Leo XIV, strengthening ties with the Vatican

VATICAN – Deputy Minister of Interior Teerarat Samrejvanich represented the Thai government at the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV on May 18 at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. Assigned by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, her participation represented Thailand’s formal recognition of the new Pope and the long-standing ties between Thailand and the Vatican.

The ceremony, attended by religious leaders and dignitaries from around the world, officially welcomed Pope Leo XIV as the 267th leader of the Roman Catholic Church. He is the first American-born Pontiff. The event featured traditional rites, including the presentation of the Papal Pallium and Fisherman’s Ring, followed by pledges of loyalty from representatives of the Catholic laity.



After the Mass, Pope Leo XIV met with international delegations, including Thailand’s representative. Teerarat conveyed the government’s congratulations and reaffirmed Thailand’s adherence to supporting global efforts on peace and cultural cooperation.

Teerarat also met with Cardinal Francis Xavier Kriengsak Kovitvanit, Archbishop Emeritus of Bangkok, who had traveled to the Vatican for the event. Their meeting highlighted Thailand’s continued engagement with the Catholic community.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn also delivered an official message to Pope Leo XIV, extending Thailand’s best wishes and acknowledging the Vatican’s role in promoting peace, compassion, and understanding around the world. (NNT)
