BANGKOK, Thailand – Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has announced that Thailand is exploring the possibility of hosting a Formula 1 Grand Prix, following talks with executives from the Formula One Group. The announcement came during her visit to the Monaco Grand Prix, where she met with F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali to discuss potential collaboration on venue options, licensing, marketing, and logistics.
The government views the event as part of its ambitious campaign to expand tourism by attracting global entertainment and sports events. With Formula 1 drawing over 600 million viewers per season, Thai agencies are now assessing the technical, legal, and logistical requirements for hosting a race.
Bringing F1 to Thailand would involve large-scale investment and infrastructure upgrades, including road improvements, the construction of race facilities, and the installation of digital systems. It is also expected to generate employment across various sectors, from logistics and operations to event management and technical support.
Officials see the project as an opportunity to build skills among Thai workers, while also increasing interest in motorsports and inspiring a new generation of drivers.
During the visit, the Prime Minister met Thai-British F1 driver Alex Albon and another Thai racer, Tasanapol Inthraphuvasak, both of whom expressed support for promoting the sport in Thailand. Government discussions with F1 are ongoing, with further updates expected as feasibility studies continue. (NNT)
