BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand and New Zealand are expanding cooperation on carbon market development and greenhouse gas emissions reductions across the Asia-Pacific region. The two countries co-hosted the 16th Asia Pacific Carbon Markets Roundtable in Bangkok on October 19-20, providing a platform for regional discussions on carbon trading systems, climate policies, and the transition to low-carbon economies.

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchart Chomklin assigned the Department of Climate Change and Environment and the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization to organize the meeting with New Zealand’s Ministry for the Environment. The event featured welcoming remarks from New Zealand Ambassador to ASEAN Joanna Anderson and a keynote address by Dr. Phirun Saiyasitpanich, director-general of the Department of Climate Change and Environment.

Discussions covered carbon markets, emissions trading systems, and ways to improve compatibility between carbon credit mechanisms operating in different countries. Participants explored opportunities for closer regional coordination, knowledge sharing, and more effective use of market-based approaches to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

A technical training session on October 21 covered the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), with participation from government agencies, project developers, airlines, and other stakeholders. The training involved the practical application of aviation-related carbon offset mechanisms, while broader discussions aimed to strengthen regional cooperation and support long-term net-zero emissions goals.
