Foreign Minister Maris confirms regional cooperation as Thai experts prepare for technical talks in Naypyidaw to address upstream contamination.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa has confirmed that Thailand and Myanmar are working together to address water quality concerns in the Kok River, which flows across their shared border into northern Thailand. The issue was raised during Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra’s recent visit to Chiang Rai province, where she spoke with residents affected by recent flooding and environmental conditions.

Preliminary assessments suggest that the contamination may be linked to upstream activities in Myanmar. In response, the Thai government has requested that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs strengthen cooperation with neighboring countries to find practical and lasting solutions. Minister Maris noted that both Myanmar and China have responded positively, expressing readiness to collaborate with Thailand in protecting shared natural resources.

As part of these efforts, the Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs will lead a team of Thai experts to Naypyidaw next week for technical discussions with Myanmar officials. The visit will focus on identifying the causes of pollution, exchanging knowledge, and developing safeguards to prevent further contamination. The Thai side will also explore opportunities for international cooperation to support sustainable water management.

Thailand views this as an opportunity to strengthen its environmental partnerships with its neighbors. Ongoing dialogue is expected to benefit communities on both sides of the border by improving the health of the river system, which serves as an important resource for agriculture, daily use, and local ecosystems.

Officials from both countries have reaffirmed their intention to collaborate on the issue, combining national efforts and international expertise to protect the Kok River and support affected communities. (NNT)
