Gen. Sawat, chairman of the Thai Senate’s military and security committee, urges careful verification of Cambodia’s reported withdrawal of heavy weapons, emphasizing that Thai authorities must ensure agreements are fully honored before releasing 18 prisoners of war.

BANGKOK, ThailandGen. Sawat Tasana, a member of the Thai Senate and chairman of the Senate’s Military and Security Committee, has urged caution regarding recent reports from Cambodia about the withdrawal of heavy weapons.

The warning comes after Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen livestreamed the movement of military equipment and some heavy weapons, claiming a partial withdrawal along the border. Gen. Sawat acknowledged that if the withdrawal is genuine, it could contribute to stability along the border. However, he stressed that Thailand should not place full trust in Cambodia and must verify the actions independently. “We need to check with officials to confirm the news — whether the withdrawal is real or just for show,” he said.

Regarding the possible release of 18 prisoners of war, Gen. Sawat said that Cambodia must fully comply with all agreed-upon conditions before Thailand considers any release. “If the process follows the agreements and rules, there is no problem. The key is that it must be done sincerely and genuinely,” he added.

He emphasized that the verification process is essential to ensure that Thailand does not lose its position or advantage. “The point at which we can judge whether Cambodia is honoring the agreement is by closely monitoring and confirming the reports. I am confident that the troops stationed in the area can manage the situation effectively,” Gen. Sawat concluded. (TNA)
