Thai authorities investigate foreign “nominees” holding land and running unauthorized businesses in Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, ensuring legal compliance and transparency.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Royal Thai Police have launched a thorough investigation into foreign “nominees” holding land on Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, amid concerns over possible illegal financial and business activities. Some foreigners are suspected of using Thai nationals to hold property on their behalf, a practice that could threaten economic security, particularly in key tourist areas.

Police are working closely with the Surat Thani Provincial Governor, the Land Department, the Department of Business Development, and security agencies to examine the situation. Preliminary findings focus on Israeli nationals allegedly operating rental car businesses, unlicensed tours, and other unauthorized commercial ventures.

The National Police Office (NPO) is taking action in four main areas:

  1. Setting up a special task force to monitor land holdings by foreign entities and businesses potentially avoiding the law.

  1. Investigating financial records and corporate documents to determine actual foreign ownership.

  1. Tightening work permit regulations for foreigners in coordination with Immigration and the Ministry of Labor.

  1. Pursuing legal action against violators, accomplices, and any government officials involved.

Authorities assure the public that all measures will be conducted fairly, transparently, and equally, protecting the nation’s interests.
