Phumtham condemns Cambodian misinformation, confirms Thai sovereignty success, and urges cautious return of evacuees pending security review.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Phumtham Wechayachai expressed condolences over the tragic deaths of evacuees who, overwhelmed by stress and a desire to return home, took their own lives. He emphasized that while the government shares the concern and desire for residents to return safely, the situation remains uncertain, and a thorough security assessment is needed before allowing their return.

Regarding the border situation, Phumtham highlighted Thailand’s success in reclaiming and holding surrounding areas despite recent clashes. He refrained from detailing the status of the Prasat Ta Kwai temple itself to avoid compromising ongoing negotiations but affirmed satisfaction with the defense of Thai sovereignty.

Addressing Cambodian claims, he dismissed statements from Cambodian leaders Hun Sen and Hun Manet as untrustworthy, accusing Cambodia of distorting facts and violating the ceasefire by sending 18 soldiers across the border after the ceasefire announcement. Thailand currently holds these soldiers and is conducting investigations before deciding on their repatriation.

On diplomacy, Phumtham confirmed ongoing communication with international powers, including China, ASEAN, Indonesia, and the United States, all urging peace and neutrality. He stressed that Thailand relies on verified evidence rather than unsubstantiated claims often circulated by Cambodia.

Responding to reports that some hospitals have stopped accepting Cambodian patients, he acknowledged the challenge of misinformation spreading alongside true reports and the need for careful verification. He also noted that Thailand’s slower communication is due to its commitment to accurate, evidence-based information, unlike Cambodia’s rapid but often misleading public statements. (TNA)
