Thailand’s NHRC denounces strikes on a hospital and civilian areas near the border, urges respect for international law and protection for both Thai citizens and Cambodian residents in Thailand.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand’s National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has condemned Cambodian military attacks on civilians and a hospital near the border, labeling the actions as unacceptable war crimes.

The statement follows clashes that began between Thai and Cambodian soldiers on the morning of July 24th, near Prasat Ta Muen Thom and later spread. The commission expressed condolences to the families of the many Thai civilians killed and injured, stating that targeting civilians and medical facilities is a violation of international humanitarian law, including the Geneva Conventions and the Rome Statute.

The NHRC urged Cambodian forces to respect human dignity and immediately cease violence against civilians and vulnerable groups in the conflict zone. The commission also conveyed its support for Thai soldiers and personnel at the front, calling on all agencies to ensure the full protection of civilians in high-risk areas. It also appealed for an end to the incitement of racial hatred against Cambodians living in Thailand, who are unconnected to the border conflict.

The NHRC expressed hope for a swift and peaceful resolution to the conflict, which severely impacts the rights and well-being of civilians in both nations. (NNT)
