Gen Natthaphon confirms improved Thai-Cambodian border situation but warns operational details remain sensitive. Plans to cut utilities along the border are being evaluated amid concerns over criminal activity.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Thai government has provided an update on the situation along the Thai–Cambodian border, with Deputy Minister of Defense Gen Natthaphon Nakpanich describing an improvement since the previous weekend. Border checkpoint operating hours remain restricted as the situation is still considered delicate. Both Thai and Cambodian troops have repositioned without direct confrontation, with each side maintaining its presence under current border control measures. The National Security Council will reassess conditions as developments unfold.

Gen Natthaphon also addressed discussions surrounding a proposal to cut water and electricity supplies along the border. He said such action is under review and could apply either to border defense measures or as a response to criminal networks linked to call center scams operating in the area. Any decision will depend on further assessment and will be determined by the National Security Council.

Responding to recent public comments from military analysts, Gen Natthaphon expressed concern that speculation might inadvertently reveal operational intentions. He acknowledged the need for transparency in an era shaped by rapid information exchange but stressed the importance of discretion in sensitive matters related to security. He added that in regions under his command, communication is kept to a minimum to preserve tactical flexibility while still respecting the public’s right to information.

The Deputy Minister of Defense reiterated that the government is actively addressing the issue, although certain matters cannot be disclosed in real time due to their potential impact on ongoing negotiations with Cambodia. He said decisions are made with care to avoid escalating tensions or undermining diplomatic channels.

Regarding the upcoming June 14 meeting of the Joint Commission on Demarcation for Land Boundary, Gen Natthaphon declined to comment on whether Cambodia will raise the question of disputed areas at the International Court of Justice. He stated that such matters fall under the responsibility of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while national security remains his primary area of responsibility. (NNT)
