Officials promote traditional dress and local celebrations for Songkran at Thailand Cultural Centre, encouraging families to honor customs while reducing travel amid rising fuel costs.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Ministry of Culture is encouraging the public to celebrate Songkran in traditional Thai attire and attend events close to home to help reduce travel costs as oil prices rise. Culture Minister Sabeeda Thaised shared the message during a recent ceremony at the Thailand Cultural Centre.

On April 2, the Department of Cultural Promotion held a traditional water-pouring ceremony to pay respects to national artists, cultural experts, and individuals recognized for their contributions to Thai culture. The event also demonstrated the Thai New Year custom of seeking blessings from elders, a long-standing practice linked to family gatherings and merit-making in hometown communities.

This year’s Songkran celebrations are taking place in Bangkok and 18 provinces under the theme “My Songkran, Thai Colors, Happiness Worldwide.” Locations include Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Chonburi, Samut Prakan, and Nakhon Si Thammarat, as well as other tourism provinces such as Phuket, Chiang Rai, and Kanchanaburi. In Bangkok, activities are scheduled at Wat Suthat Thepwararam and across 50 temples in 50 districts.

The Ministry of Culture is also encouraging the public to wear traditional Thai clothing, including royal-style attire and regional textiles, during the festival. Officials said participating in local events or celebrating at home with family can help sustain cultural traditions while easing travel expenses. (NNT)
