BANGKOK, Thailand – Lieutenant General Boonsin Padklang, Commander of Thailand’s 2nd Army Region, has brushed aside concerns over Cambodia’s intention to take a border dispute to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), reaffirming that the Thai military stands firm in defending national sovereignty based on the official 1:50,000-scale map used by the Kingdom of Thailand.
The dispute centers around the area near the Chong Bok border crossing—also known as the Emerald Triangle—including the Ta Muen Thom, Ta Muen Tot, and Ta Kwai temples. Cambodia has indicated plans to take the case to the ICJ, claiming ownership of the area.
Lt. Gen. Boonsin stated on June 2 that the matter poses no issue for the Thai military, which is operating strictly within its mandate.
“We perform our duty based on Thailand’s 1:50,000-scale map. The other procedures pursued by Cambodia are for their government to handle in the international arena,” he told reporters.
“As far as the 2nd Army Region is concerned, Ta Muen Thom and the other two temples are within Thai territory.”
The general’s comments came in response to recent remarks from Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen, who warned that unresolved border disputes could lead to tensions similar to those in Gaza if not addressed through international legal channels.
Despite these developments, the Thai military has reiterated its focus on protecting national sovereignty and maintaining peace along the border.
