BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand’s military is responding with concern and urgency after Cambodian forces were observed positioning troops and aiming artillery toward Thai territory in several key areas near the border.
On June 14, Army spokesperson Maj. Gen. Winthai Suvaree confirmed that Cambodia has deployed military forces at multiple locations, with some artillery weapons capable of striking within Thai sovereign land. The most concerning deployments were reported near the disputed zones of Don Tuan Temple and Sattasom, close to Ban Phumsarol in Sao Thong Chai Subdistrict, Kantharalak District, Sisaket Province.
“This is considered a serious national security threat,” said Maj. Gen. Winthai. “The Thai Army is urgently adjusting troop deployment to ensure an appropriate and balanced response to the evolving situation.”
The move follows heightened tensions over long-standing border disputes between Thailand and Cambodia. The area has seen previous flare-ups, particularly near historic temples claimed by both sides.
While Thai authorities have not escalated the situation further, the army’s repositioning of forces signals readiness should the need arise. Officials continue to monitor developments closely to maintain stability and prevent potential conflict in the region.
