BANGKOK, Thailand – The Royal Thai Army has rejected claims by the Cambodian Ministry of National Defense that Thai troops opened fire on Cambodian civilians near the border, describing the allegations as misleading and politically motivated. The dispute surfaced after Cambodia accused Thailand of attacking Prai Chan Village on November 12, injuring five people, and violating the bilateral ceasefire agreement.
Major General Winthai Suvaree, Spokesperson for the Royal Thai Army, said the incident took place on the Thai side of the border near Ban Nong Ya Kaeo in Sa Kaeo’s Khok Sung district. He stated that Cambodian soldiers were the first to fire into Thai territory, forcing Thai troops to respond in accordance with established rules of engagement and only to the extent necessary to protect their positions and personnel.
The Thai Army said its return fire was limited and carefully directed at the source of the attack, ensuring no civilian harm or damage to non-combat areas. The Spokesperson added that the defensive action ceased immediately upon the end of gunfire from the Cambodian side.
Thai authorities reaffirmed their adherence to peace and stability along the border, stating that they will continue to act with restraint while defending national sovereignty. The Thai Army urged Cambodia to halt the spread of false information and to address any border issues through diplomatic channels. (NNT)
