BANGKOK, Thailand – Deputy Prime Minister and Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai has raised doubts about the People’s Party’s reported support for Bhumjaithai Party leader Anutin Charnvirakul to serve as interim prime minister, reminding the public of Bhumjaithai’s history of opposing constitutional amendments.
Speaking to reporters, Phumtham responded to speculation that the People’s Party and Bhumjaithai may form an alliance to install Anutin as a temporary leader, stating that the matter is not about “countering the move” but rather a legitimate decision by the opposition.
However, he cautioned: “The question is, is the People’s Party really confident about working with Bhumjaithai to amend the constitution? Let’s not forget — when Pheu Thai proposed constitutional changes, Bhumjaithai walked out of Parliament entirely. They’ve consistently resisted amendment efforts.”
Phumtham urged the People’s Party to reconsider whether their trust is well placed. “To say that Bhumjaithai can deliver constitutional reform in six months — are they really confident? Because it’s Bhumjaithai who have blocked reforms time and time again,” he said.
The remarks come amid rising political maneuvering as different factions jostle for control in the wake of recent leadership uncertainty. (TNA)
