KHAO YAI, Thailand — Park rangers at Khao Yai National Park are in pursuit of a man who dangerously approached a wild elephant with a knife in hand, ignoring repeated warnings from officials and tourists. The incident occurred at around 3:00 PM on April 29 in the Thung Kwang area while the elephant was feeding at a natural salt lick.
According to Mr. Chaiya Huayhongthong, the park chief, the man — identified as a 30-year-old army corporal with a history of psychiatric treatment — rode a motorcycle into the area and walked directly toward the elephant. Fortunately, the animal did not react aggressively.
After the confrontation, the man fled the scene on his motorcycle, which is now believed to be hidden in the forest. Rangers have since sealed off the area and are working to locate and detain the suspect for treatment, prioritizing public and wildlife safety.
Department of National Parks Director-General Attapol Charoenchansa has instructed all personnel to act with utmost caution. The park also reminded visitors to strictly follow safety rules, especially maintaining a minimum distance of 30 meters from wild elephants to avoid stress and danger. (TNA)
