BANGKOK, Thailand – The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) is set to launch a pilot feeder service using newly refurbished KIHA 40 and KIHA 48 diesel railcars. The service will operate between Don Mueang and Ayutthaya starting April 20, 2026, aiming to reduce travel expenses for citizens amid rising fuel costs.

This initiative provides a vital link between Bangkok and Ayutthaya, connecting passengers to the SRT Red Line commuter rail and Don Mueang International Airport. The trial period is scheduled for six months, running from April 20 to October 31, 2026.

Anan Phonimdang, Deputy Governor and Acting Governor of the SRT, stated that the project aligns with the national policy to enhance public transport connectivity. The KIHA 40 and KIHA 48 railcars were donated by the East Japan Railway Company (JR East). Currently, six units have been fully refurbished with updated engines, electrical systems, air conditioning, and passenger amenities, including vacuum toilets and luggage spaces.

The feeder service will operate six round-trips daily, from Monday to Friday. The route includes nine stops: Don Mueang, Rangsit, Chiang Rak, Thammasat University, Chiang Rak Noi, Khlong Phutsa, Bang Pa-in, Ban Pho, and Ayutthaya. This route is expected to serve over 1,000 passengers daily, including regular commuters, students from Thammasat University Rangsit Campus, and tourists.

The Acting Governor added that utilizing these railcars reflects the SRT’s commitment to improving service quality while encouraging a shift from private vehicles to rail transport. This shift is intended to alleviate traffic congestion and promote sustainable domestic travel. Following the six-month trial, the SRT will evaluate performance and passenger feedback to further develop long-term rail network strategies.

Tickets are available at all participating stations. For further information, the public may contact the SRT Customer Service Center at 1690 or visit the “SRT PR Team” Facebook page. (NNT)
