Songkhla welcomes 21-nation diplomatic delegation to Sadao customs checkpoint

On September 30, diplomats from Europe and Asia visited Thailand’s Sadao checkpoint, a key trade and tourism gateway with Malaysia. The visit highlighted ongoing infrastructure upgrades, cross-border connectivity, and Songkhla’s ambition to become a hub for medical and wellness tourism.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Songkhla province welcomed a delegation of diplomats from 21 countries for a visit to the Sadao customs checkpoint, a key economic and tourism gateway in southern Thailand. The visit took place on September 30 and included representatives from European and Asian countries along with foreign media.

The group toured the land border checkpoint in Sadao district, which plays a vital role in trade and investment between Thailand and Malaysia. Currently, construction is underway on the second Sadao customs checkpoint to support cross-border travel, international transport, and tourism. Additionally, a road connecting Thailand and Malaysia is being built, with completion expected by November.

Sadao customs checkpoint is one of Thailand’s major land border crossings and a critical hub for trade with Malaysia, significantly contributing to southern economic development. In fiscal year 2025, the checkpoint handled total trade worth 430.4 billion baht, with imports valued at 201.6 billion baht and exports at 228.8 billion baht. From October 2023 to August 2024, over 5.4 million travelers passed through the checkpoint.


Alongside the visit, Songkhla’s business sector hosted the “Songkhla Business Night” event to welcome the diplomats. The event provided an opportunity for diplomats to engage with local businesses and featured a video presentation on Songkhla’s medical and wellness capabilities, highlighting the province’s ambition to become an international hub for health tourism.
