BANGKOK – Thai people have started shopping for floral print shirts and traditional attire made of Thai fabrics in preparation for the Songkran Festival, lending to a boost in the economy.

Many retail shops within the municipal area of Yala province are displaying colorful Songkran shirts with a myriad of floral patterns for customers to browse through. A number of people, both children and adults, are coming out to find their favorite shirts to wear during the upcoming Songkran festivities.

The owner of a store on Ruam Mit Road in Yala said all the Songkran clothes at the store were ordered from Bangkok in the middle of March at 100-200 pieces per lot. Adult shirts are selling for 200-250 baht each, while those for kids are selling for 120-140 baht. According to the owner, the prices are the same as last year.

In Uthai Thani, more customers are opting to rent traditional Thai outfits, instead of buying them, due to the much lower cost. Traditional attire has been gaining in popularity in the province, just as in other parts of the country, following the organization of the Love and Warmth at Winter’s End Festival and the debut of the hit TV soap opera “Buppesannivas”.

A rental shop in Nong Khayang district of Uthai Thani reported that traditional Thai clothing is currently in high demand, especially items influenced by the fashion of the King Narai era.

servations have been placed with the shop all the way to the end of this month. Prices range from 250-300 baht.
